>> announcer: good morning bay area. good morning, thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. here's meteorologist lisa argen, tracking live doppler 7. >> good morning to you, chris. we have patchy fog and temperatures are kind of all over the place this morning as we look at live doppler 7 right now. you'll notice that the east bay and the south bay have fog in the warmer numbers. south bay, 62. 61 in gill ray. low to mid-50s in the north bay. we'll look for a fire weather watch to increase throughout the evening and overnight hours as dry conditions will result with breezy winds. maybe we'll get set later on today. but as for right now, we're looking at temperatures in the

50s and 60s throughout the next several hours. by noontime with a lot of sunshine we'll be in the 70s. mid-80s inland, 60s at the coast. fire danger increases. i'll have your accuweather seven-day forecast coming up. >> lisa, thank you. hurricane maria pummeled puerto rico a week and a half ago. but this morning much of the island is still without power. residents don't have water. and there is an urgent need for medical supplies. people here in the bay area are mobilizing to help. abc 7 news reporter lonni rivera has the story. >> i wish they were good. i'm hoping if they see this, i love them. >> reporter: irma is worried sick about her family in puerto rico. this text from tuesday is the last time she's heard from them saying they were okay. >> mommy, i love you. i'm doing everything that i can to provide help for my family. >> reporter: she thought the best way to use her time was to raise money. so she and her tech colleagues

>> hurricane maria killed at least 16 people in puerto rico and the death toll is expected to rise. president trump says help is on the way. >> i know it's been devastating. i know your police force and everything else has been absolutely hurt. but we're sending people to help and it's getting better on a daily basis. >> the president will survey the island's damage on tuesday. this morning, he cited government officials in puerto rico on twitter, saying the mayor of san juan who was very complimentary only a few days ago has now been told by the democrats that you must be nasty to trump. such poor leadership ability by the mayor of san juan and others in puerto rico who are not able to get their workers to help, they want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 federal workers now on island doing a fantastic job. again, these are tweets from president trump this morning. a local tech investor is donating $10 million to puerto rico relief.

orlando bravo is a native of the island. "the chronicle" reports he chartered a jet from the bay area with 100 water purifiers and two dozen medical iv bags. the donations will come from his bravo family foundation that supports social justice in hispanic and latino communities. a truck full of diapers from here in the bay area is headed to storm victims in houston. abc 7 news was at the emeryville packed a truck. a woman organized the event as she found out that federal disaster agencies don't provide money for diapers. >> i figured the most vulnerable people are people in days iaper. >> it doesn't matter if you're 80, it doesn't matter if you're 20. if you depend on clean diapers every day, you need help. there's a donation drive

today from 1:00 to 4:00 in downtown oakland to help victims of hurricane maria. we have more information on that and how you can donate to help the victims of both maria and irma on our website, abc7news.com. new developments this morning. the air force academy has given the all clear after a part of the campus was put on lockdown. authorities say there were no shots fired or injuries. the academy's prep school near colorado springs went on lockdown overnight after reports of an active shooter. investigators say everyone is safe. geologsts say the danger from another rock fall at yosemite national park is no greater than it usually is. one climber was killed and two others injured after two slides at el capitan on wednesday and thursday. the one thursday involved a slab of rock the size of a 36-story building. it was many times the size of the one on wednesday. the rubble broke through the sunroof of an suv and injured jim evans of florida.

rock falls happen regularly inside the park. nearly 60 were reported last year. >> heating from the sun has turned out to be an explanation for some of the rock falls. >> ice and water also cause slides. experts say there were two in a row this week because when rocks start falling in one area, they're likely to continue coming down. several wildfires in santa barbara county are burning right now. hundreds of people have been forced out of their homes yesterday. but evacuation orders were lifted late last night. one shed was damaged. the fire has burned 600 acres so far and is 10% contained. no word yet on how it started. a brentwood family says the city isn't doing enough to clean up a potential health risk on their property. dozens of protected birds are nesting in a city-owned tree that hangs over their yard. abc 7 news reporter katie utehs has more on the mess the flock

left behind. >> reporter: more than 30 birds, egrets and herons, nested in danielle witrykus's backyard. the flocks held the family hostage. >> it was about the june time frame that we had to stop opening our windows because the smell was so bad, we were afraid for our children especially to be breathing that kind of smell. >> reporter: there was nothing the brentwood family could do about the federally protected birds at the time. now that the birds have migrated, city workers trimmed the tree. but the remaining bird waste concerns the family. danielle's 5-year-old daughter built this fairy garden last sum and her loved playing with it. but as you can see, it is disgusting. the family is unsure how to clean up this potentially toxic mess. >> you can feel it in your nostrils, it's almost stinging, especially when it's very warm or if the dust is picked up, you can feel it heavy on your chest. >> reporter: we spoke with the

city's mayor. he admits there's a tangled nest of government agencies involved. from the birds' federal protection status to the state's department of fish and wildlife. >> there's a lot of pass the buck and not wanting to deal with it. >> reporter: danielle wants the tree gone so the birds don't come back next year. she's meeting with the city's parks and rec director monday. in brentwood, katie utehs, abc 7 news. time now is 5:08. it's that time again, the bay bridge is scheduled to close this morning to continue the implosion of marine foundations from the old eastern span. the bridge is scheduled to shut down sometime between 9:00 and 1:00 a.m. for 30 minutes total. this will be the final step in removing what's left of the old bridge. meteorologist lisa argen is here. >> it looks pretty nice out there. we'll have the fire danger increase over the weekend. the winds will pick up out of

this morning hundreds of students at a south bay school are in possession of a new ipad. district officials say they're priceless when it comes to bridging the digital divide.

abc 7 reporter katie marzullo has the story. >> reporter: the shepherd middle school campus is packed. >> it feels exciting. >> reporter: hundreds of families waiting to pick up a new, free ipad. >> now we just have carry this small tablet around and we have all of our school lists, all of the homework. it's easy now. >> reporter: verizon donated 600 ipads to shepherd middle school, part of a program to help bridge the digital divide. >> my teacher for math, she gives us points by using i-ready, and how many sessions and minutes we use. that will be really good to raise my grade. >> reporter: the principal is as enthusiastic as the students. >> i talk to them about making books, not typing a paper, making a book. we're super excited about the applications that come on the ipad. >> reporter: these 600 ipads are actually part of a bigger picture. there are nearly 2,000 ipads going to students at three middle schools complete with a two-year data plan. >> it's about providing

opportunities to our families to excel, to prepare them for 21st century jobs. >> reporter: students have the chance to kick smart soccer balls and go bowling using robots controlled by iphones. >> i loved it, actually. >> reporter: and how is this for high tech? >> i want to give you guys props. >> reporter: inspirational posters that come to life through an app. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. volunteers pitched in to clean up an east bay campground that builds positive relationships between youth and police in oakland. 150 volunteers from pg&e and the a's came together to restore the facility. it badly needed new roofing for cabins. the grounds cleaned up and the basketball court patched up. the camp is accepting donations to buy more beds and refrigerators. now to an exciting look at what's next for the warriors. the team broke ground on its billion dollar san francisco

arena in january. abc 7 sports director larry beil got an exclusive look at how construction is coming along. >> reporter: the tour starts with a view from above. the chase center construction site is a beehive of activity. when it's done, this will be more than just an arena. the idea is to create a destination. >> all the way around, the arena becomes beautiful public space. >> it's amazing, i can' wait to go down there. >> they've thought of everything. they even have the warriors logo on the hardhat here. would i take this for my own? i would never do such a thing. well -- >> reporter: and we head into the belly of the beast. >> all right. let's watch the rebar here, right? >> so i'm doing this with you for the first time. this is, you know, if you can imagine the view, right, so this is how people are going to cross the street from the park, and this is one of the two main entrances. >> you've got the foundation down, and you're about to start going up.

you know, a million hours of meetings, i think it's a real exhilerating feeling that just puts a big smile on my face. >> reporter: larry beil, abc 7 sports. a lot of people have expressed concern about traffic and parking. the best way to go will be public transportation. the new central subway will drop you right in front of the arena. it will connect you with b.a.r.t. if you're heading in from the east bay, that will be your best bet. abc 7 news was at the park yesterday as the warriors revealed two basketball courts, leading a hundred kids at a clinic at the courts. they say it's important for them to have a safe place to play. >> after they watch the warriors play, they obviously want to work on their game somewhere. now they have someplace that's safe. there was dips, cracks, the rooms weren't nice, it wasn't

safe. >> the kids received free backpacks and got a chance to pose with the championship trophy. more than 1 million people will soon converge on san francisco's waterfront for fleet week and other events will be happening at the same time, all likely to make traffic even worse than it already is. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the details. >> reporter: take a deep breath and leave 20 minutes earlier, and you'll be good. >> that's a forklift operator's advice. fleet week begins sunday when the first navy ships arrive through the golden gate. >> with 1.5 million visitors, we highly encourage everybody to take transit. >> reporter: not far away, howard street between third and fourth is closed, detours in place.

setup is happening for oracle open world at moscone center. it will bring an additional 60,000 people to the city. that means more cars, a lot more, will clog city streets, where traffic is already a big bummer. what do you think of the traffic? >> so bad. >> okay, i won't be back down here at all. >> reporter: it's not the first time major events have collided in october. >> last year we had dream force occurring at the same time as fleet week. >> reporter: san francisco police plan an increased security presence inside the events and extra marine units on the bay will keep voters safe. last year a boat capsized during the air show. everyone on board was rescued. as for log jams on city streets. >> if you do have to use your vehicle, just be we're there's going to be some traffic. so expect delays. plan your time accordingly. you'll see officers in the area trying to assist with the traffic as well. >> put on a good radio station and you'll be all good. >> reporter: good advice, wanda. in san francisco, cornell

happening today, they're getting ready for a party in sunol. many also want peace and quiet. highway 84 will be closed to fremont today. the closure is for the nicely canyon roll and stroll. it lets people walk, bike, or skate through niles canyon. alameda county will use the event to get the word out that state regulators okay'd sunol as a quiet zone. new visual safety warnings will be put in place at crossings. good saturday morning to you. we do have patchy fog east bay and south bay. north bay is clear. that's why we have once again our coolest conditions. a live look outside from the city. it's 56 downtown, 58 in mountain view, 57 at gilroy, half moon bay, and low 60s towards san jose. another pretty picture here. our sea breeze will kick up today. the winds are going to shift

today, bringing in drier air and lower relative humidity through the overnight hours. 53 in napa. 60 in concord. we are looking at a nice weekend ahead, although the increase in neither danger will bring those gusty winds in the hills tonight into tomorrow. so mild and sunny elsewhere over the weekend. and looking for a cooler several days next week. so beginning to feel like fall. let's take a look at that wind profile, beginning tonight. so look at the colors. you'll notice the yellow and the purple here. that's where we have the breeziest winds. as we get in through the overnight hours, they begin to kick up here in the higher elevations. here we are at 7:00 tomorrow morning. and we still have wind gusts over 25 miles an hour out of the northeast in the higher elevations. it's still quite gusty along the coast. throughout the rest of the day on sunday, they'll begin to dial back. you have to keep that in mind if you're out and about, the air certainly dries out too quick around here this time of year.

meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the weather conditions where you live, hi, lisa. >> hi, chris, good morning to you. pretty good looking weekend. the atmosphere will continue to dry out. we have a fire watch in effect for today and tomorrow. 58 in mountain view. those winds are going to kick up tonight through tomorrow morning in the north bay mountains, the east bay hills, the diablo range, with northeast winds up to 25 and 30 miles per hour, allowing the relative humidity to plummet once again. this morning, 50s and 60s, plenty of sunshine with 70s at the bay, 60s at the coast. by the afternoon we're enjoying upper 60s shoreline, mid-70s around the bay, and low 80s inland. so very pleasant day. we'll talk about how breezy the winds will goet and how cool ou forecast will become as we get into october, just a day away, chris. >> lisa, thank you. the secretary of health and human services has been forced to resign because of a travel scandal. tom price is accused of

excessively using private planes for travel. now congress is investigating and has asked for the travel records of all 24 federal agencies. abc news reporter serena marshall has more from washington. >> reporter: a 13th trump administration official is out of a job. this time health and human services secretary tom price resigning following revelations he racked up more than $400,000 in two dozen chartered flights on the taxpayer's dime. the president not hiding his displeasure. >> i didn't like it, cosmetically or otherwise. i was disappointed. >> reporter: price had agreed to pay back the government. but only for the cost of his seat. >> he's paying back $52,000 and the planes cost -- >> that's unacceptable. no, that would be unacceptable. >> reporter: price's resignation comes as secretaries steve mnuchin and scott pruitt are also be investigated for their

travel. now a fourth and fifth cabinet member are being added to the list. ryan zinke defiant. >> i would like to address a little bs on travel. >> reporter: defending his flights, admitting to three since his confirmation, totaling $12,000. and veterans affairs secretary david shulkin. "the washington post" reporting taxpayers paid for him and his wife to fly to europe for a work trip where they also attended wimbledon and took in the sights. the inspector general wrote, i hope this will decrease the travel and generate savings, writing to the heads of all federal agencies, reminding them every dime they spend is the taxpayers'. serena marshall, abc news, washington. former arizona sheriff joe arpaio told his california supporters he is not a racist. more than 100 protesters and

supporters gathered last night in fresno as the former sheriff spoke at a republican fundraiser. he says he didn't ask for president trump to pardon him immigration patrols but said he was not guilty and that the real story will come out soon. arpaio also said he believes a border wall will stop drug traffic from coming into the country. spacex chief elon musk says a planned mega rocket to take astronauts to mars could also be used as a high speed commercial airliner. musk described the plan during a presentation in australia. he said the rocket could carry passengers between most cities in the world in about half an hour. new york to shanghai in just 39 minutes. musk says it could be as safe as modern day jet travel. >> once you're out of the atmosphere, you will go smoothly, no turbulence, there's no weather, no atmosphere. if we're building this thing to go to the moon and mars, why not go to other places on earth as

well? >> musk says revenue from launching satellites and sending supplies and crews to the space station could pay for it. he said a seat could cost about the same as a full fare economy plane ticket. halloween is a month away, but if you want a pumpkin, you might want to act fast. farmers in the san joaquin valley say because of historic rains last spring and extreme heat this summer, the harvest is already down 25%. growers haven't seen it this bad in 15 years, and it could get worse as we get closer to the holiday. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony went out to the clayton valley pumpkin farm to see how conditions are in the area. >> reporter: it's the beginning of the season for east bay pumpkin patches. things are looking good, especially to those who make getting here early a priority. >> we always come early. we come here to play. he gets all his energy out. then we get to pick out pumpkins. >> reporter: you like to get out

early and get the best selection? >> yes, we do. we have to pick out the pumpkins and have them speak to us. >> reporter: for this family, shopping for pumpkins is a relatively new tradition. >> our son's first birthday. we wanted to come out and celebrate his birthday. >> reporter: you might have to pick another one. while things look good now, there is some concern among central valley growers that supply the bay area that the pumpkin inventory could run low come mid-october. thanks to extreme heat over the summer. >> the heat affects crops differently. the rain affects crops. so it's just kind of, we don't know every year what we're going to get. >> reporter: at this pumpkin patch in concord, they believe they're good to go through halloween, in part because they don't get their pumpkins from california. >> to my knowledge, it's business as usual for us. the farms that we have based up in oregon are supplying, and we've had no word coming through that we're going to have any struggle with anything here. >> reporter: still, some people

orange county are recovering in the hospital after she received one of his kidneys. >> i have this person in my life willing to, you know, give me his kidney to save me. that's really powerful. >> reporter: van den bergh has been living with poly cystic kidney disease for 30 years. it's a genetic disease that causes cysts to grow uncontrollably in the kidneys. facing kidney failure and dialysis, van den bergh turned to social media last year with the hope of finding a living kidney donor. >> we were what the doctors call a perfect match. it was more of a familial relationship. we could be brothers and sisters. >> reporter: harrold came up with an elaborate plan, getting van den bergh to at&t park with the big news that he was a match. but she would have to wear a royals jersey. >> she loves to love in general. everyone that knows her, adores her. >> reporter: flash forward to this fall. the transplant surgeon says it

happening today, the san jose earthquakes are giving a young boy with leukemia a once in a lifetie chance to be a pro soccer player. 8-year-old jason was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer this year. he'll sign a one-day contract with the quakes and serve as honorary captain. he'll greet his teammates as they come out of the player tunnel, all part of major leak soccer's childhood awareness

month. also happening today, volunteers are cleaning up neighborhoods near coyote creek in san jose. more than 150 people will clear debris in nearby waterways. coyote creek flooded in february, causing 100 million dollars in property damage. there are two clean ups today, the first starts at 8:30 this morning. the other begins at 9:30. we'll bring in our meteorologist lisa argen. do you think they'll need their sweaters or light jacket in the morning in san jose? >> perhaps. but i would say not. it's just going to be around 60 degrees. we are looking at temperatures right now in the upper 50s from our east bay hills camera. here is a live look outside, just a little bit in the way of fog out there. the fog is causing some issues in napa and santa rosa with a quarter mile visibility. we'll talk about wall to wall sunshine today and breezy offshore winds in just a few minutes with my accuweather seven-day forecast. also next, the giants need
