good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. >> this is "abc 7 mornings." >> it's saturday, september 30th. good morning and thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. let's start with a first look at the forecast. here's meteorologist lisa argen, hi, lisa. >> hi, chris. patchy fog is around the bay. we're also looking sunshine as well. as we go in closer to the visibility in miles, it's less than a quarter in napa and santa rosa at a quarter of a mile. it lowers and thickens before it clears on out.

60 in hayward and fremont. 52 in novato. 57 on the coast. your forecast today calls for a lot of sunshine with temperatures climbing through the 60s and 70s throughout the next few hours. by noontime we should be in mid-70s inland. by about 4:00 p.m., lower 80s should do it for inland valleys. 70s around the bay. mid- and upper 60s at the coast. near average, but boy, the winds kick up tonight, chris. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news, chp is investigating a deadly crash in oakland on interstate 880. investigators say a woman driving the wrong way crashed into another car on the northbound side of the freeway, just south of broadway. it happened at around 4:20 this morning. police say the drivers of both cars died in the accident. you can see in this video debris from the wreck scattered across several lanes on the interstate. the three left lanes are expected to open within the next half hour. hurricane maria pummeled puerto rico about a week and a half ago. this morning, much of the island is still without power.

residents don't have enough water. and there is an urgent need for medical supplies. but people here in the bay area are mobilizing to help. abc 7 news reporter lonni rivera has the story. >> i wish they were good. i'm hoping if they see this, i love them. >> reporter: irma is worried sick about her family in puerto rico. this text from tuesday is the last time she's heard from them saying they were okay. >> mommy, i love you. i'm doing everything that i can to provide help for my family. >> reporter: she thought the best way to use her time was to raise money. so she and her tech colleagues gathered at this soma startup for a burger and beer fundraiser. >> people are dying because of the lack of action from our government. so we as puerto ricans have to do something. ♪ >> reporter: at the great american music hall friday night, a different fundraiser. all proceeds from draco rosa's

survey the island's damage on tuesday. this morning, he criticized government officials in puerto rico on twitter, saying the mayor of san juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the democrats that you must be nasty to trump. such poor leadership ability by the mayor of san juan and others in puerto rico who are not able to get their workers to help, they want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. 10,000 federal workers now on island doing a fantastic job. the mayor tweeted her response an hour later, saying, the goal is one, saving lives. this is the time to show our true colors. we cannot be distracted by anything else. a local tech investor is donating $10 million to puerto rico relief. orlando bravo is a native of the island. "the chronicle" reports he chartered a jet from the bay area with 100 water purifiers and two dozen medical iv bags. the donations come from his

family foundation that supports social justice and hispanic and latino communities. a truck full of diapers from the bay area is headed to storm victims in houston. abc 7 news was at the emeryville target parking lot where people packed a truck. a radio host organized the event after she found out federal agencies don't provide money for diapers. >> the must vulnerable people are the people in diapers, it doesn't matter if you're 80, it doesn't matter if you're 20. if you depend on a clean diaper every single day, you need help. >> the truck will be sent to the texas diaper bank which gave away diapers in the first 72 hours after hurricane harvey hit. there is a donation drive in downtown oakland for victims of hurricane maria, from 11:00 to 4:00 at jamtown on 4th street. you can find out more on our website, abc7news.com.

new developments this morning. the air force academy has been given the all clear after a part of its campus was put on lockdown. authorities say there were no shots fired or injuries. the academy's prep school near colorado springs went on lockdown overnight after reports of an active shooter. investigators say everyone is safe. geologists say the danger of another giant rock fall at yosemite national park is no greater than usual. one climber was killed and two injured after two slides at especialel capitan on wednesday and thursday. the one on thursday was many times the size of the one on wednesday. the rubble broke through the sunroof of an suv and injured jim evans of florida. rock falls happen regularly inside the park. nearly 60 were reported last year. >> heating from the sun has turned out to be an explanation for some of the rock falls. >> ice and water also cause slides. experts say there were two in a

row this week because when rocks start falling in one area, they're likely to continue coming down. several wildfires in santa barbara county are burning right now. hundreds of people have been forced out of their homes yesterday. but evacuation orders were lifted late last night. one shed was damaged. the fire has burned 600 acres so far and is 10% contained. no word yet on how it started. a brentwood family says the city is not doing enough to clean up a potential health risk on their property. dozens of protected birds were nesting in a city-owned tree that hangs over their yard. abc 7 news reporter katie utehs has more on the mess the flock left behind. >> reporter: more than 30 birds, egrets and herons, nested in this city-owned tree next to danielle witrykus's backyard. we showed you the problem earlier this month. feces, dead birds, and dead fish. the flocks held the family hostage. >> it was about the june time frame that we had to stop

opening our windows because the smell was so bad, we were afraid for our children especially to be breathing that kind of smell. >> reporter: there was nothing the brentwood family could do about the federally protected birds at the time. now that the birds have migrated, city workers trimmed the tree. but the remaining bird waste concerns the family. danielle's 5-year-old daughter built this fairy garden last summer and loved playing with it. but as you can see, it is disgusting. the family is unsure how to clean up this potentially toxic mess. >> you can feel it in your nostrils, it's almost stinging, especially when it's very warm or if the dust is picked up, you can feel it heavy on your chest. >> reporter: we spoke with the city's mayor. he admits there's a tangled nest of government agencies involved. from the birds' federal protection status to the state's department of fish and wildlife. >> there's a lot of pass the buck and not wanting to deal with it. >> reporter: danielle wants the tree gone so the birds don't come back next year. she's meeting with the city's

parks and rec director monday. in brentwood, katie utehs, abc 7 news. it's that time again. the bay bridge is scheduled to close this morning to continue the implosion of marine foundations from the old eastern span. the bridge is scheduled to shut down sometime between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. for about 30 minutes total. this will be the third of six scheduled implosions and the final step in removing what's left of the old bridge. meteorologist lisa argen is here. we're off to a mild start. >> we are, 51, still some fog. 61 in san jose. pretty nice out there, you can see the marine layer and looking wall to wall sunshine throughout the day today. we'll talk about how warm you'll get in your neighborhood and a look at the first week of october, in just a few minutes. >> lisa, thank you. also next, a volcanic eruption captured on video. why the photographer says he was caught by surprise. and this is what it will look like once it's all finished.

mountain erupting on wednesday. the eruption, in north sumatra, caught the videographer by surprise, he says he didn't expect the eruption to happen then. the volcano has erupted many times in recent years. it comes as the country was already on high alert for the eruption of another bali. pro athletes are taking the knee during the national anthem. last night the nba issued a memo that says players and coaches are expected to remain standing. our sister network espn reports the league may discipline players who violate the rule. the memo says teams can address politics with a pre-game address at their first home games. no word yet whether the warriors plan to comply. now to an exciting look at what's next for the warriors. the team broke ground on its billion dollar san francisco

arena back in january. abc 7 sports director larry beil got an exclusive look at how construction is coming along. >> reporter: the tour starts with a view from above. the chase center construction site is a beehive of activity. when it's done, this will be more than just an arena. the idea is to create a destination. >> all the way around, the arena becomes beautiful public space. >> it's amazing, i can't wait to go down there. >> they've thought of everything. they even have the warriors logo on the hardhat here. would i take this for my own? i would never do such a thing. well -- >> reporter: and we head into the belly of the beast. >> all right. let's watch the rebar here, right? >> so i'm doing this with you for the first time. this is, you know, if you can imagine the view, right, so this is how people are going to cross the street from the park, and this is one of the two main entrances. >> you've got the foundation down, and you're about to start going up.

volunteers are cleaning up neighborhoods near coyote creek in san jose. more than 150 people will clear the debris in nearby waterways. coyote creek flooded in february, causing $100 million in property damage. there are two cleanups happening today. the first one meets behind shirakawa elementary school and starts at 8:30 this morning. the other is at the outdoor classroom on william street and begins at 9:30. more than a million people will soon converge on san francisco's waterfront for fleet week and other events will be happening at the same time, all likely to make traffic even worse than it already is. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the details. >> take a deep breath and leave 20 minutes earlier, and you'll be good. >> reporter: that's a forklift operator's advice. traffic could raise your blood pressure next week, when major events are about to launch. the blue angels will be returning to the bay area in a matter of days. fleet week begins sunday when

the first navy ships arrive through the golden gate. throngs of air show spectators won't be far behind on the embarcadero. >> with 1.5 million visitors, we highly encourage everybody to take transit. >> reporter: not far away, howard street between third and fourth is closed, detours in place. setup is happening for oracle open world at moscone center. the conference from october 1st through 5th will bring an additional 60,000 people to the city. that means more cars, a lot more, will clog city streets, where traffic is already a big bummer. what do you think of the traffic? >> so bad. >> okay, i won't be back down here at all. >> reporter: it's not the first time major events have collided in october. >> last year we had dream force occurring at the same time as fleet week. >> reporter: san francisco police plan an increased security presence around the events and extra marine units on the bay will keep voters safe. last year a boat capsized during the air show. everyone on board was rescued. as for log jams on city streets.

rosa and napa. 60 in concord, good morning to you in livermore at 59. here is the fog from mt. tam. you'll notice it's a little breezy in the upper elevations as that camera shakes around and those winds are going to be playing a big factor in our forecast throughout the weekend. drying out the atmosphere particularly tonight and tomorrow as the winds shift from an onshore component to an offshore component. we'll have a mild and sunny weekend with cooler numbers coming into play next week. so hot fire danger from 9:00 tomorrow through 9:00 tomorrow morning through the north and east bay hills, winds gusting to 30 miles per hour possible. that dries out the air, as you know. as you look at the color contour here from the purple to the yellow, that's where the higher winds come into play overnight tonight out of the north, 20 miles an hour. as we go through your sunday morning, notice 30-mile-per-hour gusts off the coast. the direction is still out of the north as we go through the afternoon. we're lookin at temperatures once again not too warm.

in november. former arizona sheriff joe arpaio told his california supporters that he is not a racist. more than 100 protesters and supporters gathered last night in fresno as the former sheriff spoke at a republican fundraiser. he said he didn't ask president trump to pardon him but said he was not guilty and the real story will come out soon. arpaio also said he believes a border wall will stop drug traffic from coming into the country. spacex chief elon musk says a planned mega rocket that takes astronauts to mars could be used as a high speed commercial airliner. musk described the plan during a presentation in australia. he said the rocket would carry passengers between most cities in the world in about half an hour. new york to shanghai in just 39 minutes. musk says it could be as safe as modern day jet travel. >> once you're out of the atmosphere, you will go as smooth as silk, no turbulence,

temperate weather throughout the weekend, although the winds are going to be bringing in some drier air. in fact that's going to happen as soon as tonight. but we are looking at some of these forecast features that will spell out the weekend and the week beyond. so sunny skies will dominate today. those northeasterly winds will work to dry out the air once again. tomorrow, overnight tonight, then into tomorrow, it will ease up. we'll be looking at cooler weather and more sun around the bay, because this fog that you see right here, well, as it gets swept away, we're not going to see much of it reform at all in the next several days. live doppler 7 picking up on just some patchy areas of fog, especially down around san luis obispo, the central coast. the national weather service has highlighted high fire danger from 9:00 p.m. until 9:00 tomorrow morning. we get a wind shift offshore tomorrow. the north and east bay

mountains, 25 to 30-mile-an-hour northeast winds, that brings down the relative humidity. right now we have the fog and the humidity is up. we're looking at a pretty nice start to the day, 60 in the city, 61 in san josé. 57 half moon bay. a lot of sunshine, even at the coast, with upper 60s half moon bay, pacifica, later on today. right now it's 58 by the delta, 53 in santa rosa. let's get back to the winds. you notice the color contours, red and purple, that's where we have gusty winds tonight. north bay mountains, east bay hills, out of the north, gut to go 25-mile-per-hour. by 7:00 tomorrow morning, it's breezy out there, a straight north wind by the coast. by the rest of the day, the winds still out of the north. they shouldn't be as gusty, but still we're looking at some dangerous dry air headed our way. but if you are headed to the peninsula, the sea breeze today will feel pretty good, allowing for upper 60s 11:00, mid- to
