breaking news in half moon bay where highway 1 is closed after a chp car hit and killed a pedestrian. it happened just outside of sam's chowder house. thanks for joining us. tiffany wilson just tweeted that video you saw. tiffany? >> reporter: that's right, eric, we arrived about ten minutes ago. it is still a very active scene. the chp officer who hit that pedestrian was traveling northbound on highway 1 when he struck the man right in front of sam's chowder house. the pedestrian was a 74-year-old filipino man from burlingame. a worker at sam's chowder house and another bystander said the man was part of a wedding reception being celebrated at

the chowder house tonight. now, that man was rendered aid by the fire department but he did die here at the scene. this happened at 8:24 p.m. a portion of highway 1 has been closed since a few minutes after the accident. highway 1 is expected to remain closed for at least four more hours, as san mateo sheriff's department continues to route cars along different side streets. but highway 1 is closed between cap i strano road and coronado street. the officer involved in the accident was taken back to the station and vallejo police will take over the investigation. it is still very busy out here. so if you have to travel through this area, be wary of the road closures. again, a 74-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a chp vehicle earlier this evening. reporting live in half moon bay, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news.

to the other top story now. all eyes are on the warriors and nuggets before the preseason game at oracle arena, after controversy over national anthem protests. lonnie rivera has the story from oakland. >> reporter: you could feel the energy as the warriors returned to the hardwood at oracle saturday for the first time since winning the championship in june. before the game -- the warriors all stood for the national anthem. their opponents, the denver nuggets linked arms. their way of protesting inequality. >> i think the fact that they actually stood and locked arms is basically showing their commitment to doing what's right. >> reporter: the move is the latest in ongoing protests by professional athletes that started with former 49er colin kaepernick. >> we wanted to do something as

a unit. we linked arms. >> i stressed on them the importance of respecting our flag. but if they wanted to do something to show some kind of unity and solidarity, i was all for it. >> reporter: the nba requires players and coaches to stand for the anthem but is encouraging teams to address the issue with pre-game speeches. >> for all the racial inequality, the police brutality, the things that people are protesting right now. hopefully our guys will take that to heart and do that when we get home. >> i hope it doesn't come to any of the sports. i don't think it's the place for it. >> reporter: on this night the warriors did not protest the national anthem. >> we don't need to please anybody. our team doesn't. no matter what we do, we're going to take criticism. >> we don't need to. to do anything else to show where we stand. >> reporter: because they all stood doesn't mean the players are done voicing their opinions. in oakland, lonnie rivera, abc 7

news. switching gears now. amid the destruction and devastation in puerto rico, a twitter war has now broken out between president trump and the mayor of san juan. the president accuses the mayor of poor leadership. here's abc news reporter linda lopez. >> reporter: there is no unity, at least on twitter about the giant relief efforts to help millions of victims in storm ravaged puerto rico. president trump complaining about san juan's mayor, tweeting, such poor leadership ability by the mayors and others in puerto rico who are not able to get their workers to help. they want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort. cruz replying -- >> i don't have time for idle talk. i'm worried about one thing, saving lives. >> reporter: cruz may have set off president trump by accusing his administration of killing us with the inefficiency ten days after maria devastated the island.

>> i've been involved with many disasters. this is the worst i've seen. >> reporter: meanwhile, cruz has been out in the flooded streets, locating survivors, speaking to residents, handing out supplies. so far, nem r fema has distributed more than 1.3 million meals. and the military is working with the island's officials and national guard. >> we've been distributing food and water and they deserve all the help we can give them. >> reporter: but the president tweeting saturday night, results of recovery efforts will speak much louder than complaints by san juan mayor. the president and first lady are expected in puerto rico on tuesday. when asked, mayor cruz said she has no problem meeting with the president when he arrives. linda lopez, abc news, new york. families around the bay area are showing support for puerto rico. fund-raisers were held in both

an 80-year-old man is dead after he was murdered late last night. police have arrested the victim's son. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has the story from oakland tonight. >> a big shocker. >> reporter: residents of this affluent upper rockwood neighborhood are stubbed over the murder of a beloved neighbor. >> jovial. >> reporter: relatives tell abc 7 news, 80-year-old earnest clark was killed in his home.

he suffered major trauma to the head, during an assault late friday night. his daughter was also injured in the attack. >> i don't know why anyone would want to hurt him. >> reporter: oakland police arrested a suspect. clark's son is in custody for the crime. neighbor damian park said a true friend to all. >> great neighbor to have. looking out for people. watching the warriors games. great guy. >> reporter: the family just celebrated clark's 80th birthday. >> they had a huge party last weekend with valley service. so the street was blocked off. people from all over oakland coming up here. >> reporter: police say a motive for the crime isn't known. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. with two big blasts, another piece of bay area history disappeared today. video from cal trans shows two of the old bay bridge peers

number 9 and number 10 being imploded around 9:30 this morning. this is the third of a series of the old eastern span scheduled through november. you can see from the toll plaza camera, cal trans briefly stopped all traffic on the bridge as a safety precaution. eight more piers are set to come down in about two weeks. important information, the press democrat reports some casino customers may have had their names, addresses and social security numbers compromise. a spokeswoman said human error caused the personal information to go out in a hidden attachment in a small number of e-mails. the e-mails went out between february and august of this year. the customers affected will get a letter in the mail. the casino is offering them a free one-year subscription to a credit monitoring service. an east bay football game had to end early. a fight happened at el se rito

desperation is growing. people are waiting in line to get water from mountain streams. he says they can live without power, but they can't live without water, that's why they're filling spring water from the mountainside to take a bath, to cook, to eat. people are even resorting to washing clothes like this. this is juan. she's been here since this morning washin clothes. five to six hours cleaning clothes she tells me. i'm asking her where's the help? she said there's no help. no help has arrived here. no help at all. none from the local government, residents say, nor from fema, who is only here to do an assessment, not to deliver any aid. the people here are now in
