[ gunfire ] >> raining gunfire on concertgoers in las vegas. the death toll keeps climbing. at least 58 killed, more than 500 injured in the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. police say the gunman was on the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel when he opened fire on more than 22,000 people below. thanks for joining us, i'm al alexis smith. kristen sze will be in later today. at this point authorities say there's no connection to international terrorism. they say the shooter, stephen paddock, checked into the hotel thursday. then last night, smashed a hotel window and fired for 4 1/2

minu minu minutes. let's check in now with our abc correspondent live at the scene. >> reporter: with the number of deaths and injuries continuing to rise, las vegas police are trying to figure out what the motivation was of this shooter here. and today, president trump calling this shooting pure evil. terrifying gunfire on what started as a peaceful night of country music on the vegas strip. >> i heard it, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: blast of automattive gunfire, bullets flying into a crowd of 22,000 concertgoers who were enjoying a country music festival with superstar jason aldean. >> people started dropping around us, lot of dead bodies, lot of people were just piling on top of whoever, even if they're bleeding or not. >> reporter: a high wall enclosing part of the concert venue. >> there is now -- we were just pinned in. >> reporter: so many people shot and wounded. >> gentleman that was shot and

he said can you help me? and so i put him in my car and had, like, six people in my car, people with shoes. >> reporter: police jumping into action. >> one police officer, he just was so brave, he was jumping over the fence like to go -- to go fight this -- to take on this guy. i'm like, oh, my god. >> reporter: police say the gunman, 64-year-old stephen paddock, sprayed bullets from the 32nd floor of the mandalay bay hotel. s.w.a.t. teams racing there to breach paddock's hotel room with explosive devices. >> breach, breach, breach. >> reporter: authorities say he was already dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> the number of people that have died associated in wthis event has increased. right now we're using the number of 58. >> reporter: president trump reacts to the tragedy. >> it was an act of pure evil. >> reporter: sources say the suspect had a combination of handguns and rifles in his hotel

room. law enforcement here in las vegas saying that they do not believe this was a terrorist act, but do believe it was a lone wolf attack. reporting live from las vegas, danya bacchus, abc knnews, backo you. >> we want to take a closer look at the area where the shooting took place. this highlights the conner is grounds for the route 91 harvest festival, the area highlighted in red across the street from the mandalay bay resort. the question is what went wrong with stephen paddock? his girlfriend might hold answers. marilou darrley was out of the country when the shooting happened. they don't believe she was involved in the shooting in any way. police say paddock used her i.d. to check into the hotel. darley lived with him in mesquite, nevada, an hour outside las vegas. federal authorities are processing their home searching for any evidence that would give them some insight into a

possible motive. neighbors say they saw paddock and his girlfriend together in the last couple weeks and there was no sign of distress. the suspect's brother lives in florida. he says the mass shooting just doesn't make sense. >> i mean, when you get a phone call that says your brother, you know, just killed a bunch of people, i mean i can show you the text, he said, how's mom? find out who he got the machine guns from. i'm -- where the hell did he get the machine guns? >> eric paddock says his brother had no religious or political affiliation. las vegas authorities and the fbi are denying reports that paddock was connected to isis. this morning, the terror group claimed responsibility for the attack saying paddock was one of its soldiers who converted to islam months ago. an fbi agent connected to this investigation said that is absolutely false and they've determined no connection to international terrorist groups. eyewitness accounts of the shooting are continuing to pour

in this morning. abc news reporter matt gutman fau talked to a man who used hi own shirt to stop the bleeding of one of the victims. >> we were at the concert there, jason aldean was playing, kind of sounded like fireworks going off then i think there was, like, the first kind of volley, then the second volley, my bu y buddy's like i got hit, got hit three times and people started diving for the ground. >> this man and three others grabbed four victims including the friend who was shot in the chest. they put them in the back of a pickup truck and tried to drive for help. however, authorities turned them around because of the active situation. eventually they ran into paramedics but it was too late for one of the victims. matt gutman talked with the witness again a little later on. >> we were loading them in the ambulance, the guy said, you know, let's set them down here so i set them down with myself and the young man passed away. >> he literally died in your arms? >> yeah.

been a tough night. >> this good samaritan said he and others were literally using their fingers to plug bullet holes in victims. thankfully, though, there was some good news for this guy. his friend who was shot in the chest three times is expected to be okay. if you're worried about a family member or a friend, las vegas police have set up a phone number to help people establish whether their loved ones are safe. here's the number, 1-866-535-5654. bay area residents returning from las vegas appeared shaken and subdues after their plane landed at the airport. abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live at sfo with that part of our coverage. tiffany? >> reporter: alexis, next flight from las vegas that arrives here at sfo lands in just about an hour and a half. now, those who arrived earlier today and who were at the concert were too shaken to talk about it saying they just didn't have the words. but nose who were nearby on the strip shared their experience of navigating the panic.

the iconic lights of the las vegas strip shine over chaos in this cell phone video. >> that's the police going toward us. >> reporter: he was in the lobby of the mgm when the shooting started. he said rumors spread another gunman was inside. did you think you could die? >> honestly at some point because i heard people coming in and saying they are here, they are here, then at some point, we would all run around. >> reporter: this honeymooner was nearby. >> we were down in the basement of the casino, a few people who were part of the concert. i spoke to one man who his friend had been shot. they weren't sure where he was or what state he was in. >> reporter: a san francisco couple was up in the paris eiffel tower. >> they held us up there for an hour. >> reporter: this man was in the mandalay lobby with friends. >> we saw the chaos and panic at the time. >> reporter: landing at sfo, passengers expressed horror, shock, sadness and fear. >> makes you scared to go out at

night. >> reporter: some las vegas residents say they're heartbroken for everyone killed, injured and emotionally affected. >> completely devastating. >> reporter: others want action to prevent a mass shooting from happening again. >> guns. got to fix the problem. >> reporter: we also heard from passengers flying to las vegas today. kathleen is supposed to meet with a surgeon. >> i might get there and he can't meet because he's in surgery or something. >> reporter: kathleen reached out earlier this morning trying to get ahold of that surgeon. he did not respond. now she thinks he might have already been in the operating room helping some of the many injured. live at sfo, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> abc 7 news was at oakland airport where three flights to las vegas departed early this morning. travelers we spoke to say they are shocked and saddened by what happened but will not cancel their plans. the simmons family says they're meeting up with relatives from alaska in vegas for a family reunion. >> sure we won't go near mandalay bay for sure, but, no, they're here and they only come down, like, once a year, so, no,

we're going to go see them and try to have a good time, anyway. keep the families in our prayers. >> officials say passengers flying to las vegas should check their flight status before heading to the airport. country singer jason aldean is leading the wave of celebrity condolences for the victims in las vegas. he was on stage performing at the time of the shooting. he posted this photo on instagram with the words "pray for las vegas." his emotional post reads, the night has been horrific. my thought and prayers go out to anyone involved. it hurts my heart this would happen to anyone who was coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night. aldean was here in the bay area the night before the vegas shooting, sky 7 was over shoreline amphitheater in mountain view this morning. he performed there as part of his ongoing tour and has a show scheduled in los angeles on frid friday. other country artists are joining aldean in expressing condolences. luke owen tweeted, praying for

returning now to breaking news. as politicians across the country offer their thoughts and prayers to the victims of the mass shooting in las vegas. at least 58 people died when a

gunman police identified as stephen paddock fired rounds at a country music festival. congressman eric swalwell spoke with abc 7 news over the phone this morning. >> you can't help but think that congress has been so helpless on this issue. we have the most powerful democracy in the world but just continue to see a lack of will and courage to take on an issue that could reduce the number of times people have to watch this. >> swalwell says victims of recent mass shootings from las vegas to orlando to newton atowe owed a discussion on gun violence. federal authorities in the bay area are joining the investigation in las vegas, released a statement saying agents from atf san francisco field division responded to the scene in las vegas. atf will continue to work with local law enforcement and provide our resources." blood banks are looking for donors of all blood types to help the injured.

now your accuweather forecast with mike nicco. >> for a monday, mother nature, she dialed up a beautiful one. check out this picture from south beach. looking north. a new perspective for us. yeah, that's the richmond san rafael bridge. see up there heading into the napa valley, sonoma. high fire danger through tomorrow. that's our big weather highlight. i'll give you more on that in a second. the breezes will relax. a warming trend wednesday. look at this. the weekend warmth reaches our beaches. all right. let's take a look at that fire weather. high fire danger, red flag warning. up in north bay, it was extended yesterday until 5:00 tomorrow evening. for the east bay hills and diablo range, high fire danger until 11:00 this evening. what does that mean? if you live above 1,000 feet, going to be there at any time today, the winds are going to be gusting up to 50 miles per hour. low humidity, 8%. the air is dry.

the vegetation is dry. and it's easy to spark a fire and it's easy to spread it with these kind of winds. we need to be very diligent through tomorrow evening. temperatures, 69 san francisco, oakland, danville, san mateo. still 64 at half moon bay. 66 in los gatos. the rest 70 to 75 degrees outside. with the drier air, feels comfortable out there and will later on as we reach 80 in north bay. near that in the south bay. mid to upper 70s around the bay. mid, upper 60s at the coast. look at that, 73 in san francisco today. in fact, as you look back there, chamber of commerce day, isn't it? look at that from emeryville. the air is so clean you can almost see out to the fair lawns. you get an idea how clear the air is. passing cloud at noon. otherwise grab the sunglasses. you'll need it. total sunshine as we head toward 4:00. and as we head toward 8:00 into midnight, temperatures will drop back into the 60s and 50s. i think the breezes will relax. especially in the east bay hills and into the diablo range. h that's going to allow your

temperatures to be much cooler than they were this morning when they were stuck in the 60s. you'll be back in the 50s. still breezy up in the north bay. certain areas will be in the 60s. when you're in the deeper part of the valleys, you'll be in the 50s. here's my accuweather seven-day forecast. what we're seeing is a transition eventually over to high pressure, not before one more push of cool and dry air, in fact, some of the driest air of the season will be with us tomorrow. so you may notice that things may be a little dry on your hands and lips. as we head toward wednesday, the winds sub side. the warming trend begins. thursday is pretty comfortable. look at friday, saturday and sunday. we'll flirt with 90 inland, flirt with 80s around the bay and to the coast friday. then they'll relax a little bit saturday. sunday looks to be a little cooler at the coast. that cooling frie ining trend c into monday. looks like great weather for october. >> sure does. as soon as we switched over to october, it's like, leer cohere the warm temperatures again. heating back up. >> not quite as warm as it was

last time. good observation. >> you bet. to today's morning money report, if you take cal train, your commute will cost you more today. prices increase for both tickets and parking. adult fares are now 25 cents more and monthly parking went up more than 60% to $82.50. cal train last raised fares two years ago. the agency says it doesn't have a dedicated source of funding. with ridership setting records, ticket sales pay for two-thirds of the cost of running the transit system. and a warning if you have a netflix account. this could mean that you are targeted by scammers. users are getting scam e-mails claiming that there's a billing error and asking for updated payment information. the e-mail asks for you to e-mail or follow a link to a fake website to submit your bank details. if you receive an e-mail like this, do not click on that link. instead, log on to your netflix account through a web browser. all right. say with us
