coming up on 5:00 a.m. welcome to october 5. we're going to start with alexis and a look at a traffic alert. >> a little bit of a mystery as to what exactly we're dealing with but we do know southbound 101 is fully closed to 78 for t 83. so it's not a baby bump, it's a warm bump in your temperatures today. >> all right, mike, thank you. to the latest out of las vegas. trying to find out if the gunman had help. >> the shooter's girlfriend told the fbi she had no idea he was planning the attack. abc news reporter lana zak live with new information. lana? >> reporter: good morning to you, reggie and natasha. investigators say that in addition to the hotel suite that he had here at the mandalay bay hotel, he also had several other reservations all along the vegas strip and all of them, it appears, overlook the concert venue. >> right here, come in here.

>> reporter: you can see the heroism of ordinary americans in the worst of circumstances. >> bring the guy in the chair. >> reporter: victims of the las vegas shooting being led into a vehicle before it sped off to the hospital. one of those andrea castilla was out celebrating her 28th birthday with her sister athena. >> she deserved a chance to get help. she was literally dying in my arms. >> reporter: and in trying to piece together his motive, authorities have been questioning the shooter's girlfriend, marilou danley. danley says when stephen paddock sent her to the philippines and wired her money, she worried he was breaking up with her. authorities believe paddock had planned to escape and question if he really acted alone. >> it's troublesome this individual was able to move this amount of gear in a hotel room unassisted. >> reporter: and the authorities

say that he also had explosives in his vehicle along with about 1,600 more rounds of ammunition. they believe he had planned an escape but that he had monitored authorities as they came to his hotel room, and that's when he took his own life. lana zak, abc 7 news. reggie, back to you. the las vegas sheriff released this time line saying the first shots were fired at 10:05 p.m. seven minutes later at 10:12 the first officers arrived on the 31st floor and announced the gunfire coming directly from the floor above them. at 10:15 the suspect fires the last shots. two minutes later the officers arrived clearing every room before the longer heard any gunfire. >> family photos provided by

stacee etcheber's parents, she and her husband, vinnie, were at the concert. they were separated when vinnie went to help victims and told stacee to run to safety. vinnie couldn't locate her. her family checked all of the hospitals before vinnie reluctantly went to the morgue. >> put her pen down and said i'll be right back. she knew. she went back. she came back with a picture of stac stacee, and it was just -- it's heartwrenching. it was really heartwrenching. >> stacee is survived by her husband and two young children. another vigil will be held tonight at 7:00 p.m. in novato. las vegas residents and tourists try to get back to some degree of normal life. >> the reminders of what happened sunday are everywhere. and this morning jessica castro is giving us a sense of the mood there.

>> reporter: the mood is still somber in las vegas and no one has moved on, messages flash everywhere even showing a phone number for where victims can seek counseling, certainly not something you see on a las vegas billboard. >> we talk about how much we liked the #vegas strong. >> you don't mind seeing these marquees? >> it's a positive thing. >> reporter: tours stopped by to pay respects but told us they also want to continue to enjoy their vacations. make no mistake the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history is weighing heavily and permeating through every part of las vegas life. >> we're constantly reminded of it, but we're trying not to focus on the negative. >> reporter: even stars performing on the las vegas strip like celine dion had this to say. >> on sunday we lost too many beautiful, innocent souls. >> reporter: everywhere you can hear people talking about the

hour over curfew. just the latest in the fight over late night noise. reporter matt keller live for us at levi stadium with what comes next. matt? >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. check it out. the lights are still on here at levi stadium here at 5:00 a.m. a lot of workers are still breaking down from that late-night concert. the big news, the 10:00 curfew was broken. people were leaving here around 11:00 last night. fans were ready for the late night. coldplay didn't take the stage until right before 9:00. stadium management wasn't going to step up. the 49ers said public safety officials made it clear to them ending a concert like that could create a public safety emergency. santa clara police said they were fully stabbed and mindful people were thinking about the mass shooting at that concert on sunday. neighbors, though, were dealing with the loud music late into the night. >> it gets very loud, sometimes even when we close all the doors we still hear it in the home.

it's very difficult to sleep especially for the kids. >> reporter: the city of santa clara says it will fine the management $750 and $1,000 for a violation. the 49ers are concerned concerts may not come again unless this curfew issue is resolved. the vice mayor said these concerts, the big ones like beyonce, u2 bring in $800,000 for the city's general fund. reporting live in santa clara, matt keller, abc 7 news. let's talk about what's going on temperature wise outside. we'll start in the east bay, 49 the castro valley. fremont, union city, about 50. richmond is the warm spot. all right, on the other side of the bay san francisco mid-50s down the peninsula. 46 in pleasanton. 41 in novato. pacifica with fog out there.

minor waves on the bay today. it will become sunny this afternoon. a warmer afternoon if you're thinking of doing some exercising. if you're going to go to our beaches starting tomorrow through saturday all of our beaches will be dealing with strong rip currents and large breakers. you may want to stay back from the edge of the water. at least don't turn your back if you're going to get in the water because it could be dangerous at times. so 80s are our average high in the north bay. feels comfy this morning. chilly 44. look at that, 60 by 10:00. already to 73 degrees. nearly 30 degrees warmer by noon. and then we'll warm into the 80s during the afternoon hours. 6:00, 77, back down to 63 at 8:00. down in the south bay, average highs about 77. we'll go from 55 at 8:00 to nearly 77 at noon. low 80s for the better part of the afternoon hours. a nice evening. 76 at 6:00 to about 68 at 8:00. so we've got that heat wave coming. i'll give you an update next.

we do still have our traffic alert here on the peninsula. southbound 101 a full closure between whipple and wood side road and, yeah, we don't have much information. we know a patrol vehicle was involved in some type of a collision. we have an investigation so some police activity on the scene. for now you're forced off at whipple. you can get back on at wood side and a delay in the san carlos area as you approach that scene. good news at hillcrest, a semi also involved in the crash. they just cleared that so all lanes back open. we should start to see those thin out quickly. we have the same road work that we had yesterday on 680 but that was picked up way ahead of shedule today. state regulators answering this question, should drivers have to get fingerprint background checks? >> and a criminal like we've never seen. what this man does after he breaks in a restaurant. high school students launch a camera during a

it's 5:14. the latest high-profile incident on a plane. a woman forced off a flight because apparently she had a dog allergy and dogs were onboard. that was more than a week ago. that woman is finally talking about the incident. >> here is stephanie ramos. >> reporter: the woman in this now viral video speaking out about being violently dragged from a southwest flight last

tuesday. 46-year-old amelia says she is two months pregnant and was flying to los angeles to reach her elderly father who was about to have surgery. >> when i boarded the plane the first thing i asked the flight attendant, how many dogs will be on this plane? >> reporter: southwest allows passengers to choose their own seats at boarding and she found a seat far enough away from the animals because she's allergic, and that's when she says the maryland transportation police came on to escort her off the plane. she says she was subjected to racist and disparaging treatment by officers. southwest airlines says they were following their policy and we'll have more coming up at 7:00 a.m. with your "gma first look," abc news, washington. democratic leader nancy pelosi says her conservative peers have blocked an effort to address the gun violence issue. she says this week republicans

voted against creating a bipartisan collect committee. members would have been charged with coming up with legislation to tackle the issue like strengthening background checks within 60 days. pelosi says democrats will never stop fighting to protect american families. california senator dianne feinstein introduced a ban for bump stock. that enables semiautomatic weapons to fire as if they're automatic ones. they can be purchased online for less than $200. a billionaire has opened a gate blocking access to martin's beach in san mateo county but not permanently. he put up the gate blocking the only path to the popular beach. he was being threatened with huge fines if he didn't open it up. the deadline was yesterday and apparently the gate will now be open, only on certain days and certain hours. california beaches are public land by state law. it is not clear how the coastal commission will be responding to this. uber and lyft drivers have skirted fingerprint checks once again.

according to sfgate.com the public utilities commission declined to require biometric screenings saying they don't add a greater level of security above annual screenings. taxi drivers have to get their fingerprints checked and have long lobby for uber and lyft to have the same requirements. the checks are discriminatory because they're subject to continuous monitoring. a new study out of the university of utah says info-tainment is causing drivers to be distracted for dangerously long periods of time. some vehicles have as many as 50 buttons on the steering wheel and dashboard. the auto industry says the new systems are better than smart phones that weren't designed to be used while driving. san francisco-based cruise automation creates driving technology for autonomous cars. it is now telling state regulators six of its self-driving cars were involved in crashes last month. most of them in the city.

the company says none of its self-driving chevy bolts were actually responsible for the crashes, one involved a drunk bicyclist going the wrong way who hit a car, another was rear-ended by a driver on his phone. now we have what could be the best video of the total solar eclipse. students from a high school science program lawn achd balloon with a camera near the sierra national forest and it went 100,000 feet and captured this perspective. after a few minutes the balloon eventually popped and the camera parachuted back to earth but very nice. >> that is amazing. i assume this wasn't just like a mylar balloon you get at safeway. >> probably not. >> a bit more high tech. i want to take you back to our traffic alert. we do have more information for what's going on in the redwood city area. we have a full closure of southbound 101 before you get to wood side road and confirmation from redwood city chp this was a solo vehicle collision involving a patrol car with chp.

good morning. it is 5:29 on thursday, october 5. jessica castro is in las vegas on assignment. >> we are tracking weather and traffic. i want to start with alexis. you've been tracking this issue since 4:30 this morning. >> we have a sig alert on the peninsula. sky 7 just arriving to the scene here southbound 101 at wood side road. all traffic being forced off between whipple to wood side where you can get back on the freeway. we're not seeing any huge delays yet. i think we'll getter better idea once we can see how much after backup we have. it's less than a mile but you can see traffic flowing on the northbound side. southbound side there's flashing lights and no other traffic allowed. this started at 3:15 this morning. we are hearing from chp it was one of their patrol vehicles, a solo vehicle collision.

sunday. you can see people running for their lives at this concert. you can also -- you can hear the sound of gunfire and it sounds like a zone. we have video showing a man using his truck to transport victims. one key detail that the sheriff has just said yesterday in this investigation is how police don't think the shooter could have done this alone. >> it's troublesome this individual was able to move this amount of gear into a hotel room unassisted. >> reporter: president trump visited patients in their hospital beds yesterday. the doctor here says the president and the victims sometimes could be heard laughing. they kept it light. they were talking about music and family. the doctor says the visit really helped lift the mood here. reporting live in las vegas, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news.

>> amy, thank you. gun shop owner in texas says paddock came into his store last year with his girlfriend. he says paddock asked about modifying a gun to make it easier to pull the trigger. the firearms dealer says paddock didn't buy anything last year but he did sell handguns to paddock in 2010 and 2011. he says he never purchased any long guns that could have been used in the las vegas attack. joe manchin says he plans to meet with senator pat toomey of pennsylvania to talk about bipartisan background gun check legislation. the two have worked together in the past but manchin says he does not want to reintroduce the bill unless there is more widespread support. the legislation has previously been rejected two times by the senate. >> the gofundme account stands at just over $9 million this morning. the goal has been raised to $15 million. a plan to distribute the funds will be announced in a day or two. another vigil will be held for one of the victims of sunday's

mass shootings. >> stacee etcheber was with her husband, a san francisco police officer, at the concert. during the shooting vinnie etcheber ran to help victims and told stays ycee to run to safety tonight's vigil is scheduled to begin at 7:00. we know more about the life and final moments of shooting victim michelle vo. she lived in los angeles but grew up in san jose. an ohio man struck up a friendship. she and cody robertson were standing together near the stage when the first shots rang out. vo was hit. robertson was not so he put her into a truck to go to the hospital. robertson then went to help other people wounded. later he learned michelle didn't make it. her sister says robertson is a hero. >> to know that she had you in her last moments, she wasn't alone. you didn't leave her. it gives me a little bit of comfort.

>> michelle sent her sister a photograph of herself at the concert shortly before she was shot and killed. you can learn more about the victims of sunday night's shooting and the heroes who stepped up to help out by visiting our website abc7news.com. all tnew this morning, a bot fire. you can see the flames and smoke in this video. it broke out around 1:00 a.m. and it's not clear why yet. officials doused the flames with water. no word on any injuries. today is the deadline for daca residents to apply for permanent renewal. it gives undocumented immigrants brought to the u.s. as children protection from deportation. president trump is phasing that out. the renewals will expire in two years unless congress makes the program permanent. a group of conservative uc berkeley students wants the justice department to investigate what it claims is retaliation for free speech week. the berkeley patriot group says it was forced to cancel several events because they were targeted by campus police.

the group adds school leaders tried to blame supporters for messages against muslims, immigrants and gays. a school spokesperson says the allegations are unfounded. happening today san francisco city officials say they will reveal significant new changes to the city's recycling program. they say new updates will help to recycle even more while helping the city reduce waste and recover more material. not clear yet what the changes will be. officials add they will make recycling and composting program the most comprehensive in the country. a press conference will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the war memorial court across from city hall. crews will be taking advantage of our fall weather to clear coyote creek before our winter storms hit. heavy vegetation with lead to flooding. crews worked to cut it down. the water district has rebuilt a levee that helps to protect several mobile home parks. that area flooded last february. >> also have other challenges with the homeless being here.

there's a lot of trash from their encampments. so there's a lot of physical hazards that crews have to look out for in addition to the steep slopes. >> volunteers have been helping. in fact, they've cleared 5 1/4 tons of debris from the east william street area and rock spring neighborhoods. the army corps of engineers working on a feasibility study for improvements to coyote creek. i want to take you back live to sky 7 in redwood city. this is where we have a full closure of southbound 101 between whipple and wood side. you can see the flares up here and you can see all traffic being forced off onto the exit. it's not a very long detour. you can get back on at wood side. and the backups continue to grow here. it's not terrible yet. we are still looking at volumes less than a mile approaching the backup. even in the last 10 or 15 minutes you can see it has gotten longer.

what is that smell? some neighbors in the east bay say a disgusting problem is making their homes unlivable in castro valley. it's a stench coming from the east bay regional parks district. residents snapped these pictures pictures. pictures. >> once they were done the odor would actually linger for an hour in our homes and we would smell like a port-a-potty. >> actually no odors in the area. >> there's a long-standing contract with castro valley sanitary district for the sewage disposal. neighbors say the dump location was farther up the hill. residents are considering legal action to stop the sewage

rico have electricity. 12% have cell service. >> at texas a&m university later this month an event called deep in the heart. it's part of an effort launched by former presidents last month. the proceeds from the october 21st event will go to texas, florida and the caribbean. three daughters of an east bay man killed in a terrorist attack have filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit against google, facebook and twitter. jerrod tucker died when a van plowed through a sidewalk crowd. it says the tech giants provided support to isis who abused the networks for spreading extremist propaganda. the companies say they're taking steps to crack down on terrorists using their sites. wells fargo says it will refund fees improperly charged to mortgage customers. borrowers normally have a time limit to submit paperwork. if they miss it they face a higher interest rate.

you can see that in the san carlos area so that should be gone the next time we look at that. we do have some dense fog this morning. a dense fog advisory issued by chp about midnight. slow down and take it easy. more reaction time. let's check in with mike nicco now with a look at the rest of our forecast. the winds that are fairly calm on live doppler 7. you can see the winds that are blowing are blowing offshore and that will help intensify our warming trend today. a look at sfo where it's clear and about 50 degrees right now. shouldn't have any flight arrival delays. hazy sunshine because of the lack of winds and the warming trend begins. now cooler week at the coast. we started to see the trend yesterday. it became more apparent as we got deeper into some of our computer model forecasts yesterday and through this morning. the highs at the coast will republic next week while most of us aren't going to cool down as much as the coast.

i'll show it to you in the seven-day forecast. down in the south bay we have upper 70s. 78 to 7, santa cruz, sunnyvale. 80 to 86 degrees elsewhere. check out the temperatures on the peninsula today. 74 to 79. half moon bay is the warm spot. 69 followed by 68 in sunset. 73 in downtown, south san francisco. 82 to 84 through the north bay valleys. along the east bay shore about 77 to 80 degrees. not much of a change there. and even the spauler change inland 83 to 86 degrees. tonight our valleys in the 40s in the north bay and east bay. half moon bay about 49. here is what i'm talking about our temperatures. we're going to hit the ninlts inland tomorrow, stay there saturday. upper 80s sunday. we'll be in the 80s tomorrow around the bay and saturday upper 70s sunday. look at the coast dropping 76 tomorrow to 66 saturday. that's that local sea breeze. back to you. >> mike, thank you. new at 6:00, the reason you may experience more turbulence in the air over the next few years.
