authorities want to determine if the gunman may have had help in the massacre. >> the girlfriend told authorities she had no idea he was planning the attack. lana zak live with what we know this morning. lana? >> reporter: good morning to you, reggie and natasha. he did do a lot of planning. in addition to the suite he had here at the mandalay bay hotel he had also reserved several other rooms at hotels all along the strip. all of them overlooking the concert venue. you can see the heroism of ordinary americans in the worst of circumstances. victims of the las vegas shooting being led into a vehicle before it sped off to the hospital. one of those victims was out celebrating her 28th birthday with her sister athena. >> i knew i couldn't give up on her. she deserved a chance.

i mean, she was literally dying in my arms. >> reporter: in trying to piece together his motive. authorities have been questioning the shooter's girlfriend, marilou danley. danley says when stephen paddock sent her to the philippines and wired her money she believed he was breaking up with her. authorities believe paddock had planned to escape and they question if he really acted alone. >> it's troublesome this individual was able to move this amount of gear into a hotel room. unassisted. >> reporter: we've also learned the name of the security guard at the mandalay bay hotel who is being called a hero. he was the first to encounter the shooter. his name jesus campos. he still persisted in leading police successfully to the shooter's location. reporting live from las vegas, lana zak, abc 7 news. >> thank goodness he did. seems like a very humble man. the las vegas sheriff release

this had time line of sunday night's shooting saying the first shots were fired at 10:05 p.m. at 10:12 the first officers arrived on the 31st floor and then they reported gunfire was coming directly from the floor above them. at 10:15 the suspect fired his last shots. two minutes later officers arrived on the 32nd floor. they moved systematically clearing every room before at 11:20 they breached his room. this morning we're hearing for the first time from the parents of stacee etcheber, one of the victims from the bay area. >> these family photos provided by her parents. etcheber and her husband vinnie, a san francisco police officer, were at the concert. during the shooting the couple got separated when vinnie went to help the victims. following the shooting vinnie couldn't find her. her family checked all the hospitals before vinnie reluctantly went to the morgue. >> put her pen down and said i'll be right back. she knew. she knew.

she went back. she came back with a picture of stac stacee, and it was just heartwrenching. it was really heartwrenching. >> stacee is survived by her husband and two young children. another vigil will be held tonight at 7:00 p.m. in novato. this morning in las vegas residents and tourists are trying to get back to some degree of normalcy. >> jessica castro has been in las vegas all week, and she reports on what the mood is like now. >> reporter: the mood is still somber in las vegas, and no one has quite moved on. messages flash everywhere, even showing a phone number for where victims can seek counseling, certainly not something you usually see on a las vegas billboard. >> we talked about how much we liked the #vegas strong. it was great. >> reporter: you don't mind seeing the marquee? >> not at all. >> reporter: make no mistake the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history is weighing heavil and

sell handguns in 2010 and 2011. never purchased any long guns that could have been used in the vegas attack. a west virginia democratic senator joe manchin says he plans to meet with senator pat toomey of pennsylvania to talk about bipartisan gun background check legislation. the two senators have worked together in the past but manchin says he does not want to reintroduce the bill unless there's more widespread gop support. the legislation has previously been rejected twice by the senate. new this morning from the live desk check out the brand-new cover of "time" magazine just tweeted in the last hour. in big, bold, white letters over a black background the name of several cities that have seen mass shootings are listed and it ends with las vegas. the cover story asks will the las vegas shooting change the debate over guns. we know more about the life and final moment of michelle vo. she grew up in san jose.

she went to the festival sunday night by herself but quickly struck a conversation with this man from ohio. they became fast friends. she and cody robertson were standing together near the stage when the first shots rang out. vo got hit. robertson and others put her in a truck to go to the hospital. robertson then parted ways with her as he was rescuing other people. later after going to many hospitals and getting in contact with michelle's family he learned she did not make it. her sister described robertson as a hero. >> to know she had you in her last moments, she wasn't alone. you didn't leave her, gives me a little bit of comfort. >> the lengths this man went to in order to keep her family informed is really incredible. michelle sent her cyst aerophotograph of herself shortly before she was shot and

we could have muni delays. metering lights have been on since 5:21 this morning and typical delays through the maze and into san francisco. no major trouble spots. uber and lyft drivers have managed to skirt fingerprint checks again. the california public utilities commission declined to require biometric screening saying they don't add a greater level of security above those already in place. taxi drivers have to get fingerprint checks and they've long lobbied for uber and lyft drivers to have the same requirements. they say the checks are discriminatory because they're subject to continuous status monitoring. san francisco-based cruz automation for autonomous cars is now telling state regulators that six of its self-driving cars were involved in crashes last night most in the city. they say none of the chevy bolts was responsible for the crashes.
