saturday, october 7th. i'm chris nguyen. here's meteorologist lisa argen, tracking live doppler 7 for us. >> hey, chris. right now it is clear, the winds are calm, and we're looking at another day with numbers above average but not as warm as it was. beach hazard statement, if you're thinking of heading to the coast, current wave heights five to seven feet. we have the risk of strong rip currents and sneaker waves. 54 in concord. low 40s in santa rosa. half moon bay is in the lower 40s as well with pacifica in the 50s. looking at the winds kicking up tomorrow. by about 11:00 in the morning, winds gusty in the upper elevations. that's why we have a wind advisory from 7:00 tomorrow night through the evening hours. high fire danger really all throughout the year, and certainly in october. but from a 11:00 tomorrow morning through tuesday. so looking at 40s and 50s this

morning. 70s and 80s around the bay. inland, we're down as much as about eight degrees to ten degrees today in san francisco. the sea breeze kicks in sooner, and we'll see near 70 at the coast. chris? >> lisa, thank you. this morning, families and friends of the bay area victims of the mass shooting in las vegas are trying to start the healing process. ♪ i once was lost there weren't many dry eyes last night as "amazing grace" was sung at a vigil in san jose in memory of michelle vo, one of 58 people killed when hundreds of bullets were fired at unsuspecting concertgoers six days ago. as the investigation continues, authorities still don't know what drove stephen paddock to do it. abc news reporter brian clark has our story. >> reporter: investigators are baffled.

>> we have run down more than a thousand leads in this investigation. while some of it has helped create a better profile into the madness of the suspect, we do not still have a clear motive or reason why. >> reporter: why 64-year-old stephen paddock would hole up on the 32 floor of the mandalay bay hotel, break the window, and fire down on to people below enjoying a country music start. even the note he left behind. >> 100% it was not a suicide note. it was a piece of paper with a number on it. >> reporter: offering up few clues. officers have found that paddock, a reclusive, high stakes gambler planned his attack meticulously, stockpiling guns, a dozen of them modified to fire like an all weapon, setting up cameras inside and outside his room. fbi agents and police still closely watching paddock's girlfriend marilou danley. officials say they're skeptical of danley's claims that she knew nothing of the killer's plans. in las vegas, every day since

the shooting, vigils, tributes, and memorials. >> this just shows everybody the severity of what happened here as you look down at this row of crosses. >> reporter: brian clark, abc news, new york. friends and could workers cheered floor police officer as he returned home from southern california after being shot in the head on sunday. ontario police officer michael garcia walked off a private plane under his own power yesterday. his fiance summer shielded him after he was shot. she also survived being hurt. gracia will now go to a rehabilitation facility. he's expected to make a full recovery. vice president mike pence will travel to las vegas today. in his weekly radio address, president trump will be in north carolina for a fundraiser to

talk about the massacre in nevada. the president visited las vegas on wednesday and met with first responders and survivors. in his address mr. trump spoke about how the goodness of the human spirit broke through in a matter of seconds after the shooting began. this week the president says our nation remembers the people whom we have lost. >> we can never fill the void of those who perished. but we pledge to honor them by living as they would have wished with lives full of purpose, with hearts full of love, and with hope for a better tomorrow. >> president trump added that americans defied death and hate red with love and courage. a look now at next week's "new yorker" cover. the artwork shows bullets, 58 total, each bearing the name of one of the 58 people killed in las vegas. you can learn more about each of the 58 victims on our website, abc7news.com. a family escaped injury last night after someone fired at their car on westbound 24 and

oakland west of 51st street. the chp tells us the incident happened at 7:40. that's when a vehicle described as a gray sedan pulled alongside and fired one shot, hitting the family's white dodge avenger. no one in the car was hurt. chp o investigate that shooting. the california highway patrol is also investigating reports of shots fired on the bay bridge. witnesses report a gray car fired several rounds at a black suv at around 7:00 last night. the chp is looking for the drivers of both vehicles. traffic was never impacted and there are no reported victims. the u.s. navy helped save a life at san francisco's pier 30 last night. sailors rescued a man from the bay near the "uss essex" just after 8:00 last night. san francisco firefighters also raced to the scene. paramedics took the man to the hospital. it appears he suffered non-life-threatening injuries. san francisco is hopping this weekend. you can see behind me the blue angels, part of fleet week

alcohol is not sold but there's plenty of food. >> people ask me where do you get tickets? i say, you don't need tickets, just walk through the trees and you'll find the concert. >> because of the las vegas shooting, security is tighter at this event. organizers say safety of attendees is their top priority. an oakland woman is recovering this morning after what she calls a road rage crash. 24-year-old maddison holland has several broken bones and a spinal injury. she says it started when a man in a maroon truck cut her off in a tunnel. the driver chased her for seven miles on highway 24 until he forced her off the road. >> he was just like relentless. really scary. it was so scary. he just thought it was some joke, like it was so funny to be harassing someone. >> holland's car landed upside down on second street in lafayette. neighbors dragged her out.

chp officers are trying to find that driver. federal officials say i.c.e. agents will target undocumented immigrants at home and at work after governor brown signed a bill making california a sanctuary state. the law limits how much local and state law enforcement can cooperate with i.c.e. i.c.e. says it prefers to document undocumented immigrants being released from jail or prison. agents claim that undocumented immigrants will face a higher risk of being detained and deported once that new law takes effect in january. former secretary of state hillary clinton spent yesterday here in the bay area. her last stop was at stanford where she talked to students about digital technology and the ongoing effects of russia's election hack. abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo has the story. [ applause ] >> reporter: a standing ovation for hillary clinton as she took the stage in front of about 500 people at stanford.

in washington, d.c., you're looking at a triumphant return to the baseball diamond. house majority whip steve scalise threw out the ceremonial first pitch to capitol police officer david bailey. both men were wounded and a gunman opened fire on house republicans practicing for a congressional baseball game in june. two rivals on the gridiron united to prevent teen suicide last night at a high school in san mateo.

the teams wore special socks which feature the logo of an organization called play for prevention. quarterback steve batari founded the nonprofit after his former girlfriend took her own life last spring. something you would never expected around here. a petaluma couple finds an alligator in their backyard. >> reporter: petaluma's animal control officer took the strangest of calls. > i wasn't going to tell him there's an alligator in the backyard. who would believe that? >> reporter: karen davis brown spotted this four-foot alligator thursday night. >> he was just sitting there with his mouth kind of open. and he looked real. but it was just too weird. >> he closed his mouth and backed up. i went right back in the house and said, call 911. >> reporter: quite a few cops showed up, all wondering if we were crazy people. >> reporter: officer mark scott caught the gator with his net. >> this was my first. five years, my first one.

>> reporter: after entangling its mouth, scott duct taped his mouth shut. >> i thought it would be slower. but they're pretty fast. >> reporter: and perhaps hungry. the browns have a koi pond in their backyard. you can see they have about a half dozen fish. and no joke, a concrete alligator has been in there as well for about 15 years. the animal shelter named it darth gator. a woman with reptile rescue came forward. >> you have to get a permit from fish and game. she has one. >> we lived in florida for a year. never had an alligator in the backyard. but petaluma, we have an alligator in our backyard. >> reporter: in california's gator country. katie utehs, abc 7 news. good news now for grab lovers. it appears the

hurricane nate will be impacting louisiana today and much of the central gulf. right now it is at 85 miles an hour as a category 1 continues to track quickly to the northwest at 22 miles an hour. so hurricane-force winds from about 40 miles from the center. it's going to push into new orleans, take a right hand turn and weaken as it goes up much of the mid-atlantic coast. now, as it pushes into the gulf coast today, we're expecting the storm surge of anywhere from four to six feet and rainfall will accumulate as well, three to six inches, perhaps ten inches in some spots. this is the forecast for today throughout 11:00 tonight. so you notice that it is not quite at the gulf yet but they're looking at some impacts already with the gusty winds, the rain, the storm surge, and then much of the mid-atlantic seaboard here. if you're catching a flight, you may want to be advised that there probably be some delays along the eastern seaboard. at home we're looking at the beginning of a beautiful day here. santa cruz, where temperatures will be warm to mild around much of the bay.

looking at 46 right now in gilroy, 41 in half moon bay. 52 in oakland. 54 in mountain view from the golden gate bridge. lots of sunshine if you're planning your day at the coast with numbers right around 70 degrees. that sea breeze will be with us. then tomorrow, even though it gets cooler, offshore winds kick up even further. 54 in concord, 52 in the high fire danger throughout the weekend, by 11:00 tomorrow in the upper elevations we're looking at north and east bay hills, santa cruz mountains with a red flag warning. mild to warm through monday. a cooler pattern as we get into later in the week. so in and around the golden gate park, you'll look for numbers in the upper 60s. today, a lot cooler than yesterday. it will be mild, numbers a little bit cooler, that sea breeze today. if you're heading into the city for fleet week, it will be very nice with numbers in the mid-70s.

apple is investigating a potential battery problem with its latest iphone 8. there have been several reports this past week about the new phones splitting open. it appears the battery inside the phone expands, bending the front of the phone and pulling it apart. the company has issued a short statement saying "we are aware and looking into it." a comedy gag on an animated tv show is prompting mcdonald's to bring back its sichuan dipping sauce with chicken nuggets for one day only today at select locations. the move comes in response to renewed interest in the sauce after a character in the series, "rick and morty," tries to track it down. it will be available in berkeley, concord, san francisco and san jose. still to come on "abc 7 mornings," governor brown decides whe

the coast or inland valleys. 46 in gilroy with 52 in oakland, 59 san francisco. 54 in mountain view. the north wind at six miles per hour, low to mid-50s in our inland valleys. beach hazard statement through tonight with northwesterly and southwest swells bringing strong rip currents and sneaker waves. by tomorrow the winds are kicking up in a red flag warning from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 on tuesday. northeast winds gusting anywhere from 30 to 55 miles per hour. the winds will be kicking up as well, obviously, all around the north bay and east bay. so keep that in mind throughout the afternoon today, another warm one, cooler than yesterday. upper 80s inland, 70s at the coast. >> lisa, thank you. developing news out of virginia where two children have been injured in a ferris wheel accident. this is cellphone video from the scene. it shows a brief glimpse of a

child being worked on by paramedics, then being slid onto a stretcher. witnesses say a car on the ferris wheel tipped over, tossing the kids inside onto the ground. they add one of the kids opened up the car door while it was still moving, causing the car to catch onto a support and then turn over. developing news now in new orleans. the city is in the crosshairs of hurricane nate. heavy rain and a dangerous storm surge could affect the pumping system in the city. abc news reporter steve osonsami has the details. >> reporter: this is a state of emergency and they're race to go get ready for this storm. >> we're going to flood. that's why i'm here. otherwise i be still at the office right now. >> reporter: in new orleans, they're especially worried. a dozen of the city's drainage pumps aren't working.

they're out clearing drains. in parts of orleans, st. bernard and jefferson parishes, more than a thousand families are being forced to leave their homes. >> one of the threats to this storm is not necessarily interior rain but storm surge. >> reporter: billy ross has moved everything off the ground. >> you don't know what the surgery is going to do. if you don't pick it up, you lose it. this is like a gamble. >> reporter: three feet of storm surge and he's fine. six feet and he's losing everything. he's expecting five. >> you can only do so much. >> reporter: the storm has already killed at least 11 dead in nicaragua, eight in costa rica. dozens are missing in washed away homes. happening today, another plane load of disaster pets will be arriving, this time from louisiana. here are a few examples of the pets coming to town. the animal shelters in louisiana are bursting after taking in pets left behind in hurricanes harvey and irma. these pictures were taken by the petaluma animal shelter where 30 of the 80 dogs and cats will go.

the rest will go to no-kill shelters. vice president mike pence and his wife karen visited puerto rico and the u.s. virgin islands yesterday to assess the damage from hurricane maria. the vice president toured the area by helicopter and met with u.s. forces on the ground. later he visited a church in san juan, telling victims that the trump administration will be there every step of the way. >> as president trump said, we will get through this, and we will get through this together, for everyone in puerto rico. >> the trip comes just days after president trump visited the island and praised relief efforts, without mentioning the criticism that the federal response has drawn. the fcc has given google's parent company alphabet permission to send up balloons to provide emergency cellphone service to puerto rico. thousands of cellphone towers were knocked out in the hurricane. engineers hope to use its

project loon balloons to provide voice and data services to the island's residents. president trump delivered a foreboding message in a room full of military leaders. he said, quote, we are witnessing the calm before the storm. abc's senior white house correspondent cecilia vega was in the oval office and asked the president to explain. >> reporter: in the white house state dining room, this is the image president trump summoned reporters to see. the president smiling, surrounded by his top military leaders and their spouses. then came the unsolicited, cryptic comment. >> do you know what this represents? the calm before the storm. >> reporter: what's the storm? >> could be, the calm, the calm before the storm. >> reporter: what storm, mr. president? >> we have have the world's great military people in this room. i will tell you that. we're going to have a great evening. thank you all for coming. >> reporter: what storm, mr.

president? >> you'll find out. >> reporter: the oval office, we tried again. mr. president, what did you mean by calm before the storm yesterday? what did you mean by that? >> thank you very much. >> reporter: after a wink and a pause. >> you'll find out. >> reporter: the comment especially ominous as the united states is engaged in a war of words with north korea and the president is on the verge of decertifying the nuclear deal with iran. or maybe this was just trump being trump. >> we're never going to say in advance what the president is going to do. >> reporter: how seriously should the american public or american adversaries, for that matter, take these comments? is it a joke? is he serious? >> i think you can take the president protecting the american people always extremely serious. and if he feels action is necessary, he'll take it. >> reporter: cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. new details. governor brown is receiving criticism for vetoing a bill

that would have banned smoking on beaches and deserted parks. supporters of the bill said many forest fires are sparked by 6. some tech companies are taking job recruiting to a new level. they're inviting students as young as the age of 13 to consider careers in manufacturing. abc 7 news reporter david louie says a worker shortage is behind the initiative, called national manufacturing day. >> reporter: this is one of san jose's 1500 manufacturing companies. it opened its doors to students to show them how 3d printing and robotics are ushering in a new generation of factories, shifting manufacturing from overseas back to silicon valley. >> companies like amazon have set our expectations that we can

get things right away. and i think as we look at the future of manufacturing, producing where a customer is saves you time and saves you money and it affords really good, high paying jobs. >> reporter: but there's a shortage in workers, in part because of baby boomers reaching retirement age and insufficient replacements. the hope is that these students will see manufacturing as an attractive career. some jobs require a college degree while others don't. >> you have everything from the service technician who is learning a lot of the skills on the job all the way to a well-educated engineer who is helping iterate the next prototype or to design the manufacturing work flow. >> reporter: students received a cram course on manufacturing and recognize its importance. >> for engineering, there is like one major process that everyone uses but there's multiple ways to determine it. so multiple people see the same thing in different eyes. >> the process of manufacturing, that's what i thought was really cool. it's like a whole assembly line. it's a whole system. >> reporter: some of these students are still eight years away from graduating college.

a neighborhood near the oakland coliseum is about to undergo a major transformation. the city broke ground yesterday on coliseum connections, a mixed income development in the shadow of the coliseum b.a.r.t. station. the transit-friendly station was 17 years in the making. oakland mayor libby shaff believes it's a sign of good things to come. >> this is a phenomenal neighborhood. east oakland is revitalizing. what better place to live than right next to a b.a.r.t. station? >> roughly half the homes will be designated as affordable housing. the city expects it to be ready for occupancy by the end of next year. meteorologist lisa argen is here tracking our bay area forecast. >> that's right, sunrise about
