what drove stephen paddock to do it. abc news reporter kenneth moem has the latest. >> reporter: the hunt for clues is growing frustrating in las vegas. >> we thought we might find some political or social reason, some medical reason. we haven't found it yet. >> reporter: investigators are asking for more tips about mass murderer stephen paddock. is it possible the motive is he did it because he could? >> that's certainly a possibility. it's one of those possibilities you really can't wrap your mind around. i don't know if i can accept that. >> reporter: new details are emerging. sources say paddock kept a low profile to avoid suspicion from hotel authority. he pretended he was speaking with others in the room checking their orders so hotel staff wouldn't think he was alone in the large suite. his final days included a prostitute and a gambling spree.

police confirm they found a recent prescription for valium and a note with a series of cryptic numbers. >> run! kep yo keep your head down! >> reporter: nearly a week since paddock opened fire on a music festival. new video and incredible stories of survival. people rushed to help 48-year-old doug kotter, separated from his wife and son. >> it's just amazing that there was somebody there to help my dad. i was worried, i thought he was out on the street somewhere. i had no idea. >> reporter: police are crediting mandalay bay security guard jesus campos for alerting officers. paddock shot campos while he was responding to a door alarm. >> he rose to the occasion and acted like an absolute hero. >> reporter: abc news, las vegas.

friends and co-workers cheered for a police officer as he returned home from southern california after being shot in the head on sunday. ontario police officer michael gracia walked off a private plane under his own power yesterday. his fiance summer shielded him after he was shot. she also survived being hurt. gracia will now go to a rehabilitation facility. he's expected to make a full recovery. vice president mike pence will travel to las vegas today. in his weekly address, president trump will be in north carolina for a fundraiser. he talked about the massacre in nevada. the president visited las vegas on wednesday and met with first responders and survives. in his address, mr. trump spoke about how the goodness of the human spirit broke through in a matter of seconds after the shooting began. this week the president says our nation remembers the people whom we have lost. >> we can never fill the void of those who perished but we pledge to honor them by living as they

would have wished with lives full of purpose, with hearts full of love, and with hope for a better tomorrow. >> president trump added that americans defied death and hatred with love and courage. a look now at next week's "new yorker" cover. the artwork shows bullets, 58 total, each bearing the name of one of the people killed in las vegas. you can learn more about each of the 58 victims on our website, abc7news.com. time now, 8:05. a family escaped injury last night after someone fired at their car on westbound 24 and oakland west of 51st street. the chp tells us the incident happened at around 7:40. that's when a vehicle described as a gray sedan pulled up and fired one shot, hitting the family's white dodge avenger. no one in the vehicle was hurt. chp officials will continue to investigate the shooting. the california highway patrol is also investigating reports of shots fired on the

bay bridge. witnesses report a gray car fired several rounds at a black suv at around 7:00 last night. the chp is looking for the drivers of both vehicles. traffic was never impacted, and there are no reported victims. the u.s. navy helped save a life at san francisco's pier 30 last night. sailors rescued a man from the bay near the "uss essex" just after 8:00 last night. san francisco firefighters also raced to the scene. the man was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. san francisco is hopping this weekend. you can see behind me the blue angels, part of fleet week, that's bringing hundreds of thousands of people to the city. abc 7 news reporter lonni rivera has more. >> reporter: the u.s. navy blue angels had all eyes focused on the skies over san francisco for friday's amazing air show. >> i always like the noise. >> reporter: really? >> a little on edge. but it's fun. >> reporter: the six planes glided through the air, performing cool moves, even sending a heartfelt message.

make more of what's yours. welcome back, everyone. an oakland woman is recovering from what she calls a road rage crash. 24-year-old maddison holland has several broken bones and a spinal injury. she says it started when a man in a maroon truck cut her off in a tunnel. the driver chased her for seven miles on highway 24 until he forced her off the road. >> he was just like relentless. really scary. it was so scary. he just thought it was some joke, like it was so funny to be harassing someone. >> holland's car landed upside down on second street in lafayette. neighbors dragged her out. chp officers are trying to find that driver. federal officials an i.c.e.

agents will target undocumented immigrants at home and at work. the sanctuary state law in california limits how much local and state law enforcement can cooperate with i.c.e. i.c.e. says it prefers to target undocumented immigrants released from jail or prison. agents claim they face a higher risk of being detained or deported once the new law takes effect in january. the board of directors of the weinstein company has pointed appointed a legal team to review the sexual harassment allegations against harvey weinstein. three of the nine board members have resigned according to "the new york times." four of the remaining director are backing the legal review, saying they take the allegations against him extremely seriously. they issued say statement saying he's taking an indefinite leave of absence. in washington, d.c., you're looking at a triumphant return to the baseball diamond. house majority whip steve scalise threw out the ceremonial first pitch to capitol police officer david bailey.

before last night's national league playoff game. both men were wounded and a gunman opened fire on house republicans practicing for a congressional baseball game in june. two rivals on the gridiron united to prevent teen suicide last night. abc 7 news was on the sideline for homecoming at a high school in san mateo. the padres and their guests the archbishop mini monarchs from san jose wore special socks featuring the logo of play for prevention. quarterback luke batari started the nonprofit after his former girlfriend took her own life last spring. here's something you would never expect around here. a couple in petaluma finds a four-foot-long alligator in their backyard. abc 7 reporter katie utehs has the pictures to prove the tale. >> reporter: petaluma's animal control officer took the strangest of calls.

>> she said, come here right now. >> i wasn't going to tell him there's an alligator in the backyard. who would believe that? >> reporter: karen davis brown spotted this four-foot alligator thursday night. >> he was just sitting there with his mouth kind of open. and he looked real. but it was just too weird. >> he closed his mouth and backed up. i went right back in the house and said, call 911. >> reporter: quite a few cops showed up, all wondering if we were crazy people. >> reporter: officer mark scott caught the gator with his net. >> this was my first. five years, my first one. >> reporter: after entangling its mouth, scott duct taped his mouth shut. and put a towel over the animal's eyes to calm it. >> i thought it would be slower. but they're pretty fast. >> reporter: and perhaps hungry. the browns have a koi pond in their backyard. you can see they have about a half dozen fish. and no joke, a concrete alligator has been in there as well for about 15 years. the animal shelter named it darth gator. a woman with reptile rescue came forward.

you'll notice the colors. it is a strong system as it moves into the gulf coast near lake pontchartrain. they're expecting a storm surge of four to six feet. this is moving at the north-northwest, 26 miles an hour. you can see right here, it's a category 2, and looking at some heavy rain as well. this is all very low-lying area here. we're very concerned about it. it continues to weaken as it takes a right hand turn late tomorrow. but the impacts will be felt in the mid-atlantic from some very heavy rain and perhaps you're flying to anywhere along the eastern seaboard. you will notice some delays here with your flights. and even by tuesday, we're looking at new york city, looking at some rain from this system. a live look outside. this is mt. tam. you can see a little bit of haze. we had some fog. it's going to be a gorgeous day. how about cooler than yesterday? 58 in the city, 57 mountain view and san jose. 46 as half moon bay. it's been a chilly start. hopefully you're getting used to that, 'tis the season, right,

francis drake is closed until further notice. the westbound lane remains open. the driver has been identified as a honduras native who was living in the bay area. marin chp tells us that witnesses saw the driver drift to the side of the road a few times before he crashed. in other news this morning, information about pal opalo weighted student average was posted on a rogue website. the school worked with the web hosting provider to take it down. some of the information on the website was legitimate and it affects students in grades 10 through 12. the district says it's investigating the breach. >> a comedy gag on an animated tv show is prompting mcdonald's to bring back its sichuan dipping sauce with chicken nuggets for one day only today at select locations. the move comes in response to renewed interest in the sauce after a character in the series

good morning south bay. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." good morning, everyone, thanks so much for joining us. i'm chris nguyen. we're starting this half hour with a quick look at the weather. meteorologist lisa argen is tracking conditions where you live. >> hey, chris, it's gorgeous out there. it will be cooler today, in the mid-70s downtown, upper 60s at the bluegrass festival, where it's 59 right now. about 46 in half moon bay. right here on east bay hills, upper elevations, those winds will be howling tomorrow. 46 santa rosa. 50 by the delta, 54 in concord. so how much cooler? you'll feel the effects along the coast and the city and also a beach hazard statement. so six to seven foot current wave heights right now but sneaker waves. strong rip currents from sonoma to the central coast. as we get into the high fire danger, it's above a thousand feet where the winds will really be blowing, 35 to 55 miles per hour. with that, a wind advisory from

ground. they add one of the kids opened up the car door while it was still moving, causing the car to catch onto a support and then turn over. to developing news, the south is bracing itself for yet another hurricane. hurricane nate is bearing down on louisiana. right now it's in the central gulf of mexico, bringing heavy rain to low lying countries. abc news reporter steve osunsami has the details. >> reporter: this deadly storm would not let up in central america, washing away homes and roads. two dozen people across this region have lost their in anythinicaragua, stranded fa used ropes to get out of the floodwaters. moving water opened up this giant sinkhole. the storm has strengthened into a category 1 hurricane, speeding towards cities on the american gulf coast. this is now a state of emergency from louisiana to georgia. thousands of families are under

into the city. and we are warm. in fact, right now temperatures in the city are comfortable, in the 50s. we're going to cool down here. how about our inland east bay, upper 80s yesterday, 90 at the concord airport. we'll be almost as warm today. looking at numbers in fact in the upper 80s, well above average. five to ten degrees above average today. the changes come really not until next week. so looking at upper 80s today, a bit more cooling tomorrow in the low 80s. temperatures come back up come monday and tuesday. and then the cooldown you can expect to be more widespread with highs well below average by the middle to the end of next week. it's pretty out there, temperatures are comfortable right now with readings still on the cool side. but it will be a beautiful day over most of the bay area. pretty toasty inland. and also around much of the bay, where is the sea breeze is going to be confined right to the shoreline. live doppler 7 starting out nice

and clear. here's the golden gate bridge where numbers will top out in the 70s at our local beaches. you can see the flag here pretty flat. not only is the wind out of the north, but as it picks up tomorrow, we get into our red flag warning, high fire danger, and temperatures will be warm, relative humidity low. right now, a spike in the temperature downtown, 60 degrees. looking at 50 on the coast. we were at 39 from this morning. 48 in santa rosa, 51 in livermore. your forecast highlights, looking at tons of sun with a mild to warm pattern through monday. all warm days. then we're looking at the fire danger increasing above 1,000 feet. we have gusty winds headed our way. and that will take us right on through tuesday. but a fall feeling in the air by later in the workweek. so it's all coming into play today as numbers will be very comfortable along the peninsula. we're in the 80s yesterday, kind of toasty with low to mid-80s

week. breakig news out of san jose, police announced the arrest of a schoolteacher for sexual abuse of a child. 34-year-old samuel naif, the assistant band director at branham high school, was booked yesterday on four charges including lewd acts with a minor. police say the investigation revealed he and the victim had a three-year relationship that began when she was just 13 and that he threatened to post nude pictures of the victim. we'll have more on this story throughout the day on abc7news.com. tesla has big plans to expand in fremont. the company is renovating two office buildings on dumbarton circle that can accommodate more than a thousand workers. but the move will actually impact both fremont and newark. >> reporter: it's another bay area city undergoing a rapid transformation. >> i've seen a lot of buildings, a lot of construction, a lot of new homes. it gets me worried. >> reporter: and in fremont, martha martinez worries about

her family being pushed out of their home. >> the rent is going to go up higher. a year ago we moved out because our rent increased $500 in a month. >> reporter: call it a sign of the times, perhaps the new normal, as companies such as tesla make plans to relocate or set up in the city. >> we are part of silicon valley. we're part of the region now. we're no longer the little city outside. >> reporter: not far from the dumbarton bridge, change is coming to this part of dumbarton circle. renovations have begun on these two buildings that will eventually house tesla as the company makes plans to build beyond its current factory in fremont and its headquarters in palo alto. according to our media partner, the bay area newsgroup, with nearly 230,000 square feet, the space can accommodate up to 1,000 workers based on alameda county's typical zoning and planning regulations. no word yet how long the construction will take, but many business owners in fremont as well as the neighboring town of newark say it's good for the local economy. >> it will be more excitement, and then there will be more
