lillian. >> dan and kristen, we're at the intersection of highway 12 and the cooler temperatures have made a difference. the flames have died down along the ridge of hamill family lines but up highway 12 and north of it we saw a lot of flames that caused a lot of devastation. 5,000 acres have burned so far. we saw vineyards gone, homes destroyed and power poles and trees down. the surrounding area were especially hard hit. about half the homes appear to have been destroyed by flames. we spoke to one of the lucky ones whose home still is in tact. >> the house is okay and we're being -- putting outthe smoldering and see what we can do. >> reporter: you just came back? >> we evacuated last night around 11:00. >> reporter: so were you

surprised to see your house still standing? >> very surprised. the neighbors called and said our house was still standing. so i said let's go. we had livestock here, so we came to get our livestock. >> reporter: how are they? >> burned some. but little pigmy goats. everyone around us is gone. next to us over here is still here. so the couple over here and the fire department came win bulldozers and they did save it basically by bulldozing all the land. >> what do you make of that? >> it's great. thank god for cdf. >> reporter: back here live at highway 12, the police have set up a barricade here because of everything going on in glen ellen. there are too many hazards on and along highway 12. that's the latest near glen ellen. abc 7 news. >> well, fires keep burning in a hard hit part of santa rosa

where flames destroyed a number of businesses and hospitals are dealing with not just people but patients that had to be rushed from other facilities. >> live from santa rosa with more. katy. >> kristen and dan, i can tell you that the wind has died down to almost no wind at this point. it is chillier, which is a good thing for firefighters and ib want to show you the fire on the hill. that threatened kaiser permanente fire earlier. and that fire has been greatly diminished. but if we pan to the right, you can see how dangerously close those flames came to kaiser permanente hospital. the blue light is the edge of the hospital. you can see doctors and nurses evacuating that hospital. scary moments this morning as the flames were licking at the edge of this building, this area

and staff has worked tirelessly despite losing their own homes and many of the people that were in this hospital, some of them transferred to santa rosa memorial hospital and that's where we spoking to dr. chad krilch earlier today. >> we know many people have lost their homes, so we have shelters set up for them so they can rest here and either come back to work or go to see what is going on with the places where they lived. >> reporter: memorial hospital is asking any medical profect n professionals to call into their labor line and they could use volunteers in certain professions. so please take the time to call in if you're able to volunteer. for the residents around this

area, please stay away from the er unless you are having a medical emergency. if you need medication, they're asking you go to urgent care or some facility that does not get in the way of emergency medical responses because they have had many people coming in today with not only burn injuries but a lot of people with respiratory issues. we're live in sanltau rosa, abc 7 news. >> some of the most gut wrenching damage we have seen all day long is in the silverado country club area. >> and once again live. katy. >> reporter: kristen, dan, since you saw us last we've crossed the street. we're on the other side of the street from the house we showed you yurler. but it's all so devastating. in this example you can see part of a wall still standing but really standing amid a sea of rubble and like in so many other examples, there are still hot spots burning here.

they might be too small for you to see at this point. it was a few hoir hours ago i was able to talk to a cal fire chief and he talked to us about what it's been like. >> this one hits close to home. i've been assigned to this facility for just short of 10 years. so this is my home away from home. i feel like a member of the community here. i know a lot of the residents that have been effected by this and several people who have lost their homes. so it's very disheartening to be out there and there's definitely helplessness that we go through when we have incidents like this. >> reporter: help on the way in the form of reinforcements. he let us know they're expecting tomorrow and as we've heard drew tooma reporting all night. better the battalion chief told me it's always unpredictable. he says all crews can do is

focus on sfrtructure protection abc 7 news. >> thanks very much. we continue to watch the winds very closely and for the latest on that, let's head to meteorologist. a lot of folks are wondering and asking how did the wind get so fast in the north bay late last night and earlier this morning? it's known as a down sloping wind effect. you have an area of low pressure to our east, high pressure to our north and these two are opposing forces and they create a wind tunnel effect and that wind tunnel was aimed right at us in the bay area. those winds come over and down our hills and the wind will compress, heat up and warm the atmosphere around it and bring in the breezy, warm, dry conditions and that's what we had late last night and earl a ethis morning and they came in

excess of 40 miles per hour. really encouraging news for firefighters. you're hearing from all of our reporters out across the north bay. they're all commenting how it's relaxed. along with calm wind, we're seeing the humidity levels rise significantly. when the fires are burning early this morning, humidity levels between 10 and 14% and those numbers have drastically changed. 50 to 60% range. so the winds are calming down. the humidity is heightening and that's good news for firefighters. the winds will stay calm through tomorrow afternoon. they have an 18-hour window where the winds will remain calm and into the evening tuesday and early wednesday we do see those winds likely picking up once again. so something will be tracking but we still have that red flag

warning for high fire danger. still in effect for all the areas shaded in red.red.red.red. we do still have the active fire and it's there to spread rapidly since containment is really low right now. >> this next 24 hours will be critical and welcome news certainly for firefighters. >> animals tonight are also being evacuated. >> not just people. jonathan bloom is live at the napa county animal center. >> reporter: the generosity has been arriving as quickly as the animals. the lobby piled high with dog and cat food brought for the dozens of animals that have started to arrive here, mainly with their owners dropping them off as they fled from the fire. they tell us all the food will beexhausted within the next couple of days. some of it's been donated by the very same pet owners dropping off their pets. in all it's brought in more than

100 petsz. 50 dogs and 50 cats. this is not the easiest thing for animals to go through. >> they're all just really stressed out. this is pretty scary for the animals as it is for the people getting evacuated, having to leave right away. people may have a disaster kit for their pets but maybe they're not leaving with everything they do and some of the vet offices in town are open if people need medicine for their pets too. >> reporter: yes, that's a rooster you just heard. it turntz out it's also taken in some livestock, chickens, geese, alpackaus, burrows and a goat. and at this point that's pretty much all they have room for. they have a pastor for the horses to run around. so right now they are cramped but comfortable. the dogs and cats, more than more room due in part to the cages and carriers that have been donated by people.

as for the food, they're still accepting donations. pet doggy plans to bring fromd f santaoo cruz in the nea future. >> great to see all the generous people wanting to help. >> people really responding. centered in north santa rosa all day lang. >> so much devastation there and hawaii filed this report earlier from the fountain grove neighborhood. >> reporter: as night falls the devastation from the fire continues to be truly unreal. we've got an eery glow all around this neighborhood. this is the fountain grove neighborhood near the fountain grove golf course. we've counted dozens and dozens of homes that have been utterly destroyed from the raging fire storm which blew through here early, early this morning. there's truly nothing lefts. in fact for a long time we

couldn't tell whether they were private homes or apartment complex. they were upscale homes built near the fountain grove golf course. beautiful parts, parts, parts of the neighborhood are bluffs over looking the golf course. but so many homes, neighborhood after neighborhood completely gone. there's a garage door, another broken gas main. we're seeing so many of them. folks had very little notice, very little warning about getting out. we've seen a lot of cars that have been left in the driveways. they have been completely gutted and burned through and through from this fire. in fact, so badly burned we can't even recognize the make and model of some of the vehicles. here we have here a decoration for halloween. really one of the few things that have survived this fire. have seen very few people in

this neighborhood because it's still off limits. police have set up barricades and road blocks to keep people out because at this point it's still too unsafe. we have been allowed inside the neighborhood as long as -- but we're taking our chances of course and we know the risks. we have been trained, safety training. but for folks who want to venture in and check out what's been lost, it's just simply too dangerous. as we come down here one of the few things that remains in tact is that u hall truck. the back of it is singed. but most of it is still in tact. unclear if somebody was moving in or moving out. scenes of devastation continue pretty much everywhere and for most of the day we were seeing active fires to the north and to the south of us. for now it seems like the smoke has dissipated a bit.

and it's going to be days before we actually know how badly the damage is around here. in santa rosa. abc 7 news. >> good point. it will be days. well, our

the wild fires burning in the north bay are being blamed for at least 10 deaths. in at least 15 other homes, businesses and other homes have been is it d stroid. >> hospitals had to be ev evacuated. two of them. what first sparked the fire is unknown but strong wind gusts

helped spread it very quickly and we've shown you pictures of embers blowing in every direction with 50, 60, 70 miles per hour gusts. >> there's heightened security at the scene of the tubbs fire. >> some reports of looting, not widespread. there is a mandatory evacuation area in sunrise until tomorrow morning. >> anybody out in the areas in the mandatory evacuation zones will be subject to stop and potentially arrest if they refuse to either go back inside or leave the area. in this case they would have to leave a mandatory evacuation zones. >> they're anxious to protect property and insure the safety of their officers. >> where you saw that official speaking is the command center that's been set up in the sonoma county fair grounds in sonoma. >> reporter: i'm here at the fair grounds in sonoma. you can see all american tent

and fire support. they're turning this big open field into an incident command center. you can see the inmate fire crews setting opkitchen. they expect to serve up to 3,000 firefighters starting tomorrow morning. they have so many firefighters in the lines they don't know how many they have. that's one of the duties they have overnight trying to figure out how many are there and exactly how many people. because you see with such a fast moving wild fire more than crews responding quickly. some of the smallest stations will send their crews out there and start working. so they're going to figure out how many people they have and add up all of those assets and they set up a logistics center. they held briefings here tomorrow morning. starting at 11:00 a.m. they have people starting on the financial aspects of it. how to get reimbursed for all

[ cheers and applause ] how are you doing? >> i'm doing great. >> jimmy: i like that shirt. >> yeah, you want it? >> jimmy: yeah, i do want it. >> i'll leave it out for you. >> jimmy: that would be nice. >> i can't wear it again. >> jimmy: yeah, you really can't wear a shirt like that more than once. once you wear that, it's worn, right? >> that's it. >> jimmy: you know what would be interesting? you should have done something like a tie-in with the film

"marshall" and the show marshall's. >> how can we make this work? >> jimmy: we got to think ahead the next time. maybe for the sequel. there won't be a sequel, though. >> there will not. >> jimmy: most everybody knows. let's be honest, not that many people know but thurgood marshall was the first african-american on the supreme court, but this movie takes place well before that in his life. >> you can clap for that. [ cheers and applause ] >> jimmy: when he was a young lawyer traveling around the country righting wrongs. >> yes, this is way before that. this is 1941, before the u.s. enters world war ii. this case is a lesser known case. it's the state of connecticut versus joseph spell. it's a rape case. and that's why we chose it because, you know, if it was brown versus board of education, if it was him entering the supreme court, you would know the end of that story. this is something that you don't know. >> jimmy: that's right, yeah. also it's fun to see him as a

young lawyer and think about hm in human terms in that way. >> yeah, because he was a fun guy. you know, he liked his bourbon, his cigars, his cigarettes. he was a man about town. he had friends in the harlem ren in sans. >> jimmy: how do you learn that stuff about him? >> reading. just -- it's, you know, in this case, i -- you know, when i played real people in the past, i did a lot of firsthand research with the family. the family was kind of hands off in this case. >> jimmy: oh, is that right? >> yeah. >> jimmy: but didn't his son write you a letter? >> his son was basically the deciding factor of me playing the role. you know. i had reservations about playing the character because we're different complexions but the producer paula wagner and director reginald hudland pulled out this letter in our meeting. after we talked about

everything. we debated. here's a letter from the son john marshall. and he wants you to play thurgood. >> jimmy: it is possible that reggie hudland forged that letter to get you to play him? >> it is possible. but i did check. >> jimmy: that's pretty great for his son to write -- because i'm trying to imagine if there was a movie about my dad's life, it would basically be about gardening and bowling and maybe an asthma attack every once in a while. but -- >> but who would you want to play it, though? >> jimmy: the only celebrity that really looks like my dad is wolf blitzer. i guess you want a younger version. so maybe wolf blitzer in his first acting role. as my dad. this is pretty cool, too. this is something that samuel jackson posted to his instagram account on saturday which is a great instagram account because

because i see cheeto and mackie allot. very rare that you have sam jackson and fishburn in the same place. laurence fishburne will be in the antman movie? >> is that okay? i think that's well known. >> jimmy: if i say it, it's okay. >> yes, he is. >> jimmy: that's all you can say about it. is this maybe for the tag or the end of one of the upcoming movies like "thor." >> no, that's too many black people -- >> jimmy: is there a quota? i didn't know that. >> you got to wait for black panther for that to happen. >> jimmy: black panther, i was thinking about black panther today. it doesn't have a secret identity like most superheroes. he has an identity. i know this because i was a lonely child reading all his

comic books. he doesn't have a secret identity. is that disappointing? >> no, no, no, no. there's still the -- there's a certain like fear factor that the mask creates and there's still sort of like a legend around the character that has been created. i guess you would have to either go to some of the comic books or see it in a movie, but there's an aspect of it that's like is this black panther thing real? that aspect is there. you don't need the secret identity because there's still the mystery of, you know, the panthers prowess. >> jimmy: it seems like you've given this a lot more thought than i ever would have guessed you had. did the black panther's son write you a letter asking you to play him? there's a lot of research going on. >> no. >> jimmy: but if he had, that would be pretty exciting, yeah.
