the nhl's newest franchise played an emotional home opener in las vegas. the golden knights paid tribute to the victims of last week's massacre. they replaced all the advertising on the boards with the message you see there, "vegas strong." >> they escorted first responders onto the ice, and a moment of silence, one second for every victim killed. and the nfl is preparing to take on the take a knee national anthem protest. >> roger goodell sent a letter to team owners that reads in part, we believe everyone should stand for the national anthem. we need to move past this controversy. it goes on to say that the nfl has developed a plan that will be reviewed next week. goodell's statement came on the same day the president asked on twitter why the nfl gets massive

tax breaks while, in his words, disrespecting the anthem, flag and the country. meantime, former chicago bears star mike ditka has jumped into the national anthem debate. he told jim gray on westwood one's radio pregame program that all of a sudden it's become a big deal now about oppression. there's been no oppression in the last 100 years that i know of. ditka insisted that he wasn't condemning anyone but urged players to protest when the game is over. >> and the rapper eminem is criticizing the president for inflaming the nfl protest. >> this is getting a lot of attention overnight. he actually went beyond that issue. lots of reaction, including from colin kaepernick and lebron james to this. this is all at the b.e.t. hip-hop awards, eminem calling out his form of distraction.

good morning. i'm diane macedo. good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are some of our top headlines we're following on "world news now". more bombshells in the harvey weinstein sexual harassment scandal. >> even more women are stepping forward with their own harrowing accusations. including three oscar-nominated actresses. and the wildfires sweeping across california are blamed for at least 17 deaths. more evacuation orders were issued overnight as the fires continued to rage. wineries, hotels, more than 2,000 buildings have been destroyed, including many homes. the nfl commissioner, roger goodell telling owners that players should stand during the national anthem, he went on to say that the controversy has proven to be divisive for the league and the fans.

clinton are joining a growing list of those condemning the producer. >> and his company is launching an investigation and denying prior knowledge of this. >> this comes as two unidentified women were spotted leaving weinstein's new york city home with luggage. >> reporter: in 2015, as part of a police sting operation, a filipino-italian model secretly recorded an encounter with half very weinstein in which he appears to admit groping her. >> why yesterday you touch my breasts? >> oh, please, i'm sorry, just come on, i'm used to that. >> reporter: the case was presented to prosecutors who called the recording horrifying to listen to but insufficient to prove a crime. other women have now come forward with other stories of sexual misconduct, including gwyneth paltrow who says she was 22 when he harassed her. angelina jolie says she had a bad experience with weinstein and, in a news conference,

program and gave congress until march to come up with a compromise. but this week he hinged any new daca legislation on a list of hard line requirements, including a border wall. and one of the allegations regarding the travel ban has been dismissed. the supreme court set aside a suit from maryland that took issue with the policy's so-called anti-muslim language. the white house argued against the case going forward because a new version of the ban takes effect next wednesday. 4/ a separate case from hawaii relating to refugees was not addressed. a new report by the world health organization finds global obesity rates among children have increased 1000% since 1975. the largest study of its kind published ahead of world obesity day which is today and finds the most rapid increases are in parts of asia and in low to middle-income countries. they point to an increase in factory-produced food that is dense in calories but poor in nutrition. crack open the safe. you will need serious cash to

surveillance video captures surveillance video captures an attempted arson at a new jersey butcher shop. the suspect sprays what appears to be an accelerant. and they light a match. they quickly run from the scene. the store and nearby businesses were damaged by the flames. police posted the video on social media. and a town is taking on bullying by passing a law saying parents could be punished for their child's bad behavior. >> they could face fines in the hundreds of dollars, jail time or both if they don't step in. here's erielle reshef. >> reporter: a small town mom whose son was bullied is turning her heartache into action. her son was ruthlessly attacked by an eighth grade classmate right in front of her. >> he sucker punched him right in the face. hit him as hard as he could. >> reporter: crego set up this facebook page, calling out pervasive bullying in her town. the incident with her son sparking outrage. >> what really alarmed me about

burned so far, leaving piles of smoldering debris where homes once stood. those flames instantly turned world famous wineries and vineyards into just charred ruins. at least 7 people have died. many are still missing and more than 2,000 homes and other buildings were destroyed. >> new evacuation orders have been issued. a va hospital has just been evacuated, as well. and today, those high winds are expected to kick up once again. abc's matt gutman has the latest from hard-hit santa rosa. >> reporter: firefighters stretched to the brink trying to get an upper hand in some of the most destructive and deadly wildfires in california history. >> we have firefighters working on their third shift who have not been relieved. >> reporter: the fire now twice the size of washington, d.c. and still growing. at least 2,000 structures destroyed, including entire neighborhoods, shopping centers, restaurants and hotels. this was a hilton hotel complex. you can feel the intensity of the heat coming off of it.

firefighters are so strapped they're not worried about the flames inside, but they are concerned about are those embers flying out of it. fire crews in santa rosa forced to let homes burn because they didn't have enough water. >> we didn't have enough water, so the water supply is difficult. it's just better to let it burn. >> reporter: the fires erupted sunday night as strong so-called diablo winds pushed hot, dry air across california wine country and exploded in size, now well over 100,000 acres. when you look at this scene you get a sense of the explosions that this fire triggered. this engine block belonged to that car. the explosions flipping car after car after car. >> it's with sorrow that i tell you today we have confirmed two fatalities. charles and sara rippey, ages 100 and 98. >> the couple, married 75 years. their son, mike, helped sift through their home. >> my father, i was sleeping in

a different room and we found him halfway to her room. and so he never made it to her room. but even if he had made it, there was no way he was going to leave her. >> reporter: there was nearly 200 people reported missing. one of them, steve liner. we met his brother al earlier. >> i am very worried about him. >> reporter: they served in vietnam together but al hasn't been able to get into the destruction zone, but our press passes gave us access, so we drove him in. >> i've called him god knows how many times, and the phones are all down. >> reporter: then turned on his brother's street. is that him? >> that's him! i've been looking for two days for you guys! >> reporter: and then that reunion, brothers in arms. sheriff's officials tell me they expect most but not all of the missing to be found alive. these fires have been catastrophic for these communities. this was a k-mart. and you can see aisle after charred aisle behind me.

it would be nice if this cold front would meander and bring a little wet weather our way, but that's simply not happening. there will be a deeper dip in the jet stream, which will drop the temps and a little more moisture from los angeles to san diego. but still mainly staying dry. a little relief possibly as we go into friday, but even this little bit of onshore flow will dissipate as we go into a drier weekend. and tensions with north korea may actually be rising after another show of force by the u.s. two bombers flew over the sea of japan in a nighttime mission and in an unprecedented move, they were escorted by south korean and japanese fighters. the mission came as the white house said the president and military officials discussed options to respond to north korea. and the supreme court has dismissed one of two challenges to the trump administration's travel ban. the suit from maryland took issue with the anti-muslim language of the policy. the white house said the case should be set aside because of a new version of the ban which takes effect next wednesday. the high court did not address a separate case from hawaii related to refugees. the white house says president trump was just joking when he appeared to suggest he was more intelligent than

secretary of state rex tillerson. the president dismissed reports that tillerson called him a moron, but added that if it were true they should compare iq tests. the president also escalated his feud with senator bob corker, calling him liddle bob corker, that follows his criticism that the president could set the country on a path to world war iii. mr. trump insists the spat would not affect his efforts to pass tax reform. we have new information in the movements of the las vegas shooter. sources tell abc news that he had access to a service elevator at the mandalay bay hotel, and it's believed that could be one reason he went there. the news comes amid a change in the timeline that revealed staff at the hotel knew about an active shooter six minutes before the rampage started. now there are some questions as to whether the hotel could have done more the to stop him. >> you have that human factor, where it goes to a person and they end up logging into computer and they may call dispatch at the same time he may have already started firing.

>> we have some new video overnight of items being removed from the home the shooter shared with his girlfriend. authorities have searched the property twice since the massacre. on capitol hill, bipartisan legislation was introduced to ban the bump stock devices used in the las vegas shooting. the house bill bans the manufacturer, sale and use of bump stocks and similar devices that essentially allow you to convert a semi automatic weapon to fire like a fully automatic weapon. the legislation has 20 original cosponsors, ten republicans and ten democrats. meanwhile, a gun control group is suing the top maker of those bump stocks on behalf of the shooting victims. three weeks after hurricane maria devastated puerto rico, the island is facing a health care crisis. hospitals are in desperate need of medication and overwhelmed by patients. in some cases, seriously ill patients are not receiving urgently needed treatment. half of the workers have returned to work. in the meantime, the white house is asking congress for $5

the nhl's newest franchise played an emotional home opener in las vegas. the golden knights paid tribute to the victims of last week's massacre. they replaced all the advertising on the boards with the message you see there, "vegas strong." >> they escorted first responders onto the ice, and a moment of silence, one second for every victim killed. and the nfl is preparing to take on the take a knee national anthem protest. >> roger goodell sent a letter to team owners that reads in part, we believe everyone should stand for the national anthem. we need to move past this controversy. it goes on to say that the nfl has developed a plan that will be reviewed next week. goodell's statement came on the same day the president asked on twitter why the nfl gets massive

tax breaks while, in his words, disrespecting the anthem, flag and the country. meantime, former chicago bears star mike ditka has jumped into the national anthem debate. he told jim gray on westwood one's radio pregame program that all of a sudden it's become a big deal now about oppression. there's been no oppression in the last 100 years that i know of. ditka insisted that he wasn't condemning anyone but urged players to protest when the game is over. >> and the rapper eminem is criticizing the president for inflaming the nfl protest. >> this is getting a lot of attention overnight. he actually went beyond that issue. lots of reaction, including from colin kaepernick and lebron james to this. this is all at the b.e.t. hip-hop awards, eminem calling out his form of distraction. in a rap he said the president gets an enormous reaction when he attacks the nfl so we focus on that instead of talking
