on the atlas, sulfur and other fires, but there's a lock way to go. parts of sonoma are on edge, waiting to see which way the fire turns. we have team komcoverage in sonoma, where residents and firefighters are working to protect the community. lisa? >> reporter: we're here on wilking way inside the mandatory evacuation zone, and there are some residents who refuse to leave. they have this water truck standing by, and they have also set up all of these ladders. they are watering down that roof. you can see that it's shaped shingle and flammable. the fear is if this house goes down, the entire neighborhood will. >> we're going to make a stand and save the neighborhood. >> reporter: those aren't just words, they are serious about the task at hand. the one leading the charge is a retired battalion chief. he's organized this entire

effort and got a backhoe in to dig a trench to create even more densible space behindthe houses. because as it stands right now, the fire is less than two files away from here. >> once we got the water here, the inch and a half hose, we can take care of it. >> this is my house. i'm trying to protect it, to the extent i can. >> reporter: and police were manning the roadblock just down the street know these folks are back here and that they are staying at their own risk. meantime, just about a mile from here, managers at they're ready to move 78 patients, if necessar. their site was evacuated today night in santa rosa because of the fire's proximity. back here live now. there is a bit more ash and smoke in the air right now. and the group of neighbors who are watching over this house say they will not evacuate unless

the winds suddenly shift in this direction and really rev up tonight. >> let's hope that doesn't happen, lisa. thank you very much. the main job now is to protect people and property and stop these fires. as that process continues, cal fire is investigating whether downed power lines sparked the fires. but remember, pg&e has been fined before for lack of paym t maintenance on trees near its lines. dan noyes talked with some line workers who believe high winds, power lines and overgrown trees were a deadly combination. >> reporter: just as the fires were igniting across napa and sonoma sunday night, power lines on myers drive in santa rosa were failing. >> and you see that. what's going through your mind? >> i was kind of panicked at first. >> reporter: christian took this video from the safety of his

home, the wind pushing the power hines, some falling on to ryan's car. >> it was terrifying. i was trying to remain calm. >> reporter: i caught ryan on the roof of his house today, clearing dry leaves with his girlfriend. it was a close call. >> reporter: it's starting to be fall, so there's a lot of dry leaves. so that easily could have hit one of our houses and gone up. >> reporter: downed power lines and exploding transformers may have played a role in the fires. >> electrical investigation, 47 maverick. >> reporter: maverick court, where homes and lives were lost. >> basically hazardous conditions, possible transformer explosion. >> reporter: several pg&e line workers tell me they believe hurricane level winds pushed trees into power lines that failed and pg&e has to do a better job of keeping vegetation cut back. this is myers drive today where the sparks fell. >> i do understand some

further destruction. >> the fire got here at like 2:00 a.m. but we woke up at about 1:00 to 1 sa 1:15 a.m., and people were calling us trying to cake us up. >> reporter: his family made it out of their redwood valley neighborhood. their home was spared. but tim smith is still processing the devastation. his neighbors lost everything. >> i don't feel like it's really hit me yet. i've just been running around putting out spot fires in the neighborhood. >> reporter: firefighters are battling two fires in mendocino county. eight people have died, 8,000 displaced. but the situation is changing by the day. >> today, i'm telling you eight battalions, and tomorrow once confirmation has happened, the number will go up. >> reporter: officials briefed residents on the latest on the fires. we caught up with several from potter valley.

belongings are gone. tough way to start their new life. janeane dell vega is on that sory. >> reporter: the couple lives in this neighborhood. for blocks, everything is black, burned, and flattened. it was the picture perfect wedding. oscar and katie couldn't wait to start their life together as husband and wife. the groom works in marketing, while the bride is a nurse in santa rosa. >> we just worked so hard to get to this point. or very first paycheck i put it towards moving into this house. and making it a home. >> reporter: they just returned from mexico on sunday. they went to sleep that night, but their dog molly started barking. alerting them to smoke filling their house. >> i realized something was bad, like something was going on outside. so i woke her up, i said there's a house on fire. >> if molly hadn't woke us up, i don't know what would have happened. because our fire alarm didn't go

off or anything. >> reporter: they quickly started grabbing a camera and wedding jewelry, driving away, they knew it may be the last time they saw their home standing. >> everything was engulfed in flames. and the embers were just flying down. when i opened up my car door, they were doing into my car. >> reporter: later that day, once the fire swept through, a friend sent them video of their home, now in rubble, all the wedding gifts gone. the only things recognizable are the garage door and the mail box. >> i don't know where to begin? >> i kept reminding her, we're out, we're alive. this is horrible. but like we have the three dogs with us. and some people weren't lucky to get their animals out. >> reporter: they're staying with family for the short term. overwhelmed hike so many others, they face an uncertain future, but are grateful to have each other to hold on to.

this next story starts with great loss and ends with great generosity. we met an iron worker who learned the fire in santa rosa stole just about all of his possessions, including the tools that provide his livelihood. he got help from a stranger who knows what it's hike to lose something precious. matt keller was there as these two strangers connected. >> reporter: the recovery in san to rosa for dana hanson begins in san pablo. all his tools were destroyed on monday. "abc7 news" interviewed him about his mistake. >> i saw dana on the news. i was playing with my phone and i heard iron worker and i looked over and i caught his last name.

>> reporter: she reached out to let dana know she had a full set of iron worker tools. they connected and this morning they met at their house in san pablo. >> there's harnessing and the cool belt. >> reporter: but there's something special about these tools. they belonged to another iron worker named michael ewing. >> michael was what they called a rod buster, which is -- he did rebar work. >> reporter: michael died more than two years ago at the age of 31 from colon cancer. because of the devastating fire in santa rosa -- >> is it enough to get you back to work? >> absolutely. >> i'm so glad. >> reporter: the future is unknown for dana. he's been in contact with his insurance company, but it's unclear when the rebuilding process will begin. but today, he got a little bit back from the ashes. and a grieving mother did, too. >> it's like a testimony to michael.
