evacuation of family for north of east napa street to the end of east napa street. >> officials are reminding evacuees there will be no questions about immigration status asked at any of the shelters. rescued animals are being taken to the sonoma county fairgrounds. >> let's take a look at the size of the fires. these numbers are mind boggling. a total of 183,000 acres have burned so far. the largest is the atlas fire at 48,000 acres. the nuns, adobe fires have scorched 44,000 acres so far. >> the tubbs far scarred 34,000 acres. the pocket fire in sonoma county has charred 10,000 acres. >> the sulphur fire has eaten up

2500 acres. containment is between 5 to 55%. >> i want to speak to those people impacted. all of us here in the state operation center, those involved in the massive response efforts to these fires are thinking about you. our hearts go out to o ow affected by the fires and we understand lives have been changed forever by these events. this is difficult. we are dedicated to helping you and the first responders out there be able to mitigate the situation. we're going to get through this, however. the emergency is not over. we continue to work at it but we are seeing some great progress
3:03 pm
in some of the areas that the fires have impacted. >> some of the people, the oes director was talking about are from calistouga. the city remains under evacuation order. >> laura anthony has been on the front lines with those firefighters and join us with more. >> reporter: there's 25% containment here on the tubbs fire. most of the fire fight keeps moving up mount st. helena. this is the robert louis stephenson state park. you can see how the ground here has been charred all the way up to the highway. they are fine with that at this point. they are using the highway as a line of demarcation. except for this home destroyed on the out skirts of town. it's so far, so good where one family left a message and a snack for firefighters outside
3:04 pm
their evacuated home. >> we don't feel like we're in imminent changer. >> reporter: others have chosen to stay. this couple told us they are feeling a bit more at ease now that the stubborn tubbs fire is 25% contained. >> i have a cat that's semi ferral and at least not transportable and i'm not leaving here. we don't feel like we need to at this point. >> reporter: firefighters try to hold the line above highway 29. crews hit this flare up from the ground long before it could jump the roadway. in the meantime near the summit of mount st. helena put water on the flames. >> the fires across the state and the local area. we're doing the best we can with the resources at scene. >> reporter: we're back live
3:05 pm
here. we're showing you a dozer line that the fire crews have dug here. next to highway 29. so far we've seen that the fire has stayed on the west side and the south side of that dozer line. that is the hope tonight. even as the winds may pick up that they can keep this fire on this side, the west side of the highway. as we speak larry, there's a helicopter above me about to make another water drop. this activity is continuing. folks down the way are keeping a close eye on things. >> there's a lot of concern that the winds will increase. let's get more on the conditions and the winds that may be coming. >> the winds are really going to increase later on tonight. right now firefighters are getting a much needed break. live doppler 7 showing you clear

3:08 pm
i've talked to a lot of desperate people worried about their homes. even loved ones who chose to stay on this section of road between here and the oakville grade to the north. one woman drove up to us in panic over her husband. >> he decided he's going to save our driveway and there's seven homes up there. he's up there fighting the fire now. we're hoping that -- it's two guys. hopefully they both get out okay. >> reporter: she got one phone call from him saying he was fighting flames. we drove up part of dry creek road. we tried to go up the driveway along with the u.s. forest service crew. we were not able to locate her husband. fire crews were hosing down dry dru brush and pumping water out of backyard pools. the low line closer and closer to some homes along dry creek
