the fire danger is far from over, as the firefighters give us a heartbreaking look at the inferno that they saw. good evening, it is now been six days since the north bay fire broke out and tonight, firefighters are hoping calm winds will help them gain the

upper hand. the death toll rose to 40 and searchers fear are climbing as they are finding victims buried in the buildings. santa rosa's hospital is expected to reopen. flames approaching the hospital forced it to evacuate early monday morning. >> a big concern through the evening centers around the nonefires that merged in to one. the fire is 15% contained. we have more on the fight tonight. >> reporter: yes, we are in the downtown plaza, it's quiet behind me, everything is closed. the light that you are seeing is coming from our equipment this evening. here's a look at one

neighborhood near a winery. the oldest one. one of the oldest in sonoma. we found a deserted neighborhood with sprinklers going off on the top of a home. the homeowners appeared to have left, but left the sprinklers on. their defense against the threat. ad we found an active fire burn engi ing in a grassy field near a home that appeared to be evacuated. we noticed a large stucco home sitting on the hill and below the fire and emergency officials blocked off roads in the area. cal fire officials are putting in extra hours to try to contain this fire. >> the lower half, just above sonoma, the wind was blowing and it came in to the north end of

sonoma there and the guys were taking action on that. it was headed around the corner and blew out again on another spot. they are actively on it, and it's still working its way down toward the city. >> so, they are attacking the fire from all angles. sky 7 shows a tanker dropping fire retardant from kenwood. you can see it's quiet here. a few minutes ago, i did see a couple of fire trucks leave. not sure where they are headed and as for traffic. most of the people around here have left to eevacuation centers. the that is the lawsuit estimatestimat -- that is the latest. >> let's check in with the meteorologist who is monitoring the wind conditions in sonoma and the rest of the north bay.

>> the winds have been 20 miles an hour but it has calmed down. we will show you where the active fires are. the winds generally light. one exception in the hills between the tubs and fire and sulfer fire. the winds are gusting to 15 mile answer hour. that's the exception and not the rule. the winds are light at this hour as well. winds are light, could have a gust in the 13 or 14 miles an hour. but the winds will stay light to calm for the next 24 hours. we will have a red flag warning. the firefighters are worried that the fires would spread to other parts of the north bay. we will look at the air quality in the next comes days and we are tracking a chance for rain. we will have the details ahead in the forecast.

>> last night, we showed you the perspective of a sheriff's deputy evacuating people in santa rosa as the tubs fire destroyed homes. tonight, we get another look from a firefighter on the front lines. >> this is video posted by the berkley fire department. late sunday night, they made up the hour north to help the neighbors in the north bay. after driving past a k-mart. they made their way to a subdivision, where hundreds of homes had already burned to the ground. the stunning scene of destruction looked like a war zone. from a first responder's camera,s that one firefighter called it the line of sorrow and that's where they made their stand. by late morning. they had stopped the fire from spreading further down the street saving about 30 homes.

>> sadly, one home they could not save in the neighborhood belonged to a berkley firefighter. they were forced to leave in the middle of the night with the clothes on their backs. the funds have been approaching their goal. the struggle continues for families. we have more on the efforts. lisa? >> eric, a little goes a long way. that's what those in the community are learning tonight. by bringing things back to basics. by offering a hot cup of chocolate, or a laugh. >> don't do the magic trick, okay, open up your hand. >> reporter: they were treated to an extra special show at the magic aal ice cream shop

tonight. evacuated families came in from the smokey air for a much needed break. after all, laughter is considered the best medicine. because life has been far from easy with the families with young children. >> they are scared, they don't know where their kucousins and families and friends are going to go. >> there's a renewed effort to bring normalcy back. at the rec center that is now a shelter, they want to stream the 49ers game on the big screen. >> you have a hot dog and chips and watching the 49ers. that can be not anything more than normal. >> anything to keep the stress down, is a good thing. >> finding your next meal is likely the last thing that anyone wants to think about. that's why this volunteer is trying to get food boxes made for those not in shelters but

that still need help. like when they are waiting in long lines at the assistance center or while multiple families are displaced and living under one roof. >> trying to feed everyone is really hard. what we are going to do tomorrow, we are going to open up a spot here where families can come and pick up food and produce bags and things like that to take home. >> and tomorrow, people can start picking up boxed meals over at francetti pizza, wood fire kitchen on dutton avenue, starting at noon. >> the assistance center opened up as a one-stop shop for federal, state and local assistance to replace driver's licenses and getting housing. they help hadded 387 people today and will be open every day from 9-7 for the next two weeks and at one point the line stretched a block and a half and

some say it was worth the wait. >> the people here are absolutely outstanding. they are helpful. it's amazing there and they walk you around and make sure you are set, make sure you have water and something to eat. >> you can register for help with fema there at the center. or you can go online to disaster assistance.gov, we have all the information on our website. and on our abc 7 news app. people living in the fire zone had a chance to hear from governor jerry brown and our two u.s. senators in santa rosa today. tiffany wilson was there. >> reporter: many of the people inside the townhall were weary with worry and numb. >> all i got out with was my kitten and dog. >> reporter: it's been an emotional week. they moved to escape new evacuation wagz notices and now

she wants to hear one thing. >> that we are all going to get help. >> reporter: today governor brown surveyed the destruction from helicopter and on foot. he told the crowd, help will arrive. he was met with applause, but his optimistic statement did not satisfy everyone. mny want to know specifics like where do you get your mail? how do you get permits to rebuild? and what do you need to get a new driver's license? >> if you go online, it's like november before you can get an appointment at the dmv and i'm not sure what they are going to require in terms of being able to prove your identification. >> reporter: others had more perhaps impossible questions, like when will the fire start and the recovery begin? >> that's the big question. and nobody knows. i just hope that between the politicians, our cities and all of these wonderful people, that,

it will be soon. make it happen. >> reporter: today, a small glimmer of good news in the acres of ash and rubl, firefighters were able to walk the coffee park neighborhood looking for hot spots. they tell me they did not find any. in santa rosa, tiffany wilson. ab 7 news. >> sky 7 was over sugar loaf ridge. we are able to pinpoint nearby streets and land marks. here the fire is not far from mccormick lane and stern ranch road. this gives abc 7 news the ability to show the location of the fire and give you a better idea of where the fires are burning. some people are now able to head home again while others received evacuation orders today. you are looking at the fire that forced people to leave the area on both sides of highway 12. fairfield police tweeted the work going on inside the emergency operations center.

back with the incredible tale of two napa men who have the entire community to save their homes. when cal fire wasity n itnot ab make it, they stepped up. >> reporter: the flames moved in fast and furious sunday night. and quickly began threatening homes. and two men jumped in to action. nearly week later -- >> you can see the trees got scorched. >> reporter: he showed us where his battle began. >> i'm reliving it as i watch the videos. >> reporter: the fight that night was against this fire. their weapon buehle doll dozers. >> you don't have a lot of time to think, it's stop it now or that neighborhood was going to go. >> reporter: as the heat and smoke intensified the cal fire officials shifted to life

safety. with no help on the way, he and his boss stepped up to protect their community. communicating by cell phone, as they use their bull dozers to dig the critical lines. >> we are looking, it goes down four miles it was all on fire at the same time. >> reporter: there were several close calls and adrenalin cooked in. >> what you don't notice by how looking at the line is how hot it was. >> reporter: how hot was it? >> very hot, my hair was singed. >> they kept at it for four days. dan, a former marine, learned to cut fire lines in the military. >> this is a difference a dozer makes that's why they use them. >> reporter: the winds are calmer but the fire danger is a concern. dan is on alert. >> you can see where we stopped it. >> reporter: brown volley neighbors are thankful for dan and his boss's work to save this

neighborhood. they have set up a go fund me to reburg them for their fuel. but they are refusing any kind of pay back. he said they will likely pay it forward and give the money away. his pay-back, seeing a community still standing, untouched by disasterous wildfires. >> if that equipment was not here, this line would not be here and the fire would have been in the neighborhood. >> reporter: abc 7 news. >> we have a look now with a nuns fire as it rapidly advanced this morning. intense flames glowed against the night sky, we saw fire truck after fire truck going in to the fire zone. the wind gusts in that area, really drove the flames. abc 7 news reporter, was along highway 12. >> reporter: in just a ten mile stretch you will see destruction burning hill sides and homes far enough away from danger. >> i'm surprised that this is where it is.

>> kevin is staying behind inside an eevacuation zone. concerned about a spot fire burning just east of him on highway 12. >> you have to do what you can. don't want to just sit and watch it happen. ? sandwiched in the middle of the massive tubs and nuns fires. the nearly 200 acre burned forced mandatory eevacuations for the santa rosa area saturday morning. >> the winds came up and pushed the fire down the hill. >> firefighters at first were scrambling to protect the homes of more than 3,000 evacuees but a heavy response is slowing the blaze and another ten minutes east, destruction from the enormous nuns fire. firefighters believe that the nearby spot fire came from this direction. the only certainty for the first responders the unpredictablity of the blazes. >> when the winds picked up, we were not sure which direction the fire was going to go. >> they checked in with family

and friends and social media so they are not reported missing. on highway 12, veronica miracle. abc 7 news. >> take a look at all the item this is that were donated today to the north bay fire victims. you can see, a van and an suv packed full of items full of toiletries and bottled water and clothing. the ems staff loaded all the items up and drove them to the north bay today. time for a look at the forecast. we know the winds were driving the fire last night. but they calmed down a bit today. >> and the good news, we will enter a stretch of whether we will have calm winds for the next several hours and days. firefighters are certainly getting help from mother nature tonight and tomorrow as well. live doppler seven with satellite, it's a quiet picture and many of you were commenting early today, the air quality was better today than it was yesterday. this from nasa earlier today,

the satellite picture showing you the smoke from the north bay fires was getting pushed off shore thanks to gusty winds that were running 20-30 mile answer ho -- miles an hour. outside of the north bay today, you had some pretty blue skies out there. however, the air quality will be changing overnight tonight. right now though, live look outside. you see good visibility but typically from the shot, we should be able to see su the. ro tower about here blinking. we are seeing a bit of haze reenter the picture over san francisco. right now the air quality is the poorest in the north bay where the firs are active outside of the thorth bnorth bay. the winds are turning calm and what it will do, it will prevent a lot of the smoke from moving off shore overnight tonight and much of that smoke will settle right back in to the bay area. so, tomorrow, that air quality will fluctuate to moderate and

poor, in the north bay, it will be unhealthy. the trend over the coming days is for the air quality to increase to good, from inland east bay to the south bay. and moderate everywhere else and then we will track a chance on rain on thursday. out there right now, 62 in san francisco, we are down to 48 in santa rosa, and 49 and 62 in antioch and 48 degrees. the winds are cooperating for firefighters on the front lines in the north bay. they are generally calm in the north bay right now and elsewhere, across the region, generally, about less than ten miles per hour at the hour. future tracker winds will show you the next 24 hours. the winds are generally light by 7:00 tomorrow morning. winds are away from the coast. generally less than ten miles an hour. that's the theme in to the afternoon on sunday. so, as we take a look at overnight tonight. here's the call. we will have the haze over many of our cities overnight. 51 the overnight, and dropped to 50 in san jose, cool spots like

bay, the death toll has risen to 40 and officials are fearing that it will keep g growing. you could see the current number of acres burned and the ka containment levels for each of the fires. it's reported that the crews expanded many containment lines today. firefighters are doing all they can to protect homes and help people escape the fire. we have more. >> a bunch of cal fire choppers circled. trying so taif the homes during extreme fire conditions. all residents can do is wait behind the lines. >> anxious, very anxious. >> early this morning, embett

embetter -- embers ignited fires and forced evacuations. >> it's been a tough few days back here. and i can see right now, that it's not even close to being over. >> we found two homes destroyed on castle road and one on half moon street. someone managed to save these classic cars, by pushing them out of a grararage. we shared images with a man who choked up, relieved that his place made it. not everyone is in the clear. the front of the fire is burning northeast of the town. that black smoke that you are looking attitu ing at firefight could be a structure. there's hot spots all around and they are trying to contain them. >> this is not a run, it a marathon. after that, the active firefight is done, there will be a lot of hazards and downed pa eed power.

embers, flying embers likely caught two homes on castle road on fire. early this morning around 5:00 a.m. did not take long for the homes to be destroyed. firefighters did what they could to save them. but with little look. protecting surrounding homes became the priority here. >> windy conditions are not helped one bit. big flames continue to rage on two hills. cal fire said it planned to hit the fire hard. our heart goes out to the homeowners who lost their homes here. tomorrow, a newly opened evacuation center in mill valley will be a full scale shelter with cots for over 400 people to sleep in. red cross volunteers brought in tables, supplies and games for

kids to make them feel more comfortable. hot meals and medical attention are available. >> to good news about animals that were missing after the fire. this dog stayed behind as his fame ran to guard the goats on the property. his family's home burned to the ground but animals were safe. there was nowhere to be found the dogs and the goats. they were found safe in the neighborhood and this time, he will come with the eevacuation sites. you can text to donate $10 to the red cross. text the word, red cross, 9-0-9-9-9. and you can call your number on the screen to volunteer. we will be right back.

you now, to a reunion, with a crew and the family that they rescued. the father of the family made a difficult decision. we have the story. >> reporter: this was the first time since the rescue that the chp helicopter crew members saw pepe and graciallo, jesse and his grandparents. as the fire raced through the neighborhood, they left their home just before it burned to the ground. >> and all i can see was flames like -- 15, 20 feet high. >> reporter: they drove up to a field along the mountain, that's

when the pilot yousaw them, the landed the chopper. >> he said we can take four people and he decided who would go. a selfless act on his part. >> i said, please take my family. i will be here, i will be all right. >> i was crying. my son, my mom. everyone was crying. >> he tried hard to not show his fear. but the flames were close. >> i called my daughter, and i said, if i don't see you again, remember, i love you. that was it. >> reporter: his courage and selflessness did not go unnoticed. >> esshe is saying, take my fam and go. kudos to him, what a guy. >> i told him we were coming back and i don't think he believed us. >> reporter: the officer meant what he said, later that night, they found him and picked him up. >> i was like, nervous when he

didn't come. but he came. >> when i saw him again, i was so happy. and saying thanks god for saving his life. >> i want to thank these two officers, because if it was not for them, i would not be alive right now. >> reporter: this family lives in a house on a ranch where he works and they lost everything. the held had kopter crew, also heroes that night. that night, they made 26 rescues in seven hours. abc 7 news. >> well the wind is finally dying down. starting to cooperate with firefightering efforts and let's hope we get better. >> yes, with the winds on the lighter side. containment numbers will continue to rise.
