tonight, one week after the flames first erupted, frefighters are working once more tlout through the night as they try to gain the upper hand on the massive fires in the north bay that have changed so many lives this week. thanks for joining us. >> let's get you caught up on the latest this hour. containment on the 40,000 acre nuns fire jumped from 45 tonight. containment grew on all the other fires, too. mandatory evacuations have been lifted on three areas, the schools open for the first time since the fire. also tomorrow a new center for assistance opens at the napa

county health and human services building. smoke has been hovering over sonoma valley all day. residents have been keeping a close eye on the flames. we're live in kenwood with the latest. >> reporter: now that it's dark and cool, the flames have gone down significantly but it's still going to be a sleepless night for at least one family who's chosen to stay for now? >> they're not defending something that's indefensiblnde. >> residents remain on edge. >> we had to clear this stuff from the house. >> mike wain has been watching from his house. >> you never lay your eye off it. >> his son jeff drove from n from colorado for moral support and is defying evacuation orders. >> they can tell us to leave but

i'm not leaving until i see flames come down the hill. >> smoke has been hovering over hood mountain all day. >> i hooer up, here in sugarloaf ridge state park are hazards everywhere, firefighters cut up this tree that toppled in the middle of the row. >> reporter: while the flames haven't moved up, but they know the wind can shift everything. they lost two barnes last week. >> this was my shop. >> the last thing they want is for their home to go too but they know in the end their safety comes first. >> if they shift, we'll leave. lives are not replaceable. >> reporter: well what's been comforting is that containment is o this fire has gone up from 25 to 40%. residents hoping for more progress tomorrow.

way above the hills of napa sunday night. >> this is the tubbs fire burning behind me. firefighters have been fighting hot spots from it all day long and they have made progress. >> that is especially evident in calistoga where signs welcome families home. they return loaded down with donated food and water. others are still threatened, earlier sunday dense fire crackled in the hills overlooking highway 29. helicopters dropped loads of water trying to stop the flames. ed hudson watched from below. >> the whole thing is a bit sur reel. >> he's one of many worried about the wine economy. wineries are closed and they don't know when they'll work again. >> every day has been full of

week. >> the winds cooperating with firefighters that is why we see those containment numbers continue to rise and with winds light tonight we're likely to see them contain them more. live doppler 7 is quiet. the wind look, less than 3 miles per hour. and the future weather trend by 4:00 monday morning, similar story. by 9:00 we see the winds are calm in some spots and even into the afternoon, the wins will not be a big issue, factoring between 4 and 9 miles per hour. the winds are cooperating in the next 24 hours and look at the horizon, thursday to friday we are tracking a chance of rain. so the storm impact scale, it's a one, light rain but it will likely fall over the fires in the north bay. let's look at the timing in the

full accue weather forecast. >> we're learning more about two of the 22 victims killed. 82-year-old doctor carmen colleen mcreynolds practiced medicine for years. sheriff deputies said she made it to her car but could not escape her garage. this is 71-year-old daniel south erd, his son described his dad as being, quote, my best friend. he saids he'll miss his father every day. zble. about 2,000 people are still under evacuation ordereds because of the redwood fire, it's being blamed for 8 deaths and has burned nearly 36,000 acres and containment reached 45%. a local assistant center will open on tuesday.

it'll be open from 10:00 until 7:00 inside the gym atmin doe see know community college. it will replace lost documents, officials will also be on hand from social security. victims can even receive counseling. firefighters say they have made significant progress bat ling the sulfur fire. near 2,200 acres have burned and containment grew to 80% tonight. the fires have destroyed 425 homes. >> as evacuations are lifted you need to be aware of important safety precautions as you head home. wear stur dy shoes, be mindful of hazardous chemicals. before turning your propane

new at 11:00, firefighters in fairfield have stopped a three alarm brush fire from spreading. it started just after 10:00 tonight just south of i-80 no homes were threatened and that fire is now under control. we first told you about a heart breaking letter written by a 9:00-year-old who lost his home last night. >> tonight after hearing about it the a's are planning a special surprise for a little boy who's had a rough week. >> reporter: before fire destroyed their home, lauren

to rebuild. >> everyone's situations is different so everyone's timetable is going to be different. >> reporter: some are leaning on their families for a place to stay while others take shelters at centers. joen has been evacuated for six days. meanwhile among the firefighters she's putting her comfort dogs to use. >> it's doing what it's supposed to do. >> reporter: another glimmer of hope in the most unexpected places. on thursday when the merced city fire department found this american flag. >> knocked over laying in a tree that had burned up. >> reporter: surrounded by blackaned homes the flag was untouched until this moment when the team put it all to see. >> to see the red, white and blue fly with just a blackened landscape behind it was

powerful. >> several days later that flag still flying high behind me. in fountain grove, abc 7 news. all kinds of animals have been affected. napa valley evacuating a tortoise. >> i hear three words firefighter in north bay want to hear, calmer winds, rain. >> absolutely. are we going to get any of those? >> we have the calm winds sfwonts that will continue for tomorrow as well and yes, we are tracking a chance of rain not only in the north bay where they need it but area wide and late in the week. live doppler 7 showing you the active scan going around and right now it is a calm picture.

outside tonight, a live look from the east bay hills. you can see the tower blinking, meaning visibility is rather good at the hour and the air quality will be improving in the coming days. look at the next four days, in the north bay around the fires monday and tuesday, the air quality will be poor but the trend, especially wednesday and into thursday is that area wide by thursday, we have good air quality no matter where you live. that coincides with a chance of rain coming through to clean out our atmosphere of the smoke. we've fallen back into the 50s and 60ss. we're holding at 54 in napa, jose at 64. so the call tonight over the next 12 hours, temperatures in most spots will fall back into the 40s we'll have a couple cool

locations, santa rosa and cloverdale will be chilly in the 30s. by 2:00 monday afternoon you can see area wide the winds remain on the light side, less than 10 miles per hour, which is certainly what firefighters want to hear tai as they battle these active fires. once again, monday is a day, similar temperature wise to where we were this afternoon, about 10 degrees above 89 in gloecoverdale. we bring in the storm impact scale, we rank our storms from 1 to 5 to give you a better idea what to expect, and we are just at the start of storm season. storms typically are weaker so a light storm, a one coming thursday into friday morning. higher humidity levels come with

it, that's good for firefighters. likely a quarter of an inch if not more. 9:00 in the morning on thursday, the green on your screen, that's the rain. the darker the clor the heavier the rain. as we go through early afternoon on thursday, the rain becomes more widespread and we're watching late thursday into early friday that's when the north bay has the best chance of shower. certainly necessary rain about a quarter of an inch in the north bay, less as you go further south. the seven day forecast, winds light midweek, and thursday to friday morning we track the rain moving in. you can track the rain with the accue weather app as we get closer to the event. >>

welcome back, we want to bring you another update now on the north bay fires that are still raging tonight. containment is growing, though. sky 7 was over the nuns fire in sonoma county. it has now burned 48,000 acres but containment is up from 25% this morning to 40% tonight. today mandatory evacuations were

lifted in calistoga, parts of the mark west area and se will know county. >> other fires have higher containment numbers, 60% for the tubbs fire, 65% for the atlas and cal fire reports they're up on lake county. firefighters report getting the upper hand on fires -- >> lo val valley and wood valley, residents were forced to leave there yesterday. >> we surveyed the damage of beautiful homes reduced to rubble in minutes. we found this large home off lo vn val valley in ruins. amid the ashes, most ridge top homes were saved. fire krus hit two blazes hard,

tonight, we're hearing about an incredible story of survival at a vineyard in napa, last sunday night. >> we spoke with the winery's owner who had to take extreme measures to stay safe. >> reporter: video shows what ed says was a ring of fire. >> it was like a solid envelope of just fire. and moving at a very fast pace. >> he's the owner of a winery he was at the vineyard to pick

graps on sunday night when they notice it had firing burning on atlas peak. they raced down the hill banging on doors, a couple firefighters arrived but with bad news, they were surrounded with no way out. >> i said what's your plan? he gave us a plan and his plan was to lay flat in the open area and let the fire pass over top. >> reporter: snyder sai said some people panicked overs prayed. they saw red and blue lights. it was two helicopters coming to rescue them off the burning mountain. he was amazed to see them risk their lives. >> at one point he lost elevation and went down into the flames and shot forward through the flames and was out and going right and left, full circle. >> the chp made several trips until everyone was evacuated.
