and good morning. it is 4:00 a.m. thousands of families displaced as wildfires continue to burn in the north bay. >> firefighters are still working to contain this fire in sonoma county. live team coverage as our breaking news continues. good morning. it is monday, october 16. >> we are on a little early in order to bring you extended coverage of the north bay wildfires. as you can see natasha is off today, so is mike. lisa argent filling in for mike. we've been wondering what will happen with the winds this morning and also that rain that we'll get later this week. that's right. today is the very last warm day. we'll see temperatures well above average. the winds have dialed back. we'll be looking at conditions changing dramatically, reggie, like you said, cooler air and the possibility of rain. air quality now poor in the north bay and we're looking at better air quality elsewhere

throughout the day. we're warmer. four to five degrees warmer and temperatures right now from the low 50s in the south bay, 62 in san francisco with 50 in livermore. planning your day just as warm as yesterday with mid-80s inland. alexis? taking a look at one of many closures that we still have in the north bay due to the fires. 101 in santa rosa. all those on and off ramps continue to be closed. mendocino river road, also airport drive is closed. off of 101. so just be aware of that. tough to get through there. we do have three left lanes just before you get to the harrison exit. scheduled until 5:30 for bridge maintenance. looks like they may be wrapping that up early. we'll take a look at drive times up next. >> and here are the latest numbers on the fires that continue to burn this morning in the north bay. >> containment has grown in nearly all the major fires including lake and mendocino

counties. the 48,000 nuns fire is now 40% contained. >> cal fire expects full containment by friday. mandatory evacuations have been lifted in three more areas including calistoga. several schools reopened today for the first time since the fires and the number of people killed statewide is at 40. one of the areas of concern. >> amy hollyfield is live in ken wood. >> reporter: jessica, good morning. on our way in we didn't see any flames or that orange glow that the fire gives off t iso overnight. here in kenwood people are watching hood mountain where the fire is burning. the residents who are still here and ignoring evacuation orders. one man tells us he's not exactly sleeping well at night. he is nervous but he's not

leaving. >> never let your eye off it. we've been up with very little sleep the last week. >> i mean, they can tell us to leave, but i'm not going to leave until i see flames coming down that hill. >> reporter: there has been a lot of smoke coming out of hood mountain, but firefighters have been able to keep fire from the area. everyone knows, though, a shift in the wind could shift everything, so no one is letting their guard down quite yet. reporting live, amy hollyfield. and this morning many calistoga residents are home or headed back there soon. a steady line of cars poured into the city after officials lifted the evacuation from the tubbs fire at 2:00 yesterday afternoon. the fire is still an ominous sight but the hope is the danger is over. firefighters say unless something changes they do think we're going to start seeing some containment percentages getting even higher and higher every day from now on. right now the tubbs fire is 60%

contained after burning more than 44,000 acres. >> an assistance center will open at 9:00 a.m. this morning. >> the center first opened saturday in the old "press democrat" building on mendocino avenue. those people stood in line two hours to get help from local, state, and federal agencies. there's no limit on how long it will take to rebuild. >> keep in mind everyone's situation is different. everyone's timetable will be different. >> the assistance center can help from replacing, it is open from 9:00 a.m. you can register for disaster relief on our abc news app. >> napa county is opening its own assistance center. federal, state, and local disaster assistance resources including financial help. it will be in the an conference

center on napa valley corporate drive open from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 to 5:00 on saturday and sunday. abc news was at napa high school at a town hall meeting last night. >> all the signage on the roads needs to be replaced. >> there's a lot of changes. i think we're going to be good. >> health experts urge you to wear goggles, masks, gloves, and long sleeves if you handle any debr debris. >> the hall closed its doors sunday afternoon after all the evacuees had left. the red cross center at the seminary at strawberry. officials say the shelter there does not need donations or volunteers. the santa rosa fire department

is dispelling the rumor that re-entry into coffey park is happening. re-entry has not started yet. they are working to make that happen. extremely dangerous conditions. residents will be notified through nixle. to sign up text your zip code to 888777. >> pg&e officials expect to restore power to all customers in the fire zones by late today. the utility says since the fire started last sunday about 315,000 customers lost electric power. 9% have now been restored. gas service impacted 92,000 customers. once crews are given permission to go to an area pg&e can start the assessment and repair process. >> some schools closed because of the fire and smoke are reopening today. that does include all marin county public schools.

eight districts in the south and west sonoma county, san francisco state university and cal state, east bay and concord. more schools will reopen throughout the week and for an update on the list and for a look at your school just go to abc7news.com or check out abc 7 news on our news app. good monday morning to you. checking on the upper level winds. they have continued to dial back. breezes from 5 to 15 miles an hour on top of mt. tamm, 2,200 feet. knoxville creek 2,200 feet. this is good news. it has gotten a lot slower but they're out of the direction of the north, so that means another offshore flow, another warm day with numbers right now in the 60s in san francisco. 64 in santa rosa. and as we go through the next several hours, you'll notice by noontime we're all in the 70s.

another warm afternoon with temperatures above average and by 4:00 with plenty of sun well into the 80s from fremont and hayward. near that in san francisco. we talk about the change in the weather heading our way. looking at cooler days come tuesday, thursday and friday a weak weather system coming down from the gulf of alaska will spread rain our way damping the pavement for your thursday and friday commute. we're not too bad. could go up to as much as a quarter of an inch in the north bay. this will be certainly fantastic news with temperatures only in the 60s. so overnight lows tonight bringing in more cloud cover. the numbers chilly in the 30s and 40s. we'll have smoke still with us, patchy throughout the air today and tomorrow but improving as we get through that onshore flow or as we enter into the onshore flow as soon as tomorrow. alexis? >> thanks, lisa. so far we're off to a fairly quiet start on the roads.

a live look outside at golden gate bridge and as you can see not a ton of smoke or haze this morning that came in from the east bay. i got closer to san francisco, but hopefully that air quality not too terrible for most of the week as lisa said, we have a little bit of hope for rain. definitely keeping our fingers crossed for that. a quick check of drive times, boy, we are looking great out of the central valley if you're about to grab the keys. tracy to dublin, 27 minutes. southbound 680 dublin to mission boulevard a disabled semi brocking the right lane. not slowing you down yet. that is still in the green. 101 to cupertino in the green at 15 minutes. breaking news from the live desk, two people including a child barely managed to escape a garage fire in san jose. look at this video we just got. firefighters arrived just after midnight to find the garage engulfed in flames and extending into the home on sonata way and

serenade way. vehicles in the driveway caught on fire. a quick check found nobody inside the home. the occupants had gotten out just moments before. knocked down the flames in about 30 minutes. an adult and child will stay with family in the area. we're told the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> my saddest things were my baseball collection cards, my 17 jerseys and my 10 hats. >> why the oakland a's are responding to this boy's heartbreaking letter. >> and the progress firefighters are making on the wildfires in mendocino and lake counties. >> where our new soup kitchen is open. >> we are heading to break but keep tabs on live weather and traffic where you live with abc 7 news now. ♪ ♪ every day it's getting closer ♪ ♪ going faster than a roller coaster ♪

to look at the smoke over st. helena just after 6:00 last night. here it is on your screen, silverado trail north. smoke from the fire in the hills near hood mountain regional park and sugarloaf ridge state park was drifting over the town. >> about 2,000 people are still under evacuation orders in mendocino county because of the deadly redwood fire. >> that fire is being blamed for eight deaths. the redwood fire has burned nearly 36,000 acres. containment has reached 45%. an evacuation center has closed and moved to mendocino college. >> firefighters say they've made significant progress battling the sulfur fire in lake county. all evacuation orders there have been lifted and crews are continuing damage assessments. more than 2,200 acres have burned near clear lake oaks, about 150 structures were destroyed. law enforcement is patrolling

fire areas 24 hours a day just in case of any looting. >> there are those that will take advantage of those less fortunate so we provide that public safety in an effort to combat those problems. >> another fire has burned 100 acres since it was sparked early saturday morning. there were some mandatory evacuations but those orders have been lifted. >> it's a heartbreaking letter to the oakland a's written by a 9-year-old who lost his home in santa rosa. his message went viral over the weekend. >> and now the a's planning some special surprises for that little boy. abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow has the story from santa rosa. >> reporter: before fire destroyed their home, lawrence smith and his dad would drink milkshakes. >> remember when i hit the ball over the apple tree? >> it breaks my heart that he is

plenty of games left in them because no fire can burn a father and son's love for the game. >> it's life, i guess. >> reporter: in santa rosa, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> adorable. >> bittersweet, though, to see him. obviously he lost his memorabilia, super sad, but then he is just so full of joy. >> he's just a normal kid looking to get stuff from the a's, and thank goodness they responded. that's a good thing to do. we'll be thinking about them. lisa argen, very important to see what the forecast looks like today. >> slowly some improvements and it looks like by the next 48 hours really going to be turning the corner. today still another warm day. live doppler 7, in fact, the last day with temperatures well above average. widening the perspective to show you all the cloud cover offshore. the one to the north and south and that is what will bring us rain by thursday. right now air quality in the north bay is poor and throughout the rest of the bay area

moderate. as we get into the rest of the afternoon the air quality in the inland east bay will be going down a bit and we'll continue to see the patchy smoke around the bay. so this morning we are warmer than we were yesterday morning as much as five degrees warmer in novato. at the coast we've cooled off significantly. the warmer start and that means temperatures fairly similar to where we were yesterday. 62 in the city right now. it's 58 in hayward with mid-60s in los gatos. 50 up the coast. today you can expect numbers to climb once again to near 80 degrees. half moon bay, san francisco, upper 80s in san jose, santa rosa. so very little change. into tomorrow check out the coast. an onshore low develops and we'll see numbers drop significantly in the low to mid-60s shoreline. still warm in the inland and east bay. as we get to wednesday three to five degrees in terms of temperatures inland and that will allow for the cooling trend to really reach the inland valleys and start things to really change everywhere. so the next seven days, thursday

looks to be the day we'll bring in the rain and leftover showers friday. the accuweather seven-day forecast features a couple more days of a cooling trend tomorrow into wednesday. here comes the rain with 60s thursday and friday, and looking like a pleasant weekend ahead. good morning, alexis. >> good morning, lisa, and we do have a spinout crash to talk about near sfo that has been here for almost an hour now. and it does look like a little bit of a backup. i'm going to have to check on that. crashes reported northbound 101 just past broadway. a vehicle reportedly blocking the two left lanes so chp is on the scene. they did call for an ambulance as well and just one vehicle involved there. state route 29 still closed in the calistoga area between tubbs lane and state route 175. again, this is a fire related closure. no estimate when that will reopen. we'll look at mass transit in a few minutes. alexis, thank you. a church in rohnert park is opening a soup kitchen and

this morning trending on social media is the #metoo, people sexually assaulted sharing their stories to show how widespread the story is. actress alyssa milano said if all women wrote me too as a status we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem. the movement started in response to the harvey weinstein scandal, the hollywood producer who has been accused by several women of soo sexual misconduct. deborah messing and anna pacquin have tweeted me too. >> what firefighters encountered near coffey park. this video comes from a petaluma fire department engine 9384. the department says the engine company was eventually pushed out. they were overrun by the fire.

firefighters were able to protect and save more than 20 homes. as you probably know by now many others were destroyed. a santa rosa couple who lost their home had a moment of joy so strong they were moved to tears. the robinsons thought their dog had died in the fire after they were forced to evacuate their home without him. a police officer found him in a field and another person brought him to the marin humane society. >> thank you. we thought he was gone. >> i think he's happy to see them. >> oh, such a touching moment. everyone is so happy. if they could wag their tails they would be wagging, too. >> we need to see these stories because there's been so much

loss and to see a moment of life like this is fantastic. >> what a sweet moment. okay, let's turn things over to lisa argen. lisa, follow that one. well, bringing excellent weather but not quite today. today on the warm side. wait until you see the rest of the week. it will cooperate in terms of the season and the firefighting efforts. 62 right now in san francisco. 58 in haywood with 46 in gilroy. 44 in santa rosa. today we have sunshine and warm temperatures. as you look at the next several days, today is the warmest day of the week. 80 in the city. we drop to 63 tomorrow. 59 on wednesday and the inland and east bay another 48 hours before you see that any significant change comes your way. but beyond that everyone is going to look to be very comfortable come the rest of the week. the onshore flow tomorrow. today a warm day above average. you may need the jacket in the morning. the sunglasses in the afternoon. alexis? >> taking a look at the bay

right now with abc 7 news now. we have weather and traffic throughout the entire break, so you are in the know as you begin your day. stay with us. breaking news in napa county where two wildfires have erupted tonight. we're tracking another fire right now, this one in calistoga. >> at first there was nothing and then we saw the smoke. and then slowly we saw all the flames coming up over the mountain. >> fire is everywhere. it has made a hard push into santa rosa. we have people here who are in shock, and then we also have people here who have snapped into action. >> let me get her feet. >> all around me there are emergency responders from different agencies. all of a sudden you see smoke start to billow out from under the house. >> they saved my house. these guys are just spectacular. >> hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of homes gone. this is just very, very sad to see. >> it's mother nature at her worst, i guess. >> this fire is advancing. it is growing right now. >> sadly we have found another

neighborhood that has been completely wiped out. >> the sun is setting on a day of utter devastation. >> that fire came here like a speeding train sunday night. >> more than half of it is gone, just reduced to burned, charred rubble. >> along with grief and fear comes uncertainty. >> but there's progress today. >> settled down overnight, that gave us a big opportunity to catch up. >> it looks horrible now but this is really a beautiful spot. it will grow back and our homes will come back and we'll remember this day forever. >> it just breaks your heart, you know. we'll be there again. we'll make it better. >> one lady told us with tears streaming down her face, she said we'll rebuild. >> we have continued receiving donations from the time we opened. >> we all pulled together. >> there areith big hearts. >> those who dropped their own lives and rushed in to volunteer, they are true heroes. >> and there's still a lot of work ahead.

hi, good morning. it is monday, october 16th. natasha and mike are off today. >> it's 4:30. calmer winds definitely helping things out. we love to see the percentages go up with containment. lisa argen is here to tell us about the rain chances. >> they will increase by the end of the week. the wind, though they're calm, they're from that offshore component so that means warm today at the beaches. in fact, yesterday was 85 half moon bay. we're starting out warmer today in hayward, mountain view and santa rosa. 50 in campbell. 50 in sunnyvale and we'll look for the temperatures to be milder this morning in san francisco. 60s in bodega bay. air quality in some
