hi, good morning. it is monday, october 16th. natasha and mike are off today. >> it's 4:30. calmer winds definitely helping things out. we love to see the percentages go up with containment. lisa argen is here to tell us about the rain chances. >> they will increase by the end of the week. the wind, though they're calm, they're from that offshore component so that means warm today at the beaches. in fact, yesterday was 85 half moon bay. we're starting out warmer today in hayward, mountain view and santa rosa. 50 in campbell. 50 in sunnyvale and we'll look for the temperatures to be milder this morning in san francisco. 60s in bodega bay. air quality in some areas not bad but it will continue to be

areas of patchy smoke today. the santa clara valley and each and every day that improves as well as the cooler weather and stronger onshore push. we're talking 40s and 50s right now. the numbers will be in the 70s and 80s with hazy sunshine today. mid-80s for the warm spots and even near 80 at our coast and, yes, we have rain to talk about in our extended outlook. alexis? it is a spare the air day. once again, if you can car-pool, can use mass transit, that is highly recommended. taking you up to the north bay looking at some of the fire-related closures, 101 is fully open in both directions but we do have on and off ramps closed. hopper, bicentennial, you will not be able to use those exits so just keep that in mind that heavy law enforcement presence in the area there as well and then take a look at golden gate bridge. very light volumes this early hour. i'm not seeing too much smoke

and haze. enjoy it while it lasts. we will likely have some issues as we get further into the day. starting to see things ramp up out of the central valley. that's up next. alexis, thank you. now back to the north bay fires still raging this morning. containment is growing. the nuns fire in sonoma county now 40% contained. that fire has burned more than 48,000 acres. >> cal fire reports increased containment on the fires in lake and mendocino counties. meanwhile, the tubbs fire is 60% contained and 65% for the atlas fire. >> the big area of concern, sonoma valley. >> and reporter amy hollyfield is live in kenwood this morning. amy? >> reporter: hi, jessica. all the smoke coming out of mt. hood is lingering here in kenwood. the smell is strong this morning and over the weekend had a heavy presence here. the residents who are still here are watching the situation closely.

we met with a man who refuses to evacuate. he says he's lived here long enough to know. it's just not time to go yet. >> i've done it twice and it was pointless. this time i think it's pointless. my wife is gone. makes her nervous. it affects every one of us differently. >> reporter: he says if he sees the flames headed this way he will go. everyone knows a shift in the wind could always change things. as of now we don't see flames or that orange glow. it looks like the fire lay down overnight. reporting live in kenwood, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> all right, amy, thank you. we are learning more about two of the 22 people killed by the fire in sonoma county. 82-year-old dr. car men colleen mcreynolds had practiced medicine in santa rosa for many years. sheriff's deputies say she made it into her car but was unable to escape from her burning

garage. and here now a picture of 71-year-old daniel southard, killed when the fire struck one week ago. his son derrick describes his dad as being, quote, my best friend. derrick says he will miss his father every single day. >> firefighters have asked over and over do not fly your drones in the fire-affected airports and a man has been cited for flying a drone which is one of the bases where they are flying to help fight the fires. nester rodriguez told police he didn't know that it was illegal to fly there. he was issued a citation to appear in court for impeding personnel. the drone held up the firefighting operations for ten minutes and endangered lives. on top of fighting fires they're also fighting rumors that undocumented immigrants will be rounded up at evacuation centers. they are not getting help they

need out of fear they could be deported. they say it's possible the missing person's list because they are afraid to speak up. >> they are humans that have been affected by fire. they are traveling far away from the coast sleeping in their cars with their children. we need them to not be afraid. >> we cannot stress this enough. if you go to an assistance center or evacuation center you will get help no questions asked. >> cal fire is thanking all of its fire partners that came to the state during the greatest time of need. cal fire shared this on twitter that showed 17 states plus help from australia offered mutual aid to assist in the firefighting efforts. in total cal fire says 266 fire engines, 79 fire crews, and 56 additional personnel came to california to help put out flames.

safety precautions going home. >> the biggest tips, wear sturdy shoes as you step over any possible debris. any plastic or metals that have burned and before turning on your propane tanks, inspect them. >> if you lost power don't turn your electricity back on unless all your appliances are turned off first and you have thoroughly inspected your home and electric meter for any fire damage. make sure to clean and sanitize anything that has come in contact with ash. temperatures milder for you than yesterday due to all that heat. it was a warm one with mainly 80s and a few 90s.

60 in antioch. mid-40s up in santa rosa. forecast today calls for another warm day with a light offshore flow. winds not much of a factor. 80 in san francisco so the onshore flow is cut off again today. 80 half moon bay. 86 in petaluma. 88 in san jose. but by tomorrow we'll back into the 60s from sausalito to half moon bay and some 70s. that's about ten degrees cooler in oakland for you tomorrow. still warm in our inland east bay but by wednesday you're pulling back into the upper 70s as well in concord and livermore. so as we get to thursday clouds and some showers will head our way by about 9:00 in the north bay and then they'll spread throughout the bay area through the overnight. your friday morning commute looks to be on the soggy side. and amounts, well, we should see a little bit everywhere. in fact, even in the south

bay, .05, up to a tenth in novato and maybe .2 calistoga. not enough but it will impact the fire. before this looking at the nice, cool onshore flow that will allow for those winds to bring in more relative humidity. so today another day with low relative humidity, temperatures higher than average and some smoky skies. tonight back into the 30s, 40s, and 50s. alexis is here with your monday morning commute. we do still have a lot of road closures in the north bay with all of the fires and these are all fluid situations. i am tweeting out any current road closures, state route 29 is one of those on this calistoga area from about tubbs lane up to 75. really don't know when they'll be reopen. fluid, constantly changing. and we're doing our best this morning.

southbound 680 slowly starting to fill in. tapping their brakes. some light volume still this morning and a quick check of drive times, highway 4 to the maze wide open, just 17 minutes. bay bridge, some road work on the upper deck until 5:30 this morning. they've started picking that up. san francisco to sfo you're in the green at nine minutes. this is breaking news making national headlines, an oil worker is missing and at least seven people have been injured after a big rig explosion in louisiana lake. one of the injured is in critical or serious condition and one of them is said to be injured but in stable condition. no deaths have been reported. into lake pontchartrain near new orleans. a large fireball.

this is breaking news out of napa just coming in. pg&e with downed power lines after a car crashed, happened just after midnight on california boulevard. >> industrial way backed away but then more wires got stuck on top of the big rig and more were pulled down, but because of all the help pg&e is providing in

the napa area and all the wildfires raging right now, crews were able to get out there pretty quickly and luckily no one was seriously hurt. the area is so blocked off. >> we're going to [ bleep ] die. we have to get out of here. >> the roads are on fire. push through. push through the gate. we cannot [ bleep ] die. >> i'm amazed they kept rolling throughout this whole thing. roommates about 15 miles northeast in yuba county. made a dramatic escape. one of the two men said it was the scariest three minutes of his life. sky map 7 on sky 7 gives us a look at where exactly part of

the nuns fire was burning around 6:00 last night, this feature geo locates and local landmarks, you can see cougar lane, this is in a remote area near the regional park and sugarloaf at the sonoma and napa county lines. our camera spotted flames shooting high into the sky and a lot of smoke. >> when you see that view, though, it looks so overwhelming. this morning we are hearing about an incredible story of survival at a vineyard in napa last sunday night. >> reporter alyssa harrington spoke with the owner who had to take extreme measures to stay safe. >> reporter: a ring of fire at the top. >> it was like a solid ring of fire and moving at a very fast space. >> reporter: the owner of beau

vineyard winery. he was with employees to pick grapes for the harvest when they noticed fire burning on atlas peak about a half mile away. his crew raced down the hill banging on neighbors' doors. a couple of firefighters did arrive but came with bad news. they were surrounded with no way out. >> i said what's your plan and he gave us a plan, and it was to lay flat in this open area and just let the fire pass over the top. >> through the smoke they saw red and blue lights. it was two california highway patrol helicopters coming to rescue them off the burning mountain. snyder was amazed to see them risk their lives. >> at one point he lost elevation and went down into the flames and he actually shot forward through the flames and then went out going right, going left, going full circle. >> reporter: chp made several trips until everyone was safely

evacuated. snyder calls them heroes. in napa alyssa harrington, abc 7 news. >> an incredible story. a grass fire caused concern in novato on sunday. abc 7 news was romar court and 4th street. no homes damaged here but they were threatened. some residents had to evacuate for a short time. the marin county fire chief said the bay area cannot afford to have another big fire. >> we put a big hit on it early and novato fire did a fantastic job, jumped on this thing very quickly, provided additional resources for many agencies in marin county. >> fire officials say about five acres burned, no injuries here. the cause is still under investigation. when evacuees from mendocino county go home, they will likely find a lot of spoiled food because of power outages. and here is where you can take it. people can drop off spoiled food and other household waste today at old redwood valley school and potter valley rodeo grounds. according to the mendocino

county sheriff's office, it is open from noon until 5:00. and we cannot stress that enough. if you have lost power, you're watching us and you're returning home after the wildfires, you do want to get rid of all of that. it is 4:48 now. we'll check in with the forecast and lisa argen. hi, lisa. good morning to you. we are still looking at better news in terms of the weather. today not quite. we still have the light winds in the upper elevations coming from an offshore component. that will keep us warm. in fact, warmer than we want to be for this time of year. those couple of systems linking together and bringing us some rain by thursday. it's in the low 60s in san francisco. 54 in fremont. good morning, napa. 47 for you. air quality today is poor. you'll notice in the next couple of days it improved. rain arriving will be much, much better. very light anywhere from 2 to 4 miles an hour. notice the direction from the

north and then it begins to switch around tomorrow. we're going to have calm winds both today and tomorrow but the direction will bring in more relative humidity as we get into tuesday, tuesday afternoon, and that will increase and allow for more moisture and additional aid with the firefighters. so in the south bay today spare the air alert, upper 80s in san jose. 83 in redwood city. very similar to yesterday with 80 downtown. mid-70s daly city. in the north bay you're ten degrees above average. in observing,akland, 80 degrees. you head inland a couple days here before you get the relief. but as we check out our accuweather seven-day forecast an offshore flow. the warmest day of the week today. cooler at the coast tomorrow. and then that cooling spreads around the bay on wednesday. by thursday and friday we're getting our heads wet, and we have a pleasant and dry weekend

ahead. alexis, what's going on? >> okay. we still have a lot of road closures in the north bay as you would imagine. between vichy avenue and wooden, both sides of the roadway are fully closed and no estimate on any of those roadways reopening. a little bit of good news here with smart train. sonoma-marin area rail transit back at a full schedule today. they will be serving all stations and they have extended free train service all the way through wednesday this week. so that is a good option to get around in the north bay with all of these road closures. and a quick check outside, the richmond side of the bridge. i saw probably about 30 to 40 law enforcement vehicles heading westbound here across the bridge. i am guessing they are going to help out in the north bay. we don't have any incidents reported on the bridge. next traffic update just before 5:00. residents affected by the fires are showing their

resilience. the statement, the love in the air is thicker than the smoke has been seen around sonoma county. >> i love that saying and marin loves it, too. it tweeted out photos saying we found the statement to be true while serving in sonoma this past week. we felt the love and it was appreciated. the bottom portion shows one of the only parts of the paradise ridge winery in santa rosa that was left standing after the flames tore through. tough to look at but you can see that love sign. >> a lot of people sharing those photos. menlo park facebook delivered 5,000 meals to the napa county salvation army. the social media giant reached out on friday after the organization posted on its facebook page that it needed some help. facebook vowed to continue sending 5,000 meals three times a week as long as it's needed. the next delivery is set for wednesday. there are so many ways to help but here is an easy one you can do. donate $10 to the red cross by just texting red cross to the number 90999. you can also call the number on

evacuating an 85-year-old 200-pound tortoise. it took four people to lift that tortoise into a wheelbarrow rescued from a property that had limited road access. >> i'm glad it's safe. good morning, everyone. we are starting out with some warmer temperatures this morning due to the heat we had yesterday. we are well into the 80s on the coast and san francisco another warm day today at 62. winds will be light but continue offshore. so that means today we're going to see plenty of 80s. petaluma, 86. ad then by tomorrow the onshore flow keeps mav moon bay on the cool side. by wednesday finally getting the cooling all across the bay. looking at some rain heading our way thursday and friday with much cooler temperatures. alexis? >> taking a look at the roads here this morning we did start off with a problem right around sfo. a solo vehicle spinout crash that has fully cleared from the

chp board. looks like that is totally gone. and the bay bridge commute a little bit slower than it should be this time of day. we did have the three left lanes scheduled to be closed. they have been picking up those cones ahead of schedule. we're at about 12 minutes into san francisco. normally it would only take you about 10. not terrible but some slight delays as you head into the city. next traffic update at 5:00. >> alexis, thank you. a bit of good news for those who live in the fire zone. next at 5:00 a.m. when pg&e plans to have all power restored. plus, the community in sonoma county that is once again being threatened by fire. >> this is a mandatory evacuation order. leave your homes. >> hundreds of firefighters remain on the front lines working for more than 24 hours straight. >> the winds were blowing 30, 40 miles an hour. and we were just trying to stay
