>> people with big hearts. >> we're happy to be safe. >> i have my mom's hat, my daughter's cat. i'm thankful we still -- there's a lot of people that aren't as fortunate. i'm happy to be going home. >> reporter: not everything is open. you can see the flames threatening the robert mundavi winery. this fire is 40% contained. cal fire will give us an update around 7:00 this morning. it is 6:01 on this monday, october 16. >> mike and natasha are off today. lisa, we can see the flames on the hillside and winds just shifting around. today more smoke. >> they're still offshore and very light. the good news is they're light and we are looking at the quick

warm-up. the smoke will be variable around the bay area due to the around the bay area due to the light winds today. smoke and hazy conditions into the east bay and even into the santa clara valley. after today, boy, things are really going to improve in terms of air quality. we are warmer from concord at 50 degrees but we're cool in the north bay. numbers once again will be in the upper 80s in the south bay and near 80 at the coast. >> metering lights on pretty early today. we do have our typical delays and a couple issues on westbound 80 just getting to this point. we'll talk more about those in a few minutes. westbound 580 tracy to dublin.

pointless. my wife is gone. it makes her nervous. it affects every one of us differently. >> reporter: sonoma was threatened over the weekend but cal fire says it's looking better and they're looking at lifting evacuation orders. they tell me specifics on where is being worked out now. we should have an update soon late they are morning. reporting live in kenwood, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. amy, thank you. the marin center exhibit hall in san rafael is no longer needed for evacuees. the hall closed its door after all the evacuees had left. serving as a shelter in marin county is the red cross center at the seminary of strawberry. officials say the shelter there does not need any donations or volunteers. the santa rosa fire department

is dispelling the rumor that escorted re-entry into the hard hit coffey park neighborhood is happening now. re-entry has not started yet and they are working as soon as it's safe to do so. it is safe to return and residents will be notified through nixle. text your zip code to 888777. pg&e officials expect to restore power to all in the fire zones by late today. the utility says since the fire started last sunday about 315,000 customers lost electric power, more than 92% have been since restored. about 22,000 customers still without power. gas service was impacted, about 42,000 lost that. 17,000 still remain without gas now.

pg&e can start the assessment and repair process. some schools closed are now reopening today including all marin county public schools, eight districts, san francisco state university, and cal state east bay and concord. more schools will reopen throughout the week. check out our abc 7 news app. at the live desk this morning two people including a child barely managed to escape a garage fire in san jose. firefighters arrive to this, finding a garage engulfed in flames and extending into the home on sonata way and serenade way. vehicles in the driveway also caught fire. no one was inside at the time. the occupants had gotten out just moments before. firefighters knocked down the flames in about 30 minutes. an adult and child who were displaced, as i mentioned, they

be rage and this is a live look at oakville outside the robert mundavi winery. this is part of nuns fire. there was some containment with the nuns fire overnight, but you can see those flames inching closer and closer to the mundavi winery. you can clearly see it from highway 29, the st. helena winery -- the highway with all the wineries right alongside and we will continue to keep an update on this throughout the morning and our newscast. i also want to get to new information for fire evacuations. free trips to the just opened local assistance center. it says the city of santa rosa will offer free direct roundtrip service this morning from the

eight deaths. the redwood fire burned nearly 36,000 acres. containment reached 45%. an evacuation center has closed at ukiah high school and moved to mendocino college. now to lake county. battling the sulfur fire. all evacuation orders have been lifted. crews are continuing damage assessment right now, though. about 150 structures destroyed and law enforcement is having to patrol 24 hours a day just in case of any looting. >> there are those who will take advantage of those less fortunate. we will combat those problems. >> they're really trying to be vigilant. another fire east of clear lake oaks has burned 100 acres since it sparked early saturday morning. there were some mandatory evacuations with that one as well.

by thursday, into the evening hours we're looking at a weather front to move on in bringing scattered showers. it lasts until early friday morning creating some slow roads for your morning commute. we will look for accumulating rain everywhere. we will with 0.1 to 0.2. calistoga could see 0.2. it all looks to be good news weatherwise. your accuweather seven-day forecast, very warm at the coast. the onshore flow with the sea breeze returns tomorrow and a cooler day on wednesday with rain thursday and friday. alexis keeping track of all the traffic problems this morning. >> yeah, we have quite a few to get to. i want to head back to the south bay. northbound 101. we have a two-car crash at brokaw road north of where this traffic camera is and we have some delays building northbound through the san jose area. again, that far left lane blocked. we do have emergency crews on

the scene, but definitely heavy as you approach the area. the san mateo bridge is not looking heavy. that's because there's a crash just before you get to this point. and it's blocking the two right lanes. so four vehicles involved. we do have some injuries as well. and that is why we're only seeing a few vehicles coming through. that is definitely spilling over on to 880 as well here this morning. it's had its share of problems. a new crash near powell blocking one lane. you're up to 41 minutes. 15 across the bay bridge and southbound 101 heading to the airport, no delays there. in the green at nine minutes. >> alexis, thank you. an update on a little cat that somehow survived the north bay wildfires is up next. plus, a new look at the moments after the fire started moments after the fire started

it is 6:25. a live look in oakville outside the robert mundavi winery we've been telling you about containment and it's true. a lot of containment over the weekend and into today. we expect more but that does not mean everybody is in the clear. as you can see it is getting pretty close now to the mundavi winery. we'll continue to watch this throughout the morning.

meanwhile, back a few hours, sky 7 used its sky map 7 feature to look at the smoke over st. helena just past 6:00 last night and you can see there the silverado trail north and a lot of residential streets near the town. the smoke from the fire in the hills near hood mountain regional park and sugarloaf was drifting over the town. >> we told but the coffey park neighborhood and here is a look at what firefighters experience when they first got there. this video comes from petaluma fire department's engine 9384. the department says the engine company was eventually pushed out and overrun by fire. they were able to protect and save more than 20 homes. as you know many more than that were destroyed. >> it is tough to see that video. we do have something that hopefully will make you smile. it's an update on how a cat is doing that survived one of those north bay takes. >> take a look at milo doing pretty well all things considered. the sonoma county sheriff's

office posted this picture. they're still looking for milo's owner. they say the cat is chipped but they're having trouble locating his contact information. milo was found on adobe canyon, is being taken care of at the police department. if

alexis? a look at the roads. we do have a handful of problems working on the roads. we are looking at flashing lights. i do have a two-car crash reported. you're definitely jammed about 45 minutes between highway 4 and getting you up to the maze. a quick check of san mateo bridge, a crash just before you get to the toll plaza westbound 92. you're jammed back to 880. we'll talk about the closures. >> and speaking of the north bay the fire still raging this morning. containment, however, is growing. >> the nuns fire in sonoma county is now at 40% containment. that fire has burned more than 48,000 acres. >> cal fire reports increased containment on the fires and lake in mendocino counties.

the tubbs fire is 60% contained and 65% containment for the atlas fire. firefighters in the north bay now moving closer to the robert mundavi winery. >> it's in oakville nestled between two of the massive fires tearing through napa county where we find matt keller. matt, what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning. we've been watching this fire for about two hires now creep slowly down the hillside above the robert mundavi winery. cal fire says it is spreading at a moderate rate. more than 48,000 acres, still a lot of evacuations took place and a lot of road closures. >> i drove up here to see the winery where i work. it's very emotional.

everyone there is so concerned. the e-mails have been flying with co-workers and our bosses checking on us making sure everyone is safe. >> reporter: now there's still a long list of evacuations and road closures, some have been lifted but firefighters warn conditions are subject to change at a moment's notice and a big, you even when you're allowed back in watch out for electrical wires on the ground. always assume they're live. when we see daylight we'll see air drops with aircraft coming trying to stop the spread of the flames here from the nuns fire above highway 29 and the robert mundavi winery. matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. in sonoma, lark field, back home this morning. that's good news. road closures could change. crews were working to remove brush and debris from the roads. the county of sonoma -- the sonoma county website has an updated list. we have a list on our website abc7news.com.

unable to escape her burning garage. and here's a picture of 71-year-old daniel southard killed when the fire struck one week ago and his son describes his dad as being my best friend. derrick says he will miss his father every single day. fire officials say they're also fighting rumors that undocumented immigrants will be rounded up at evacuation centers but they say that's not true. spanish speaking victims are not getting help out of fear they could be deported and say it's possible the missing person's list is a lot longer than it should be because they're afraid to speak up. >> some are traveling farther away to the coast, sleeping in their cars with their children. we need them to not be afra >> we cannot stress this enough, there is no immigration status

check when you go to an assistance center or an evacuation shelter. you will get help no questions asked. >> cal fire is thanking everyone. they shared this picture on twitter that shows 17 states plus help from australia offering mutual aid to assist in the firefighting efforts. in total cal fire says 266 fire engines and 79 fire crews came to california to help put out those flames. a grass fire caused concern in novato on sunday. abc 7 news was at romar court and 4th street as firefighters attacked the flames. no homes were damaged but were threatened. some residents had to evacuate for a short time. the marin county fire chief says the bay area can't afford to have another big fire. >> we put a big hit on it early and novato fire did a fantastic job, jumped on this thing very quickly, provided additional resources for many agencies in marin county.

>> about fire acres burned but there were no injuries. that cause is still under investigation. >> now a live desk update. >> from abc 7 mornings. at the live des this being morning pg&e right now working to clear some downed power lines in napa after a car crashed into a power pole between stadium avenue and industrial way. a big rig was trying to avoid the wires as it backed away from the area of the crash and even more wires got stuck on top of the big rig. more wires were pulled down. it was a huge mess. but because of the help that pg&e is providing in napa for the wildfires, crews were able to respond very quickly and luckily no one was seriously hurt. at last check the area is still blocked off. >> now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. good morning to you. we are waking up to some temperatures that are more warmer than average due to yesterday's heat. the offshore flow continues. we do have lighter winds out there.

that will work in our favor in terms of not drying out the atmosphere too much more. we need to switch around and it will do that tomorrow. 44 in gilroy. winds 10 to 20 miles an hour right now, but those will decrease as well. 50 in concord. 43 in santa rosa. so winds are still offshore but they're light. as we go through the afternoon you'll notice anything from about five miles an hour to calm as we go into tomorrow and then the big factor will be the sea breeze, the higher humidity that brings that in tomorrow. today, though, little change with the numbers. 80 in the city as well as half moon bay. 88 in san jose and 87 in santa rosa. look what happens as we get into thursday. some showers arrived. they're going to last until the friday morning commute. everyone will get their heads wet. in fact, the most rain is forecasted to fall in the north bay. so anywhere from a tenth to

coverage on the north bay fires continues this morning with a new update from cal fire. >> abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is joining us live from kenwood with some good news for sonoma valley residents. hi, amy. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. i just got briefed by cal fire and, yes, they do have some good news for the sonoma valley. >> one of the best things that happened we had an inversion layer that brought some additional moisture, relative humidity that helps us out. that allows us to get some ground resources right in on top of it to do a direct attack. and also additional backfiring operation which actually additional acreage but what it does, it allows us to be able to have our containment line secured and we can call that cold is what we like to say. >> reporter: so great progress overnight. there was a lot of smoke over the weekend in this area coming off mt. hood. this did have some people here in the sonoma valley a bit

nervous but cal fire says now things are looking better. they feel they have turned the corner and are looking at possibly lifting some evacuation orders. they're still working out the specifics on that. so that is still tba but we will, of course, keep you posted. reporting live in kenwood, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. good news there. more good news we are hearing about an incredible story of survival at a vineyard in napa last sunday night and we want to show you this cell phone video. it's what ed snyder describes as a ring of fire closing in on him and about 100 other people trapped at the top of soda canyon road. >> snyder is the owner of a winery and was at a vineyard with his crew when they all saw the flames so they raced down the hills, alerted neighbors alodge t along the way. they were told the only way to do is lay it out on the ground and hope the fire would go above them.

fortunately two chp helicopters came at the right time and rescued everyone off the burning mountain. >> at one point he lost elevation and went down into the flames and he actually shot forward through the flames and went out going right, going left, going in a full circle. >> chp made several trips until they got everybody safely evacuated. amazing. >> wow, it gives me chills. in your money report as survivors of the north bay fires move into recovery mode, they do need help financially to get back on their feet. >> and so to help do that an assistance center open at 9:00 in santa rosa. the center first opened in the old "press democrat" building. a lot of people showed up. a two-hour line to get help from local, state, and federal agencies. to limit, of course, on how long it will take to rebuild. >> keep in mind everyone's situation is different so everyone's timetable will be

have a couple separate, more minor crashes near a street in that area around 92 as well. so a slow crawl. and we just got word we have a sig alert issued for westbound 80 near powell as you come through the emeryville area. te two right lanes blocked due to two separate crashes so very heavy as you try to make your way to the toll plaza. good news in the north bay as far as mass transit is concerned, smart train back on a regular schedule. free service through wednesday. golden gate transit, regular schedule resumes today. sonoma is back to regular fares today. update on the story we've been following all morning long, an oil worker missing right now and at least seven people hurt after an oil rig explosion in a louisiana lake and we have just learned that the u.s. coast guard has been called in to help look for that missing worker. no deaths have been reported. all of this happening near lake pontchartrain right near new
