now from abc 7, live breaking news. >> that breaking news is in napa county where the driver of a fire fighting water tender has been killed. he was patrolling the nuns fire as it inches closer to the winery. thanks for joining us, i'm kristen sze. abc 7 news was at the robert mundavi winery in oakville this morning. see the bright orange glow getting closer and closer as flames crept over the ridge. just two minutes from the winery is where the deadly water tender crash happened in napa county along highway 29, off oakville grade road. that's where we find abc 7 news reporter matt keller live with the story. matt? >> reporter: kristen, the water

tender is about ten feet off the road up here. this is a major scene. the chp is doing their investigation. while helicopters are dropping water on the nearby nuns fire. the fires in the north bay have been relentlessly destroying homes, businesses and lives. this morning, at about 6:45, firefighters were called to aid one of the helpers working the nuns fire. cal fire says a private water tender driver was heading down oakville grade road, about two miles west of highway 29 in napa county, when the vehicle slid off the side of the embankment and flipped over on to its top. >> this morning, we tragically lost a member of our fire fighting community. >> reporter: cal fire says they don't know why the driver went off the road, but they will look into the possibility fatigue was a factor. >> there's been no break for these firefighters since the fires erupted last sunday evening. and so, yes, people are getting tired and that is a factor that

we are aware of. >> reporter: the nuns fire where the water tender was very much needed continues to be a major battle. evacuation advisory is in place just below where the crash took place. flames could be seen slowly making their way down the hillside above the robert mundavi winery in oakville on hieway 29. that's okay for now. firefighters will make a stand at the bottom of the hill. >> we are even doing backfires and allowing the fire to come down to a controllable point where it makes it easier for us to maintain control of that fire. >> reporter: the driver's name is is not being released until his family can be notified. this is going to take hours. the investigation and also the cleanup. two tow trucks are here. wildlife officials are also checking to make sure diesel fuel is going to be cleaned up. meanwhile, i hear helicopters over here on the horizon. fighting the nuns fire. reporting life in oakville, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> math, thank you. cal fire is announcing more progress in the fire fight. containment has gone up for

several of the fires including for the two largest, atlas and tubbs. abc 7's jessica castro with a look at the latest numbers. jessica? >> hi, kristen, i have a very handy tool to show you the progress and want to start with the atlas fire, the largest wildfire burning in napa county, also burning in parts of sonoma county. this morning, it's up at 68% containment. meanwhile the tubbs fire that burned more than 4,600 acres is up to 70% containment. that is the one that hit hard in santa rosa. it has been the deadliest in the north bay. the nuns fire, this is from where matt just gave us a live report, was threatening the robert mundavi winery, decimated parts of glen ellen also in sonoma county. that's also at 50% containment. the pocket fire also in issonom county near geyserville at more than 11,000 ike eacres. 40% containment. oakmont, the smallest fire burning, only 800 acres but also in sonoma county where they have a lot to deal with, right near

the oakmont community, just 15% containment. lastly here, want to show you redwood and sulfur fires. the redwood fire in mendocino county, it's at 50% contained. burned more than 35,000 acres. and the sulfur county -- sulfur fire, i should say, in lake county, that's looking the best out of all the fires we see here on the board. that's at 85% containment. this midday. it has burned more than 2,000 acres. so, across the board, things looking better, and the sulfur one doing the best, kristen. >> all right, jessica, thank you. and we're using another tool. a new tool to get an up close look at the north bay fires. check out this video from sky map 7 on sky 7. this shows us exactly where part of the nuns fire was burning around 6:00 last night. sky map 7 gio locates streets, highways and local land marks. you can see cougar lane for example getting a lot of smoke. this is in a remote area near hood mountain regional park and sugar loaf ridge state park at the sonoma and napa county

lines. our cameras spotted flames shooting high into the sky. look at pearson road there. stern ranch road. and these flames were shooting high into the sky in that area with a lot of smoke. sonoma county residents are waiting for the go-ahead to return to their fire-ravaged neighborhoods but the air remains smoky and many will be returning amid health worries. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in is a nome th sono sonoma, word of a death relatives believe was triggered by smoke. >> reporter: the fire creating so much pain for people, kristen, as we found in the huge staging area in santa rosa at oakmont, all the teams here to frekt the sonoma valley, many headed into kenwood this morning. among them a man who says he lost someone to this fire. darren barr is volunteering this morning on the fire lines while also dealing with his grief. >> yeah, my sister lost her husband yesterday. >> reporter: he says his 27-year-old brother-in-law had an asthma attack wednesday because of all the smoke in

santa rosa and died yesterday. he leaves behind a 5-year-old son who darren is now worried about. he says he can't stop volunteering on this pumpvalley here, the cal fire trucks would have to drive an hour away for fuel. >> my uncle's shop up the road here in kenwood, my grandmother us house. these guys, they're it. they're the ones who save us. >> reporter: a new round of trucks headed out this morning to relieve those. who worked all night. even though it is so smoky here this morning, cal fire says it looks worse than it is. >> describe it, we currently have an inversion set throughout the valley to it's very smoky. but once -- as the day progresses, that will lift. and the air will become clearer and we'll be able to get a better visual on exactly where the fire. >> reporter: part of their effort today includes checking in on people who chose not to evacuate. they cleared flammables away from their homes and positioned their trucks to help if needed. >> they have been just wonderful. i can't say enough good things

about cal fire. >> reporter: cal fire says it was a good night here in sonoma valley. weather cooperated. the fire laid down. they say things are looking better. they're even planning on lifting the evacuation order in some areas. specifics, though, are still being developed. so stay with us. as we continue to cover those developments. rporting live in santa rosa, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. the santa rosa fire department is dispelling a rumor that people cannot be escorted back into coffey park. in a facebook post the department says re-entry has not yet started. they're working to make that happen just as soon as it's safe to do so. mandatory evacuation orders are still in effect due to extremely dangerous conditions. when it's safe to return, residents will be notified through nixle. to sign up, text your zip code to 888777. but in calistoga, people are returning to their homes. now that the city is no longer

under mandatory evacuation. the order was lifted from the tubbs fire yesterday afternoon. abc 7 news was there when a steady line of cars drove into calistoga. families returned from shelters loaded with donated food and water. pg&e officials announced they expect to restore power to all customers in the fire zones by late today. the utility said since the fires started last sunday, about 315,000 customers have lost power. more than 92% have since been restoreded. about 22,000 customers are still without electricity in wildfire regions. gas service has impacted about 42,000 customers, 15,000 remain without gas. once crews have been given permission by cal fire to go into a burn area, pg&&ers can start asseting and making repairs. the city of san francisco sent out this nixle alert an hour ago warning about unhealthy air quality and telling older

adults, kids and people with health and lung problems to reduce their outdoor exertion. see why. smoky haze still hanging over the city this morning. meteorologist lisa argen is tracking the winds and conditions. >> hi there, kristen, you're right. it's very smoky. here's the look from mt. tam. we have a spare the air alert. the winds are light. that's the good news with the fire fighting efforts. it's not mixing out any of this haze or smoke. we have poor air quality from the north bay, and moderate air quality elsewhere. more bit of good news, where the fires are, the winds will remain calm all day long today although they're out of the east. even better news is when we get to thursday and friday, there is measurable rain headed our way. in fact, cloverdaleclov quarter an inch. maybe a quarter an inch up in santa rosa. lesser amounts to the south. we'll talk about how much rain the rest of the bay area gets and how warm it's going to be in just a few minutes. kristen? >> lisa, thank you.

firefighters are making significant progress battling the sulfur fire in lake county. updated figures show the fire is now 85% contained. all evacuation orders have been lifted. and crews are containing -- continuing their damage assessments. the fire has charred more than 2,200 acres near clear lake oaks. law enforcement is patrolling fire areas 24 hours a day to prevent looting. and crews are also making progress on the long fire in lake county. it's now 100% contained after burning. 100 acres. the fire broke out early saturday morning briefly forcing mandatory evacuations. the order was lifted after firefighters determined the flames were burning away from homes. and in mendocino county, the redwood fire is now 50% contained after destroying nearly 3,600 acres. the fire is being blamed for eight deaths. right now about 2,000 people remain under evacuation orders. a shelter at at ukiah high school closed and moved to mendocino college. help is on the way for those who had to flee the flames.

it's located inside the press democrat building at 427 mendocino avenue. this is a one-stop shop with critical services for people who have been impacted by the fires. today, the city tweeted this picture saying it's kicking off free direct bus service to the center from three santa rosa emergency shelters. they include the finley center, the fairgrounds veterans building and elsie allen high school. bus schedules will be posted at the shelters. assistance centers also open now in napa at the health and human services building on napa valley corporate drive. the hours are 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. today through friday. and then 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on saturday and sunday. when our neighbors are in need, abc 7 shows up. this week michael finney and 7 on your side will be at north bay evacuation centers to help people affected by the wildfires. come see us tomorrow at the veterans memorial building in santa rosa. for a list of all locations, go to abc7news.com/7onyourside.

now your accuweather forecast with lisa argen. >> good morning to you, we are looking at some clouds, high clouds that are moving into the bay area and this is just obscuring the sun a little bit. we also have poor air quality out there. we talked about the spare the air alert. as we check out the satellite picture, you'll notice that we are looking at clouds offshore. this is what's going to bring us some rain as we get into the latter part of the week. good news and bad news is our temperatures are coming down but the rain doesn't look like it's going to be too, too generous. santa cruz right now, boy, it's going to be a warm one out here. we are 75, half moon bay, on the coast, just dropped to 73. we'll see temperatures in the city well above average. we're already at 70. mountain view 70. 74 in gilroy. golden great bridate bridge, cl here. offshore winds blowing on the gentle side. we want them to switch onshore, that's going to bring up the relative humidity in the days to come. 68 in santa rosa. low 70s by the delta.

also concord and livermore. another vantage point from emeryville, clouds around, haze, smelling some of the smoke. once again today, we've got a warm and dry afternoon. last one, though, because tomorrow, the sea breeze returns. it will be cooler. the rain comes in. looks like the north bay will be the best 1i7 cents of that. boy, they need it. that's the good news. the rest of us maybe a little bit. 80 today in oakland. mid 80s in palo alto. once again, we're warm, upper 80s, 10 degrees above average from santa rosa to san jose. tonight, we're still going to have smoky, hazy conditions. we'll be cool. back into the 30s and 40s in the north bay. 50s in san francisco. remember this? we bring in our storm impact scale. it's a 1. the rain is coming in to the north bay thursday night into friday morning. we're not going to see a whole lot of rain. looks like the best chance will be in the far north bay. so as we put this in motion, you'll notice that by 10:00, there's showers in santa rosa. going to take through the overnight hours to move through san francisco. then scattered showers the first

part of your friday. as we add up the amounts, we're the good news, maybe .2 in calistoga, a tenth in novato. as you get further south, you notice lesser amounts, maybe just a couple hundredths into the south bay. your accuweather seven-day forecast then, we're looking at not only temperatures on the warm side today, but even tomorrow, we're going to see that slight cooling. the sea breeze confined to the shoreline tomorrow. by wednesday, everyone cools off. then we'll be looking at highs below average with that rain really concentrated. we should stay showers in the north bay. by friday, we'll turn sunny in the afternoon and look s like a more typical october weekend. download our accuweather app and be able to track those changes as with el. >> boy, firefighters could really use that rain. lisa, thank you. right now the #metoo is trending on social media. in the wake of the hollywood harvey weinstein scandal. the movement is sweeping twitter, facebook and instagram with stories from anyone who's ever been sexually harassed or assaulted. abc 7's jessica castro is here to explain how it all started.

>> hi, kristen, yes, #metoo started off actress alyssa milano put out a call on twitter to expose the scale of sexual assault in light of allegations of rape against harvey weinstein and tweeted this saying "if you've ever been sexually assaulted or harassed, write me, too, as a reply to this tweet" and really the response has been overwhelming. tens of thousands of people have responded. i do want to show you celebrities who also responded. actresses like debra messing then look down here, anna packwin, a simple me, too. other actresses felt a little bit more, rosario dawson saying "all too pervasive, retweeting it and saying #meto saying #metoo, #togetherwerise." arts and sciences announced weinstein had been thrown out of the organization after an emergency meeting. >> i know a of people are saying
