is terrifying yet reassuring, spectacular and harrowing air assault all day long visible from highway 29 north of oakville grade, south of st. helena. it's getting smoky, hard to tell where the fire is emanating from. attack on the nuns fire occasionally even caused traffic jams along here. along this stretch of highway 29 through the heart of napa valley, six choppers, simultaneous zipped back and forth between reservoirs and burning ridge line, dumping water all day long. >> weird as this is, you feel great. >> happy they're here. >> angels of the sky. >> reporter: family watched from veranda of their home at staglin

family vineyard, just below the fire line. vigilant, hired fire crews to protect their home and property. >> three water trucks, people spraying perimeters, bulldozer made a fire break. had people stay here all week but don't feel safe anymore. >> reporter: they say the fire is creeping closer so also hired a lookout or scout stationed on highway 29 for visual updates. on the hillside itself, it's hard to see the smoke or gauge how the fire is advancing. they moved out all their furniture and artwork, not ordered to evacuate yet but ready. let me emphasize, these wineries and vineyards not in imminent

napa county when the vehicle slid off embankment and flipped on its top. >> this morning we tragically lost a member of the firefighting community. >> reporter: they don't know why he went off road but look into the possibility that fatigue is factor. >> there's been no rest so yes people are getting tired. that is a factor that we're aware of. >> reporter: the nuns fire where this water tender was very much needed continued to be major battle. evacuation advisory in place below where the -- took place. name not released. this will take hours. investigation and cleanup. and also making sure the diesel fuel is cleaned up. abc7 news. in santa rosa, crews continue their cleanup efforts. kotington mobile home park,

crews searching through debris for possible victims. evacuations won't be lifted until they can perform a thorough search. we're learning of a death that may be related to smoke from the wildfires. josh huffner died yesterday. had asthma attack due to smoke from fires and went into cardiac arrest. after four days in hospital, family says he passed away, leaving behind a five-year-old son. flames mostly gone near kenwood and glen ellen but story is far from over. residents had hoped to get home to survey the damage today. >> wayne is live with that part of our coverage. >> reporter: good afternoon. fire battles going on. battle in -- down here, in the areas where the fire has burned. battles where people are trying to get to their homes.

two san francisco police officers went to the hospital after another driver plowed into their patrol car in the sunset district. abc7 was at 37th avenue and moraga street after bmw hit the police car this morning. air bags deployed. paramedics took other driver to the hospital. all three expected to survive. colin kaepernick going on offensive, filed a grievance against the nfl claiming that team owners colluded to deny him a spot on their team because he led the movement to kneel during the national anthem. >> reporter: former san francisco 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick took a knee last season to call attention to black men kill bid the police. filed a grievance with national football league accusing all 32

jonathan. >> sky map 7 is what we call this technology, we rolled out about a month ago. allows us to see overlays on top of live images from sky7. showing us what we're looking at. right now, highway 101, one of the major arteries through santa rosa. also some destruction. can zoom in and put overlay to see what we're looking at. many cases buildings are unrecognizable. this is a way to figure out what they were. remains of mcdonald's. massive k-mart that was gutted by the flames. been a lot of interest in sky map 7. wanted to give you a closer look because it's valuable in assessing damage from the fire. so many people wondering what happened to homes and work places. flying over coffey park, one of

the hardest hit by the fire. flames ripped through and so little is left. google earth overlay shows you what it looked like a week ago. recent satellite imagery that shows houses, trees and sidewalks. take that image way, see what's left? absolute devastation. virtually nothing, a few small blocks of houses somewhere spared by flames. can bring in house number overlay. information so many of you have been asking for. dogwood drive, even numbered houses spared, odd side of the block, completely devastated. that's what sky map 7 has proven useful for and we've had interest in it because of its ability to provide you, the viewers with the information as to what happened with homes and

rainfall. high clouds right now, not rain producing. these are thin, high clouds. move on to live view from rooftop at abc7. sky over the bay, wispy and thin cirrus clouds. warm. 91 in gilroy, 72 at half moon bay. view from mt. tam. still see thin layer of haze and smoke at surface but skies above bluer than they've been. napa, 79. low to mid-80s. this is a better view of lingering haze. forecast, cooler tomorrow. sea breeze returns. winds increase ahead of cold front and good chance of showers. overnight, mostly clear skies.

good afternoon once again. now at 5:30, latest headlines on the north bay fires. containment figures are growing with nearly all at or above 50% this afternoon. >> at least 41 people have died since the fires broke out sunday, and sonoma county says just 80 people still reported missing. >> more than 16,000 pg&e

customers without electricity in sonoma and napa counties. utility is working to restore customers' power. >> some of the wildfires are still active and unpredictable. >> and authorities are not taking any chances. want to keep neighborhoods evacuated until they absolutely have to get people back in. >> reporter: today a turning point as we enter day nine of the deadliest wildfire disaster in california history. firefighters throwing everything they've got at fast-moving flames seem to have finally gained the upper hand. >> overall things are feeling optimistic for us. >> reporter: but we're not out of the woods yet. firefighters still working around the clock. some sleeping in two person tents. full containment is weeks away,

but they've started lifting evacuation orders. >> thousands able to return to homes in northern california but for so many, this is the devastation they'll find. >> i honestly drove by my street, didn't recognize where i was. >> reporter: brian's neighborhood on sunday night as home he shared with wife was reduced to ashes. he got to work. with team of volunteers, building sifters. >> couldn't make them fast enough. >> reporter: helping people who lost everything with glimmer of hope. >> i found a rock we collected on a hike. >> reporter: this is just the start. will build back. >> everyone here is builders. that's what we do. day one, start building. >> reporter: is still thick with smoke and firefighters battling active wildfire up that hill but in a bit of good news, weather is finally expected to turn and should be getting rain later this week.

maggie hurley, abc7 news. >> containment has gone up steadily, including two largest, atlas and tubbs fires. >> kristen skze is here with lok at numbers. >> we put together a graphic. atlas, largest wildfire burning in napa and parts of sonoma county. 68% contains. burned 51,000 acres. tubbs is deadliest and raged through santa rosa, 70% contained. nuns fire near the robert mondavi winery is only 50% containment and pocket fire near geyserville is 40% after charring 11,000 acres. oakmont is smallest at 800 acres burned but only 15% contained.
