the exception of several homes on carriage lin where lilian kim is reporting. >> reporter: another example of the random nature of the fire's path. this house destroyed, next door, unscathed. for those residents without a home go back to, plenty of mixed emotions. things are returning to normal, pg&e workers restoring power, should be happy but for susan, overwhelming sense of guilt. >> it's hard. we're so grateful our house is okay but to look out on our neighbor's house being gone. >> reporter: this is her view, neighbor's house a pile of rubble. more of the same devastation farther down carriage lane. >> it's surreal. ash everywhere but go inside the house and it's like we stepped

out for the day. >> reporter: lives up the hill. house could have been wiped out too but credits next door neighbor for saving it. created a fire break around their homes. >> more than hero, my treasure. but typical neighbor. anybody could do this would have. wants no credit. >> reporter: residents have time to reflect. >> suddenly work isn't all that important. just being alive, yeah. it changes you. >> reporter: returning home with a whole new respective. in larkfield wickia, lilian kim. flames are burning over the hill in oakville, a community hit hard by the fire. katie utehs is there live with look how it's recovering. >> reporter: dion, the fire is in the hills along highway 29.

car and leave. >> people in wheelchairs, some with dementia. 3 caregivers when they arrived at 2:00 a.m. >> asked if they had evacuation plan because we wanted to help out. they said no, waiting for director. >> i wasn't taught it if they do. >> says he and other employees busy rescuing people from main building. >> we did wonderful job, all those residents, just foufr us. >> no backup generators running, had to push or carry residents down stairs in the dark. statement from oakmont says all our communities are evacuation plans. we have three backup generators on site. andre and kathy say the employees couldn't find keys to busses and vans or didn't have combination or key to access the lock box that held the keys.

oakmont told us we were unable to retrieve every one of our vehicles due to fire danger and shared the quote that smoke alarm was temporarily silenced at approximately 12:30 a.m. when the fire threat wasn't posing immediate danger. says it voluntarily evacuated as it became clear it was close. >> wasn't paying attention on where it was, just get the hell out of there. >> kathy along with another relative used trailer hitch to break lock when they were locked outside. >> all i could think about was getting people to safety. >> oakmont says all 130 residents are accounted for and safe. department of social services licenses assisted living portion of the facility and has open investigation to see if they followed evacuation plan.

countless numbers of animals in danger when flames broke out, tonight hundreds safe and on the mend, thanks to agriculture students at vintage high school in napa. abc7 news reporter katie marzullo with the story. >> fire on the side and saw a couple of houses. hit us hard. >> reporter: vintage high school student described harrowing moments as she and fellow students and teacher raced out in the night to rescue animals from raging fire. >> fire on the side of the road where we were driving. >> unfazed and determined to save as many as they could. brought 250 animals back to the school's farm. >> llamas, alpacas, horses, pygmy goats. >> ag teacher and ffa adviser at vintage high. >> first five kids here with me
