creek canyon area near bear creek and dry creek roads. matt keller is live in the santa cruz mountains right now. matt, what's the update? >> reporter: good morning, jessica and reggie. i have an important update to pass along would you. i just talked with cal fire and they say currently in a rescue operation to save a firefighter who fell down a ravine, they don't know his condition, they haven't reached him yet, they're trying to get to him and get him out and see how he's doing. no word on how -- if he's injured or what they're facing, but he did fall down a ravine and they're trying to get to him. they say they are currently in a rescue operation. another person, an inmate with a hand crew team out here, was injured as well. smoke inhalation, so they're dealing with a lot of smoke. behind me you can see what they're dealing with as well with the flames in the trees and in the brush, the deep brush out here. we did talk to the cal fire aist cyst ant chief and he told us what he's facing. >> it's kind of hard to see at

night in these steep canyons, we have an access issues and as you can see behind me there's steep and rugged terrain. >> reporter: about 125 acres have burned and they say about 150 residences have been evacuated. the santa cruz sheriff's department is going door to door trying to get people out. they say there are about 150 of those homes that they are trying to get to to get out of the area those are mandatory evacuations this he also you say if anybody is in the peripheral area of this fire, las couple brass area is part of the place that has been evacuated as well. if you are not in the evacuation area but if you feel unsafe and then they're saying go ahead and leave the area. there are road blocks out here on highway 9 and also on bear creek road. you can get out on highway 9, they stopped that construction so people can leave but if you
6:02 am
do leave they are not letting people up into the area. they want to make sure they don't have to do evacuations again. you can see that the fire is sitting down in the canyon, that's the good news, they are going to wait until day night before they can get out that aircraft and put some water from above on these flames. but again, just got that update, the most serious situation going on right now, firefighters are currently in a rescue operation trying to get to a firefighter who fell down a ravine. i will continue to get updates from the assistant chief on the scene and pass those along to you. >> that is very concerning, we hope that they are able to get to him, matt. thank you. here is a look at the areas under evacuation orders this morning, deer creek road and rons road. >> also dons road, lost valley road, favre ridge and oak ridge. cal fire says if you feel like you are in danger, you need to leave immediately. an evacuation center has been opened at boulder creek elementary school in boulder creek and evacuees can go there

right now. >> we have been alerting you to these updates with push alerts through our abc 7 news app. you can download that right now for free, we will keep sending you updates on this fire and other breaking news. so we are going to turn to abc 7 meteorologist mike nicco he has been tracking the weather all morning long. >> i do have good news. everybody, hi. as we look at live doppler 7 you can see the winds are still calm, the temperatures still pretty warm at 70 degrees up around 1600 feet and the relative humidity still pretty dry at 26%. it gives you an idea of what matt talked about, they're rescues that firefighter how steep that terrain is and how this is a chimney fire right now, staying within the valley but climbing up the walls as the heat rises and makes the other vegetation susceptible to fire. 4:00 we will be 76 with a north wind at 11, 7:00 a northwest wind and 67 degrees. so not ideal as this morning but nothing like the north bay bend through. >> that certainly is good news. i want to take you there on our

traffic maps as well because we do have road closures. we did just hear from matt that obviously we have evacuations in the area. highway 17 road work should be done by 6:30 this morning, we just had a lane down on the southbound side south of the summit and state route 9 actually picked up that construction ahead of schedule this morning once those fires broke out and they realized people were trying to get out of the area. bear creek is closed at deer creek, hawk ridge and state route 9. if they get any more confirmed information from chp i will pass that along. now to the very latest on the into irs that continue to burn in the north bay. there is progress in mendocino and lake counties, the red wood fire now 55% contained and the sulphur fire 90% contained. >> the atlas fire is 70% contained and the tubbs fire is 75% contained. the nuns fire at 53 and the pocket fire at 45% contained. flames are still burning, though, in oakville, a community

update to our breaking news in the santa cruz mountains, our colleague, matt keller, just tweeting out moments ago that firefighters have found the injured firefighter who fell down a ravine about 50 feet. it does not sound like he has critical injuries so that is very good news. again, they were able to find him, of course, this fire continues to burn there. about 125 acres the last time that we checked in and they are evacuating people. more from him in just a few minutes. right now we want to get a check of our weather. let's check in with mike nico. mike, you said that the winds will really help out. there's virtually none out there in the santa cruz mountains. >> there is virtually none right now even at the highest elevations but the temperatures are a little warmer out there. the winds will pick up out of the northwest at 11 miles per hour to conditions will deteriorate, but i repeat this, this is not going to be a repeat of what happened in the north bay. let's take a look at our visibility back at home, 5 in half-moon bay, clouds hugging the coast there, 8 napa, 6

about 125 acres at last check. there are mandatory evacuations in the area. a recent halloween we just got, we knew a firefighter fell down a ravine, seems that firefighter has minor injuries. here is a tweet from matt keller saying firefighters found the injured firefighter. he had a broken wrist and cuts to his face after falling down the ravine, but they are bringing him out now. again, this fire continues to burn, there are some road closures in the area and there are evacuations. there are about 150 people evacuated at last check firefighters told us about 100 homes in the area are threatened. this is the las cumbres area what matt keller has been telling us from the ground and these flames still raging this morning. they are hoping to get aerial support when the sun comes up. more on that in a few minutes. let's check in with what's happening with the other fires including in mendocino county, this he have that one 55% contained, the red wood valley fire has burned nearly 36,000

get the rain season. we will have a chance of rain thursday into friday, not a great amount of rain but a chance, it will definitely bring cooler conditions but it's not going to green things up and stop the fire season. here is a look at san rafael, look how clean that air looks from 101 looking outbound right now. our warmest day until we get to sunday or monday. tonight steady lows, mainly cloudy skies, a lot like this morning just a little cloudier and that chance of rain still coming. increasing clouds from the south, though, the warm air injection out ahead of a cold front. warm today even with the lack of sunshine compared to yesterday. first front will fizzle out to the north but opens the door to the front bringing rain in. lake and mendocino counties 7:00, northwest corner sonoma county light rain. lowest color the lightest green means the lightest amount of rain. no yellows, no oranges, no reds not expecting a lot out of this system. by midnight covering the entire

we're back at 6:24. we continue to follow that breaking news out of the santa cruz mountains. as you can see a fire is burning there, it's been burning since 11:00 last night. a firefighter did fall down a ravine, the good news is firefighters have found him, they are now rescuing him. about 100 homes or structures i should say are structured so there are mandatory evacuation orders in place. more on that in the next half

hour. the atlas fire in the north bay not only forced thousands of people to evacuate their homes but hundreds of farm animals also had to find safety. >> in fact, dozens were forced to leave animal place, it's a rescue shelter in vacaville as those flames threatened their home a mile away. workers loaded them into crates and trailers and drove them to a ranch where 300 of the shelters animals live. >> very unsettling. we take care of the animals first, my partner and i rocky, we each packed an overnight bag and walked away from our home and all of our belongings but we knew our animals would be safe. right now the ranch is trying to find forever homes for those evacuated animals. okay. time to ask finny. >> today's 7 on your side's michael finny is tackling a question about credit reports. >> i was wondering how i could fix my credit score. i have a few things on my credit and i want to figure out the fastest way to get rid of it without having to pay everything off in full, interest and

shooting into the night's sky and this morning at least two people have been hurt including a firefighter. >> it sparked around 11:00 last night near bear creek and deer creek roads. i'm jessica castro. >> and i'm reggie aqui. let's get right to matt keller live in the santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: good morning. reggie and jessica. i want to get you an update on the firefighter who was injured out here, he fell down a ravine about 50 feet and we were told that he has a broken wrist and some cuts to his face. i was just told that they have a medical helicopter that is coming to the scene that's going to take that firefighter out and get him the medical treatment that he needs. also have another update on the other aircraft that is going to arrive here at dawn. this is going to take place as soon as we get sunlight out here, they will attack this from the sky. they have four helicopters lined up and two air tankers, that's going to help them get these flames out. this is bear creek canyon behind us. you can see that the flames over the last hour or so have started
6:31 am
to sit down, it looks like burning coals rather than the big flames shooting up the trees. that's the good news, firefighters say they're going to be aggressive. >> as you can see right now from the -- what we saw before, the fire is not as active as it was so we're trying to push to get direct line which means we're going direct on the fire's edge to try to hook this thing as best we can. >> reporter: and firefighters are obviously dealing with some steep rugged conditions, it's really tough to get into this area and obviously some dangers out here with that firefighter falling, you have a hand crew, an inmate on the hand crew had smoke inhalation and that person had to be brought out. they are obviously facing a lot of difficult situations because of this steep terrain, it's difficult to get in here and it's dark out here. there is not a lot of light in the santa cruz mountains so they're dealing with that as well. about 150 homes have been evacuated, the sheriff's department from santa cruz and
6:32 am
from santa clara county were knocking on doors as well as the chp. they have road blocks up here as well to let people obviously leave the fire area, highway 9 that construction was ended early so that they could get out of this area, all those residents. oven one home has burned to far that's the good news, that's where this fire started, a home caught on fire and spread into the wild land and that's what started all these flames. i just got yord that there was a [ inaudible ] that was burned in this fire as well, they're bringing animal services to help out that house cat. right now firefighters feel they can be aggressive once that daylight comes they will get those hooeps and get those air tankers and that will will help out a lot here in the santa cruz mountains. >> matt, we certainly hope this thing is able to go out soon. thanks for the update. here is a look at the areas under evacuation orders this morning, deer creek road, rons road. >> and also dons road, lost valley road, favre ridge, oak

ridge as well. cal fire says, though, if you don't live on these streets and you feel you are in danger you need to leave right now. >> you heard that they are going door to door getting people out of the area that is most affected by the flames and evacuation center has been opened at boulder creek elementary school in boulder creek. >> obviously not something we are taking lightly in light of everything that has happened in the north bay recently. >> right. >> mike, will the weather cooperate? >> it really is. it already is as matt talked about, this thing is already laying down a little bit because of the calm conditions that are out there. this is at 4:25 when the fire was really getting going and you can see live doppler 7 picked it up. radar now and you can see it's gone. so the fine particulate matter, the embers, the smoke not nearly as prolific as it once was. the winds are fairly light but they are starting to pick up a little bit of a no rs to southeasterly flow which will start pushing some of that smoke into the south bay. here is a look at the forecast,%
6:34 am
the conditions, the weather conditions, will deteriorate but they're not going to be extreme like they were in the north bay. this will never be like the north bay. you still see we have pretty calm conditions at 7:00, 61, a north wind at 9 and 75 at noon, a north with end at 11 and 76 at 4:00 that's when they will be the worst. the winds will start to calm as the sun comes down and cooler air filters in, northwest at 7 and 67 degrees. not worried about this fire spreading too much especially with the sun coming up soon and aerial drops coming in. we do have some road closures due to this fire as well. we will take you don to the santa cruz mountains on our traffic maps. basically between highway 17 and highway 9 you heard matt say they did pick up construction early on hoyt 9 this mornin so folks could get out of the area. we did have some lanes scheduled to be closed until much later this morning, but they did rap that up well ahead of schedule. we did talk to chp in the south bay here in the santa cruz area,
6:35 am
they did confirm that bear creek is closed at deer creek, hawk ridge and state route 9 and that's for a couple reasons, obviously want to keep people safe and they want to have those routes open for the fire crews to be able to get in and out as needed. so i will update you as soon as those change, but we have that confirmed by chp just a couple minutes ago. back to you guys. we want to get now to the north bay fires. here is a look at the containment figures this morning. progress in mendocino and lake counties, the red wood fire is now at 55% containedment the sulphur fire at # 0% contained. the at last fire at 70% and the tubbs fire at 75% containment. the nuns fire at 53 and the pocket fire at 45%. >> this morning the sutter hospital in santa rosa will reopen after being evacuated last week. >> amy hollyfield is there for us this morning. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hi, good morning, reggie. they are going to be opening in just a few minutes at 7:00 this morning, but they will be easing back into business, it's quite a
6:36 am
process to reopen a hospital. no surgeries are scheduled for today but they're definitely ready for any emergency surgeries that need to take place today. they will be ready to treat anyone who needs help. here is some video of the evacuation that happened a week ago. you can see in this video from sutter hospital in santa rosa that fire was threatening the building so they evacuated 77 patients to other bay area hospitals. a spokeswoman tells me this morning most if not any of those will be moving back to the hospital today. most of them probably don't need to come back. >> the average length of stay for a patient is around five days. so since we are approaching here day nine, likely they've been discharged. of course, they would be welcome back if the hospital needs to transfer them back to the hospital, but we expect to be open to the community that's here and probably have new patients. >> reporter: they had to clean the hospital and then pass inspection with two state agencies before they could reopen and again that's
6:37 am
happening at 7:00 so just in about 20 minutes. they're hoping that this will be a healing for not just the patients but also the staff. at least 60 of the employees here lost their homes in the fire. so it's been a very stressful week and in many ways this hospital is ready to just get back to the business of healing people. reporting live in santa rosa, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. some sonoma county residents are able to return home after officials lifted evacuation orders to four different areas. and those areas include highway 128 between river rock casino and chalk hill road, faugh and east shiloh road, west of fourth street east and gehricke road and all the counties north of east napa and west napa street to the burn area are open. cal fire and sonoma county officials say they have confident in the progress that firefighters are making. >> if your house is in the in
6:38 am
the area that is evacuated it could be weeks before you can go home. >> we do have areas that are evacuated. as soon as we can mitigate the threats of that by putting good control line on these fires and making sure that we are not putting people back into their homes and having to pull them back out, the next day, is eliminated. we will get those repopulate td as well. >> the sonoma county death toll is at 23 people. around 80 folks are still listed as missing. the sheriff warns the death toll could increase as searches of burned neighborhoods continue. at last count more than 40 firefighters, police officers and other first responders lost their own homes in the north bay firestorm. after saving lives, many of them are now starting to focus on their own losses. the fire union is offering financial help, counseling and assistant with housing. novato fire battalion chief menzel returned to his home and it's now turned into rubble. >> i mean, everything was

incinerated. there's nothing to sal raj. i've been through, my home, and it's unbelievable. it's extremely humbling, but also it's uplifting because -- because i have so many people that are reaching out. >> a fund has been established to help these firefighters. to donate you can text ff strong to 41444. we also have a link to a go fund me page on our website. abc7news.com. we do have some great news from pg&e this morning. the utility is hopeful that all fire victims should have all of their power restored by the end of the day. they had hoped to have everyone back online by midnight but right now an estimated 22,000 customers are still in the dark. pg&e says that's roughly 5% of customers who lost service during the height of the fire, but again hopefully that changes by tonight. several schools in the fire zone are still closed. napa valley unified schools are
6:40 am
set to reopen tomorrow. sonoma county schools will begin reopening between monday and thursday of next week. and sonoma state resumes classes tomorrow. santa rosa junior college will reopen on monday, napa valley college has been housing fire eve could you khweis, the shelters will close today and the school will resume classes monday. i've been watching the bear fire from sky 7 and winds are picking up just a little bit, they're blowing to the southeast -- i'm sorry, i'm looking at it it's right over the camera if i'm not looking at you it's because i'm watching the helicopter but it's not fanning the flames which is the good news. so just like us they have nearly calm conditions down there. let's take a look at our forecast. there we go, i meant to show you something else. let me switch this back over and get you 280 and 17 there. there we go. all right. so you can see the smoke still out there, a colorful sunrise

developing down in the south bay and across all of our neighborhoods because of the high clouds and smoke. waking up a little warmer this morning, temperatures around 52 to 53 degrees, our warmest temperatures will be inland, 78 at noon, 84 a little warmer than average this afternoon, 72 around the bay at noon, nice day to be outside and the air quality will be conducive to sitting outside from time to time, 77 at 4:00, 64 to 62 at the coast, 50s, 60s and 70s as we head throughout the 7:00 hour from the coast to the bay to inland. let's talk about our storm impact scale, it's 1, it's light, thursday night through friday morning, light rain is on the way from a couple hundredths in the south bay to a quarter inch up in the north bay mountains. breezy at times. i will have an hour by hour look at that and the drop in in our temperatures that are coming with it. here is alexis. good morning, mike. taking a look at the san matteo bridge i did just confirm we do have a crash on westbound 92 right around the decline of the san matteo bridge.
