frnow from abc 7, live breaking news. >> breaking news, fire breaks out? the santa cruz mountains. flames tearing through the hillside destroying four structures so far and prompting new evacuations. the cal fire just offered some encouraging news. firefighters are making progress containing the flames. thanks for joining us, i'm kristen sze. cal fire add midsts the location of the fire is a challenge with fire crews having to scale steep terrain to get on the front lines. let's show you where the evacuations are right now. this map highlights the areas surrounded by deer creek road, rauns road, lost valley road and oak ridge. the santa cruz county sheriff says anyone who feels like they're in danger should leave

now. sky 7 flew over the santa cruz mountains to give us a better idea of what firefighters are up against. take a look, sky map 7 on sky 7 shows you dawns road right there, in fact, the different roads surrounded by smoke in the middle of that thick forest. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live in the santa cruz mountains where he just got an update from cal fire officials. matt? >> reporter: kristen, the battle continues on. i got the update from cal fire. they say the fire 152 acres and 5% contained. the flames are moving slowly here in the bear creek canyon behind me. there is a lot of smoke here. it's tough to breathe. tough to see. and it's having a big impact on cal fire's ability to fight the flames from above. >> playing a big role, we'd like to have a lot more aircraft on it but because of the safety issues because the smoke is down, really hovered down into it, we have to limit our aircraft. >> reporter: cal fire had six aircraft on order. because of the smoke, they're och

only using three right now. everyone is on edge in the santa cruz mountains. it's dangerous when a fire starts in the middle of the night, this at 11:00 p.m. the call a structure was on fire and flames spread into the brush. law enforcement went into action going door to door telling people in 150 homes to evacuate the bear creek canyon area. there are a lot of road clowe shires in the area as well. firefighters had trouble getting into this fire. it's steep and rugged. five firefighters were injured. one fell 30 to 50 feet down a ravine and appeared to break his wrist and had cuts on his face. three other firefighters slipped down a hill. they're expected to be okay. an inmate working the fire had smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital. that person has been treated and released. firefighters say resources won't be an issue even though cal fire has been spread out all over california and in the north bay. i asked the cal fire chief how long he expects to be out here fighting this fire. only 5% contained right now. they have 250 firefighters out here right now. he says they're getting

reinforcements tomorrow. he's expecting a big fight out here. but they're hoping with the weather, calm winds out here, low humidities, though, but it is favorable conditions, so they're hoping that that will help in their fire fight and hopefully get it under control soon. reporting live in the santa cruz mountains, matt keller, abc 7 news. two evacuation centers are open for people who left their homes, one at the zayante fire station on east zayante road in felton. the other lakeside elementary school on black creek road in los gatos. everyone is welcome. no matter where you are in the bay area, you probably smell smoke from the north bay fires. abc 7 news was on market street in san francisco's financial district a short time ago. see peek wore masks to prevent being irritated by our very smoky air. abc 7 news meteorologist is monitoring air conditions right now with mike nicco. mike, in addition to the air quality, of course, we're concerned about the winds for fire fighting. >> yeah, we'll start with air quality and get to the winds.

hi, kristen, hi, everybody. here's a look from sutra tower. the air quality is getting worse by the moment. as we've got some high clouds that have settled over the area. kind of put a little bit of a lid on the atmosphere. it's a spare the air today with the north bay. there you see in orange. in the coast and central bay, see in yellow having unhealthy air for everybody. everybody else moderate right now. that could change. thanks to that northerly surface breeze and the westerly upper air breeze. once the smoke gets above 8,000 feet. there's a possibility that it could start moving to the west. all right. what we're going to deal with as we head deeper into the forecast is more poor air quality at least through tomorrow. let me show you what's going on quickly with that fire. winds are around 1 to 8 miles per hour. that's been the key all morning. it's been a very, very light wind. it's just the terrain's been the biggest obstacle and the reduction of visibility. now, as we get through the afternoon hours, going to get much warmer. about 79 humidity down to 15%.

the winds around 11. they'll be fastest at 4:00. then wind conditions will calm down. so will the temperatures and the humidity will rise a little bit better overnight, kristen. >> all right, mike, thank you. the abc 7 news app has been sending out updates on the fire in the santa cruz mountains. you can download the app for free. we'll keep sending out new information on this fire and any other breaking news. santa rosa starting to show a few signs of returning to normal. one major development is this morning's re-opening of sutter santa rosa regional hospital. it evacuated all patients during the height of the firestorm. this newly released time lapse video shows how quickly the flames approached the hospital. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is there live with stories of heroism and bravery from the terrifying night. amy? >> reporter: hi, kristen. see this building? this is a facility, or was, for patients' families to stay. a place for them to say while their loved ones were in the hospital. it burned down. this is in the parking lot of the hospital. so it gives you an idea of how close this came to the hospital.

fire did reach the roof. it damaged it. this hospital re-opened today. the staff did pause, though, to remember the intense evacuation. in this video from the hospital surveillance camera, you can see the building was surrounded by fire. some staff members suddenly found themselves trying to put out the fire. >> we had several fires within 10 to 20 feet of our oxygen tanks that fuel the facility, and our diesel >> reporter: security guard kelsey c kelsey claybrook and other employees protected the oxygen tanks from the fires and called to the roof. >> on the way up the stairs i inhaled a lot of smoke, felt twitchy, charley horses in my legs and vomited on the way up the stairs. >> reporter: meanwhile patients needed evacuating including babies. >> we had to wait for ambulances. they weren't all available yet. it was starting to be a little bit more smoky in here. >> reporter: two babies needed incubators. one ambulance took one of those babies. they had to wait for more to

arrive. >> we had one more ambulance show up and we just loaded it with as many of the stable babies that we could in bassi t bassinets so they were side by side in bassinets on the floor of the -- of the ambulance. >> reporter: the stories are harrowing, but they did it. and today, as a team, reached another big moment. sutter regional hospital in santa rosa is again open for business. they had to scrub all the walls and floors this past week. and restock all of their supplies because of smoke damage. but today, they're ready to serve the people of santa rosa. >> but it's good to be here now. it's good to see the people in the building again that things are cleaned up and that at least here, we're bouncing back. >> reporter: and to give you an idea of how badly this community needs this hospital, it opened at 7:00 a.m. the first patient was here waiting at the e.r. at 6:59. reporting live in santa rosa, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you.

hundreds of kaiser permanente employees are also back to work this morning after the tubbs fire shut down medical offices in santa rosa. abc 7 news was there in the early morning hours of september 9th when these patients were rolled o ut of intensive care into ambulances. we're going to double check on that date because it's not september 9th. of course, the hospital remains closed. but two medical buildings next to kaiser re-opened yesterday. including one that has a pharmacy. no word yet on when the hospital, itself, will re-open, of course, that date was october 9th when it evacuated. new information on the fires burning in sonoma county. ca wi cal fire, and defarmt of emergency services updated the board of supervisors this morning. they say the number of missing people is going down. they're now down to 65 from 1,900 initially reported missing. in terms of looting, actually make that 14 people have been arrested including someone driving a fake fire truck and another person dressed as a security guard. the fires have burned more than

102 acres combined. cooler temperatures are helping contain the fires now, but the sheriff says more than 27,000 homes are still threatened. >> it picture on my phone this morning of the oakmont fire, it is still raging in places. >> wow. >> that's. what we can't lose sight of, how much work is getting done out there to stop the fire still, right, so many people have this mindset that we're past this, it's over. it's not over. >> sonoma county officials are set to give its next fire briefing today at 1:00 at the fairgrounds in santa rosa. we'll send out a push alert on the abc 7 news app as soon as it starts and of course have live coverage on the app. the redwood valley is now more than 60% contained. the fire there. after burning nearly 36,000 acres. it's being blamed for eight deaths. the sheriff says all mandatory evacuation orders in mendocino county have been lifted. however, potter valley remains under an evacuation warning. crews are now close to fully containing the sulfur fire burning in lake county. cal fire tells us it's 92%

contained. no evacuation orders at this time now. the fires in mendocino and lake counties have destroyed a total of 436 homes. moving forward after utter devastation, this is a live look at the is a moem sonoma county fairgrounds. 7 on yar your side michael finney setting up,

>> hi there, working on that 12 hour planner. i wanted to change something just a little bit on it as we got deeper into the forecast. i wanted to take the temperatures down just a little bit as we head toward midnight. so here's what's going to happen as far as your forecast. let's jump right into the details. by looking out the weather window. and some of those details do include that chance of rain. all right, got 1:15. that's your timetable for delays getting to sfo. see why. it is really hazy out there. high clouds, smoke, above average temperatures. steady lows and clouds and smoke. temperatures will be the same. but the clouds and smoke will be more plentiful tomorrow morning than this morning. that chance of rain coming as we saw that little appetizer there. let me set the table for you. storms are to our south. see them down there. see the lightning bolts? thunderstorms. they're going to stay around the central coast. we're getting the high clouds. because of that southerly push, we're getting a pretty mild air mass today even with the lack of sunshine. we got one cold front moving through the pacific northwest. not much moisture associated with it, in fact, it's going to

fizzle the next 12 to 24 hours but does open down -- or open the door, break down the barrier, if you will, trying to put those together. sorry about that. and so our next storm, still coming. it looks a lot more vigorous than that other one. we're hoping it still brings us some rain. won't be healthy, won't be decent. but the timing is kind of the key if you're a commuter. here we are at 7:00 during the evening hours. see just now touching sonoma county. already in lake and mendocino counties. thing you'll also notice is it's green. no yellows. no oranges. no moderate rain. stays green as it move into the heart of the bay at midnight, all the way down the peninsula coast. by 4:00 in the morning, it's already starting to fall apart. becoming some light rain in patches and drizzle. by the time we get to the end of the commute, the drizzle's drying and we're transitioning to cloudy conditions with the best chance of wet weather and snow in the high country. the afternoon hours, we'll see a little bit of sun start to break out. because it's coming in overnight, better chance of the rain reaching the ground and better chance of it being wet

when you drive friday morning. anywhere from .2 an inch of rain to about quarter inch in the north bay mountains up to ukiah. high clouds, all that haze. not a lot of sunshine. temperatures mid 60s at the coast, mid 70s around the bay. low to mid 80s inland. we'll get a more of a sea breeze tomorrow. look for some clouds near the coast. in the coastal valleys there. spilling into places like santa rosa. temperature, 42 there to about 56 in san francisco. those temperatures tomorrow will be a little cooler with that stronger sea breeze. 50s, 60s, barely 70s thursday as the cooler air starts to come in then friday just 50s and 60s. a touch of fall with light showerses in the morning then sunshine returns saturday. warm and dry again by sun and monday. >> cool with a little rain. we'll take that, mike. >> i hope so. i hope it comes in, really helps, at least clear the air out, take the temperatures down and should help the firefighters. >> double benefits. all right. thank you. >> you bet. now to today's morning money

report. facebook just acquired another startup. this time the popular teen app called tbh. named after the acronym, to be honest. the app is designed for people ages 13 and over. it focuses on positivity. it allows users to rate their friends on things like who has the best smile, or who gives the best hugs. the app just launched in august. already there have been 5 million downloads. cash is streaming into los gatos-based netflix at record levels. the service added more than 5 million subscribers in the third quarter. it has more tan 109 million worldwide. the extra users will help finance netflix's plans to pay as much as $8 billion for new content next year. happening now, nfl owners are meeting to discuss the recent national anthem protests. abc 7 news jessica castro has more on the meeting that comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by former 49er colin kaepernick. jessica? >> hi, kristen, it is a really rare move. the nfl owners inviting players

and union reps to attend the anderand oners' regularly scheduled meeting to try to find a compromise. one person that won't be there, former niners quarterback colin kaepernick who is challenging the nfl accusing the league and all 32 team owners of colluding to keep them off the field. according to court documents obtained by abc news the unsigned free agent quarterback is claiming, quote, multiple nfl head coaches and general managers stated that they wanted to sign mr. kaepernick, only to mysteriously go silent with no explanation and no contract offer made. and kaepernick thinks his refusal to stand during the national anthem last season to protest racial injustice is the reason for his unemployment. >> you're going to have that backlash for trying to fight for people. >> and the current nfl manual, the players are required to be on the field during the national anthem, and should stand, but that policy has now fiercely been up for debate. the goal today is to come up with a solution allowing players to continue protesting racial i
