fog moving into the bay as we look west from our east bay hills camera. temperatures in the 40s. dress warmer. how about only 50s at the coast today. 66 to 69 around the bay and inland and 72 to 76. it will be brighter today. maybe not quite as hazy but it is still another spare the air day. if you're heading out this evening 53 to 63. rain is on the way. how about an update on your morning commute. what are you seeing? >> it is a spare the air day and a major b.a.r.t. delay on the fremont line in all directions. they're having an equipment problem on the tracks so obviously not good. a dense fog advisory for golden gate bridge. it's not looking terrible but it has thickened up. some parts of the north bay with low visibility this morning so take it easy. and a quick check of drive times, westbound 580 tracy to dublin. westbound 4 antioch to concord a new crash along that stretch in the yellow at 32 minutes. and san rafael to san francisco

even with the fog you're doing okay. in the green at 15. >> alexis, thank you. 600 firefighters working to contain a 271-acre wildfire that we've been telling you about in the santa cruz mountains. this started monday night on bear canyon road. so far the bear fire has destroyed four structures, 150 more still threatened. that fire is only 5% contained. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at one of the evacuation centers. we'll check in with him our next half hour. and now some of the biggest fires burning in the north bay. the nuns fire and napa and sonoma counties burned nearly 53,000 acres, 73% contained. over to the tubbs fire, 432 acres burned, 87% contained for that one. finally, the atlas fire in napa and solano counties, it's burned just over 51,000 acres and, as you can see, at 80% containment. students resume classes at sonoma state after the campus

was closed due to the north bay fires. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is there and, amy, good morning to you. some special things planned for today, right? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. they will start the day with doughnuts and coffee in the university center. so students and staff can connect and give or receive support. this campus was saved, it was okay. officials say they could see flames approaching the area on monday morning but no damage here on campus but more than 50 staff members and students lost their homes to the fire including university president, her santa rosa home was destroyed. so they will have a banner on campus today that people can sign for firefighters to thank them for all of their hard work during this firefight. late this afternoon everyone is invited to come and take a picture with the banner to give to firefighters and the chancellor will be here to make a few remarks. administrators have been in constant contact with

firefighters and city leaders and they have decided it is now safe for everyone to return to campus and for classes to resume. reporting live in rohnert park, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> officials say schools in napa county are going to remain closed until monday. the unified school district planned to reopen today but that's delayed because of the poor air quality and you can see that in amy hollyfield's live shot. a complete list of school closures is posted on our website, abc7news.com and our app. you'll want to keep checking that for updates throughout the week. happening today something very important for evacuees and anyone in those counties affected. a host of north bay politicians are actually joining with fate and federal officials to education fire victims about cleaning up any debris. it's a very involved process. it's an important one. officials say property owners re-entering burned areas should not remove any ash or hazardous

materials from their property. in fact, listen to this, unauthorized removal of debris may jeopardize the ability to obtain help from fema. a news conference at 1:00 p.m. at the sonoma county fair ground. brock long will meet with governor jerry brown. they're expected to discuss the widespread damage as a result of the fires. cal fire says more than 245,000 acres have burned statewide in the last ten days. long is now stationed in the north bay as this disaster transitions into the recovery phase. >> california's a special state, it's a beautiful place. we have to be working very diligently not only today but for many years to come seeing the urban nature of the wildfire and what it can do to hundreds of homes in an area. you don't see that very often. it's pretty disturbing. >> as of this morning there are 11,000 firefighters on the front

lines battling these fires. crews are making significant progress on the redwood valley fire in mendocino county burning west of mendocino national forest. it's about 70% contained. the fire has blackened nearly 36,000 acres there and is being blamed for eight deaths. and crews are now close to fully containing the sulfur fire burning in lake county. cal fire reports it's 92% contained and has burned 2,200 acres. evacuation orders have been lifted but warnings do remain in place. the fires in lake and mendocino counties have destroyed a total of 436 homes. happening today a chance to drive up and donate to fire victims. "the press democrat" and redwood credit union are partnering in a relief fund at the village at corte madera. it will begin at 4:00 and run until 6:00. it will benefit relief efforts and survivors of the devastating fires. and there are plenty of other ways to help, too, from

yesterday. still spare the air. you can see some of the clouds hanging around san jose this morning, increasing clouds and fog tonight. so not quite as warm as this morning, showers and light rain through the extended. here we are at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. we'll have a southwest flow which will push most of the smoke northeast away from us, at least from the north bay fires. now the santa cruz fires will push it right across the south bay and into our east bay neighborhoods. i want to show you the dots of green. those are some light rain showers out ahead of the steadier ban that at 4:00 is showing moderate tendencies with yellow and orange as it moves through mendocino and lake counties. a few pockets of yellow as it moves through the north bay. but by 10:00 as it's into the bay it's start to go taing to j down. by 4:00 it exits the south bay and we'll see clearing as we head through the morning commute and we'll be dealing with some slick streets. the reason why, check out the rainfall totals. we'll start way up north.

and really come down in the next 15 or 20 minutes. from a major delay down to ten minutes and things are definitely looking up. moving to our traffic maps we have one new problem in the east bay. if you are traveling westbound 580 to the bay bridge a crash right around grand avenue, one lane blocked there although i'm not seeing much of a backup. 880 looking good for alternates as well a. quick check outside, a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza thinning out on the left side. using fastrak in the middle or cash lanes, you are congested. that is the norm. we don't have any blocking issues along the stretch. back to highway 4 where we have another crash coming up in less than ten. >> alexis, fair warning. you're about to see a man in his drawers. a sky driving trip took an unexpected twist for one utah man and we have the proof. the wind almost blew miles mortensen's pants clean off

ro it's 6:23. if you're heading to the gym this morning, a new study finds too much exercise can kill you, especially if you're a white male. researchers tracked exercise patterns over 25 years and found white men who exercise more than 7 1/2 hours per week were 27% more likely to have heart disease. researchers warn the findings are not permission to give up exercise but it is an interesting finding. a popular east bay brewery is closing its doors after 23 years. black diamond brewery posted this picture on facebook yesterday. the sign says due to unfortunate circumstances the locks have been changed and the brewery is closed for the foreseeable future. the brewery did not give a reason why it's closing. on a very separate note last saturday the brewery threw a last-minute wedding reception after a couple's venue in napa was destroyed.

contained. people are still out of their homes this morning. abc 7 news reporter matt keller is live at an evacuation center in felton. hi, matt. >> reporter: good morning, jessica and reggie. we are at an evacuation center, a fire department whose firefighters just arrived back from the bear fire. they say it was good news overnight. cal fire is expecting to give us an update at about 7:00. here are the latest numbers overnight. four structures were destroyed. bear fire is 5% contained. one woman said embers were already on her driveway when her family decided to leave. >> my husband said if there's anything that you want you'd better take it now because

that's it. i grabbed my dad and my brother's urns. >> reporter: sandra wood found out her yurt was destroyed. the same evacuations in the bear canyon area are still in effect this morning. the sheriff's department says they are patrolling the area overnight. there are still several road closures and shelters for both people and their animals. you can find the information on our website abc7news.com. reporting live in felton, matt keller, abc 7 news. in the east bay several hundred dublin residents waking up in their homes after being evacuated yesterday by a fast-moving grass fire. sky map 7 showing you exactly where the fire was burning and how close it got to homes. the 116 acre fire started about 4:00 p.m. crews aggressively attacked the fire with fire retardant to slow the flames. the evacuations lifted after

5:30. a santa rosa couple will hold a news conference in san francisco to answer questions about their new lawsuit against pg&e. >> their names are wayne and jennifer, they lost their home in the coffey park neighborhood, one of the hardest hit areas when the tubbs fire raged through that area. the couple claims it was pg&e's fault that high voltage power lines actually went crashing down, came into contact with dry vegetation and sparked multiple fires. now pg&e officials have not commented. they said they will not speculate about any cause of those fires yet. pg&e says they have crews, and are restoring electricity to 97%. in addition cal fire has given the utility access to 6,000 homes. officials expect to restore power to those customers by tomorrow. pg&e also says they hope to get access to a remaininging 400

homes today. officials say they expect to restore gas service to all remaining customers who can receive it by tonight. the napa county sheriff identified the volunteer firefighter killed on monday. 38-year-old garrett paiz was from missouri. he was working as a volunteer firefighter in washington state when he was dispatched to the north bay. he was driving a privately owned tender down a steep grade when he apparently lost control. the water truck rolled down an embankment northwest of yountville. paiz was the 41st victim of the deadly wildfires and the first crew member to lose his life. senators dianne feinstein and harris are raising concerns about the wireless emergency alert system, the nationwide system that sends alerts to your cell phone. the senators sent a letter to the fcc saying the system did not transmit lifesaving information because of, quote, technical deficiencies. the sheriff giordana says the

county sent out warnings through its nixle service. they require residents to register in advance. this morning we are getting a broader view of the devastation caused by the wildfires. >> wayne freedman took an aerial tour with the national guard over the fire zones. both fountaingrove and coffey park neighborhoods are mostly flattened. the major compared the devastation to iraq and the florida keys following hurricane irma. >> a few weeks ago we were in irma working hurricane recovery. in either scenario you start thinking about what it would be like to be that person with that loss and it's remarkable. it's got to be a tough spot to be in. >> cal fire estimates more than 5,000 structures are destroyed. a golf tournament in the north bay that wrapped up only hours before the start of the

wildfire is now donating to the relief effort. the safeway open is contributing $200,000 in support of napa and sonoma counties. it was held at seilverado resor and spa. the contribution comes just after albertsons, the parent company of safeway, announced a fund-raising campaign to benefit fire victims. >> if you'd like to help text to donate $10 to the red cross. just text the word red cross to the number 90999. you can also call the number on your screen if you want to volunteer. 707-577-7600. a spare the air alert remains in effect today. the regional air quality district is tracking air pollution and smoke from the wildfires is forcing many people to wear facemasks around downtown san francisco and other areas. stay indoors if you can and avoid strenuous activity until the air quality improves. happening today the city of

san jose teaming up with the santa clara water department to make sure people are ready for the upcoming storm system, the first of three resource fairs to help the public prepare for the possibility of flooding takes place today. coyote creek flooded three communities earlier this year and these fairs are being held in those communities. tonight's winter storm resource fair will be held at the golden wheel community room from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and even though we have a la nina brewing for the winter doesn't mean we couldn't have flooding rain. we'll keep an eye on your winter as we get closer to it. let's focus on what's going on outside. look at the lack of high clouds and haze. much cleaner air to most of us except near the fire zone in the north bay where you have poor air quality now and most likely to have it throughout the day. tomorrow one of our last spare the air days.

developing news out of southern california, firefighters have contained a fire that tore through the west coast's largest oil refiny. this is in el segundo. you see the heavy smoke and flames. firefighters used water and foam to put out the foire in about a hour. people were told to close their windows and stay inside. thankfully no one was hurt. i want to show you this, the newest cover of "the hollywood reporter." it was just released within the last hour and take a look here. you can see disgraced producer harvey weinstein and what appears to be sharp teeth, look

one-fourth are processing grapes. cruz automation may be head to go new york city. the self-driving car company applied to test vehicle in crowded manhattan. cruise automation plans to start testing early next year. they've been testing cars in san francisco for more than a year. investors are keeping a close eye on the stock market this morning after a record breaking day. yesterday the dow crossed the 23,000 mack frk for the first t ever closing slightly below that mark. and this morning look at this. trading under way in about 15 minutes. you can see that, well, it's been trading for 15 minutes. the big board up 111 points at more than 23,000 once again. so there's good news and disappointing nouse f ining new warriors. last night's game didn't quite end the way they wanted. >> the warriors received their championship rings prior to the game and the team also unveiled the new championship banner to hang in the rafters, so everything started off well.

the warriors held the 17-point lead in the third quarter but then houston came back and took the lead. in the final second durant hit what appeared to be the game ball winner at the buzzer. referees, though, said, uh-uh, didn't get it. he didn't shoot it off in time. the rockets went on to beat the warriors, 122-121. that last ball just didn't count. ouch. >> this is just their warm-up. we're good. take a look at what the weather is doing. they got their one loss for the season out of the way early. good morning. the roof cam, it looks cleaner. up right around napa that reporting station is saying unhealthy air there and it will be across the north bay again tomorrow so a couple of spare the air days left. cleaner and cooler for all of us today. wet weather still promising that tomorrow and friday and then building warmth this weekend. autumn just can't get hold on our weather. summer will come back.

look at the live doppler radar out of seattle and portland. live doppler 7 showing that wet weather up there as the next storm is churning the parent flow up in the gulf of alaska. a chance of scattered showers tomorrow and light rain during the overnight hours leaving a trace to a third of an inch. it will be breezy. winds will be variable thursday into friday that will blow some of the smoke around. some of the scout showers. see the green here, very light at 4:00 during the afternoon hours across the north bay. moving into mendocino. some of that rain will hold through the north bay but then it fizzles by 10:00 and look at this by about 4:00 in the morning the rain is over and we're starting to see some clearing in the skies. rainfall amounts very impressive. we'll start north, a third in calistoga. a quarter in santa rosa, napa. a tenth for the rest of us. less than a tenth of an inch of rain. cooler tomorrow and friday.

look at some of the summer warmth. alexis? a look at the roads. we do have a handful of crashes to get to including westbound highway 4. just before you get to san marco boulevard it sounds like the bike lost a fire. i'm not sure if that caused the crash or was the result of it. we have the tow truck trying to get to the scene. heavier than average if you are traveling from pittsburg or antioch area. 880 near marina boulevard a two-car crash blocking two lanes. they're very close to clearing that. the bay bridge toll plaza looking typical here. we've had some average volumes and the metering lights on at about 5:20 this morning. a new collision in walnut creek. we'll check on that next. happening today the primary challenger hoping to replace democrat dianne feinstein in the senate will officially kick off his campaign in los angeles. state senator kevin deleon will hold a campaign event at noon

6:54. if you're just joining us here are the accept things to know. crews are working to contain a 271-acre wildfire in theanta cruz mountains. the fire is threatening 150 homes near bear canyon road and boulder creek. four structures destroyed. the fire is only 5% contained.

number two, firefighters making progress in the north bay. the nuns fire in napa and sonoma counties now 78% contained. tubbs fire 87% contained. the atlas fire at 80% containment. number three, a santa rosa couple will hold a news conference to answer questions about their lawsuit against pg&e. the couple claims negligence caused high-voltage power lines to come into contact with dry vegetation sparking the tubbs fire which burned down their home. number four, 7 on your side's michael finney will be in napa to take questions from north bay fire victims. follow abc 7 news on social media for updates. number five, president trump denies telling the widow of a fallen soldier he, quote, knew what he signed up for. a florida congresswoman made the claim last night. president trump says the congresswoman made the story up. in response that congresswoman called the president a sick man. number six, some good news weatherwi weatherwise, the air will be cleaner and a little bit brighter today. the concentration of poor air
