where the hutch was. she got very emotional as she was looking for the family's silverware. but then she got determined as she noticed the melted metal from the rims of her car and talked about how she can maybe make a frame out of that. or she's going to put pictures before and after of the home here. so people here really showing that they are sonoma strong. it's hard to imagine finding anything left in the ruins of santa rosa's coffey neighborhood. everyone has that one thing they hope to find. today was their day to try. rene hernandez knew exactly where her husband left his wedding ring, on the bathroom counter. >> it our wedding rings, we left them in the bathroom. >> reporter: today she found what was left of it. the hernandezes haven't been back to the ruins of their home since monday. a police barricade has kept everyone out. being on the outside has just added to their stress. >> every day we come from napa an hour to see if we can get in.

>> reporter: authorities lifted the evacuation order today. it chaplains were on hand to offer support, as fire victims assessed what was left and grieved what was lost. >> just devastating to see everything, you know, gone. >> 21 years of work. >> yeah. everything we ever owned, all our baby pictures. >> reporter: for her 20-year-old son, ben jr., today's mission was to recover the remains of the family pet. they had just put him to sleep and buried him in the backyard on sunday. hours before the fires raged through here. >> i wanted to come back to get him because i want to be able to cremate whatever's left so that way i can keep it with me until we do have a new house here so that way i can have another proper burial for him. >> reporter: they plan to bring chewy's remains back here someday. this is where they will live and create new memories as a family. >> we love it here. we want to rebuild. it's perfect area.

>> reporter: it's going to be a long, emotional day. well police are being very protective of this area. only residents and their family members are being allowed in today and tomorrow until 5:00 in the afternoon on sunday. they will open it to the public. reporting live in santa rosa, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> gosh, amy, emotions are just so raw. it's hard to watch their stories. thank you very bringing us their stories today. thank you. fire crews are also making steady progress this morning on the north bay fires. the redwood valley fire in mendocino county is 95% contained. while the sulfur fire is 96% contained. napa and solano counties the atlas fire 87% contained. nuns fire is 85% contained. the pocket fire at 82% containment. and the tubbs fire which ravaged santa rosa 93% contained. the 7 on your side team and michael finney continuing their week of popup events today. they're trying to help the north bay fire victims with questions. today he's going to be at the clear lake community center.

you can stop by, get your questions answered. he'll be there until 7:00 tonight. tour companies and winery owners in napa want the public to know now that the fires are nearly 100% contained, they are open for business. much of the lush wine growing valley remains intact. damage to the most popular areas is limited or nonnonexistent. one tour company owner says that hasn't stopped people from canceling, already lost about $30,000 from the cancelations and a half dozen of his employees have no word. >> to date we've canceled 38 tours we had booked and for a small three-car limousine operation, that's huge. >> porter vineyards is also ready for visitors. employees with hoses and shovels stopped the flames just one road shy of the vineyards. and more than half the grapes had already been harvested. overnight rains helped firefighters in the santa cruz mountains who have been battling a wildfire there all week long. abc 7 news reporter joimns us

live from the santa cruz mountains. tell us about the progress being made and interesting twist of the start of this fire. janine? >> reporter: yeah, reggie, we're at the cal fire base camp in bonny doon and firefighters are in good spirits and that's because they have a good handle on the fire. overnight the fire did not grow. overnight rain was a welcome sight for firefighters trying to contain the bear fire burning in the santa cruz mountains. cooler temperatures, little to no wind and the rain stopped the fire from growing. >> wasn't a whole lot especially when we're in timber country but it was enough to keep the temperatures cool and give the firefighters the upper hand in controlling this fire. >> reporter: the fire is now 40% contained and holding steady at 320 acres. the santa cruz sentinel" is reporting the bear fire started on a property that was the site of a chop shop bust in 2015. about a dozen burnedout vehicles were found in the area. people in the los cumbras neighborhood were allowed back

to their homes but an evacuation order remains in place to where the fire is burning. >> a lot of safety factors we're looking at before we let the homeowners back in, want to make sure the roads are repaired, those are safe, no trees that could fall down over the roads or power lines. >> reporter: cal fire is demobilizing. they're starting to let some of their crews go. they tell me that they expect containment in the next four days. reporting live, janine, abc 7li news. now your accuweather forecast with mike nicco. >> good morning, we're going to look at what's left of the showers. thankfully the rainfall amounts have been light enough that no debris flows or mudslides or anything occurred. as we head throughout the next couple hours, those showers will fizzle. we'll still have angry looking clouds out there. i doubt they'll give up the rain. the good side effect, look at this air quality. all of us just about greenwich is good. there's a few yellows around the strongest fires. that's going to continue.

but here's something different from yesterday. look at that. no spare the air all the way through monday. now, we reprieve from the warmth. temperatures below average today as autumn returns. next week, 70s at the coast, 80s around the bay and 90s inland. >> such a relief to be able to breathe easy again, thank you, mike. this was a scene of a tow truck accident on almaden expressway and branham. the driver crashed into a traffic light pole. he told police he lost control in the rain. officers say with the first rain of the season, people are forgetting to slow down when they get behind the wheel. in alameda county, another tow truck crash, this on westbound 580 near the dublin b.a.r.t. station. according to the chp, the driver smashed into the center divide and a fence shortly after 1:00 this morning and went debris flew onto the b.a.r.t. tracks. crews had to come and clear that away.

fortunately, there was no impact on the morning commute. the driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. and we'll take you to the north bay. santa rosa police investigating what's believed to be the first crash involving the new smarttrain. a 19-year-old on a bike was hit on west steele lane around 4:00 p.m. yesterday. police say he was wearing his earphones and talking on his cell phone. he didn't notice the rail crossing arms were down. the train engineer activated the brakes and sounded the horn but couldn't stop in time. the bicyclist was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. arraignment scheduled this afternoon for the man charged with hitting a san francisco police officer, leaving him critically injured. officer lewin-tankel remains in intensive care. he had to undergo emergency surgery on wednesday after getting hit by a man driving a stolen suv. tankel's injuries come as quite the shock for those who trained with him at the bay jujitsu on

mission street. the trainer credits tankel with changing his life. >> elia was able to use his influence to help me in a situation that could have made it to where i wouldn't be able to do what i'm doing now. >> tankel was hurt while responding to a gun-related case on turk street. the suspect, marquise johnson, is expected in court at 1:30 today. developing news out of san loren lorenzo. police are looking for a carjacker who ran over and killed the vehicle's owner. the victim has been identified as 46-year-old james figueroa jr. authorities say he left his pickup running unattended yesterday morning at 5:30. you can see from sky map 7 on sky 7 where this happened. happe vi villa del s oorol. when he got back to his car, the suspect was in the driver's seat. the suspect threw figueroa to the ground and ran over him. figueroa leaves behind a wife and two children. on or off leash?

about an hour ago. shows the scene overhead this morning. oakland police and the fire department were at that scene to help contain the leak and move people to safety. 2nd street had to be closed. pg&e managed to quickly cap the leak. people were allowed to start returning home a little while ago. in berkeley this morning, university police are asking yoo u to be on the lookout for a rock-throwing robber. a woman says she was hit in the head with a rock before someone stole her purse. this happened at people's park yesterday afternoon. the woman went to the hospital and called police. the suspect described as a white man in his 30s, about 6 feet tall, with a red beard. the victim says the robber was wearing a peter pan style hat. and a blue hooded sweatshirt. happening today, a swearing in ceremony for oakland's new fire chief. city officials announced yesterday interim chief darren white has been appointed to the post. he's been the interim chief for the past nine months. chief white assumes his new role immediately. he's been with

let's talk more about the beaches, heading out that way until 6:00 this afternoon, 19 feet at half moon bay. occasionally up to 25 which means sneaker waves. large breakers which will cause beach erosion. and some dangerous rip currents. so don't turn your back on the water. as far as what's going to happen the rest of today, let's take a look at your 12 hour day plan r planner. gorgeous shot from south beach. 57 to 60 at noon. have the sunglasses handy. breezy this afternoon. not much warming. this evening breezy, already in the 40s by midnight. we'll be down in the 40s just about everywhere. upper 30s in north bay valleys to 50 in san francisco. if you're going to the game sunday, 1:05 kickoff at levi stadium, 74, down to about -- warming up to about 78 degrees. in fact, temperatures back to average by tomorrow into sunday. as the air mass moves off and that sunshine and lighter breezes allow us to warm up a little bit. look at those temperatures monday, tuesday and wednesday, flirting with 90s inland, 80s along the bay and 70s reaching

the coast. every time we think awe tutumn here, stumbles out of the block and gets stiff armed by summer saying, no, i'm going to take over again. really warm next week for a while. >> people are taking the psychological rain effect and thinking that's it, we turned the corner. >> nope. not with the first storm. always a little too weak. it was nice rain. >> it was good to have it. mike, thank you. to your morning money report, apple's self-driving car is hitting the streets of silicon valley. we're getting a sneak peek at what project titan looks like. here it is. this video was shot yesterday in sunnyvale. notice has a very distinctive roof. we're told the reason is slykely due to the majority of the car's equipment being on the ceiling as opposed to being in the trunk like in many other self-driving vehicles. the man who shot the vehicle mcallester higgins works for a company that's developing self-driving taxis. in you use chariot, you're going to need to find a new way to get around this weekend. the california public utilities commission forced the private bus service to shut down at least for now.
