good morning, everyone. i'm caroline tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, october 22nd. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist mike nico in this morning for lisa argen. >> a lot of people on social media, is it sunday? yes, it's sunday. let's open up the weather window on our live doppler 7. you can see there's some fog on the coast and some is spilling into the bay. petaluma down to mile visibility. it will be a while before those visibilities improve. that's from sutra tower.

temperatures in the low 50s. as we head towards noon, 62 to 67. you'll need those sunglasses. even on the coast the clouds will be dissipating. keep you in the low 60s while the rest of us in the 73 to 76-degree range. by 9:00, stars. 55 to low 60s. so autumn is going to take a hiatus for a couple days. i'll show you that summer heat coming up in the 7-day forecast. here's caroline with more news. thank you, mike. we begin with breaking news in san ramon. a crash that happened on 680 ended with a fatality. that semi going through a fence, then falling onto san ramon boulevard. right now drivers must detour around that street. part of san ramon valley boulevard to pine boulevard is closed. it's expected to open later latr

morning. we will soon have details about the person who died following that semi truck. police are searching for two suspects in connection with a shooting. they initially responded to reports of an uber driver shot during an attempted robbery last night. it happened at laguna and clay. police at the scene would not confirm the victim was an uber driver, but there was an uber sticker on the back of his car. abc 7 news was there when the driver was loaded into an ambulance around 9:00 last night. he is expected to survive. at least one person is dead, another injured after a collision on highway 92 in san mateo county. chp officials say a driver who was under the influence caused the four-vehicle crash. it happened around 8:30 last night on the eastbound side of highway 92 near belmont. all lanes were initially closed but have since reopened.

chp officials say they arrested a second driver nearby who was not involved in that wreck. also on suspicion of dui. turning now to the fires in the north bay. many families are sifting through the remains of their santa rosa neighborhood this weekend. today fire victims are invited to a town hall meeting sponsored by a group of attorneys. it will be held at the freedman event center on mayette avenue from 10:00 to noon. tiffany wilson was in santa rosa yesterday covering what was lost and what was found after the fire. >> reporter: no warning, no time. >> this is the 1st street to go. this is where it started. >> brian and his girlfriend fled with the animals they could find. they returned to search for the two they could not. >> pumpkin and rusta. we hope our babies come home.

>> reporter: nearby this family is also searching. >> a little closure time. >> reporter: the carlsons visited their home. the silver dollars they had thed saved were not there now. >> we had left them in the corner and they're not there now. >> reporter: despite the setback, the families are rallying. >> carlson strong! >> reporter: we found similar courage at the norris house. >> without the park being here when we first came in, we wouldn't even know this street was ours. >> reporter: this was their home two weeks ago. now -- >> nothing left. >> reporter: -- today's scavenger hunt yielded few precious rewards. >> my class ring. >> reporter: neighbors stopped by to chat. there is no front porch, no cold drink to offer, no chair to relax on. just conversation, laughter and a sense of community stronger than any fire.

many of the families we spoke with say they don't know how ndk they certainly don't know when, but they do know one thing: they will be back. tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> a lot of resilience there. happening today, fire victims can turn to the salvation army for food the salvation army plans to visit people at their homes. they will continue to serve meals at evacuation centers that are still open. governor jerry brown has issued an executive order to speed up rhethe removal of hazardous waste in those areas ravaged by wildfires. that order allows the environmental protection agency to assist state and local officials in immediately removing dangerous debris. we're talking about things like batteries, flammable liquids and paint from burned homes. the epa is preparing to expand

its operations in napa and sonoma counties and will create staging areas for cleanups in the coming weeks. some of the out-of-town fire crews are about to head back home. but before they leave, the people of santa rosa are saying thanks. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has that story. >> reporter: firefighters came for pancakes, what each of them thought was a standing ovation. >> how could you not be so grateful for somebody who worked so hard for you? >> reporter: first responders were guests of honor at this pancake breakfast hosted by boy scout troop 32. this day gave thanks to those who battled the firestorm. >> it's great to see this show of support for all our departments. just driving down the highway, seeing every overpass just covered with signs, it's really touching. >> reporter: homeowners are returning to their fountain

grove neighborhood for the first time. >> we raised our two kids here. >> reporter: alan and norika williams can't believe the place they called home is now rubble. >> it was unbelievable. just driving up the parkway and see everybody's home. all these homes that had been here. we lived here for 18 years. >> reporter: some say keepsake decorations and a garden statue have all that's been salvaged so far. all 32 homes on this street reduced to ashes. some people are still finding things on their property. like this fish pond, somehow these miniature koi survived the fire. >> we just wanted a couple nuggets and this is one of those. >> reporter: residents must show i.d. to return to their properties. the williams vowed to return one day. >> we're going to rebuild here and stay. this is our home.

>> reporter: they say that could take years. several schools closed during the north bay wildfires plan to resume classes tomorrow. they include santa rosa junior college, all schools in the napa valley unified school district and napa valley college. many of these schools will offer counseling to both students and staff affected by the fires. for a complete list of school closures and reopening dates, you can go to our website, abc7news.com. santa rosa residents can pick up mail at two post offices starting from now until 4:00 this afternoon. the annex at 2850 mcbride lane will serve the following zip codes, 95401, 95403 and 95407. the main post office at 730 2nd street will serve 95402, 95404, 95405 and 95409. the firefight is not over yet in napa county but officials are

already preparing for a new battle, the winter rain and potential mudslides. the napa valley register reports calfire is beginning to assess damaged water sheds. the agency fears rain falling on burned hillsides may caus cause erosion and damaged trees may clog up waterways. napa valley is still recovering from the last winter season with six emergency road prepare projects in the works. that's something they definitely have to worry about, but no rain in the forecast this week. >> maybe not even next week, all the way through halloween. it looks like a warm stretch of weather on the way. beautiful picture of emeryville this morning which could be one of the last times we see fog this week. the owner of a t-shirt company drives several hours to help victims of the north bay wildfires. plus, how the 49ers plan to honor the legendary dwight clark

breaking news out of livermore. we're learning about an officer-involved shooting that happened just before midnight. police patrolling airway boulevard found a vehicle that had been reported stolen earlier this month. a woman inside refused to get out and start the engine. police say officers opened fire when she charged at officers, hitting two patrol cars. that woman is expected to

recover. sheriff's deputies in contra costa county are looking for a man who caused a fiery head-on crash on highway 4 yesterday afternoon. abc 7 news was in concord where the chp says a man driving the wrong way in a stolen pickup truck slammed into a red suv near willow pass road. several people were hurt but all are expected to be okay. witnesses say the truck was going about 60 miles an hour. the crash backed up eastbound traffic for hours. a viewer shared pictures of the truck flipped on its side, black smoke rising in the distance. the man ran away after the crash. sheriff's deputies had been trying to pull him over for driving that stolen truck. we're learning more about the suspected driver in a hit and run crash that has left a little girl in oakland critically injured. our media partner, the bay area news group, reports her name is annette koslowski.

she is accused of driving under the influence in connection with friday's crash. she hit a little girl at the intersection of eighth avenue and east 16th street. she is accused of leaving the scene short of after hitting a parked car. police in danville are looking for a driver who crashed into two cyclists and then drove away. it happened around 2:00 yesterday afternoon on diablo road near clydesdale drive. a silver suv was heading east when the driver crashed into the bicyclist who was going in the same direction. one was hit, the other hand had airlifted for treatment. police want to speak to that driver. on campus a man attempted to sexually assault a female jogger in the hills above the school. this happened thursday night

around 7:00. abc 7's lonnie rivera reports the victim fought back. >> it's rather shocking but kind of out of the ordinary. >> reporter: a campus warning alert notified uc berkeley students about an attempted sexual assault on a woman jogging along the fire trail. >> i think one of the most useful things is that almost anything on you can be a weapon and help you defend yourself. >> reporter: in the female jogger's case, she said she used her strength to defend herself. the suspect walked up behind the female jogger and tried to remove her shorts and fondled her. the jogger used force and ran away. >> i guess being a woman is scary in jegeneral alone. so yeah, it's a weird world we're living in.

>> it's a scary thing. i guess i don't have to think about those things as much, but it's not great to hear that. >> reporter: runners and walkers still enjoyed the popular trails on saturday. campus police would like anybody who knows anything about the assault to contact them. lonnie rivera, abc 7 news. the owners of a t-shirt company drove 11 hours to help victims of the north bay fires. they are selling #sonomacountystrong hats and t-shirts with proceeds going to all the fires in the bay area. they supplied baby supplies to victims and he's urging others to step up as well. >> we're raising money and trying to raise awareness that it only takes one family to help one family. we can all play a part in getting these people's lives

back together. >> the donations don't stop there. thousands more t-shirts will be shipped to sonoma county wineries to be sold to raise money for the victims. the company has done similar campaigns after the las vegas shooting, wildfires in arizona and september 11th. you know, pets are also suffering after the north bay fires. abc 7 news was in santa rosa where sonoma county animal services held a pet supply fair. owners who lived in the county and were affected by the fires could pick up anything pet-related, including carriers, bowls, food, and animal beds. >> all that we have here are donations given to us in the wake of the fires. we were overwhelmed with the donations ourselves at the shelter, so we're at a warehouse we're using for now. >> the fair was over a few hours long but donations continue to pour in. there could be more events like

this in the future. you can text redcross to 90999 to donate $10. you can also call the number to volunteer. 707-577-7400. concerts and football games at levi stadium, fans can apply for pre-check at levi stadium. it works just like the pre-check program at the nation's airport. they get through shorter lines and can also get fast passes to games and some concerts. they are the second nfl team to offer a precheck program. the new york jets offered a similar partnership earlier this month. also happening today, the 49ers will honor franchise legend dwight clark during today's game against the cowboys at levi stadium. the team is calling today 87 day named after clark's jersey

number. you might know that clark announced earlier this year that he's been diagnosed with als. clark is the one who made that famous catch back in 1982 that put the niners in the super bowl for the first time. at half time, the niners will honor clark and other members of the team, including joe montana who is expected to address the crowd. mike shumann, also a team member, will be there, too. all fans will get a t-shirt like that with clark's number and a silhouette of him making the catch. they posted this picture of john lynch and head coach kyle shanahan wearing those t-shirts. today's game starts at 1:05. sunshine about 73. kickoff about 78 at the time of the game. don't be confused. lisa has the day off. we have a little east wind at the golden gate bridge. you can see how clear it is there. it's that offshore breeze that

will bring us such warmer weather as we get deeper into the forecast. all that fog in santa rosa. the rest of us in the 50s, if not 57 right now in oakland and san leandro. no fog here, but it's patchy out there. by the afternoon hours, it's going to be sunny, just an absolutely glorious day to be outside. not a fire threat thanks to the rain we had friday. that's going to temper that a little bit. in autumn it goes on hiatus monday through thursday. clockwise flow putting this huge atmospheric river. it almost stretches from japan to the pacific northwest. and yeah, they're going to have so much rain up there, flooding is going to be an issue. i wish they could share some of it with us. it's just not in the offing. let's talk temperatures. microclimates, mid to upper 70s in the south bay, 76 san jose. low to mid-7 o0s on the peninsu,

san mateo about 72. afternoon breezes about 4:00 developing along the coast. temperatures there in the mid-60s. 67 in daly city. 66 to 68 in the north bay beaches, but about 75 in san rafael, vallejo and 79 in santa rosa and calistoga. low to mid-70s on the east bay shore from 72, and oakland about 75. 77 to about 79 degrees in our east bay neighborhoods. here's a look at santa cruz this morning. it's about 52 degrees right now, but when we warm up to 77, it will be a nice day to be there, just a little more breezy. more peninsula than santa cruz, you'll be protected a little bit. clean air if you're going to be doing some yardwork. maybe just put some sunscreen on. the walk to end lupus is at golden gate park at 10:00 this

nevada that will be dealing with fog in the next half hour, 45 minutes. it will start lifting there. let's take a look at the winds. they're almost nonexistent in some areas and that's why the fog hasn't spread too much. the 4:00 hour will bring you some sunshine. here we are at the golden gate bridge. it looks like a gorgeous morning to take a walk there. look at all those folks lined up to walk across the bridge. we're in the low 50s in our 12-hour "day planner." 62 to 67 at noon. at 4:00, the sea breeze kicks in. it gets a little cooler at the coast, 61. if you're heading out this evening, 55 to 62. the breezes are going to pick up in the hills and the temperatures will reach the 90s. i'll let you know if there is any fire danger in the forecast. caroline? this morning people are speculating about what thousands

of files in the assassination of john f. kennedy may reveal. reporter david wright the story. >> reporter: at a moment when his administration is getting raked over the coals over that attack in niger, embroiled in a debate about how best to console gold star families, president trump tweeted this weekend about jfk? and the mother of all conspiracy theories. >> president kennedy has been shot in dallas, texas. >> reporter: november 22nd, 1963. all these years later, how exactly this tragedy came to pass and why. we're not 100% sure. enter president trump on twitter this weekend. "subject to the receipt of further information, i will be allowing, as president, the long blocked and classified jfk files to be opened."

>> the president is releasing the documents even though the intelligence community would rather he not. the president enjoys stirring up controversy, and this will definitely stir up nationwide controversy. >> reporter: what we're talking about here is pages of secret documents, mostly cia and fbi case files. trump's friend and sometime lic has his own conspiracy theory why trump should release the documents. >> they're likely to show that lee harvey oswald was trained, nurtured and put in place by the central intelligence agency. >> reporter: raw case files could breathe new life into all sorts of conspiracy theories. >> just because something is labeled as an intelligence report doesn't mean it's true. therefore, citizens looking at these files could easily be confused and come to the conclusion that president kennedy was killed by the russians or the cubans or the american mafia because some

7 news. new details out of las vegas this morning. mandalay bay will no longer rent out the room used in that mass shooting. police say stephen paddock used a room on the 32nd floor to open fire on an outdoor music festival earlier this month. 58 people died as a result. mgm resort says it has no plans to rent out the suite in the future. no word whether it will be used for something else or be marked as a memorial. a florida father recorded video of a frantic effort to save his son from a hot car. >> right here, pull up on this. >> orlando firefighters worked to get the doors unlocked as the parents of the two-year-old boy tried to coax him to open the door. the boy's father said they were shopping when his son apollo had the keys in his hand and accidentally locked the doors. during the rescue attempt, the father was on the phone with audi trying to get the car maker

to unlock the doors. after half an hour with the boy sweating and crying, fire crews smashed a window. >> baby! >> rachel, let's get his temperature. >> well, paramedics examined apollo who, fortunately, was not hurt. the father says he recorded a portion of the rescue and shared it on facebook to thank first responders and warn people of the dangers of leaving a child inside a car. still ahead on abc 7 mornings, two east bay universities are trying to solve separate problems by working together. the unique partnership that could lead to exciting new opportunities for thousands of students. and here is a live look from our sutro tower camera. a heat wave as we begin this week. records could be shattered. mike nico will be along shortly

up and over it like waves crashing on the beach. pretty cool. i wanted to share that with you. let's look at our temperatures. most of us a little bit warmer this morning. that will translate to a little bit warmer temperatures this afternoon. still in the 40s. santa rosa at almost 50. we have hayward, oakland and san francisco about 57. here's a look at some of that snow still hanging around tahoe. it's not going to last much longer. looks like they'll warm up just like us. in fact, they're at about total sunshine. breezy in the hills thanks to the rain we had friday morning. extended near record highs for tuesday. let's take a look at what's going to happen on the coast about 4:00. that's when the breezes will pick up and that's when the temperature in the "day planner" dropped a little bit in that time frame. temperature today about 56 in half moon bay, 59 in san francisco. about 73 to 79 inland.

real pleasant afternoon. but the winds blow offshore and 70s at the coast, 80s at the bay and 90s inland. in fact, records are possible tuesday. look at the 90s in the south bay, the east bay, the north bay. even getting near 90 in hayward and santa cruz tuesday. if you're going to the game, 1:05 kickoff. 73 at lee have a stayvi stadium. about 70 in the shade. mid to upper 70s in the central valley. look at these, though, 90s. 93 in l.a. and palm spring. guess where that's coming? yep, that's the heat coming our way. because of the breeze and temperatures, we'll be in the microclimates. some of those shelter areas like san jose and san ramon could be in the 40s. let's take an extended look at my accuweather 7-day forecast.

very nice today. gorgeous day to be outside. it will still be nice tomorrow, it's just going to be a little warmer. the good news is at night it will fall back into the 60s and 50s because of these long nights in october. that's why it's nice to have a heat wave in october, because it always gets cooler at night. 80s and 90s on the bay. just a slight pullback on wednesday as the breezes are strong, but 80s to 90s on the coast and the bay, then friday and saturday we're back in the 60s and 70s for the most part as we should be this time of year. looking at halloween, temperatures in the 80s with sunshine. >> we like that. >> good. >> then comes my favorite part of the year, fall back. get that extra hour of sleep. >> that's the first weekend in november, isn't it? >> it's usually right after halloween, that's all i know. it's on a saturday. the small things in life, folks.

>> it's our holiday. >> thanks, mike. two east bay colleges have come up with an unusual solution to sniffer challenges. mills college and uc berkeley came up with a plan to share some facilities. lu ann menendez tells us some other colleges may do the same. >> reporter: mills college and uc berkeley plan to share some things each have. mills has small classes, unlike uc berkeley. >> the public schools face issues of enrollment capacity, and that's a place where i think the privates can really help. >> reporter: for example, an introductory tech class at cal tends to have hundreds of students. they can now enroll in that class at mills for a more direct interaction. >> the largest biology class is 40 students. >> reporter: the lack of student

housing has been an issue at cal. mills, only a half hour away, are offering rooms to uc berkeley students with a shuttle service. >> we have the ability to help everybody moving forward by relying on our strengths. >> reporter: uc berkeley can do study abroad opportunities. mills is having a decline in enrollment. they announced a 60% in tuition for students in order to have more sign up. this partnership is open only to undergraduate women. in oakland, lu ann menendez, abc 7
