another possible tornado hammered parts of spartanburg, south carolina. abc's meteorologist rob marciano has a look ahead. >> reporter: it's been flat out balmy in the east coast. and that's fuel as far as what happens with the tornado watch. we have the tornado watch across the carolinas into virginia. but this is a huge system that stretches into canada. d.c., baltimore, philly, all under the gun here, and the whole system is going to amplify, which means strong winds for all of the northeast. not just today, but the day after that, we could see power lines coming down with those strong winds. >> rob marciano, abc news, new york. >> our thanks to rob and to the west, they're facing the opposite. extreme temperatures and dry humidity. >> all of this increases the chance of possible fires there in southern california, at least from tomorrow, from santa barbara to san diego officials issuing warnings.

and new details are emerging about the ambush in niger. a senior intelligence official tells abc news the members were attacked by dozens of militants on a mission to capture a high-value target. the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff explained that the risk of an attack was low and it took a while for the troops to call in backup. >> the assessment by our leaders on the ground at that time was that contact with the enemy was unlikely. midmorning on the 4th, the patrol began to take fire. approximately one hour after taking fire, the team requested support. >> a u.s. drone arrived within minutes. a half hour later, french military aircraft mobilized to help. the bodies of three fallen soldiers were evacuated along with two injured troops, but sergeant la david johnson's body wasn't recovered for another 48 hours. >> and an american who survived

>> reporter: at the pentagon, the joint chiefs of staff offered the first official account of that deadly niger, saying the intelligence did not. >> the assessment by our leaders on the ground at that time was that contact with the enemy was unlikely. >> reporter: but abc news is learning much more about what really happened in the ambush that killed four american special ops soldiers and what their mission really was. it was october 3rd when 12 u.s. soldiers and 30 nigerians set out for a reconnaissance mission. but a senior intelligence official tells abc news they were given a second mission, their new goal to kill or capture a high-value target. they were supposed to be joined by a second u.s. team that never made it. but they were told to proceed on their own. the official tells us that mission was unsuccessful but exposed the americans to the enemy. the next morning the americans are heading home when they sense something is off. a village elder is trying to stall them. suddenly, 50 militants are upon

them, armed with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns, a sophisticated attack. according to the pentagon, one hour into the fire fight, the americans called for help. >> that unit thought they could handle the situation without additional support. >> reporter: a u.s. drone arrives within minutes, unarmed but able to provide video of the ambush. 30 minutes later, french military aircraft mobilized to help. two hours into the attack, those french planes arrive on the scene to provide cover. as night falls two wounded u.s. troops are evacuated. so are the bodies of the three u.s. soldiers killed in action, but sergeant la david johnson is still missing. his body would not be recovered for another 48 hours. >> from the time the firefight was initiated until sergeant johnson's body was recovered, french, nigerian or u.s. forces remained in that area. >> reporter: congress wants answers. but some top lawmakers admit they didn't know they were there.

minister who urged a diplomatic solution to the crisis with north korea. now during the president's trip, he will visit the korean peninsula, but he's unlikely to visit the demilitarized zone as other past presidents have done. a white house official says that's because of time constraints. in the meantime, the president's own personal lawyer will meet today with house investigators looking into russia's involvement in last year's election. michael collins was involved in negotiations for the trump tower. those talks ended when trump's campaign started gaining steam. in a statement last month, cohen said he had nothing to do with russia's meddling in elections. police in tampa are baffled. the city has add 1,000 streetlights to the area, and cops are advised to be extra vigilant. so far, the only connection appears to be all three victims were bus riders. abc's chuck seibertson has more. >> reporter: a packed room of worried and concerned neighbors.

some frightening moments played out over a neighborhood. a hot air balloon carrying five people landed near an elementary school near new haven. police say the balloon's basket got caught in a tree and the flame melted the balloon fabric. when the operator tried to use the torch to gain altitude. no one was injured. passengers on a jetblue fight had a scare of their own after a flight hit several birds and couldn't land. it had just taken off from boston when it suffered a bird strike to the left engine. but bad weather forced the pilots to fly to new york. after a nail-biting, three-hour low-altitude flight, they finally made an emergency landing at jfk. thankfully, the plane landed safely. jetblue hasn't said yet whether the plane suffered any damage. and some newly released air traffic control tapes are shedding light on another frightening mid-air incident.

>> this happened back in june. the american eagle commuter jet carrying 65 passengers suddenly lost cabin pressure. the pilot forced to quickly descend. the situation only got worse, as they reported smoke in the cabin and alerted air traffic control that they needed to land immediately. >> inbound, you got a blue streak 5559, an emergency. he's lost cabin pressurization, dropped down to 10,000 and they still have a passenger in the back who is passed out. so they're going to need medical assistance at the gate. blue streak 5559, you've got smoke in the cockpit now. >> the plane did land safely in selma, alabama, at the site of a former air force base. two passengers suffered minor injuries. >> how calm they sounded throughout that all. and british airways in the meantime, apologizing to passengers who say that an overnight flight left them covered in bites from bedbugs. >> a mother and her 7-year-old daughter and at least one other passenger said they walked off
