the man with a voice so bad it deserved a ticket from police. and we do say good morning, everyone, on this tuesday. it has been a rough overnight for millions of people in the southeast. >> parts of georgia and the carolinas were under tornado watches overnight following a day of severe storms that uprooted trees, knocked out powers to tens of thousands of customers and damaged homes. >> and it's not over yet. we take a look at the radar at this hour, and it shows that line of storms stretching nearly 800 miles up to lake erie, and it's marching east. this morning, millions on alert. severe storms spawning at least six tornadoes in the south. >> look at that. this is really bad. >> reporter: this building in spartanburg, south carolina, flattened. and this tree crashing into a home. the man taking the video says he was standing on the porch

moments before it happened. at this airport northwest of charlotte, the high winds ripping apart one of the hangars overturning planes, even causing a car to flip on its side. darrin smith was in the hangar next door. >> i was just worried about, you know, trying to save myself, and all i saw is that wall of water come through, and then it flipped that hangar over the hangar that's still standing. >> a few miles away, freddie adrian was watching tv in his bedroom. he left just in time as a tree came crashing down on top of his home. >> i give thanks to god, you know, i'm alive. >> reporter: and now the severe threat is on the move and will cause problems in the northeast according to abc's rob marciano. >> it'll push off towards the north and east. and as it does so, d.c., baltimore, philly, new york city, all under the gun here and this whole system is going to amplify, which means strong winds for all of the northeast. >> and some areas could get up to 3 inches of rain by the time it's all over. at one point more than 100,000 power outages were reported in the carolinas alone.

and now to the investigation into that deadly ambush on u.s. troops in niger. we now know that four americans killed were part of a team tracking down a high-profile target, and we're also getting some details of the heroic actions of sergeant la david johnson as his wife breaks her silence and president trump weighs in on twitter. abc's serena marshall has all the new details for us. serena, good morning. >> reporter: kendis, diane, good morning. it was a rare moment to see the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff speaking before the press and admitting that questions still remain into that deadly ambush, but they owe the american people and the families answers. it's the first chilling account of a mission gone wrong. it all began o it all began october 3rd for a reconnaissance mission considered so low risk, they didn't have armored vehicles or drones. >> the assessment was that contact with the enemy was unlikely. >> reporter: but that low-risk mission changed, a senior intelligence official tells abc news, to a kill or capture mission of a high-value target with ties to both al qaeda and isis.

the next morning awake more than 24 hours leaving this village 50 miles from base, something went terribly wrong. >> midmorning on october 4th the patrol began to take fire as they were returning to their operating base. >> reporter: they'd only gone a few hundred yards when 50 militants attacked using rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns. >> one hour after taking fire the team requested support. my judgment would be that that unit thought they could handle the situation without additional support. >> reporter: an unarmed drone arrived within minutes of that call. 30 minutes later french military aircraft moved in, and two hours later french planes on the scene. when it was over, four americans killed by the isis-linked militants, three evacuated immediately but one, sergeant la david johnson, still missing. his wife seeking answers. >> i want to know why it took them 48 hours to find my husband. >> reporter: and another soldier's family also speaking out, staff sergeant dustin wright's family saying in a statement, our hope through this tragedy is to discern where, if any, mistakes were made and to

fix them going forward. president trump has yet to say anything on the specifics of the ambush, but one of the survivors tell us, if it wasn't for the french, it's unlikely anyone would have survived that night. kendis, diane. >> serena, thank you, and johnson's widow has said she wants him to be remembered as a loving father and husband. the family of a u.s. soldier killed in afghanistan in the meantime, has now received the personal check promised months ago. the president called army sergeant dillon baldridge's family in july and told them he would send the family a check for $25,000. they got a letter and no check until yesterday. it was dated last wednesday. that's the same day the white house was asked about it by "the washington post." the family says the delay is not an issue. >> it's been hard. there's been a lot of negativity, and that's really unfortunate because the whole goal in this pursuit is kindness.

>> and the baldridge family says they plan to use the president's gift to start a nonprofit organization to make american flags and work with schools. in the meantime, the president does head to capitol hill today to discuss his tax reform plan with senate republicans, a plan that he's actually hoping to sign by thanksgiving. in pennsylvania, the first daughter and special assistant to the president, ivanka trump, promised the tax cuts will benefit the middle class. the president is denying reports that the plan may reduce the amount of money workers can save in 401(k) plans. a suspect is now under arrest after a deadly shooting spree in northern california. alan ashmore is accused of killing two men, injuring a woman and a police officer and shooting at several others. the victims were attacked at several locations in lake county including a house, a car, a gas station and a winery. police say the 61-year-old has a criminal record, but the motive is still a mystery. and there's a new alarm sounding at fire stations across the country. cancer is now the leading cause of death among firefighters. a new study warns firefighters

are twice as likely to develop certain kinds of cancer than the general public. some at a young age. one factor is the burning plast they're exposed to at fires. many departments are now working to buy new equipment and follow new procedures to try to reduce that risk. now, let's take a look at your weather for this tuesday morning. record heat, low humidity and gusty winds forcing authorities in california to raise the warnings about fire dangers through tomorrow from santa barbara to san diego. that includes a citywide red flag alert as it's called for los angeles where it could be nearly 100 degrees for the first pitch of the world series tonight, a potential record, by the way. across the rest of the country temperatures will be more like october ranging from 49 in minneapolis to 71 in boston today. breaking overnight, a scandal rocking the world's most

political and financial motives. he also suggests the sexual misconduct allegations are meant to silence him and link him with harvey weinstein. and speaking of weinstein, more than 50 women have come forward accusing him of sexual misconduct. the latest is from a former assistant telling "the financial times" newspaper that weinstein would ask her for massages, walk around naked and try to pull her into bed with him, and a civil rights investigation is now under way into the weinstein company with new york's attorney general saying no one should be forced to cope with a workplace ruled by sexual intimidation, harassment or fear. and we're hearing for the first time from the pilots of an american eagle commuter jet that suddenly lost cabin pressure between new orleans and washington. the pilots also reported a brake problem and smoke inside the plane. one passenger passed out, and the crew also lost contact with air traffic controllers, and yet in the midst of all this, they remained calm. >> yeah, inbound you've got a blue streak 5559. he is in an emergency.

he's lost cabin pressurization, dropped down to 10,000, and they still have a passenger in the back who is passed out, so they're going to need medical assistance at the gate. blue streak 5559 has smoke in the cockpit now. >> this happened back in june, but the recordings were just released. the plane landed safely in alabama at a former air force base. two passengers suffered minor injuries but kudos to that crew. >> yeah, and the passengers were taking photos afterwards smiling. kudos to them. puerto rico is 1 of the 238 regions and cities that have now submitted applications to host amazon's new headquarters. with the island's infrastructure in ruin, officials acknowledge it is a long shot. amazon is promising 50,000 jobs to the winning applicant. meantime, a group from little rock flew this banner over amazon's home city of seattle saying, hey, amazon, it's not you, it's us. they said little rock doesn't want the traffic an amazon headquarters would bring. arkansas is also home to

around the bay area. right now so far so good. a little slowing as you make your way through highway 17 through the santa cruz mountains with road work. and from our live desk this morning chilling new video coming in of a man accused of killing two people and injuring two others in lake county. surveillance video shows the 61-year-old alan ashmore going into a chevron convenience store yesterday in clear lake oaks. he was carrying a rifle, he steals a bottle of soda then walks out of the store. as he walks out he opened fire on the clerk and missed. the clerk who was licensed to carry a concealed firearm grabbed his gun, shot at ashmore, hitting his car and ashmore was on the run after officials found two homicide victims and two others including a chp injury injured. ashmore recently surrendered. his motive is still unclear. happening today, kate steinle's father expected back

on the stand in day two of the trial for the man accuse of killing her. steinle's death has been in the center of a national debate over aing wear cities. tiffany wilson live at the hall of justice this morning. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. kate steinle's dad will be back on the stand today, he was the first witness called by the prosecution yesterday. jim steinle held back tears as he described his final moments with his daughter who was shot while they were talking together on pier 14. during opening statements the prosecutor picked up the gun that killed steinle. diana garcia told the jury that jose ines garcia zarate shot kate steinle. >> the charge is murder and in this particular context it's in the second degree and what we need to show is that he intended to fire that gun. >> reprter: seconds after the gun
