"homecoming queen ♪ good friday morning to you all. we'll start things off with the highly anticipated release of the jfk files and the last-minute scramble to keep some of those under wraps. >> president trump ordered the national archives to publish nearly 3,000 documents related to the incident, but some 69 files remain sealed at the request of the fbi and

cia further fueling conspiracy theories and arlette saenz has more on what the files reveal. good morning, arlette. >> reporter: hey, good morning, kendis and diane. 54 years later there are still so many questions about the assassination of president john f. kennedy. these 2,800 new documents are a treasure trove of information for historians, investigators and even conspiracy theorists. thousands of documents shed new light on the far-reaching probe into the assassination of president john f. kennedy. in dealey plaza on november 22nd, 1963, the 35th president sat as an open target for assassin lee harvey oswald. >> president kennedy has been shot in dallas, texas. >> reporter: one memo from 1964 says investigators looked into claims oswald was an fbi informant. they determined he was not. another memo shows a 1975 deposition of former cia director richard helms. he was asked about charges the cia was involved and if there was information that shows, quote, oswald was in some way a cia agent. the document then cuts off.

two days after he killed jfk -- >> there is lee harvey oswald. he's been shot. >> reporter: -- oswald himself was gunned down while in police custody. the sequence of events fueled intrigue and doubt. that same day, fbi director j. edgar hoover dictated a memo insisting that doubt be put to rest. he wanted, quote, something issued so that we can convince the public that oswald is the real assassin. the release was 25 years in the making after congress passed a law calling for the release of all federal assassination-related records by yesterday. experts say the documents could show if oswald was tracked during his trip to mexico city seven weeks before the assassination and whether he spoke of his plan. the documents also could hold clues to one big question, did oswald act alone? >> i would like to think that these documents would be a final answer. realistically, that's never going to happen.

>> reporter: now, president trump bowed to pressure from the fbi and cia to withhold thousands more of these documents due to national security concerns. the cia says they have about 18,000 more documents that will eventually be released pending further review. diane and kendis, people are definitely going to be diving into those in the coming months. >> yes, of course, it's going to be a best-seller there. arlette, thanks. and the other big story on the korean peninsula. defense secretary james mattis has arrived in the demilitarized zone that separates the north and south. speaking with north korean soldiers just yards away, mattis said, our goal is not war. but he said the trump administration is committed to compelling the north to accept nuclear disarmament. >> behind me to the north an oppressive regime that shackles its people denying their freedom, their welfare and their human dignity in pursuit of nuclear weapons and the means of delivery in order to threaten others with catastrophe. we made clear our mutual commitment to a diplomatic solution to address north

korea's reckless outlaw behavior. >> mattis will meet with his south korean counterparts tomorrow. his visit to asia is is laying the groundwork for president trump's trip next month. let's go to the opioid crisis and the fallout to declare a health emergency. his announcement came as the billionaire ceo of a drug company was arrested on thursday. he's accused of using fraud to sell a narcotic 80 times more power fowl than morphine. president trump declaring a public health emergency calling opioids the worst drug crisis in american history. >> it's time to liberate our communities from this scourge of drug addiction. we can be the generation that ends the opioid epidemic. we can do it. >> reporter: the president's public health declaration means patients in rural areas can reach doctors and obtain prescriptions to treat addiction by phone or the internet. and it lifts bureaucratic red tape allowing more funding for treatment centers in all 50 states but the president stopped short of declaring a national

emergency instead calling it a public health emergency, which means his action does not come with any additional federal money to address the crisis that kills nearly 100 people every day. >> what i would say to the president on that is, show me the money. the president's statement or words are without the money. >> reporter: trump offering a personal story about his older brother who died of complications from alcoholism in 1981. >> he had a problem. he had a problem with alcohol. and he would tell me, don't drink. don't drink. >> reporter: the announcement comes as authorities arrest a drug company's ceo billionaire. he and other executives at insist therapeutics are accused of bribing doctors to overprevibe their drug subsys. >> he didn't do anything wrong. >> if convicted he could face 25 years behind bars. several other doctors also face charges. police in tampa are asking the public to analyze new

surveillance video as they search for a potential serial killer. the video shows a person wearing a hood running from one of the murder scenes. three people were killed in that neighborhood in under two weeks. investigators are hoping someone can identify the person in the video based on their clothing and the distinctive way he or she holds a phone. there are new questions this morning point $300 million contract awarded to a small company from montana to try to restore power in puerto rico. fema says it did not approve the contract with whitefish energy and has significant concerns. whitefish is based in the interior secretary ryan zinke's hometown. zinke is meeting today with president trump. now let's take a look at your weather. hot and dry conditions are fueling a wildfire sparked by a motorcycle crash in southern california's cleveland national forest. some evacuations are under way from nearby towns in riverside county, and the season's first major snowfall has created whiteout conditions in parts of

police in ohio in a high-speed chase got quite a whiez when they saw who was

behind the wheel, a 10-year-old boy. his mom said he stole the family car for the second time this month. police say he hit 100 miles per hour as they chased him through counties, two different counties near cleveland. police eventually surrounded him as he tried to get back on the road. to that unsolved murder of a prominent lawyer this kansas city. tom pickert was shot after walking his kids to school and his wife told police she heard a gunshot, went outside and found her husband. a spokesperson for pickert's widow says she remains strong even as police search for the killer. >> when i thought was so remarkable when i talked to her on the phone is how strong her voice was. i could hear anger in her voice. i could hear concern for her children in her voice. >> there was a man spotted leaving the scene in a van which has now been recovered there. it's registered to a man who opposed pickert in a nearly $6 million personal injury case. police say that man is not considered a suspect. a health care industry megamerger could be in the

we're back with an incredible story of survival. two women and their dogs were stranded on a sailboat in the pacific ocean for five months. >> and now we're hearing from those stranded boaters for the first time. they're safe on board a navy ship. >> the journey got off to a rough start when their cell phone fell overboard on their first day at sea and then things got a whole lot worse. for months jennifer appel, tasha fuivava and their dogs were alone drafting in the massive ocean after their engine broke around memorial day. they had set sail from honolulu in the spring headed for tahiti but with no engine and a broken sail rigging, they eventually drifted 5,000 miles to a completely different part of the world. they were hit by three massive storms and even survived two shark attacks. >> both of them, we actually

thought it was lights out and they were horrific. >> reporter: jennifer says in one attack seven tiger sharks came at night slapping their tails against the boat. meanwhile, the women kept using their marine radio to call for help but there were no ships within range until this week when a fishing boat heard their distress calls, and the "uss ashland" was sent to pick them up. >> how are you doing? >> reporter: as a small navy boat approaches, you can see the pure joy, clapping, huge smiles. even the dogs valentine and zeus seem excited. they survived thanks to having water purifiers on board and a year's worth of food including oatmeal, pasta and rice. as they climb on board, tasha smiles ear to here and zeus goes on board still in his life jacket. and jennifer describes when they realized they were safe. >> it was actually quite mind-blowing and incredibly humbling. >> the women will stay on

that navy ship until its next port of call. they're hoping to be reunited with their boat at that point then they plan to sail on the boat back to hawaii. >> i won't be there with them. no thank you. well, another hollywood director is facing a growing list of accusers. 38 women have now accused james toback of sexual assault. the reporter who broke the story says more than 300 have now contacted him about their encounters. actress rachel mcadam and selma blair are now among the accusers. toback who received an oscar nomination for the movie "bugsy" has denieded accusations. actress ashley judd is sharing her details of her ordeal with harvey weinstein and she sat down with diane sawyer explaining how he lured her to his hotel room 20 years ago and she says he then offered her a massage and then asked her to watch him shower. judd said she finally fled after making a deal with him that she would give in to him when she won an oscar. >> am i proud of that? i'm of two minds, the part that

shames myself says no. the part of me that understands the way shame works says, that was absolutely brilliant, good job, kid. you got out of there. well done. >> what would you say to harvey weinstein today? >> what i would say to harvey is i love you and i understand that you are sick and suffering. and there is help for a guy like you too, and it's entirely up to you to get that help. >> judd says at the time she didn't feel powerful enough to come forward and didn't know if she would be believed. a 10-year-old with cerebral palsy could be the subject of a controversial deportation case in texas. rosa maria hernandez was brought to the u.s. illegally from mexico as a baby. now, her status was discovered at a checkpoint as she was on her way to getting emergency gallbladder surgery. homeland security will now determine whether hernandez goes back to her parents who are undocumented, as well. she's now in a refugee shelter in san antonio in the custody of border patrol agents. researchers have uncovered a potential link between expectant

that we got of the suspects being arrested early this morning. san leandro police say they used something that sounded like a police siren to pull over a man near bancroft and 136th avenues. the man said someone got out of the car, put a hood on as he walked toward him, and that's when he drove off and called police. police say the suspect's car was later spotted for an unrelated traffic violation. and the driver was arrested then for impersonating a police officer. another man was arrested for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two juveniles were also detained. >> jessica, thank you. b.a.r.t. wants you to know riding its trains aren't free. i know that may seem obvious, but so many people are cheating the system, they'll soon be asking you to prove you paid. >> here is the thing, if you don't pay, you could face a criminal citation. matt keller live for us. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie.

if you pass through these gates you'd better have a ticket. b.a.r.t. will be cracking down on fare evaders. the board of directors approved it last night. here is the deal, once you're within b.a.r.t.'s paid areas and on trains you have to have proof of payment, either a valid ticket or clipper card. b.a.r.t. police officers and community service officers will be the ones doing the asking. if you don't have it, the first few times it's a $75 fine for adults and $55 for minors. you get more than two citations within a year, it becomes a criminal citation fine. not to exceed $250. b.a.r.t. estimates fare evaders cost $15 million to $25 million a year. the community service option will be available for juveniles and adults depending on the income level. enforcement starts on january 1st. reporting live at the warm springs b.a.r.t. station, matt keller, abc 7 news. thank you, matt. it's 4:30. let's get you a quick update on your weather and traffic. we start with mike. hi, mike. hi, guys. just checking o
