inside there's a lot of hugs today, that the kids seem happy to be back. heading back to school and worrying about things like homework feels a bit strange when you're dealing with the bigger life issue of losing your home. >> it's hard when the rest of the world is moving on not really noticing what's going on here, and then we're all in a state of, you know, devastation. >> reporter: yet coming back together and seeing each other is exactly what these teenagers seem to need. >> we haven't seen each other in it three weeks and, i mean, although i know that all my friends are fine, and, like, everything's okay, i want to physically, like, see them and hug them and, yeah, do all that kind of stuff. >> reporter: piner high school is one of 13 schools in santa rosa that re-opened today. the principal said they won't be throwing these traumatized kids right back into their curriculum, they will ease them back in and provide them space and counselors where they can talk if needed. >> so on a day like this, you lean more toward the heart. as you get back more into

familiar routines, you begin to lean more toward the head and the hands and start to kind of do school back like it was. >> reporter: he estimates more than 80 students lost their homes to fire. >> all i really grabbed was, like, my wallet and charger. >> reporter: nick howard is one of them, he's now staying at a friend's house. he says he's receive ed several texts from fellow students and teachers. today he can't wait to thank them in person. >> piner high school is a great school to have people come together and all the teachers texting me, they're, like, so thankful, they feel so sorry and giving me all their love and support. that's what the school is all about. >> reporter: administrators tell me several kids are already taken advantage this morning of having the counselors here. they've been gathering in the multipurpose room to talk and connect. they expect more kids will do that later today, they say that's fine. they'll be there as long as they need them. reporting live in santa rosa, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> i'm sure it's comforting to see their friends. amy, thank you. schools in kenwood also re-opened today.

you can see a couple more districts will re-open on monday. let's get to the numbers on containment. as we mentioned we do expect full containment by the end of the day for napa and sonoma counties. latest report has the nuns fire at 95% contained. atlas fire 98%. tubbs fire which burned between calistoga and santa rosa at 95% containment. the santa cruz sheriff's departmet is going to be releasing information today about a possible arrest in this fire, the bear fire. abc 7 news has confirmed the sheriff's office is preparing to arrest the person believed to have started that far. cal fire says first responders immediately knew this fire was suspicious. the bear fire is now fully contained. it burned just under 400 acres near the town of boulder creek. and new this morning, concord police looking for the car that hit and hurt a pedestrian. that collision happened just after 8:00 this morning on clayton road and ashbury drive. the pedestrian was taken to the hospital. police are asking people who may

have witnessed the collision to give them a call. developing news in the south bay, look at this restaurant in san jose on fire early this morning. this is at the kfc on cropley avenue near north capital around 4:30 a.m. no one was hurt. that restaurant was closed at the time this. is obviously going to have a big impact on the people who work there. our media partner "the mercury news" reports the same kfc burned in 2009. in today's fire, "the merc" said one person saw someone possibly wiroom snghi window prior to 91 >> the concerns we have, the fire started in the dining area, somewhat unusual. we're investigating origin and cause. >> no other buildings or homes in that area got damaged. and new this morning, the twitter war between president trump and a san francisco billionaire is now heating up. the president firing back at tom stier. the wealthy environmentalist is

spending $10 million in advertising calling for the president's impeachment. in the tv ad you see right here, he refers to president trump as a clear and danger. this morning, president trump had this response. "ba "wacky and totally unhinged tom steyer who's been fighting me and my make america great agenda from the beginning never wins elections." he fire ed back saying "i have been fighting your racism and corporate groveling from the beginning and always will." steyer sent out several more tweets urging democratic lay ma lawmakers to take action. jackie speier sending a me, too, story this morning. she was attacked as a congressional staffer and remembers the fear and shame. take a listen and a warning, this is tough to hear. >> i was working as a congressional staffer. the chief of staff held my face, kissed me, and stuck his tongue in my mouth. so i know what it's like to keep these things hidden.

deep down inside. >> and this morning, she also tweeted "many of us have a me too story because congress has been a hostile workplace for far too long. it must stop. it's time for #metoocongress." we are catching up with representative as she travels to tennessee today, we're going to have more later on abc 7 news. this morning b.a.r.t. cracked down on people looking for a free ride, a focus enforcement at four east bay stations. see them on this map. fruitvale, coliseum, east oakland and lake merritt. officers issued 25 citations and arrested one person. matt keller joins us at the warm springs b.a.r.t. station with what is coming soon. matt? >> reporter: fare evaders are a big problem for b.a.r.t., instead of paying for a ticket people are hopping over the gates. starting in january, the long arm of the law will actually be able to reach people in trains.

don't forget to take your ticket. b.a.r.t. is taking a new route to crack down on fare evaders. something they estimate costs the system $15 million to $25 million every year. b.a.r.t.'s board of directors adopted two ordinances last night requiring riders to have proof of payment when they're past the gates on platforms or trains. currently officers are only able to issue a citation if they see fare evasion taking place. >> i've seen that. >> reporter: you've seen people hop over the gates? >> yeah. >> reporter: what do you think? you're paying. >> yeah. >> reporter: they should pay too? >> should pay too. >> reporter: starting january 1st, b.a.r.t. police officers and community service officers will be able to ask you for your valid ticket or clipper card. if you can't, the first two times it's a civil citation, $75 for adults and $55 for minors. community service will also be an option for minors and some adults. a criminal infraction citation can be issued for adults if they receive two or more civil citations within a year. those fines can go up to $250.

it has been almost a month since we saw these terrifying images out of las vegas. people running for their lives as shots rang out at a country music festival. we know now it would turn out to

be the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history. what we still don't know is why, why would a sniper perch stories above, shoot into a crowd of people below? jessica castro is offer new insight as investigators work to get to the bottom of that question. >> reggie, tonight a special "2020" episode called "27 days later mystery in las vegas" tends to chisel away at that very big question of why. i spoke with abc news reporters about new clues and attempts to debunk conspiracy theories. it's been nearly four weeks since the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history when 64-year-old steven paddock opened fire on the las vegas strip. killing 58 people and injuring more than 50 others who were attending a country music festival. >> i was in las vegas and i actually lived in las vegas for five years. so this really hits close to home, in fact, i had some friends who were at that concert that night. the biggest question everyone has is why?
