live where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> the first indictments in the russia investigation, right now, former trump campaign chair paul manafort and lawyer are at the fbi field office after manafort turned himself in. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. we're tracking developing news out of washington, d.c., a bombshell in the russia investigation. president trump's former campaign chair paul manafort and deputy rick gates have now been indicted along with another trump campaign official. here's abc news reporter lana zach with the latest and reaction from the president. >> reporter: good afternoon, the charges against gates and manafort include conspiracy against the united states, false statements and conspiracy to launder money. paul manafort, the former trump campaign chairman, arrived at

federal court for his first appearance following the indictment against him and his business associate, and former trump deputy campaign manager, rick gates. the 31-page indictment represents the first charges filed against anyone by special counsel robert mueller. 12 counts include conspiracy against the united states, false statements and conspiracy to launder money. the indictment alleges that m manafort and gates moved money through hidden bank accounts and totaled $275 million allegedly flowed through the off shore account. it's unclear if today's charges have anything to do with collusion with the russians and the trump campaign. the indictment does not mention president trump, his campaign or russian meddling. m manafort repeatedly denied collusion. here he is in july. >> are there any ties between mr. trump, you or your campaign and putin and his regime? >> no, there are not. that's absurd. and, you know, there's no base to it. >> reporter: manafort was fired

from his post as head of the campaign following revelations about financial ties to the russian-backed government in ukraine. gates continued on with the campaign even after manafort left as chairman. gates also served as deputy of the presidential inauguration committee. now the president is weighing in on twitter, writing, "sorry, but this is years ago before paul manafort was part of the trump campaign. why aren't crooked hillary and the dems the focus?" the president goes on to tweet, "no conspiracy." but we're also learning about another indictment that has just become unsealed. george papadopoulos, early foreign policy adviser to then-candidate trump pled guilty to counts he lied to the fbi about interactions he had with russian agents. he's now cooperating with investigators. reporting from washington, lana zak, abc 7 news. >> lana, thank you. democratic national committee chair tom perez issued a statement shortly after the indictments. he says the charges underscore the seriousness of the investigation into donald trump's ties to russia.

he says it's time for republicans to commit to protecting this investigation and preserving the rule of law." we sent a push alert through the abc 7 app after 5:00 this morning when news of the indictments broke. you can download the app for free and enable push alerts for minute by minute updates. happening in san francisco, week two under way in the trial of the man accused of killing kate steinle. jose garcia zarate is charged with second-degree murder. prosecutors say he intentionally fired a gun at steinle two years ago while she was walking along the embarcadero with her dad. the jury last heard from the park ranger whose gun was used in the shooting. the defense said garcia zarate found it under a bench and accidentally fired it. if convicted, he could face 125 ye 15 years in life in prison. last night, san jose police called in help to try to get it under control. abc 7 news reporter matt keller

just spoke with a sergeant. he joins us live from the san jose police headquarters. matt? >> reporter: kristen, we learned this morning an officer was hit by a car during this operation and he was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. and i was just told by a police sergeant here at san jose pd that they're still looking for that driver, he's wanted for asau assault with a deadly weapon. sunday night was fast and furious on san jose streets. san jose police along with the chp, santa clara county sheriff's office and morgan hill police targeted racers and sideshows. >> it's not safe. >> reporter: this video shows the operation on hosteder road near 680. hundreds were involved last night and tracked some of them onto capital expressway. >> with the advent of how well people can communicate with each other, the sideshows pop up all over the bay area. and san jose is just like any other city in in the bay area. >> reporter: more of these sideshows are popping up in san

jose. this is video from october 21st and 22nd at highway 87 and skyport drive. cameras caught people spray painting the center dividers. roads were blocked off by the sideshow. traffic stopped. people walking putting themselves and their vehicles at risk. police ended up tracking some of the racers to ritter park drivet and brokaw road and detained them. over the past two weekends police say they arrested four people were reckless driving and outstanding warrants. nine citations were issued. and nine vehicles impounded. >> it really does create a danger to the public. and really should be taken off the streets. >> reporter: san jose police say operations like this one focused on sideshows and street racings will continue here in san jose. if they need more help, they'll ask neighboring agencies. reporting live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> matt, thank you. the search is on for the gunman who shot and killed a man in contra costa county.

a 48-year-old man was shot multiple times walking in a residential area on wild drive in discovery bay early yesterday morning. police say a group of men and a woman in their late teens or early 20s were riding through the neighborhood in two ca a disturbance over speeding may have led to a confrontation with one of the drivers. >> from what i heard is that the gentleman had thrown a cup. of ice at him and said slow down. they so happened to make a round around the block and came back and shot him. >> the sheriff's department is looking for a gray dodge challenger or ford mustang. and red mitsubishi eclipse. police are reviewing video of the shooting possibly captured by home security cameras. developing news, actor kevin spacey facing backlash for his response this morning. this after a fellow actor accused him of sexual harassment when that actor was only 14 years old. anthony rapp says spacey made an aggressive sexual advance toward him decades ago in 1986.

spacey says he does not remember the incident, in a tweet spacey apologized if he did behave in the way he has described. spacey went on to explain he's currently living as a gay man after having relationships in the past with both men and women. that's prompted criticism for spacey online with many saying he's using his sexuality as a cover for the serious accusations he's now facing. oakland a's catcher bruce maxwell is out of an arizona jail this morning after accused of pointing a gun at a woman delivering food to his home. >> hey, bruce, got anything to say about your arrest last night? >> no comment. >> maxwell was released on $10,000 bond and ordered to stay away from all weapons and undergo alcohol testing. police have not said what caused him to pull the weapon. maxwell made headlines last month when he became the first and only mlb player to kneel during the national anthem. and a's spokesperson said the team is disappointed to learn that the allegations and is

gathering information from the proper authorities before making any further comment. new details on the northern california wildfires. the death toll has increased to 43. a teenager from redwood valley whose brother already perished in the fire died as well. her family confirms 17-year-old cresha shepard died yesterday at a sacramento hospital. a ct scan showed her brain had been dead for some time. she suffered severe burns while trying to escape the redwood valley fire in mendocino county. her 14-year-old brother, ky logan, also died in that fire. the parents are recovering from burns in the hospital. all public school districts in sonoma county are back in session today three weeks after the north bay wildfires started. mark west, geyserville, and piner school districts resumed classes for the first time since the fires. two schools in santa rosa are closed indefinitely, riebli

this morning a mother's battle for her baby. a woman who agreed to be a surrogate gave birth to two babies then discovered one of them was actually her biological

child. jessica allen says she was matched with a couple in april 2016, she says one of their embryos was successfully implanted into her uterus. six weeks into the pregnancy, she says her doctor noticed something very unexpected and jessica eventually delivered what she thought at the time to be identical twin boys. >> i did notice one was much lighter than the other. you know, obviously they were not identical twins. >> one month later even more shocking news. a dna test confirmed the second baby was her biological son. jessica says after a complicated process, she and her husband got custody of their son. doctors say what happened was extremely rare. it's called superfatation woman continues to ovulate even after becoming pregnant, resulting in two babies. now your accuweather forecast with mike nicco. >> good morning, we'll open up the weather window around mt. tam, looks clearer around 2,600

temperature 56 at the coast. you'll drop down to 52 by the time we quit trick or tweeting. we'll drop down to 56. start out 63 inland and drop into the mid 50s also as we head through a starry night. nothing too scary about that forecast. this one, it's on the light side, a 1 on our impact scale for friday, saturday and sunday for showers, isolated downpours, breezy at times and highest amounts in our hills. we'll start to get a push of moisture that will lead to some drizzle, even isolated areas of rain friday morning. you can see how they're scattered throughout the day friday, with a little better push moving into the north bay at 7:00. little steadier rain during the evening and overnight hours into saturday. at least with this computer model, this one says it's going to be dry for the most part. saturday up in the mountains, it will be snowing, though. sunday we'll get a better chance of some steadier rain from the morning hours all the way into the early evening hours. the other medium-range model we
