mile finally stopping at chambe chambers street. the police shot the attacker identified as sayfullo saipov. >> he used a truck in the attack before he began running people down. maggy begins the team coverage with witnesses who described what happened. >> this was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly acty of terror aimed at civilians. >> reporter: police shutting down manhattan's west side highway in the shadow of the world trade center. >> he was running in the street. >> reporter: initial reports plowing into people and shots fired. people scramble for safety. >> i was walking down the road. i see who women with children,

so they're running. i hear one over the young girls say hee got a gun he's got a gun. at that point i turn around. around 30 seconds to a minute after that i started hearing gun shots. it have probably around five to ten gun shots one after another. very fast. >> reporter: police say the suspect got out of the vehicle with an imitation firearm and shot by police officers. he is now in custody. >> driver of the truck, 29-year-old male exited the vehicle brandishing two handguns. law enforcement shot the suspect in the ab doe meant. >> reporter: police and the fbi are now investigating. authorities have named the suspect as 29-year-old saipov of california. some of the bicycles

happened. right there close to a high school. police say the driver entered around there on the west side highway. children seen in the art area. 15 blocks until it stops right there when it hits a school bus. this you see right there is the bike path that we're talking about. this is where the attack happens, the high school. and this right there is the century beka bridge. of course you saw that in the video, that the the video today of this particular bridge with all the police there. all this a few blocks north of the 9/11 attack. crine sze, abc 7 news. >> this is sadly the latest in a string of attacks where terrorists use vehicles to kill people. you may remember 47 people died in niece, france where people drove a truck during

celebrations. >> about six months ago in london a man drove an suv along the westminster bridge and staffed a police officer -- stabbed a police officer before other officers shot and killed him. it was just this last august when a van plowed through a people in colombia killing a man. >> san francisco police put out a statement hours ago saying they are monitoring new york and that quote, no known threats to san francisco tip. more breaking news, in sunnyvale, police following what led up to a officer shooting. abc 7 news reporter chris wen is live from the scene. >> reporter: and just a few moments ago we learned one man is dead after an officer involved shooting here in sunny vale. sadly a canine officer passed

away due to his injuries earlier today. a look behind me you can see what's left of the crime scene. police have been going door to door canvassing the neighborhood and apartment complex. as we show you some of the video from earlier this started around 1:00 this afternoon where police received report of a stabbing here at the incasa apartment complex east on wood call driver. they made contacts with the stabbing victim, she went to the hospital with non-live threatening injuries. the sunnyvale department of safety telling us the suspect was armed and uncooperative. at one point he stabbed the cay indian officer. a police officers fired at the suspect who was then rushed to the hospital where he later died. back here live, an emotional afternoon as police continue their investigation, residence are returning home from the

evening. not really sure what to make of all of this, at one point we heard one of them ask if this was some sort of elaborate halloween decoration but of course that turned out not to be the police here investigating t crime scene. one person is dead after this officer involved shooting. a canine police officer also passed away. live in sunny vale. i'm chris wen. abc 7 news. a line of parked cars got in the way of a different truck. it went several blocks and stopped by vallejo. vic lee join us live from the scene to show us how this started and ended. >> reporter: deion, you can still see the remnants of the accident

police have towed the dump truck. it rolled down the hill, hit those cars, rolled through the intersection and finally hit a tree. >> very lucky. it was frightening. >> reporter: clara is one of two people injured from the accident. she was a passenger in this uber car which was hit in the intersection here. >> the driver seat came back i think and smushed me and pinned me back. >> reporter: fortunately clara and the driver suffered minor injury. the dump truck was parked a block up the hill. the driver was not in the truck. >> there was a gentleman in the back loading concrete. the dump truck was parked and the wheels were not curved. >> reporter: the truck was half loaded when concrete when it broke away and rolled down the

street. the run away truck kareened into about 8 cars parked on di vis disaster roe then smashed into the uber car. from there the truck hit another car on the other side of the intersection, mike lindsey's car and then a huge tree, which finally stopped its momentum. >> i saw the truck coming down hitting all the cars in front of me. then i tried to pull over, get out of the way and it got of turned and kd of head-on me. >> reporter: police hope this is the last freight on halloween. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> san francisco police say this man was stabbed and seriously injured a safety worker this morning. suspect michael peridot faces a long list of charges including a murder. officers tell us that victim tried to stop peridot from shoplifting when it happened.

the suspect has a long criminal record. and apparently so does his dog magic. this is the fourth time magic has been in impound. he was deemed vicious if august and should have been muzzled. it was all about the gun today at the kate steinle murder trial. an undocumented person shot k sk steinle on the water front a year ago. abc 7 news reporter lyanne mendes melendez is live tonight. the defense want each juror to hold the gun and pull that trigger to feel that force. the defense thinks this could be a defining moment for the case or in the case. the question is, will the judge allow this.

defense attorney matt gonzalez told reporters he personally has handled the gun used to kill kate steinle and found the trigger pool to be extremely light. he wants each juror to do the same. >> and anybody who believes this gun cannot fire accidentally i have no doubt that will settle it. >> reporter: gonzalez makes the case that even a child could have fired the gun easily. firearm's expert andy smith testified the gun, a 6-hour 2-39 does not have a light single pull. that's when the gun is cocked, the hammer pulled back and its ready to go. smith who works for the san francisco police department also
