was half a block away when the attacked happened and he posted a video of the quick response. >> he says he normally has coffee on the corner where this rampage took place and only missed being there because his dog pulled him into a park at a different point. he said he was still shaking when he tweeted this video. he praised the first responders. and this morning the suspect is in a new york city hospital. >> he is 29 years old, named sayfullo saipov, a native of uzbekistan and has lived in ohio, florida and most recently he and his family moved to new jersey. >> investigators say the van used in the attack was rented from a home depot in new jersey. we're learning more details and the international response overnight. >> abc's maggie rulli is live from downtown new york, just a little distance away from where the attack unfolded. maggie, good morning. what are we learning so far? >> reporter: well, as you mentioned, what we know now is that at least eight people were killed in this attack.

near the scene of the last terror attack in manhattan. abc's maggie rulli live for us. thank you. >> let's turn now to former fbi special agent steve gomez who is giving you a little bit of insight on what goes on in the investigation of an attack like this. steve, is there anything to glean from the fact that he rented the this truck from a home depot? >> yes. the fact is the home depot trucks are very large and powerful. they can plow through definitely bicyclists, people and smaller cars. as opposed to going and renting a car from hertz or a suv. those trucks are more attractive to terrorists looking to commit this type of attack. and it sounded like the deputy chief for nypd, jon miller, had even talked about how they had made these types of outreach contacts with like, say, home depot and the rental car companies to let them know, to look for people who are trying to rent vehicles such as this guy. this suspect here. >> and steve, i just returned from the scene or at least near the scene. there's a good stretch of west side highway, manhattan, that is still sealed off.

it doesn't appear they're picking up any evidence there. what could they possibly be looking at at this point? >> reporter: this is definitely a major crime scene from what i understand. the vehicle, suspect's vehicle traveled 9 to 15 blocks. and you don't really know exactly what they're looking for as far as evidence, but you know that they have to cordon off everything. they want to make sure that nothing is contaminated, as far as evidence. they don't want to ever have to open up the crime scene and then they have to close it back again. so they're being very cautious. good reason, this is a major terror attack, and they want to make sure that any piece of evidence, whether it was something that the suspect threw or something that came from the vehicle or one of the victims that may give a clue for them. they are going to want to make sure they capture all of that evidence and collect it and analyze it >> we're just a few days away from the new york city marathon. a huge event, how does this

affect security there? it was already going to be heightened. what do they do now? >> reporter: exactly. it was already at a heightened state of alert. they really have to look at this method of attack, using a vehicle, large vehicles or even small vehicles. we saw that at the ohio state attack several months ago, it was a smaller vehicle. it could be -- any vehicle can be used, but they mostly want to look at where are those crowds that are going to be congregate being, whether it's the runners for e mathononloers, where are those crowds going to be? are the crowds going to move, and are they in a position where a vehicle can get access and plow through those crowds. that's the main issue for them. the target is the crowds and they have to protect that. >> hopefully they can do that. steve gomez, thank you so much, our abc news contributor and former counterterrorism expert. >> and we will have continuing coverage of the deadly truck attack throughout the morning. so stay tuned.
