an immigrant from uzbekistan sitting in a new york city hospital waiting to be charged in the worst terror attack in new york city since 9/11. authorities say the 29-year-old suspect used a rented home depot truck to ram into pedestrians and bike riders just moments away from the world trade center. there you see the suspect running from police. he was taken down with a gunshot from an officer. we are continuing to monitor the situation. but eight people dead so far in that attack. turning now to russia and the probe and george papadopoulos. he's the former trump campaign adviser who's pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his

contacts with russians. >> this morning, new questions are focusing on who he reported to inside the trump campaign. here's abc's jonathan karl. >> reporter: he wants to sign tax cuts by christmas. but the announcement was quickly overshadowed by questions about the russia probe. >> are you going to pardon manafort? >> thank you all. >> what's your reaction -- >> thank you very much. >> your reaction to the guilty plea, mr. president? >> thank you. >> reporter: and on twitter, the president lashed out at former campaign adviser, george papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty to lying about his contacts with the russians. few people knew about the young, low level tier guy. he sat a few seats away from him during a national security meeting in march 2016. this newly obtained video shows papadopoulos at a rally for

greek mens last november, praising donald trump. papadopoulos told investigators that during the campaign he met with people he believed to have close ties to the russian government and even tried to set up meetings between vladimir putin and candidate trump. prosecutors say he revealed this to at least five senior campaign officials. among them, abc news has learned are are campaign chairman paul manafort, deputy campaign had manager, rick gates, campaign cochange sam clovis and the first campaign manager, corey lewandowski. lewandowski says he doesn't remember any of it. >> i think it's an example of somebody doing the wrong thing while the president's campaign did the right thing. >> reporter: there is absolutely no indication that it is the case. in fact, in some ways, it looks as if the mueller investigation is just getting started. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. and house republicans are delaying the rollout of their massive tax reform bill by a

elementary school. you can see the kids walking out. the 70-year-old teacher was rescued by police after nearly seven hours. the suspect shot by police and later died at the hospital. >> we were just staying underground. and just making sure that we were safe. >> it's one of our first grade teachers had a disgruntled parent. and just pray for her. >> such an emotional scene there for many of the parents. the teacher what not seriously injured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution. it's still unclear if the suspect was carrying a weapon. he has not been identified. family members say he had some kind of emotional breakdown, but quite a scene in riverside, california. over in utah where a suspected gunman at the university of utah is in custody after allegedly gunning down an international student and leading police on a 15-hour manhunt. 24-year-old austin butane surrendered to authorities at a public library in salt lake city after a librarian recognized him and alerted the authorities. he's also wanted for questioning in the murder of a 63-year-old

man in colorado. his wife is a person of interest in that case and is already in custody. meanwhile, police in tampa were on high alert for halloween in the wake of three unsolved murders in the city's seminole heights neighborhood. the interim police chief has been advising residents not to walk alone especially after sunset. this year, police, business owners and residents make an extra effort to make trick or treaters feel safe, including keeping popular areas security and well-lit. but still an ongoing manhunt in tampa, florida for what they believe to be a possible serial killer. >> police have received hundreds of tips there so far in the tampa area the seminole heights area. but think haven't tracked down anybody. they released that surveillance video but have yet to find a suspect. quite an abnormal halloween. >> made more distraught by the

breaking news on "world news now." terror in new york city. a truck used to ram people on a cycling path killing more tourists than americans. reports that the attacker is claiming he did it for isis. we have reporters standing by live with more. plus russia and social media were in the spotlight on capitol hill as facebook, twitter and google were questioned about ads from russian agents used to confuse voters. we'll show you some of the ads. and a major scare for wendy williams. she was in the middle of a live broadcast when she collapsed on air. now she's opening up about what exactly caused her to faint. we'll show you the video coming up on "the skinny" on this wednesday, november 1st. >> from abc news, this is "world news now." >> we do say good morning on this wednesday.

we're going to start with the terror on the streets of new york. >> a man who claim to the u.s. seven years ago and worked as a uber driver is now believed to have use add rented vehicle to kill eight people. >> and here is the suspect e fake guns moments after the attack. by the time this picture was taken, the damage was already done. >> here's the latest. at least eight people we're told are dead. of those, five were from argentina here on vacation. one was from bulge yumm. >> the suspect was shot by police. he is hospitalized this morning, expected to survive. more details on his past in just a moment. law enforcement sources say a note found in the truck said this was carried out or at least inspired by isis. >> all of this happening in an area so many people are familiar with. it's less than half a mile from the world trade center memorial. let's start with gio benitez. >> reporter: terror in downtown manhattan. this man accused of turning a

truck into a deadly weapon. >> we've got multiple casualties. this is a mass casualty situation here. >> reporter: at 3:05 p.m. hitting more pedestrians than cyclists, slamming into cars. at least 13 more injured. his truck colliding with a school bus, injuring two more children, coming to a stop blocks from the national september 11th memorial. >> he kept going all the way down full speed. and then the next thing, all i heard was nine, ten gunshots. >> a whole bunch of people came running past my way yelling, "he's got a gun." >> reporter: he's holding what turns out to be two fake guns. sources say he shouted "allahu akbar." an officer then shot him in the abdomen. this mother saying he pointed one of his guns at her daughter. >> i saw the man with the guns.

he pointed the gun at me. i'm sorry. i have to go get my child. >> reporter: hundreds of police immediately swarming the scene. shutting down parts of lower manhattan. a nearby school going into lockdown. chaos and confusion in the streets. at first, reports that it was a road rage incident, but then authorities calling it an act of terror. the nypd already on high alert for truck attacks. >> we have been tested before as a city, very near the site of today's tragedy. and new yorkers do not give in in the face of these kinds of actions. >> reporter: and we know that this was an especially dangerous situation, because so many students were already on the street. they were on their way home from school. this area is surrounded by three different schools within two blocks. gio benitez, abc news, new york. >> and singer actor josh groban

was half a block away when the attacked happened and he posted a video of the quick response. >> he says he normally has coffee on the corner where this rampage took place and only missed being there because his dog pulled him into a park at a different point. he said he was still shaking when he tweeted this video. he praised the first responders. and this morning the suspect is in a new york city hospital. >> he is 29 years old, named sayfullo saipov, a native of uzbekistan and has lived in ohio, florida and most recently he and his family moved to new jersey. >> investigators say the van used in the attack was rented from a home depot in new jersey. we're learning more details and the international response overnight. >> abc's maggie rulli is live from downtown new york, just a little distance away from where the attack unfolded. maggie, good morning. what are we learning so far? >> reporter: well, as you mentioned, what we know now is that at least eight people were killed in this attack.

nearly a dozen more injured. at least three of those still in critical condition. now among the wounded we have learned that five of those killed were in town visiting from argentina. they were here celebrating the 30th anniversary of graduating from high school. five of those people are among the dead tonight. now witnesses that arrive on this scene describe it as surreal and grisly, a mangled mess of bicycles and bodies. something that is very, very difficult to hear. and it's also hard to believe that this has been the deadliest attack in new york city since 9/11. >> that indeed, so many people shocked to know that actually

near the scene of the last terror attack in manhattan. abc's maggie rulli live for us. thank you. >> let's turn now to former fbi special agent steve gomez who is giving you a little bit of insight on what goes on in the investigation of an attack like this. steve, is there anything to glean from the fact that he rented the this truck from a home depot? >> yes. the fact is the home depot trucks are very large and powerful. they can plow through definitely bicyclists, people and smaller cars. as opposed to going and renting a car from hertz or a suv. those trucks are more attractive to terrorists looking to commit this type of attack. and it sounded like the deputy chief for nypd, jon miller, had even talked about how they had made these types of outreach contacts with like, say, home depot and the rental car companies to let them know, to look for people who are trying to rent vehicles such as this guy. this suspect here. >> and steve, i just returned from the scene or at least near the scene. there's a good stretch of west side highway, manhattan, that is still sealed off.

it doesn't appear they're picking up any evidence there. what could they possibly be looking at at this point? >> reporter: this is definitely a major crime scene from what i understand. the vehicle, suspect's vehicle traveled 9 to 15 blocks. and you don't really know exactly what they're looking for as far as evidence, but you know that they have to cordon off everything. they want to make sure that nothing is contaminated, as far as evidence. they don't want to ever have to open up the crime scene and then they have to close it back again. so they're being very cautious. good reason, this is a major terror attack, and they want to make sure that any piece of evidence, whether it was something that the suspect threw or something that came from the vehicle or one of the victims that may give a clue for them. they are going to want to make sure they capture all of that evidence and collect it and analyze it >> we're just a few days away from the new york city marathon. a huge event, how does this

affect security there? it was already going to be heightened. what do they do now? >> reporter: exactly. it was already at a heightened state of alert. they really have to look at this method of attack, using a vehicle, large vehicles or even small vehicles. we saw that at the ohio state attack several months ago, it was a smaller vehicle. it could be -- any vehicle can be used, but they mostly want to look at where are those crowds that are going to be congregate being, whether it's the runners for e mathononloers, where are those crowds going to be? are the crowds going to move, and are they in a position where a vehicle can get access and plow through those crowds. that's the main issue for them. the target is the crowds and they have to protect that. >> hopefully they can do that. steve gomez, thank you so much, our abc news contributor and former counterterrorism expert. >> and we will have continuing coverage of the deadly truck attack throughout the morning. so stay tuned.
