laive where you live, this s abc 7 news. >> a shootout in the streets and an officer hit by a bullet. it all right in the heart of the castro, where streets are still closed right now. what we're learning about the police encounter that quickly escalated. thanks for joining us today. the shooting suspect and the officer he shot are both in the hospital this morning. the exchange of gunfire happened in san francisco's castro district near 18th and diamond street. amy hollyfield is near that scene. let me start by asking you, how is the officer? >> reporter: hi, reggie.

the officer is in critical condition right now. he went into surgery this morning. so did the suspect. but a hospital spokesperson tells me they can't give us the suspect's condition because he is in custody. meanwhile, behind me you see that the scene is still active. they still have this area shut down. police still looking for evidence. diamond and 18th still closed. some residents in san francisco's castro district woke up around midnight to the sound of rapid gunfire being exchanged between a man and a police officer. >> all the sudden i thought it was m-80s or something going off. bam, bam, bammi, bam. it was really loud. >> reporter: police say someone waved down two officers who were on foot patrol and pointed out a suspicious-looking vehicle. as officers approached, they say a man shot at them, and the officers fired back. >> one officer was transported to the hospital for a gunshot wound. >> it happened right in front of

our house. >> reporter: doug says he is shocked this happened here. the castro used to be the scene of a huge halloween party, and violence sometimes broke out, but he says it hasn't been that way for years. >> the neighborhood has changed quite a bit. last night, you know, at 6:00 there were 3 and 4-year-olds out trick-or-treating in costume. surprising. >> reporter: diamond between 18th and collingwood was blocked off all morning with crime tape with dozens of evidence markers still on the sidewalk and investigators out gathering evidence. it was a lot for the neighborhood to take in as people tried to get to work, school, and church. >> it's scary. it's scary. and we have a senior center, so it's scary for old folks coming in. >> reporter: police have not said why that car was considered suspicious. they did go door to door overnight looking for a carjacking suspect, but they won't say whether that is related to this. they called off that search at 5:30 this morning. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news.

>> certainly thinking of that officer today. amy, thank you. flames rise into the early morning sky in san jose. it's a train tressel that you're watching burn in this video. cal train and union pacific run on these rails. matt keller is live in san jose with the commuter impact. matt? >> reporter: reggie, some trains face some major delays this morning. cal train says they're all back on track. the only issue is they only have one track. the flames were huge in san jose off mclellan avenue and willow street just after 3:00 this morning. they could be seen for miles around. in fact, the fire was first spotted by a san jose fire crew driving by on highway 87. a massive train tressel spanning across the guadalupe river was burning. >> 75 to 100 feet from the ground to the top where the train tracks are located. it's all heavy timber. it was about a span of about 200 feet that was on fire. >> reporter: it took firefighters about 45 minutes to

knock down the flames. they had to be extra careful because the wood was soaked in a chemical used to prevent rot. that created a breathing hazard. the good news, one tressel made of concrete was fine, allowing for cal train and ace trains to single track through the area. the damaged track is being evaluated. union pacific workers are checking to see what has to be done before the tressel can be reopened. cal train uses that track but says commuters shouldn't worry too much about delays. >> we've been single tracking through the area due to the los gatos bridge construction project. so we're not expecting too much of a disruption from where we've been at. >> reporter: san jose fire says they've responded to several fires in this area, often involving homeless encampments. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> maultt, thank you. developing news out of new york city. police say the new york terror suspect spent weeks planning yesterday's attack.

29-year-old sayfullo saipov drove into bicyclists and pedestrians just blocks from one world trade center in lower manhattan. that attack killed eight people pand hurt 12. authorities say the suspect carried out the attacks less than an hour after renting the truck from a home depot in new jersey. the new york city marathon scheduled this weekend is going to go on as planned. new york governor andrew cuomo and mayor bill de blasio said today that trump has not called them since the attack. this comes as de blasio blasted the president for his tweets on immigration this morning, saying they play right into the hands of terrorists. abc news reporter lana zach has the latest developments. >> reporter: washington today is reacting to the terror attack in new york. >> we're thinking of our fellow americans in new york. we're expressing our gratitude for the critical work of our first responders. >> reporter: but the news of the perpetrator came to the u.s. as an immigrant from uzbekistan, north of afghanistan, has

prompted president trump to call for changes to america's immigration policies, even going after new york senator chuck schumer by name, tweeting, the terrorist came into our country through the diversity visa lottery program, a chuck schumer beauty. i want merit based. >> diversity lottery sounds nice. it's not nice. it's not good. it's not good. it hasn't been good. we've been against it. >> reporter: and senator schumer, who was on that very bike path just last month, responded by drawing a comparison to the last time new york was attacked. >> after september 11th, the first thing that president bush did was invite senator clinton and me to the white house where he pledged to do what was ever in his power to help our city. >> reporter: saying president trump could immediately restore the anti-terrorism funding he proposed cutting in his most recent budget. >> instead of dividing, instead of politicizing, do something real, mr. president. >> reporter: president trump

also said he ordered homeland security to increase the existing extreme vetting program, but homeland security tells abc news no such program currently exists, though all visa holders do go through background checks. lana zach, abc news, washington. right before this newscast, jackie spear addressed the new york city attack during an appearance on "the view." spear praised the work of first responders and america's intelligence community for the job they do in preventing terror attacks. she also addressed president trump's call for extreme vetting of tourists coming into this country. >> extreme vetting is not going to solve this particular tragedy because clearly he had been here for seven years and had become part of the community. >> spear also addressed the issue of sexual harassment, which she detailed on abc. news last week. she spoke of an alleged incident that happened to her as a congressional aide in her 20s and called for changes in the way harassment allegations are

addressed in congress. of course, you can watch "the view" every weekday at 10:00 a.m. it airs right before us here on abc 7 news before the midday newscast. happening now, workers are rushing to clean up the worst of the north bay fire zone. sonoma county water officials are concerned about the rain in the forecast later this week. they fear toxic ash is going to contaminate local streams, so right now they're working as fast as they can to clear that toxic ash from debris sites. and speaking of that rain, all of us are keeping a close watch on what is in store. here's a live look at our east bay hills camera, showing clouds hanging over san francisco today. those clouds are going to usher in some rain before the week is up. meteorologist mike niko has a sneak peek. >> we're tracking the storm that is has yet to develop on live doppler 7. hi, everybody. here we are up in canada. you don't really see much of a curl as you would expect from an area of low pressure. what it's going to do is develop as it slides down the jet stream, past the pacific northwest, into our

neighborhoods. the first part of the storm will come in friday into saturday, at least the light to moderate rain. thursday night we could have some drizzle. about a quarter to three quarters of an inch in our lower elevations from the north to south bay. one to two inches in higher elevations. since this is november and our first storm of the season, make sure all the leaves that came down with the breezy conditions we've had, get those out of your drains and gutters so the water can drain. check your tires and wipers. and remember, slow down whith that first sign of rain. wipers on, lights on. i got a tweet that wanted me to remind you of that. >> okay, mike. thank you. new details on the rising damage cost of the north bay wildfires. california's insurance commissioner says losses have now topped $3.3 billion, and that is now more than the 1991 oakland hills fire, which had $2.7 billion and was the state's costliest. home and business owners have filed more than 18,000 claimed

related to the northern california wildfires. two young male zebras displaced by the tubbs fire that chased them from safari west in santo rosa are said to be doing well in their new home. the males have taken up residence at the oakland zoo. the 1 and 2-year-old males joined the zoo's two females. zoo keepers chose the young males because behaviorally, they'll fit in well with the older females. safari west did suffer damage to equipment and fences but not one of its 1,000 animals suffered an injury or escaped. three bay area tech giants on the hot seat on capitol hill. what they've been ordered to do now as the investigation into election meddling continues. also, racist posters popping up at stanford university. who's behind

facebook, google, twitter back on capitol hill again to testify about russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. new this morning, the three silicon valley tech giants admit the problem is much worse than first thought. with more on that, let's check in with jessica castro from abc 7 mornings. >> hi, reggie. executives of three major tech firms are in the hot seat as the intelligence committees investigate russian meddling in the 2016 elections, likening what happened to the start of cyber warfare. >> do you solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? >> reporter: lawmakers want to

know how facebook, google, and twitter were used to spread false information in last year's elections. and today tech executives revealed the problem was more widespread than we first thought. virginia senator mark warner and facebook's general counsel hashed out the numbers. >> the data on instagram is not as complete, but the data that we do have indicates that beginning in october of 2016, those instagram posts reached an additional 16 million people in addition to the 126 million people that we identify. >> so now we're seeing the russian activities roughly at 150 million americans, without knowing how many times they were we shared. >> the time period prior to october 16th where our data is less reliable would yield an incremental 4 million. so all told that, gets you to approximately a little less than 150 million. that's correct. >> reporter: all three companies say they're implementing new

policies to tackle foreign interference. still, they got scolded by lawmakers. california senator diane feinstein said she's disappointed in their vague answers. >> because you bear this responsibility. you've created these platforms. and now they are being misused. and you have to be the ones to do something about it. or we will. >> and warner, who's the vice chair of that committee, says russia's actions have exposed what he called the dark underbelly of the ecosystem social media has created. he also asked each company to start dedicating more resources to the problem. i'm jessica kracastro, abc 7 ne. posters and stickers from a white supremacist group were found on stanford's campus this week. the posters you see in this video are what

students found monday. most have been taken down. the group is pushing for a utopian homeland for whites. the group also participated in white nationalist protest earlier this fall in charlottesville, virginia. a new way to raise money for north bay fire victims. how a big-name brewery is now tapping into its best seller to generate some serious cash. also, major street closures are kicking in for downtown san francisco. the traffic headaches you can expect ahead of the annual dream force convention. and carl the fog is back again today, ushering in some changes for the rest of the week. mlgs mike new york koe has a look at rain in his full forecast next.

it is a sure sign that the holidays are near. you can now ice skate in the heart of san francisco. yes, ready or not, here it comes. abc 7 news was in union square earlier this morning for the grand opening of the safeway holiday ice rink. the cast of disney's musical "aladdin" was there to help kick things off. disney is the parent company of abc 7. admission for the ice rink this year is 18 bucks for adults, $13 for children 8 and under. i'm assuming that it's open if it drizzles a little bit. >> yes. >> is that what we're going to get, a little bit of rain, or is that ice going to melt? >> it will definitely melt some of the ice, but i don't think it will be enough to completely get rid of the ice. and there's always a line. >> super popular. >> pick and choose your times wisely. i saw walnut creek is opening theirs in about ten days. it's getting to be that time of year. we can't fight it. not that i'd want to. it's november 1st. hi, everybody. doesn't look much different than

yesterday, does it? got some haze out there, but it will be mild again today with our brightest day moving forward. more fog tonight and cool once again. the weekend not a complete washout. high pressure still holding on. the winds on live doppler 7, less than 5 miles an hour. variable in most areas. temperatures right now in the upper 50s to mid-60s. very delightful day unfolding right now. it'll take us to the 70s. low to mid-70s inland. low 60s in the north bay. san francisco, 64 around the rest of the bay. you can definitely see the haze hanging out there. hard to see the golden gate bridge. as we go through your 12-hour day planner, inland temperatures are top. 67 at 4:00. 50 at 12:00. we'll start to see a little bit of fog around the bay and the coast develop by noon. it'll take a little longer to get inland.

temperatures at the coast, 60 then dropping down to 52 this evening. if you have some errands to run tonight, maybe holiday shopping, some people are doing it, my wife, you may want to take a coat. temperatures tonight, mid-40s to low 50s. about 44 to 52 degrees. so let's take a look at what's going on. there will be an influx of moisture, more humid thursday once the sun sets. light drizzle is possible. that will continue, drizzle with scattered light rain through the commute friday morning. i think we'll see a little bit steadier of light to possibly moderate rain friday evening through saturday morning. fingers crossed, most of saturday is looking pretty dry. by sunday afternoon, we see some light to moderate rain move into the north bay then slide out of the south bay right as the commute ends monday morning. so rainfall amounts, east bay and south bay nothing to worry about friday morning, but by the evening hours, you can see about a tenth to a quarter of an inch. saturday, a quarter to three-quarters of an inch, make
