>> reporter: there's a growing memorial here at the public safety department. behind me, there are some flowers as well as a box of doggie treats that have been left in honor of canine jax who had been with the department for more than two years. at the sunnyvale department of public safety, this flag flies at half-staff. >> the idea that someone would lash out and essentially murder a poor defenseless animal like that was terribly shocking. >> public safety officials confirming the death of canine jafl. a beloved police dog who died in the line of duty. >> a huge void in our hearts. our canines are be only our department members, but they're also family members. >> tuesday afternoon, officers responded to the encasa apartment company after getting a report of a stabbing. upon arrival, they found the 25-year-old female victim outside with a stab wound to her

abdomen. officers entered the residence. the boyfriend stabbed canine jax with a knife. his handler wasn't hurt. the department says they attempted to negotiate with the suspect but he threw his knife at officers. at which point, the lieutenant, a 19-year veteran, fired a weapon in self-defense. he was taken to a hospital where he later died. the neighbors are still shaken by what occurred but say times lying these put things into perspective. >> when something like this happens, the importance of being connected as a community so we're able to help each other as we need to. >> lieutenant larkin has been placed on paid administrative leave which is standard protocol. details for the proceed session and funeral will be released later this week. and we're getting our first look at a man wanted or the gunning down a discovery bay

man. they say brayan zavala is wanted for hollis. they say this is his car. a 2005 c-240 mercedes-benz. he is accused of shooting and killing bradley mchue last weekend after he confronted them about speeding through the neighborhood. his friends have set up this fundraising page to raise money for the family. they are less than $600 for the $20,000 goal. >> three teenagers died after a crash in unincorporated san mateo county. it careened south of bear gull which road sometime overnight. sky 7 was over the remote stretch of road today. authorities did not get a call about the crash until this morning. they say a hyundai with three young men inside crashed into a tree and went about 50 feet down an embankment. as you can see, the driver was a

redwood city man. the two passengers were from redwood city and menlo >> eight people were killed on a nearby city bike path. sayfullo saipov appeared in court moments ago arriving in a wheel chair. authorities say the 29-year-old spent weeks planning the attack and bragged about it from his hospital bed. a police officer shot him in the stomach yesterday. that new york city office here fired the shot humbly thanked the public today for the support he's received. >> although i feel we were just doing our job like thousands of officers do every day, i understand the importance of yesterday's events and the role we played and i'm grateful for the recognition we have received. >> saipov came to the u.s. from

uzbekistan in 2010. authorities believed he acted alone but became radicalized over the last year. there's an outpouring of grief and support for the eight victims killed in the attack. most have been identified. more now from abc7 news reporter daria. >> reporter: five high school friends from argentina are among the dead after sayfullo saipov drove his rented truck down a west side bike path with the intent to kill. the attack inspired by isis. the men were visiting new york city celebrating their 30th high school graduation taking a bike ride together. a 31-year-old mother of two young sons here with her sister and mother also died while cycling. >> people get killed in terrorist attacks but this time it is very close. the second time someone from our village. someone escaped closely from the attacks in barcelona. >> reporter: and two young

american men. also victims. >> i'm absolutely hurt. >> reporter: darren drake from new milford, new jersey, his family heart broken. and nicholas who lives right near new york's greenwich village. >> he was my friend. >> reporter: over a dozen others were injured. some severely. nine remain hospitalized. four are in critical but stable conditions. abc news, new york. the police department has solved a cold case sexual assault. they said they used a new dna test and they identified keith asberry as a suspect. they say he was armed with a gun when he knocked on an apartment of two women. they say that he forced his way in, demanded money and jewelry and then assaulted one of the women before driving off.

today jurors in the kate steinle murder trial saw the video that slows the defendant lying and police lying to try to get him to confess. live outside the hall of justice with the latest from court. >> reporter: each side said they had their reasons for lying. now, garcia said he initially lied to police because he was sleepy. now, police say they lied to him, because it was just another tactic to help motivate him to get a truthful response. the lieutenant interviewed the suspect. he lied to police. he told them he was colombian when in fact he is mexican. and gave them a different nail. juan francisco sanchez. he told officers he was born in 1863. and said he was no where near

crime scene. police then took a different approach. they lied. they told him the firearm had been recovered, when in fact it was still in the waters of the bay. they also said they had a dna match and five witnesses that saw him at the pier, as well as gunshot residue samples that connected him to the gun. at the time, none of that was true. that seemed to work in their favor. when the police interrogator asked, why did you shoot her and throw gun away? he said i don't remember. >> police said you shot the gun. >> garcia said yes. >> police asked why. he responded, i don't know. garcia said he was aiming at a seal. when asked how far was he from kate steinle, he said, five to six feet away. it has now been established that steinle was more than 90 feet away. he told police he found the weapon wrapped in a piece of cloth and initially told they will, when he stepped on the gun
