good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top stories we're following right now on "world news now." terrorism charges have been filed against the suspect in the deadly new york city truck attack. investigators say the uzbekistan native had thousands of isis photos and even videos on his phone, including a beheading. two former trump campaign officials indicted in the russia scandal head back to court today. we could learn more about the finances of paul manafort and rick gates. they've been under home confinement since monday. house republicans gave themselves an extra day to get the tax reform plan in order. we're expected to find out a few more details in a matter of hours. the main sticking point is state and local taxes. and the houston astros are

world series champions. they beat the dodgers, 5-1 last night, setting off champagne celebrations in the locker room and no doubt across the city. the party continues tomorrow with a victory parade and rally in houston. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, november 2nd. from abc news, this is "world news now." >> we do say good morning to everybody on this thursday. we're going to start this half hour with the new details of a man accused of leaving a nearly mile long path of death. and devastation along a busy new york street. >> the suspect made his first appearance in court in manhattan on wednesday night. he was sitting in a wheelchair. authorities say he wanted the isis flag to hang in his hospital room. >> and they say he would have continued the carnage on the brooklyn bridge if he hadn't struck a bus. here's abc's maggie rulli. >> reporter: we're now getting a look inside following the deadly terror attack. >> i need an ambulance, right here!

right here! the guy t-boned. right there. >> reporter: authorities say 29-year-old sayfullo saipov had been planning the rampage for weeks, even conducting a reconnaissance run, renting a truck and visiting the very spot where he planned to attack. on his cell phone, officials found thousands of isis images and more than 90 propaganda videos. and a note left behind in his truck seeming to praise the islamic state. >> he appears to have followed almost to a t the instructions that isis has put out in social media channels. >> reporter: saipov moved to the u.s. in 2010 from uzbekistan, living in cincinnati, ohio, tampa, florida, and paterson, new jersey. with his wife and three children. it was here he rented that truck from home depot and began the deadly assault, traveling nearly a mile down a popular bike path. court records showing, he was prepared to go miles further into the brooklyn bridge.

had he not crashed into this school bus. officials credited officer nash with jumping into action, shooting and wounding saipov. >> i feel like we were doing our job. like thousands of officers do every day. >> reporter: saipov made a full confession from his hospital bed, saying he was proud of what he had done and asking that an isis flag be hung in his hospital room. >> this is the biggest threat we face in this country, individuals while in the united states become radicalized. >> reporter: security here remains on high alert. and saipov have been accused of terrorism, accused of exercising the most deadly terror attack since 9/11 in new york city. diane and kendis. >> maggie, thanks. the white house says the attacker is an enemy combatant and is considering sending him to guantanamo bay. >> here's abc's jonathan karl.

>> reporter: at a cabinet meeting, president trump declared that america must get tougher, calling the way the u.s. justice system deals with terrorists a joke. >> we'll have to come up with punishment that's far quicker and far greater than the punishment these animals are getting right now. because what we have right now is a joke, and it's a laughingstock. >> reporter: stark contrast to his response to the shooting in las vegas last month, when the white house for days said it was inappropriate to talk about politics or policy. within hours of the new york attack, the president unloaded in a series of political tweets. i have just ordered the homeland security to step up our politically correct vetting program. and he launched into an attack against new york's own senator, chuck schumer, tweeting the terrorists came into our country through what is called the diversity lottery visa program. a chuck schumer beauty. the white house insisted the president wasn't politicizing the tragedy. >> the president's not blamed senator schumer. and doesn't feel that the

senator is responsible for the attack. we believe very strongly that the individual who carried out the attack is responsible, and no one else. >> reporter: the diversity visa program, which was supported by senator schumer and signed into law by george h.w. bush, receives millions of applicants every year and provides visa to about 50,000 people, all of whom get background checks. >> diversity lottery sounds nice. it's not nice, it's not good. so we want to immediately work with congress on the diversity lottery program on terminating it, getting rid of it. >> reporter: the president said he would consider sending the alleged attacker to guantanamo bay. technically, he has the authority to do that. but if he did that, it would almost certainly face constitutional challenge. no one arrested on american soil has ever been sent to gitmo. it's just never happened. jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. >> it would be an interesting move there if it happened.

>> yeah. >> in the meantime, the president has spoken to his counterpart in argentina. of course this is about the five attack victims from that country in south america. they were here celebrating the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation. >> a 31-year-old mother from belgium was also killed. and the american victims were 23-year-old software engineer nicholas clevelands and darren drake, who was 32. wabc's michelle charlesworth spoke with his heart broken father. >> reporter: when jimmy drake says that's his baby, that's his only child, his son and best friend, darren, who was 32 years old and was riding his bike off west street about he was killed. what would you say to this person who did this? >> i'm not even angry. i'm not. i'm not. i'm not angry at all. i'm hurt. i'm absolutely hurt.

>> reporter: when his parents heard about the terror attack in manhattan, when and where it happened, only a few hours passed before, without hearing from darren, their son, they got in the car and drove 45 minutes to bellevue to see if maybe he was there. he was. >> just picture that face. he really looked -- he really looked like he was having a nice dream. >> reporter: darren drake was a graduate of rutgers university. he worked for moody's. he read all the time, went deer hunting and fish being with his dad and lived add home. he had his entire life ahead of him. to the other victims' families, his father has a message. >> your family did absolutely nothing wrong. they were where they were supposed to be in a marked, designated space. it's not like they were running across the street and get hit in traffic.

the man is a psycho. >> reporter: darren drake's father, jimmy, tells me his mother, his wife, barb a ra, planning their son's funeral. it will be this saturday had in new milford. michelle charlesworth, channel 7, eyewitness news. >> michelle, chaung. hard to believe what that family and the seven others dealing with this tragedy are going through right now. we're going to shift gears now. the u.s. has voted against a u.n. resolution, condemning the embargo against cuba. reflecting worsening u.s.-cuban relations. the general assembly overwhelmingly approved the resolution by a vote of 191-2. u.s. ambassador nikki haley says the u.s. will continue to vote against the embargo, quote, as long as the cuban people continue to be deprived of their human rights and fundamental freedoms. and navy leaders are recommending sweeping changes in training and safety procedures after two collisions this summer left 17 sailors dead. they say the accidents involving

>> reporter: police say the man on that stretcher spent seven hours holding a teacher hostage, barricaded in a classroom. liz reyes was in the office of the school when she says 27-year-old lavelle kennen burst in. >> he didn't seem like he was in a good place. >> reporter: the principal tried to stop him from getting on the campus. but moments later, a bloodied male teacher came in. >> he said that he saw the teacher, a teacher, with head locked, by this man. >> reporter: the teacher in the head lock? a 70-year-old first grade teacher named linda montgomery. >> she's been a teacher at this s castle view school since i was even in kindergarten, 27 years. >> reporter: s.w.a.t. teams descended. the students were safe. but police feared for that teacher. >> he wasn't allowing the hostage to communicate with us. so it just became -- her safety became peril. >> reporter: that's when the s.w.a.t. team decided to move in, killing kennen. the teacher was shaken, but physically unhurt. what continues to elude police

and >> reporter: teen girls offering i'm like, wait, is it? surprise details about their struggles. we set up a suite in new york and we invited a few to come talk with us unbeknownst to them, on the other side of this glass will sit their moms, listening and learning about their daughters. but in the adjoining room, girls would only see a mirror. >> how many of you would say stress is a big problem in your lives? your hand went up big time! >> reporter: the talk quickly turns to their biggest challenge right now. social media. research shows nearly a third of teen girls are suffering from anxiety. we wondered if their lives online adds to that problem. how big of a part of your lives is social media? >> i love social media. >> very big part. >> snapchat. >> my mom has my instagram password. so she'll usually see things before i do and she'll be asking the questions. >> reporter: questions about who

she's following online. all these girls are deeply plugged in. instagram, facebook, snapchat. 71% of all teens use more than one social media site. a way of expressing themselves. online they look happy. yet these girls say there's a dark side. >> a lot of criticism towards me on social media, but i choose not to pay attention to it. >> cyber bullying turns into real life and people taunting you while you're right there. >> reporter: and if someone says they don't like the way you look? >> i think i look great, so who cares what they say. but then it's like, wait, somebody just said that to me. are you kidding me? >> i don't hate my body, but i always feel like there's room for improvement. >> reporter: their honesty tough for one mom behind the mirror. >> a lot of my friends think i'm anorexic because i'm skinny for my age. it's tough, but you have to have a thick skin. >> i used to get bullied in middle school and in elementary school because i am a unibrow.

to another city trying to recover from a tragedy. new york city still reeling from that deadly truck attack. >> the suspect is now facing terrorism charges that could lead to the death penalty. the 29-year-old from uzbekistan rolled into the courtroom in a wheelchair to hear federal charges against him after telling investigators that he felt good about what he had done. court records also reveal that he wanted to hang an isis flag in his hospital room. that married father of three is accused of barreling down a crowded bike path in a pickup truck killing eight people and injuring 12 others. >> investigators say he rented that truck last week to practice and chose halloween to carry out the attack because the streets would be more crowded. they say he wanted to kill as many people as possible. abc's gio benitez with the latest. >> reporter: inside that horror following that deadly truck attack, a mangled school bus brought to a stand still in the middle of the room. >> can you call 911? oh, my god. oh, my god. okay.

i need an ambulance right here. right here. the guy t-boned. there's a kid right there. >> reporter: firemen and police rush in, working franticly to get to the children inside just moments after 29-year-old sayfullo saipov crashed into it. authorities say saipov had been planning the rampage for weeks, conducting prior reconnaissance at the very spot where he would drive on to that jogging ath. then on the afternoon of halloween, just after 2:00 p.m., renting a large truck at this home depot in new jersey. at 2:30 p.m., license plate recorder's that record every vehicle shows him exiting the bridge into new york city. minutes later, cameras outside of the holland tunnel show the truck swerving into the bike lane and mowing down pedestrians for nearly 20 ocks, almost a full mile. >> we've got multiple casualties. this is a mass casualty situation here. >> panicked witnesses say there's a man waving a gun in the street. reportedly yelling in arabic,

"allahu ahbar." >> i was frozen for a second of seconds and i saw him running towards a group of kids. i didn't know if he was going to start shooting, where he was going to shoot. >> reporter: police say saipov waving what we now know is a pellet gun and a paintball gun. one officer shooting saipov in the abdomen. >> one of those officers, ryan nash, takes action and fires his service weapon bringing the attack to an end. >> reporter: the suspect now on the ground, detained. in the wake of the attack, crumpled bicycles, some trying to help the injured. the engine from the truck that caused so much destruction still smoking. and inside the truck, officers finding knives, nor fake pistols and a note that said isis will endure forever. nine people are recovering in the hospital. one patient, a double amputee. authorities identified eight victims who will not survive, two americans, 32-year-old darren drake from new jersey. his father describing him as the perfect son. >> i'm not even angry. i'm not.

united states. >> yeah. they say he appeared to take instructions straight out of the isis playbook. abc's brian ross has more. >> reporter: federal agents and evidence technicians in protective booties swarmed the suspect's home in paterson, new jersey as his wife and three others weres courted from the home by the fbi. authorities say it is clear, saifullo saipov had been meticulously planning the attack, even rent ago truck for a dry run last week. >> he appears to have followed almost exactly to a "t" the instructions that isis has put out on social media channels. >> reporter: saipov made a full confession from his hospital bed even after be being read his rights, that he was proud of what he had done and asked that an isis flag be hung from his room. and they say he specifically planned his attack for halloween, knowing the streets would be crowded. >> this is the biggest threat we face right now in this country, these individuals in the united states who have become radicalized. >> reporter: the 29-year-old immigrant moved around the u.s.,

from tampa, to ohio, to new jersey. working as a uber drive and a professional truck driver. saipov grew up in tashkent, uzbekistan, living in this apartment building. and in 2010 came to america as part of the u.s. diversity vitae immigrant program for countries that have not sent many immigrants to the u.s. president trump revealed saipov had helped bring many others to the u.s. >> he was the primary point of contact for, and this is preliminarily, 23 people that came in or potentially came in with him. and that's not acceptable. >> reporter: u.s. officials tell abc news that at least two of those 23 connected to saipov were suspected of possible terror ties. federal agents say saipov was asked about those two men in 2015 but that no case against him was ever opened. saipov told federal agents he was radicalized over the period of a year all online. and agents said they discovered thousands of isis images and propaganda videos on his cell phones.
