reporting live, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. thank you. san francisco police are trying to figure out whether the carjacking of a taxi is related to a police shoot-out in the castro that left an officer in critical condition near 18th and diamond just after midnight. it started when officers were notified by a suspicious vehicle. it turned out to be stolen. when officers approached the car there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and at least one officer. both remain in the hospital and the suspect's condition is life threatening. about a mile away in the mission district a carjacked taxicab was ditched. it's believed that cab was taken in the castro right after the shoot-out. the connection remains unclear. neighbors say police searched all around the area yesterday. it is 4:30 now. let's get a quick update on your weather and traffic starting with mike nicco. hi, everybody. check out this beautiful picture

from the exploratorium camera at pier 15 looking back at an orange tower and a nearly full moon about to crest over the back of san francisco. let's take a look at your 12-hour day planner. temperatures a few degrees milder. low to mid-50s at 7:00. we'll hang around 60 all afternoon at the coast. you can see the bay, 64 to 66. inland, 62 to 65. and then at 7:00 we're looking at 55 to 56. notice we'll go from fog to increasing clouds as we head through the afternoon hours. hi, sue. pretty quiet at:30 on your thursday morning some road work in lanes. looks like a stuck camera on the san mateo bridge. we do have some road work around marina in the northbound direction and also from 237 to south fremont you'll encounter the cone zone so take it easy through there. we'll be back in a few minutes.

now to that deadly attack in new york city. president trump making a bold statement on twitter about the suspect accused of carrying out the incident. abc news is live in washington with what he said in response to his first isis-related terror attack as president. >> reporter: good morning, jessica. the president called the suspect an animal and lashed out at the u.s. justice system. he says the way the system handles terrorists is a joke and said he would consider sending that suspect to guantanamo bay. overnight the president calling for the death penalty tweeting nyc terrorist was happy as he asked to hang isis flag in his hospital room. adding, should get death penalty. >> we've got multiple casualties. >> reporter: president trump has continued. sayfullo saipov drove a large home depot truck mowing down pedestrians for nearly 20 blocks

almost a full mile leaving eight dead. >> we have to come up with punishment that's far quicker and far greater than the punishment they're getting right now. what we have right now is a joke. and it's a laughing stock. >> reporter: president trump taking a tough stance on the man labelled a terrorist, a stark contrast to the shooting in las vegas 30 days earlier when for days the white house said it was inappropriate to talk politics or policy. but the president hasn't stopped the political tweets since they started within hours of the new york attack. taking aim at the diversity lottery program that allowed the suspect into the u.s. seven years ago. >> diversity lottery sounds nice. it's not nice. it's not good, so we want to immediately work with congress on the diversity lottery program on terminating it, getting rid of it. >> reporter: and despite the president calling that a

democrat lottery system, that diversity visa program had bipartisan support and was signed into law by republican president george h.w. bush t. provides about 50,000 visas out of more than millions of applications every year, and everyone who is accepted gets a background check. reporting live from washington, abc 7 news. >> janai, thank you. and this morning we are learning more about the eight people who died in the attack including a mother of two young boys who was visiting from belgium. five others were tourists from argentina celebrating their 30th anniversary from graduating high school. also, two americans, a man from new york and another from new jersey. and also developing news from our live desk this morning, a third person has died after a shooting inside a colorado walmart appears to be at random at this point. it happened late last night in thornton just north of denver. witnesses say a man walked in

and opened fire. two men died inside the store. a woman died at a nearby hospital. the gunman escaped in the car before police arrived and this morning there is a huge man hunt under way. investigators are using surveillance video to try to identify him. no indications that this was an act of terror. i will be following the story. natasha? >> jessica, thank you. happening today nearly 2,000 oakland city workers are planning a e-dastrike. the strike is in protest of an unsuccessful six-month negotiation with the city over fare wages and work site safety. city officials say they're continuing to negotiate and want a prudent agreement. the strike will cause the following to close at 2:00. all head start and early head start centers, all parks and rec facilities and after school programs, all senior centers, and all public libraries. police, fire, and emergency personnel will not be affected by the strike. the fbi is investigating a death threat against the owner of oakland's ghost ship warehouse. 36 people died in a fire there last december. the bay area news group says a

threat was received after news reports that she could collect $3 million in insurance payments. 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. prosecutors have not cha ing. they say he knew about electrical problems at the warehouse. cal fire has a tally. >> the tubbs fire destroyed 4,658 homes including coffey park neighborhood. it burned 94 commercial buildings and damaged 23 others. the nuns fire gutted 639 homes in the glenallen neighborhood as well as parts of northeast sonoma. 73 others were damaged. and the pocket fire burned three homes and damaged three more. the damage from the three fires is the costliest in u.s. history.

a business recovery center opens in santa rosa this morning to provide information about government disaster loans and other help for those affected by the fires. the center is located on stony point road right next to the pg&e offices. tickets go on sale for a fire benefit concert in rohnert park featuring the counting crows. the november 18th show being presented by the family presents. tickets range from $50 to $150. the first repairs to the lake oroville dam are done before the storm. the repair work just completed is the first phase of a larger plan to restore the dam and its spillway to its original condition. record rain caused the spillway to erode and nearly fail in february. nearly 200,000 people had to evacuate for several days. the project will cost at least half a billion dollars. about an inch or two of rain

on the way for the foothills but notice once you get into the higher elevations it turns into snow starting at about 11:00 tomorrow night through 4:00 a.m. sunday. the western slope has a winter storm watch that will probably turn over to a winter storm warning today as we get within 24 to 36 hours of this event. up to two feet above 6,000 feet, maybe even three feet in the highest elevations. the thing you need to know, it's going to be a wet, heavy snow. 43 tomorrow. 40 on saturday. and then just some snow showers for sunday. getting there will be the hard part. getting home will be easier. here is a look at some of the totals as we head through saturday. you can see already a foot to two feet. and as we head to sunday into monday a weaker storm will add another six to seven inches of snow possible by monday morning. let's go up to the north bay. temperatures from 41 in novato to 51 in san rafael. vallejo, 48. 45 in napa.

we'll look at your north bay commute in a few minutes. the north bay smart train is looking to add a third car to accommodate strong ridership because of the recent wildfires. >> the marin independent journal reports smart has carried almost 138,000 people since its launch august 25th. they are trying to figure out which trains have the most passenger. the plan is to add a third car for two or three weeks to see what happens. we have new details this morning about tesla's layoff of 700 workers. elon musk says the layoffs are a result of annual performance reviews. news outlets report many of the workers laid off were openly supporting unionization at tesla's fremont plant. also said tesla will not meet his forecast of producing electric sedans a week by the end of the year. the milestone has been bumped to march. at the live desk i just got video you have to see. it's a daring escape after a woman was kidnapped and thrown into the trunk of this car. i'm going to show you the moment

kidnapping in alabama. it is making national headlines. i'm going to hit play here. you see the car pull up into a gas station, and she had been put in the trunk by a kidnapper. she had her hands tied behind her back and then she was put into this car. you see him get out of the vehicle and then walk into the store. and you're going to see surveillance video from the store as he walks around. and when we go back outside you are going to see the very moment she was able to get out of the vehicle. watch closely. there she goes out of the trunk and then she simply makes a run for it. you're going to see her go back into the store and flag down the employee there to try to get help. they kind of cross paths. you can see that they acknowledge each other and he makes a run out of the store. right now there is a huge manhunt -- there was a huge manhundred, i should say, for the suspect. but the good news is this suspect is behind bars this morning. police were able to get him and he is facing numerous charges including kidnapping.

some wild video to see this morning. >> that's crazy, jessica. >> i can't even believe what i just saw. only on abc 7 a san francisco police commander is talking about an upcoming vote on a controversial issue. the police commission will vote on whether to arm officers with tasers. it's been brought up but has failed due to opposition from groups. they are concerned they will be used disproportionately against minorities and people who are homeless. commander peter walsh responded to the concerns. >> we're getting as close to a policy we think that will work and help us mitigate some of the fears people have. the use lowers officer injury rates, it also lowers the injury rates to suspects. >> commander walsh says each officer would be thoroughly trained in the use of tasers. a warning if you shop at trader joe's. certain types of salads may be contaminated. you should throw out trader joe's broccoli slaw and kale

jose, janine de la vega, abc 7 news. skiers, like sue hall, will soon be hitting the slopes. >> i want pictures, sue. ski resorts in the sierra want to make sure you stay safe, though. abc 7 news is at the sports basement where the nonprofit group ski california unveiled a new safety pamphlet. representing 28 ski resorts. those resorts say they just want to make sure skiers are safe no matter where they're hitting the slopes. >> a lot of the stuff has a lot of consistency, what is in here, similar language you'll see at squaw valley and the intention was to have something that can consistently follow a skier from resort to resort. >> ski california is urging skiers and snowboarders to follow a smart system, start small, make a look, always look, respect, and take it easy. >> respect can be used no matter what we're talking about. hi, mike. start small, what? i'm going straight for the

moisture. watch as it comes down today. some drizzle after the sun sets. some scattered lightain through tomorrow morning's commute just about everywhere. the inland a east bay will be harder to get it there but scattered rain throughout the day as we head from friday and it becomes steadier overnight through saturday morning. but then again saturday afternoon into saturday night looks pretty quiet. sunday starting about in the evening hours a storm comes through but notice it doesn't look as impressive as it did yesterday. in fact, the whole entire systems, two of them coming through, look drier. i'll show you the rainfall totals next. here's a look at my accuweather seven-day forecast. saturday night into sunday looking quiet. sunday a little bit of rain in the afternoon and evening hours. monday quiet and another storm tuesda and wednesday. sue? we'll go back to the golden gate bridge. i want to remind folks up and over the waldo grade you have a right lane closed with caltrans doing guardrail work. the golden gate looks great, no
