we're back on that we're back on that unbelievable case in georgia, a dad doing everything he could to save his child's life. >> the little boy needs a kidney transplant, and his father is a match, but his father's criminal record has led to protests over what could be a delay for his surgery. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> this is a child's life we're talking about. >> reporter: outside this children's hospital in atlanta, protests are growing demanding that officials at emery hospital reverse their decision and give this 2-year-old a kidney transplant from his father. anthony burgess jr. was born prematurely and without a working kidney. he needs this transplant to survive. anthony sr. is a perfect match, but an imperfect father, spending the last few years in and out of jail on theft and shoplifting charges. he was arrested again for violating parole and released

happened during it. abc's ian pannell reports from niger. >> reporter: abc news has learned the target of that deadly mission that killed four u.s. soldierses. sources telling ice a kie isis operative. one of the most dangerous terrorists here in niger. this photo is the only known image of the man code named naylor road. local officials are now convinced he was one of the ringleaders of the ambush. now a major revelation. sources telling abc news it wasn't a reconnaissance mission as the pentagon still insists. here in niger, we met a senior officer who was on that raid who asks we don't use his name. he says it was not an intelligence mission, we were sent there to get dondu. during the operation, sources tell us, anxious nigerian forces asked for extra forces and weapons, but they say american officers turned them the down. >> so they didn't want to get reinforcements? he says he offered to get help, but was told it would be a waste

$59,000 should save about $ 1200 in taxes. >> but the mortgage interest deduction would be slashed in half, only applying to the first $500,000 of a home loan. well, they're mainly democrats as well as lobbying groups that are slamming the bill and some republicans are not on board. >> and the president is a few hours away from leaving the white house for a 12-day trip to asia. that's the longest visit to the region by a president in 25 years. on his way, he will also make a stop in hawaii. abc is already there. >> reporter: this morning, the president leaves the white house for his first stop in hawaii. he will visit the uss arizona memorial and receive a briefing from u.s. pacific command. then it's on to japan, south korea, china, vietnam and the philippines. the dark cloud hanging over every stop is the nuclear standoff with north korea. the president will be face-to-face with both allies and adversaries who have bristled at his free wheeling

this is 17-year-old noah salz who was injured in tuesday's terror attack speaking exclusively to abc in new york. despite his ordeal, noah ip sifrted on going to school wednesday saying he's working on a perfect attendance record. retireds, people. he was on the school bus when the attacker crashed his truck into it. and noah says he remembers every scary detail. >> i started to cry. and then i said let's just get out of here, quickly as i can. then i sat there for a minute and i heard a gunshot. and it was like really loud. >> and noah's father said he had just spoken to his son on the phone and suddenly, he was watching coverage of the attack on wabc when he saw noah on a stretcher just before he was transferred to the hospital. what a scary sight for that father. and now to denver and police on the hunt for a man accused of shooting people in a walmart.

>> the alleged gunman walked away from his roofing company job hours before the attack. let's get more from abc's clayton sandell. >> reporter: the man police say calmly began shooting inside this suburban denver walmart. >> i heard a shot, boom. i was like, what the crap is that? >> reporter: is in custody, accused of killing three shoppers, 66-year-old carlos moreno, 52-year-old pamela marquz and 26-year-old victor vasquez, fare of two girls, his fiancee pregnant with his third child. the suspect, scott captured on security cameras. but police say they had trouble identifying him in the footage because some armed civilians pulled their own weapons. >> as we were rolling through surveillance, we did observe others with guns. >> reporter: police and federal agents launched a massive manhunt, but ostrem didn't go far. a tip sent officers back to his apartment at the very same

moment his red hatchback drives right past s.w.a.t. teams and tv cameras. both catching up minutes later in rush hour traffic. ostrem has a history of arrest and financial trouble. in 1999, he was busted for possessing an illegal weapon and assaulting a police officer. the most serious charges later dropped. two years ago he filed for bankruptcy, listing nearly $86,000 in debt. ostrem is scheduled to have his first court appearance friday morning. as for an alleged motive, police say detectives want to interview ostrem and the people who know him to try to find a reason why. clayton sandell, abc news, thornton, colorado. embattled movie producer harvey weinstein is now facing a whole new kind of investigation. this time federal prosecutors here in manhattan are reportedly looking into transactions that weinstein arranged for an aids charity auction. according to the "new york times," the inquiry is focussing on possible fraud, after the $600,000 raised at the event went to a theater that had staged a weinstein musical.

officials in new york and l.a. also opened new investigations on weinstein stemming from sexual misconduct allegations. and actor kevin spacey is entering a treatment program. after several more accusers have come forward against him. actor anthony rapp accused spacey of sexually assaulting him when rapp was just 14. now staffers of "house of cards" reportedly say they were also targeted by spacey. he's accused of non-consensual touching and making crude comments. >> we're getting look at video of new jersey's first ladies caught the in a distracted driving. dash cam footage shows mary pat christie. when she was pulled over for holding her phone in her hand while driving. she did not identify herself as governor christie's wife. the stop took place as part of a safety program that was actually created by her husband's administration. mrs. christie pleaded guilty and paid a $215 fine. the police officer found out who she was three months later after the stop. >> good for her for not trying to pull the don't you know who i am card. she paid her fine. >> exactly.

a lot of people in washington, in the meantime, are hoping for some success with taxes. >> we're going to start with this sweeping tax overhaul bill drawn up by house republicans and the big push to get it to the president's desk by christmas. >> so president trump joined republican lawmakers to show off the postcard they say americans will be had able to file their simplified taxes on. they're vowing that the $1.5 trillion tax cut plan will deliver big benefits to corporations and the middle class. >> but some republicans aren't so convinced and democrats are calling this a bonanza for the wealthy. abc's la if na zak has the details. >> reporter: together with the president, house republicans celebrated the act, saying many americans will be able to file their taxes on a postcard. >> it will be the biggest tax reduction in the history of our country. >> reporter: among the major changes, the corporate tax rate will be slashed from 35% to 20%. the standard deduction for middle class families will roughly double from $12,000 to $24,000 for married couples.

and the child tax credit will increase from $1,000 to $1,600. >> with this plan, the typical family of four will save $1,182 a year on their taxes. >> reporter: but there are ways that americans may be paying more in taxes. mortgage interest deduction on future home purchases will be capped at $500,000. and state and local tax deductions will be eliminated and property tax deductions capped at $10,000, a blow to families living in high tax areas. that last point and the price tag on the cuts have some republicans expressing reservations. i think over ten years, we're looking at $1.5 trillion, roughly. but that's something we have to get our arms around. >> democrats say they're skeptical of a sweeping overhaul behind closed doors. >> they're ashamed of this bill. the republicans know the more this bill is exposed out there the less people like it. >> reporter: now the last time tax reform happened, it was a bipartisan effort that took

about two years. but president trump wants this one to happen in about two months, saying he hopes to deliver it as a quote, big, beautiful christmas present. kendis, diane? >> republicans are saying this is a complete redesign of the tax code. the president showed off this postcard, saying nine out of ten americans will be able to file their tax returns on a postcard-style system. and one of the reasons for the simplification is we're going from four -- to two four tax brackets, rather, instead of seven. >> it sounds and looks simple enough. whether or not they'll be able to pass it within the next two months as opposed to use years as lana was referring to, that's another question. and many people are thinking the longer it hangs out there, the more no votes they will get against it. some republicans are already saying they are definitely against it already. >> tax overhauls are very difficult to pass in general. >> yes, yes. >> the republicans have had their work cut out for them on this one, for sure. but always possible.

>> we'll see how it plays out. in the meantime, also in washington, the attorney general jeff sessions is coming under fire yet again, facing new scrutiny over what he may have known about any ties between russia and the trump campaign. >> sessions earlier had testified that he had no knowledge of any contacts like this, but that is now in dispute. documents released this week show campaign adviser george papadopoulos told the special counsel's office that he offered to set up a meeting between russian president vladimir putin and then candidate donald trump. >> sessions was in the meeting at the time. another aide said sessions shut down the idea. but lawmakers want him to clarify why he failed to reveal that information while he was under oath. and after calling the u.s. justice system a joke, president trump is backing off his threat to send the new york bike path suspected attacker to military prison at guantanamo bay. the president now says the process takes much longer than the federal court system. instead, he is calling for the death penalty. >> attorney general jeff sessions says when it comes to terror suspects, the administration is open to all options.

>> terrorists should know this. this administration will use all lawful tools at our disposal, including prosecution in article iii courts or at guantanamo bay. >> critics say the president's death penalty comment could taint the jury pool and allow defense lawyers to argue their client can't get a fair trial. in the meantime, a somber moment in new york overnight as the eight people who were killed in that attack were remembered at a memorial march and candlelight vigil. dozens of people marched on the bike path where the incident took place. ending up about a mile away from where the suspect was taken into custody. five of those killed you see there were from argentina. this young woman, a mother of two, and the two american victims were also remembered. one a software engineer and a master's degree student. concrete barricades are going up along the path to keep cars away from bikers and

joggers. new york city's department of transportation says it is installing the barriers in 57 different spots along that path which runs on manhattan's west side along the hudson river. abc news has learned that moments before the attack, the suspect made a phone call to a friend. law enforcement sources say that call is what triggered a search for that friend on wednesday. he, however, is not considered a suspect. and the president is involved in a new twitter scandal, but it actually doesn't have anything to do with anything he wrote on twitter specifically. >> okay. so this is a different one. after a morning of tweeting about the russia with scandal and other topics, his account vanished. around 7:00 p.m., visitors to @realdonaldtrump, sorry, that page does not exist. so what happened? >> it turns out, it was all due to one twitter staffer. through our investigation we have learned that this was done by a twitter customer support employee who did this on the employee's last day. we are conducting a full

internal review. so essentially, they had this person who had their last day of work and they decided this is the way they're going down in glory, they're going to disconnect the president's twitter account. >> so that guy or person is a hero to many people. other people are -- >> and an enemy to many others, right? >> also, what i found completely disalarming is that that is how quickly we can disappear from twitter, just one person. poof. >> it evoked this image of a person tripping over a cord. who knew this was that easy to do. >> just unplug it, yeah. our twitter life is fleeting. >> is there a button somewhere that just -- off, your account goes off, just like that. all right, coming up, the explosive scene on a college campus, a student now in custody after a device suddenly caught fire, forcing nearby evacuations. >> wow. and the new iphone officially for sale.

a former university of north carolina student is in custody after an explosion in the school's chapel hill campus. right now we're taking a look at some footage there from unc. police say it was caused by a small device and left one person injured. a short time later, a quarter mile area of a neighboring town was evacuated due to a suspicious vehicle. the bomb squad eventually gave the all clear. reports say witnesses felt buildings shaking and saw shrapnel flying from the scene. the business was closed at the time, but a number of homes and businesses were evacuated in atlanta.

and several teenagers who were accused of dropping rocks off an overpass will be undergoing mental exams. the five teens are charged with second degree murder for the at. police say they threw rocks at several vehicles and then went to mcdonald's. three of the boys will be put through competency evaluations. all of them will stay behind bars until their next court hearing in january. and officers are facing charges for allegedly dragging and beating a man who was on fire. the incident happened after a high speed chase ended in a fiery crash. but it turns out the victim was not the person officers were searching for. in a case of mistaken identity, eva pilgrim has more. >> reporter: disturbing video. new jersey officers dragging and beating an innocent man on fire. a six-mile police chase in june ended in a fiery crash. in the cell phone video, you see 28-year-old miguel felize escaping the car, engulfed in flames, ripping off his clothes.

jersey city police approach, one officer kicks him then another before the group of officers drag him into the street. but the police had the wrong man. the real suspect, 48-year-old leo pinkston had slammed in feliz's car as he fled from police. he was captured nearby. feliz, who was critically injured in the crash, has hired an attorney. the four officers are facing multiple charges. >> we think our actions spoke to keeping the public trust in the police department. we're not going to tolerate this. >> reporter: two of those officers have been suspended indefinitely without pay. two have been reassigned due to the internal investigation. eva pilgrim, abc news, new york. and now to the aftermath of the world series. it was obviously a rough night for anyone on the l.a. dodgers, but for one player the night got even worse. the home of outfielder yasiel puig got burglarized while he was playing in game seven which,

of course, the dodgers lost the to the astros. police responding to the house found a smashed window and several items missing. puig has only lived in that house for about a month. while he was away at spring training, another of his homes was broken into. nearly $200,000 in jewelry was stolen in that case. on a happier note, the astros team plane was greeted by water cannons at the airport after landing. mvp george springer carried the trophy off the plane lifting it for the fans to see and appreciate. this afternoon, a massive crowd is expected as the astros are honored with a victory parade and rally at houston city hall. the houston school district has canceled classes so kids can also attend the festivities. a big day for celebration in houston. and coming up, the countdown is almost over for iphone fans. many are waiting outside apple stores right now, hoping to get their hands on the latest iphone. we sent our own kendis gibson

oath. >> i have never met with or had any conversations with any russians or any foreign officials concerning any type of interference with any campaign or election in the united states. further, i have no knowledge of any such conversations by any one connected to the trump campaign. >> another campaign adviser says sessions immediately rejected the idea of a meeting with putin, so lawmakers want to know why sessions failed to recall that conversation. >> meanwhile, former tux campaigner carter page just testified before congress and reportedly told lawmakers that last year he told sessions about an upcoming trip to russia. >> and president trump's former campaign chairman remains house arrest. after facing a federal judge in washington. >> paul manafort was indicted this week on charges that included money laundering and conspiracy. yesterday his attorney tried to

explain why his client applied for ten passports. here's abc's pierre thomas. >> reporter: paul manafort and his former business partner, richard gates, fighting the prosecutors who made them prisoners in their own home. >> mr. gates, how do you respond to the charges, with sir? >> reporter: the tense hearing starting with the judge chastising attorneys for this moment outside the courthouse on the day of the indictment. >> president donald trump was correct. there is no evidence that mr. manafort or the trump campaign colluded with the russian government. >> reporter: judge amy berman jackson sternly telling attorneys to stop talking on the courthouse steps and warning that this is a criminal trial, it's not a public relations campaign. prosecutors arguing both men pose a flight risk and should remain under house arrest, laying out their case in bluntly-worded court documents. in the last ten years, manafort has submitted ten passport applications. he currently has three passports. he recently obtained a new cell phone and e-mail account under

alliaces he used in china, ecuador and mexico. gates had 55 bank accounts. manafort's attorney accused the prosecutors of overreaching, saying it's not unusual for someone traveling overseas to have multiple passports. also former foreign policy adviser, george pap done husband, quarting with federal authorities after engaging with the russians during the campaign and now a fourth man is making news. sam clovis, formerly a white house adviser, is withdrawing his fame for consideration for department of agriculture. it was clovis who allegedly encouraged papadopoulos to continue talking with the russians, writing in an e-mail "great work." >> our thanks to pierre thomas there in washington. and sam clovis said the political climate makes it actually impossible for him to go ahead as the appointee and do the job. the president was already under fire for naming clovis the chief scientist because he's not actually a scientist. all right. a new poll reveals what

might be some alarming results about the investigation. 58% approve of robert mueller's handling of the russian investigation. and 68% approve of the charges being filed against paul manafort and his associate. the abc news/"washington post" poll finds 49% of americans think it's likely president trump broke the law in connection with the possible russian attempts to influence the election. >> and the former leader of the democratic national committee is reviving a controversy surrounding hillary clinton. in her new book, donna brazile claims that the committee was rigged in hillary clinton's favor because her campaign was largely financing the party early in the primary season. >> now, brazile says the arrangement wasn't illegal, but it compromised the party's integrity. president trump responded, calling it real collusion, dishonesty and a major violation

of campaign finance laws. and house republicans are aiming to vote on their new tax plan by thanksgiving. president trump helped roll out the plan, holding up postcards that republicans say most americans will be able to use to file their tax returns. he even kissed one of those postcards to make the point. the plan cuts the number of tax brackets from seven to four. a family making up to $90,000 would pay 12%. up to $260,000, 25%. up to $1 million pays 35% and the wealthiest americans would still pay the same rate as they do now at 39.6%. the bill doubles the standard deduction, making it $24,000 for married couples, but adds big breaks for the rich, including repealing the estate tax after six years. democrats call the plan a give away to the wealthy and the powerful. in just a few hours, president trump leaves on a 12-day trip to asia. on his way there, he will stop in hawaii for a military briefing and a visit to the uss memorial in pearl harbor.

he will make stops in japan, china, vietnam and the philippines. he will have his first in-person meeting with the controversial president of the philippines. and the president's daughter, ivanka trump, arrived if in japan ahead of her father. she met with japan's prime minister and addressed a meeting on women's issues last night. japan's police created a special all-female unit guard for her. and the first lady during their visit. the unit's commander said their outfits tried for a more cultivated look to suit the occasion. a propaganda arm for isis is claiming responsibility for tuesday's terror attack in new york city, calling the suspect a soldier of the caliphate. >> the truck rampage left eight people dead and more than a dozen injured along a popular jogging and biking path on the west side of manhattan. abc's maggie rulli has the

latest on the investigation. >> reporter: new yorkers determined to take back their city. >> new york is stronger than something like this. >> reporter: walked down the same route that just days earlier had been turned into a path of destruction. this video shows some of the victims of that attack just before terror struck. a group of friends from argentina, smiling. around the same time, across the river in new jersey, prosecutors say 29-year-old sayfullo saipov was getting ready to rent a truck from home depot. he's now confessed he used that truck to kill as many people as possible in the name of isis. saipov moved to the u.s. from uzbekistan in 2010 and was currently living in paterson, new jersey, with his wife and three children. one neighbor took this photo in front of saipov's building on october 22nd. in it, you see a home depot truck. prosecutors say he used it to do a dry run of his attack. >> same truck, same model. >> reporter: now questions of a greater threat. saipov has helped more than 23 other uzbeks come to the u.s., including two men suspected of terror ties. >> one of the things

investigators will look at after this incident is whether there is any type of network or cell that's operating in this country from uzbekistan. >> reporter: new york city remains shaken from tuesday's attack. >> it really does hit, literally close to home. it could have been me. >> reporter: and while many victims are still in the hospital, one student who was injured made a point to get back to school, saying he still wanted to get 100% attendance. the city started putting up concrete barriers here along the bike path at the west side highway. 57 are set to get up eventually blocking entrances like the one behind me trying to prevent a repeat of the halloween terror attack. and police in chicago say a gunman opened fire in an uptown starbucks, killing one man and injuring another as well as a 12-year-old boy. investigators say the man who was killed may have been involved in a drug deal with the suspect outside of that starbucks when something went wrong.

now it's unclear if the injured victims have any connection to the shooter or those killed. doctors treating them say they are both in serious but stable condition. and more discipline may be coming for members of a miami firehouse accused of racially harassing a black colleague. six firefighters, including the former fire chief's son have been fired. they are accused of hanging a noose over the picture of a black lieutenant's family. lewd images were drawn on that photo. fire other firefighters may be suspended or demoted. so the this is a strange one. when you have a business that can lose track of a hippo, it's probably time to reassess your entire security. >> a whole hippo missing. here's the video. this comes from a safari park near tel aviv. this video's not in slow motion, by the way. that's the actual speed with which the hippo just walks his way right out of a security gate. the whole thing went down on wednesday evening.

we're back on that unbelievable case in georgia, a dad doing everything he could to save his child's life. >> the little boy needs a kidney transplant, and his father is a match, but his father's criminal record has led to protests over what could be a delay for his surgery. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> this is a child's life we're talking about. >> reporter: outside this children's hospital in atlanta, protests are growing demanding that officials at emery hospital reverse their decision and give this 2-year-old a kidney transplant from his father. anthony burgess jr. was born prematurely and without a working kidney. he needs this transplant to survive. anthony sr. is a perfect match, but an imperfect father, spending the last few years in and out of jail on theft and shoplifting charges. he was arrested again for violating parole and released from jail right before the surgery scheduled for october

3rd. that's when emery health care said no. explaining in this letter that the surgery was now on hold until the boy's father can show evidence of compliance with his parole officer for the next three months, saying they'll re-evaluate in january. >> everybody in the transplant unit, that's what they told us. everybody agreed to that situation. >> i want to give him my kidney. i'd go there right now and give it to my kid. >> reporter: health officials here appear to have changed course a bit, saying they will now work with the family, but saying they have to make sure that the father is able to manage any potential complications from his side of the surgery. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. >> what does that even mean? >> i guess after you undergo kidney transplant surgery, they have to make sure the donor can also deal with the psychological and physical repercussions of donation. it does all factor in. which is traditional in a kidney
