around the world are reacting to this latest act of violence. at least 26 people died when a man who used to serve in the air force dressed all in black, wearing tactical gear, walked into the church and opened fire. it happened in the town of sutherland springs just outside san antonio. the victims rage in age from 5 to 72 and include the pastor's 14-year-old daughter. the shooter is also dead. happening now, people have gathered across the street for a large candle lit vigil. abc news reporter linda lopez has the latest. >> be with us as we learn to deal with this in the days to come. >> reporter: families in tears waiting to see if their loved ones are safe. praying for everyone's safety. emergency vehicles pouring into the town of sutherland springs just 35 miles southeast of san antonio. helicopters air lifting the wounded to nearby hospitals. >> anyone in that church that died, we know they're in the presence of our lord jesus christ right now. >> reporter: the closely knit

town of about 650 people preparing to hear the names of the deceased. >> we all know and we're all prepared right now we're going to hear names and we're going to know every one of them. >> reporter: state and federal law enforcement officials say devin kelley of new braunfels, texas, walked into the first baptist church and started firing. >> as he exited the church, a local resident grabbed his rifle and engaged that suspect. the suspect dropped his rifle and fled from the church. a short time later, that suspect ran off the roadway and crashed and was found deceased in his vehicle. >> reporter: the first named victim, 14-year-old annabelle renee pomeroy. her father, the church pastor, was out of town in oklahoma at the time of the shooting. he wants the world to know his daughter was, quote, one very beautiful, special child. amidst the grief and tears, one woman says fate kept her alive. >> i changed my mind to go to church today. >> reporter: president trump in japan, reacting to the news. >> all of america is praying to god to help the wounded and the

families of the victims. we will never, ever leave their side. >> reporter: at a press conference a short time ago authorities did not release the names of any more victims. law enforcement now looking for a motive and searching the suspect's home. linda lopez, abc news, new york. >> with 27 deaths, this is already shaping up to be one of the deadliest mass killings in u.s. history. 59 people died in las vegas just last month. last year, 49 people were killed at a gay nightclub in orlando. 32 people died at virginia tech back in 2007, and then in 2012, sandy hook elementary. that shooting killed 26. in 1991, luby's cafeteria, that massacre took the lives of 23. 21 people died at a mcdonald's restaurant in san ysidro.

market. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard joins us live in redwood city now with the very latest. cornell? >> reporter: dion, eric, the name of the sheriff shaurergeant been released. meantime, a state senator wants to know why this type of theft keeping happening. >> shattered glass marks the spot where an unmarked san mateo county sheriff sergeant's car was broken into friday night. it happened on jones street in the tenderloin. guns and ammo ripped off. >> the first is going to be a shotgun. it's a 12 gauge pump action blue steel with a brown stock. then the second firearm is a colt ar-4. >> reporter: 500 rounds of loose ammunition was stolen too. >> an undercover car parked here with unsecured weapons in it. that's just crazy to me. >> reporter: this man says he sees car break ins all the time in the tenderloin. it's not clear where in the car the guns and ammo were left, but

those weren't the only items taken. oakland police put out this bulletin. >> >>. >> reporter: the fbi confirms the sergeant serves on its joint terrorism task force but the weapons and ammo stolen were not issued by the fbi. this gun and ammo theft is one of six in the bay area since 2015. the weapon used to kill 32-year-old kate steinle on pier 14 was stolen from a bureau of land management ranger's car in san francisco. >> it really begs the question as to when enough is enough. >> reporter: legislation passed in 2016 requiring both citizens and police officers to store and secure handguns in cars. >> you can't legislate common sense. law enforcement officials sadly are not getting it. they have to secure these weapons, and we need to do something to make that happen. >> reporter: hill will keep working.

meantime police are trying to recover the stolen weapons. cornell barnard, abc7 news. now to new developments in the north bay fire zone. the federal government has shut down public access to the journeys end mobile home park in santa rosa hit by the tubbs fire because of asbestos. abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley just attended a community meeting for displaced residents. she joins us now live with the latest. leslie. >> reporter: well, eric, you could just imagine how it is for these people, how they're feeling. they lost everything in the fire. then they come home on friday, find this red tape up across the entrance to the mobile home park. they're no longer allowed in to sift through the rubble for their belongings, and it's all because of suspected asbestos. 140 of the 160 units here burned to the ground in the fire here at journey's end mobile home park. several residents lost their lives. this is the view from drone view 7. you can understand it's been terribly traumatic for those who

survived as they look for housing. they're only now finding out they can't get in to get their belongings. why is the park condemned? >> right now we have identified 25 locations that contain material that potentially could be asbestos containing. but until we get our results back, we don't know for sure. >> reporter: distraught residents found it inconceivable they couldn't collect their belongings this weekend. so they came to this community meeting today for answers. >> i was worried about my stuff. but now i know they're not going to touch it or remove it. i'm better off knowing that. i'm just having a hard time with the whole thing, though. the whole fire thing, and it just is really upsetting me. >> reporter: the epa says they expect to get test results on wednesday. if there's no asbestos, residents can go back in. if there is asbestos, cleanup could take longer and could be more complicated as they draft up a plan on what to do next. the epa says they have inspected

and removed hazardous waste, household waste from 3,000 properties, and they have more to go. their inspections will continue. reporting live in santa rosa, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. police in pacifica are trying to find vandals who keyed dozens of cars this weekend. at least 20 vehicles were damaged along terranova boulevard between everglades drive and la rye da way. it happened between 10:00 friday night and 10:30 saturday morning. anyone with security cameras is asked to check their footage, and if it can help, share it with police. residents from several east bay cities protested against the planned closure of their nearest hospital. abc7 news was at berkeley's alta baits medical center where protesters of all ages marched against the hospital's owner, sutter health. sutter faces a 2030 deadline to renovate to meet new seismic standards.
