after leading bystanders on a short chase. tonight, a local sheriff says, there was likely no way for parishioners to escape once the shooting began. we get the latest from courtney fisher, who is in suterlands springs, texas. >> reporter: investigators will work through the night at the first baptist church. residents here in this small texas dotown are coming togethe mourning friends and family, who lost their lives. >> a vigil for the victims of the deadliest church mass mass s shooting in american history. the tragedy unleashing first responders and neighbors of this small town, 30 miles south of san antonio. >> we ran over there to help, as much as we could. >> reporter: families in tears outside the first baptist

church, waiting to hear about loved ones, praying for their safety. >> anyone in that church that died, we know they're in the presence of our lord jesus christ, right now. >> reporter: state and law enforcement officials say that he walked into the church, firing his assault-type rifle, killing church goers in the middle of sunday service. >> a local resident engaged that suspect. >> that resident enlisted the help of another local man, after kelly led the scene in his car. >> he said, we needed to pursue him. he just shot up the church. >> reporter: a short while later, the shooter crashed the car and was found dead from a gunshot wound. >> we don't know if it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> reporter: president trump reacting to the news. >> our hearts are broken. >> reporter: among the many victims, 14-year-old anabel renee pomelroy. her father, the church pastor,

was out of time at the time of the shooting. he wants the world to know that his daughter was a beautiful, special child. in sutherland springs, courtney fisher, abc 7 news. the air force confirms that devin kelley was at holloman air force base from 2010 to 2015. he was court-martialed for domestic violence against his wife and child. he was received a bad conduct and demoted. he was in new braunfels near san antonio. a neighbor said kelley seemed to be a normal guy. >> one of the heros who chased the alleged gunman said he wanted to keep others from being hurt, as well. johnny langandorf and another man chased after the shooter. >> my adrenaline is still coming down. it was a hot pursuit.

very fast. it ended quickly. >> the pair led law enforcement to where kelley was. he says he felt compelled to act, after hearing the gunfire. the shooting happened as many were going to service this morning. >> lillian kim is at grace cathedral in san francisco with the story. >> reporter: parishioners were told about the shooting during service here this morning the it was news the church felt compelled to share. at grace cathedral, what started a joyous celebration, ended with news of another church shooting. >> we just captized 13 babies in this font. by the end of that service, we found that even babies, an unborn child had been killed. >> reporter: the decision was made to break the news at the 11:00 a.m. service, so that the congregation could leave with the victims in their prayers.

and those prayers continued during the afternoon and evening services. parishioners who came later in the day, arrived with the shooting very much on their minds. >> it's very disheartening. you come to church for solace and some form of prayer and refuge. >> reporter: the shooting killed almost as many as sandy hook years ago. >> when someone comes to a house of worship, they find people in an especially vulnerable place. it's hideous. we've seen it in a kindergarten classroom and the country doesn't have the nerve to do anything about it. >> reporter: that's why the congregation is being asked to turn their prayers into action, to rise from their knees and, quote, work for change. with 27 deaths, this is already one of the deadliest mass killings in u.s. history. the headiliest was over a month

ago, october 1st. 59 people died when a gunman opened fire at a crowded country music concert. last june, 49 people were killed at the pulse nightclub in orlando. at the time, that was the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. the leaders of so many other communities, targeted by mass shootings, tweeted messages of condolence. las vegas mayor tweeted our heart stands with you and our hearts broken. the orlando mayor, tweets, our community grieves with sutherland springs. and former president barack obama tweeted, we grieve with the families of sutherland springs. may god grant all of us the wisdom to ask what concrete steps we can take to reduce the violence and weaponry in our midst. our coverage of the mass shooting in texas continues on

recover the stolen weapons. in developing news, one person has died following a car accident on the lakeville highway that involved a half-dozen cars. it happened west of sears point. that direction of the highway is closed as the crash is investigated. a medical helicopter has been called to air-lift a victim to the hospital. terrific is being diverted around the accident scene. parents in two east bay cities received letters after a middle schoolteacher was arrested. this shows where he taught. he is now on leave from walnut creek intermediate school. he served as a substitute teacher. martinez police arrested him on friday. they plan to share more information about his arrest tomorrow. if you plan on being in san francisco anytime soon, you will

dealing with devastation in santa rosa got word they cannot access their belongings. the flames swept through journeys and the mobile home park. and tonight, the residents are dealing with a new problem. leslie brinkley has the story from santa rosa. >> reporter: this was journey's end mobile home park in santa rosa. now, a mangled mess of burned- out debris, where epa inspectors found asbestos. >> we found 25 locations that have material that could be asbestos containing. >> reporter: the park was red tagged by the city on friday, which means those who lost their homes are now banned from
