november 6th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good monday morning. we're going to start this morning with yet again another mass shooting involving innocent americans going about their daily lives. this time, the gunman preying on a church in south texas. >> the 26-year-old shooter and air force veteran killed at least26 people and wounded at least 20 others at the first baptist church in sutherland springs, texas. president trump is monitoring the situation from japan, saying americans will pull together and stand strong through the tears and sadness. >> the president has ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honor of the victims. and the neighbors credited with ending the carnage by confronting the gunman and giving chase. >> reporter: sutherland springs, texas, a town in shock. overnight, members of this close-knit town of only 600 people coming together to pray

3:36 am
start and then shooting everybody else? it could also indicate, just based on his movement and the way he was, you know, kind of going in there, if he'd done reconnaissance of the church there. because that's a possibility. the fact is we were hearing that the church was set up to where it would be very difficult for, you know, the church goers to try to escape. so maybe he took the right position to ensure that he was going to be able to kill as many people as possible and they wouldn't be able to leave the church. >> most churches are not set up to have any clear way of escape when you have pews involved. it's one room. talk to us about the shooter serving time for domestic violence. shouldn't that have prevented him from being able to get access to these kinds of weapons? >> caller: absolutely. that is probably going to be
3:37 am
a -- just one of the biggest travesties of all, this whole situation if that is determined to have been something that was missed. if he was convicted, then the system is supposed to ensure that that goes into a database, the ncic system. that is checked when they do a background check for a gun purchase. and then a red flag pops up. if it wasn't entered, you know, we're going to have to try to figure out why it wasn't. but the typical response from my experience is that it's the bureaucracy. the bureaucracy is so large within the u.s. government and sometimes things fall through the cracks. but in a situation like this, you can't have that. because then what do you have? you have somebody buying a gun and they go out and kill somebody. >> and the system may have actually failed these people several times, because the local sheriff says they found several firearms in his vehicle there. take us through the investigation over the next couple days. what's the focus of the fbi and atf at this point? >> caller: they're going to be focussing on a lot of things.
3:38 am
the suspect's dead, but of course they're going to be very concerned if the suspect had received help from anybody in committing this attack. now first of all, they're going to want to figure out who purchased all those weapons, the one that he had, the ar-15 and also the ones that were inside the vehicle. now the fact that he had been convicted, he may have known that he would, or he should have had his name in the database that would have been red flagged. so there's always the potential that he had somebody else purchase some of the firearms. and those people could potentially be looked at as a straw purchaser. that could be part of the investigation. they're also going to be looking at a lot of his online activity. he's young enough where he appears to have had a social media presence and he was probably on the internet. so they'll be looking for all the research that he had done on the internet and particularly if he was researching other locations where he might have gone from the church and over to another location to commit another attack. so those are going to be some of the essential items, you know, on the list for the
3:39 am
investigation, you know, moving forward. >> and no doubt his wife will be interviewed, as well. >> oh, yes, all of his family. >> to see if she had any idea the that this was going to happen. steve, thank you. >> we appreciate it, steve, thank you. at least one lawmaker is not hiding his anger over congress's handling of guns in america. connecticut senator chris murphy posted this tweet, the democrat asking if his colleagues will be able to sleep when the price of gun lobby goodwill is a blood-soak the church. former president obama used twitter to say we'll grieve with the families. he also says he is praying, for quote, the wisdom to ask what concrete steps we can take to reduce the violence. >> similar sentiments from gabriele giffords. a former congresswoman. the san antonio area is just about 35 miles from where all of this took place. the basketball team there, the spurs, honored the victims with a moment of silence before the game. and after the game, the spurs'
