it's been called a jet-ski with wings, and now it's connected to three deaths. the latest, a baseball star who bought his aircraft from the bay area company that created it. good evening. i'm dan ashley. and i'm dion lim in for ama daetz. roy halladay picked up the plane here in the bay area less than a month ago. >> abc 7 reporter lisa ammin gulezian is in the newsroom with what she learned about the plane. lisa? >> reporter: the plane was an icon a357 icon is based out of vacaville. the founder is a stanford grad. and roy halladay couldn't wait to get his hands on one of these coveted planes. >> that is pretty cool. to think that i get to take that home is pretty surreal. >> reporter: flying was one of roy halladay's passions. it's one he could finally pursue after retiring from baseball in

2013. >> spins, fires! a perfect game! >> reporter: the eight-time all-star and two-time cy young winner played 16 seasons with the toronto blue jays and the philadelphia phillies. today authorities found the a-5 upside down ten miles west of st. petersburg, florida in the gulf of mexico. >> we know roy as a person, as a caring husband who loved his wyche randy. he loved his two boys tremendously. >> reporter: icon released this statement tonight saying, "we have gotten to know roy and his family in recent months. he was a great advocate and friend of ours. icon will do everything it can to support the accident investigation going forward." in may another icon a-5 crashed near lake ber yesa. two icon employees, a test pilot and a designer, died. the ntsb concluded pilot error caused that crash. >> they make it nice and big. >> reporter: pilot crystallin

rep flew the a-5 just last week. icon is located near nut tree airport where rapp works. >> it was really fun. got to land in the lake a few times. >> reporter: the a-5 costs $389,000. the wait list continues to grow. lisa a-minute gleulezian, abc 7 gnaws. a police chase ended with a crash near oakland's lake merritt. police captured three suspects just before 5:00 p.m. officers also recovered three guns inside a mercedes station wagon after pursuing it for several miles. a witness told us one of the suspects was badly hurt when another car hit him after he jumped from the mercedes. in the east bay tonight police have made five arrests in the murder of a concord teenager. 17-year-old lawrence jansen was gunned down monday afternoon while walking with friends near the continuation high school he attends. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is live at the concord

police department tonight where authorities say this young victim was targeted. >> reporter: dan, police believe these five suspects conspired to kill lawrence jansen. their names have not been released. jansen's relatives are demanding justice tonight. >> thank god. thank god finally. >> reporter: rhonda lechuga reacts to the news of five arrests in the murder of her 17-year-old nephew lawrence jansen. >> i don't wish them to be dead but i wish them to be locked up the rest of their life. >> we believe lawrence was targeted. >> reporter: jansen was walking with friends near olympic continuation high school monday afternoon when police say a black sedan pulled up, a group got out, and one fired on the teen. he died a short time later. police say the shooter is an adult but some of the suspects are juveniles. all five males booked for murder and conspiracy to commit murder. >> we are exploring all avenues that could help explain the motive of this case. >> reporter: police have recovered a handgun and getaway car used in the crime. >> it's just a tragedy for the

whole family. >> reporter: outside olympic high there are candles, flowers, and pictures of lawrence jansen. >> he was always there for me when i needed him. >> reporter: alicia perez can't explain why her close friend was a possible murder target. >> he's never been the type of person for anybody to want to do anything bad to them. >> everybody needs to grow up. they don't realize what they're doing until it's too late. >> reporter: police say none of the suspects has known ties to street gangs. in concord, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. democrats scored some key victories tonight in the first elections of the trump era. phil murphy won the governor's seat in new jersey. he tied his republican opponent to the extremely unpopular incumbent chris christie, who reached his term limit. in virginia ralph northam won easily in a bitter race that was expected to be close. northam's opponent ran hard-edged ads focused on illegal immigration and preserving confederate statues. democrats claimed most of

the top positions in the virginia government tonight including virginia's first openly transgender state legislature. danica rome celebrated the defeat defeat of an outspoken conservative who called himself the chief homophobe. she said her opponent focused too much on social issues. state senator scott wiener called the win historic. >> the fact she defeated a transphobic right-wing legislator who proposed an anti-trans bathroom bill in virginia, it shows that justice sometimes does prevail. >> when asked about her opponent rome said, "i'm not going to attack one of my constituents." president trump warned north korea again about the nuclear weapons arsenal it's assembling. mr. trump promised the u.s. would stand up for its allies when he addressed south korean lawmakers in seoul. north korean leader kim jong un has threatened to attack the u.s., japan, and south korea with nuclear weapons.

>> when i say to the north do not underestimate us and do not try us, we will defend our common security, our shared prosperity, and our sacred liberty. >> president trump recently vowed to "total destroy" north korea. the president heads to china on the next stop of his 12-day asian tour. back here at home we are learning more about the texas church shooter tonight. newly released police records show devin kelley escaped from a new mexico mental health facility in june of 2012. other released records show kelley had been the subject of an investigation for sexual assault and rape in 2013. kelley killed 26 people. the worst mass shooting in texas history. two people have been arrested, accused of helping two inmates escape from the palo alto courthouse yesterday. abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo is live for us from the santa clara county sheriff's office with details on this

story. katie? >> reporter: dion, those two arrests as the sheriff's office continues to investigate how this could have happened. the undersheriff telling us today the courthouse was well staffed. the deputy sheriff's association disagrees. sheriff's investigators say markita kirk rented a u-haul van and staged it near the palo alto courthouse monday morning. it was one of the vehicles used by inmates tramel mckoug and john bivens in their escape. kirk faces charges of conspiracy after the fact. rene hunt faces the same charges but it's not clear the role he played in the escape. >> i can't emphasize how well coordinated and planned this escape was. the timing was perfect. >> reporter: the santa clara county undersheriff said the courthouse had more than the typical 13 deputies working when the men broke away and bolted out of an emergency exit. >> an additional two deputies as well. so we had 15 deputies and one sergeant. so we were actually overstaffed that day.

>> reporter: the vice president of the deputy sheriff's association told abc 7 news the courts are in constant need of more manpower. >> though it may have -- appeared on paper there were sufficient staff, there is not sufficient staff given the security concerns of that facility. we're just thankful no one was hurt or killed in this one. >> reporter: the sheriff's office says more than 20 detectives are assigned to the ongoing manhunt for the inmates, who are considered dangerous. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. a lot more to get to. it looks like trouble for b.a.r.t.'s new fleet of trains. why they may not be ready for their planned thanksgiving debut. and a controversial judge gets a new assignment that reduces his courtroom profile. plus -- >> i'm wayne friedman on an airline flight where pretty much everybody is standing up. there's a reason. it's history.

the public utilities commission, however, says the new cars cannot be used until the problem is solved. santa clara county will have a new superior court night judge next year. aaron persky. he became the subject of national criticism last year when he sentenced former stanford student brock turner to six months in jail for sexual assault. that sentence sparked a recall campaign. persky asked to be reassigned. he'll work on call from home from 5:00 p.m. sunday to 8:00 a.m. friday. well, good-bye 140 characters. twitter is doubling the character limit to 280. after months of testing new limits, the company found most users didn't actually use those extra characters. and this is pretty neat. google is rolling out a new feature to let you know what te wait time is at restaurants. workers have collected data from nearly a million sit-down eateries from around the world to estimate wait times. the feature will be available in google search and maps. >> hmm. well, today united airlines

flew its last flight of its venerable four-engine 747 jet. call it a victim of changing times and certainly more efficient aircraft. >> even so the airline sent it out in tile and abc 7 gnaws reporter wayne friedman had a ticket to ride. so fasten your seat belts. >> ladies and gentlemen, if i could have your attention please. >> reporter: you've been there and done this. you've crammed and waited to board a giant 747. but chances you never had fellow passengers dressed like this. >> you know, maybe embarrassing for the ladies. for guys it's like brotherhood. >> reporter: one week after halloween and we've returned to the 19750s united airlines both celebrated 47 years of 747 service and ushered it out at the same time. >> when is the last time you wore polyester? >> oh, i don't know if i've ever worn polyester. >> good morning. >> welcome aboard. >> normally a packed flight implies misery. today it's a back to the past experience as united sent this 747 to honolulu one more time,

the day one era ends a new beginning. from honolulu wayne friedman, abc 7 news. >> what a fun trip. and what a workhorse that plane has been over these four decades. >> no kidding. i still get a kick over that lei that's over the body. >> that's cute. well, forecast is changing. weather's going to turn on us here. >> definitely not hawaiian weather, sandhya. >> not quite. we' we're going to be seeing some big changes as we head toward tomorrow evening. want to show you live doppler 7 right now and you will notice there is quite a bit of cloud cover. this is going to help to hold the temperatures up tonight. so don't worry. it's not going to drop down near freezing like it did this morning in some of our inland valleys. live doppler 7 showing you the larger picture, the storm that is coming in, and right now it does look pretty healthy. on our storm impact scale we have a level 1 system wednesday afternoon through thursday. we're looking at basically between a tenth to an inch of rain. the winds are going to gust out of the south anywhere from 35 to 45 miles an hour.

with some brief downpours there is concern, possibility for the burn areas to see some debris flow. we'll keep you posted on that. right now a live picture from our mount tamalpais camera. it's a little bit of a breezy shot. breezy's going to turn to windy tomorrow night. look at that beautiful view. i asked rick in transmission to pretty up the shot, and he delivered. thank you for that. as we take a look at our temperatures right now. they're in the 40s and the 50s, running a little higher than where they were yesterday at this time. abc 7 news exploratorium camera showing you a view of san francisco right now. cloudier and not as cold in the morning. wet and windy tomorrow evening. another system arriving this weekend. first thing tomorrow morning yes, it is still going to be cool to chilly but not down to the 30s in most areas. upper 30s to the low 50s is what we'll do. and tomorrow afternoon you're going see those temperatures ranging from the mid 50s up in the north all the way to the upper 60s in the south bay. rain does arrive in the north bay first and spreads by

nighttime. first the wind comes in. tomorrow afternoon southerly wind, 2:00, about 34 miles an hour. getting close to 40 along the coast and also over the hills it will get gusty elsewhere. good idea to secure any loose objects you have on the patio, in the back yard. as you'll notice, tomorrow night it's still going to be pretty windy out there. and the winds will ease going into thursday morning. that's your hour by hour wind forecast. hour by hour rain forecast. wednesday morning tomorrow 8:00 a.m. just clouds. we go into the afternoon. and at 1:30 you'll see some rain in mendocino county. it's light initially. 3:00 you see those scattered light showers elsewhere across the bay area. and then by 5:00 p.m. some oranges and yellows showing up indicating some heavier rain moving through. this is why there's a concern in the burn areas. 7:30 they're getting the downpours there in the north bay. widespread rain around 11:00 p.m. tomorrow night, and then as we head into thursday morning turning to scattered shower activity. the scattered showers go into the morning commute.

and well past that we'll still see a few showers into thursday afternoon. in the second wave of the same system comes through here late thursday night into friday morning. rainfall totals through thursday night. over an inch in the north bay. south bay you'll get about .12 of an inch. not a whole lot. this does turn to snow in the mountains but it's not going to be a repeat of what we saw with the last system. the reason for, it this is a warmer storm. so the snow level, wednesday 8,000 feet dropping down to about 7,500 thursday. you can download the accuweather app and track live doppler 7 anytime you want. accuweather seven-day forecast, level 1 system tomorrow afternoon, evening. going through friday. and then we get a break on veterans day. another system, weaker, sunday afternoon, evening into monday. then it brightens up on tuesday. so dion and dan, get those umbrellas ready. you'll be using them. >> looks like it. thanks, sandhya, very much. well, the north bay wildfires may be under control but we all know the struggle is far from over. with so much lost there is a long road to recovery ahead and

well, the stars were out for a fund-raising gala for the walt disney family museum in san francisco tonight. this year the head of pixar and walt disney animation studios john lassiter was honored with a lifetime achievement award. his movies i think you'll know include "cars," "toy tostory" a "frozen." funds raised will help the museum nurture the next generation of creative talent. disney is the parent company of abc 7 news. >> very cool. one thing we know about larry he's a glass half full guy, always looking for the silver lining. >> oh. i didn't get that impression.

good evening. a trophy certainly won't erase the misery of the 2017 giants, but after an extremely difficult season on and off the field, tonight shortstop brandon crawford won the gold glove award. it's the third straight season that crawford's been honored as the best fielding shortstop in the national league. the individual honor comes after a 98-loss season and sadly the
