we tell the audience don't stand out. it blocks the cameras and you guys aren't listening at all. are you? i appreciate the sentiment. we have so much to get to, starting as we often do with president trump who has been in asia for four days. still no mushroom cloud so that's a positive. trump is in south korea right now. and part of the fun of donald trump being in a foreign country is figuring out what he is going to eat in that country. this is what was on the menu tonight. grilled sole, fish, shrimp stir fry with noodles and korean beef served with a 360-year-old soy sauce. if there is anyone who could appreciate a 360-year-old soy sauce, it is a guy who likes chicken mcnuggets. but he is not there to eat. he is there to neutralize the threat. he said ultimately, it will all work out. it always works out.

day. tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of donald trump winning the election. isn't it crazy to think we're already 80% of the way through this presidency? a lot of people say trump hasn't accomplished anything. that's unfair. because since this time last year, he's played golf more than 70 times and that's a record, folks. and of course, a lot of americans, almost 70% of them, are less than thrilled about this milestone. there are events scheduled across the country tomorrow where people plan to get together to scream into the void for real. there's a facebook page organizing people to scream helplessly at the sky tomorrow. which is kind of funny but also very dumb. and a waste time. maybe instead of screaming helplessly you could do something tomorrow. something positive. for instance, i've spoken a lot about health care on this show and i've been critical of what mr. president trump and half of congress has been trying to do. but i will also say this.

>> i won't. >> jimmy: it's not a juice box. this is interesting. senator rand paul of kentucky was assaulted by his neighbor on friday. and at first everyone assumed it was a political argument. but it wasn't. senator paul was assaulted while he was mowing his lawn. he was mowing the lawn with head phones on and his neighbor, who is a fellow doctor, somebody he actually worked with at one time, tackled him and broke five of his ribs. you don't typically see doctors fighting unless they're on a show. but the argument, i love, was over yard clippings and unraked leaves. really. this is rand paul on his lawn mower. this is the lawn mower he got his ass kicked on. and i was looking at it on the web. what is it with congressmen mowing their own launls. they don't have kids in their neighborhoods? this is chuck grassley, has name is grassley so that makes sense. john boehner pretending to mow

[ applause ] the winter olympics are less than 100 days away. and the russians, already russia has the gold medal for cheating locked up. they do. the international olympic committee believes as much as 1,000 russian olympics were don dopingful not the snoop dogg kind. the olympic committee is considering a number of penalties. apparently they got suspicious when they saw one of them pulling a water skier behind them. this might be controversial. i always knew the russians were doping. no one should be able to fit that many dolls inside of each ooflt it's not natural. this is a strange scientific

[ cheers and applause ] thanks for coming. it's good to have you here. i'm going to say the same thing to you. it always amazes me and irma presses me, you're from england, you can come here and do our action issent so well. >> see the film first. >> jimmy: i did see the film. did you a great job with it. and for me, a southern accent, maybe because i'm from new york. it seems like the hardest one. >> i think new york is harder. >> jimmy: do you think specifically in general or somebody from great britain? >> i think if you do southern, you just talk very slowly. >> jimmy: oh, maybe there's more -- whatever happened, it worked. did you study for that before hand?

>> yeah. like sessions with a dialect coach. and we practice. >> jimmy: would it be terrible if someone has a prank, i don't know if you have people like this in your life. set up and tell you all the wrong stuff. and then did you a crazy terrible job in the movie. >> oh, that would be great. next time. >> jimmy: what did you think when you first come to los angeles? >> i came as a kid. i came as an actor when i was 21. >> jimmy: you would go around to auditions and stuff like that? >> yeah. >> jimmy: was it hard to drive at that time coming from england? >> it was illegal. i didn't have a drivers license. >> jimmy: so how did you get to all of these -- >> i took the bus. many buses, actually. lots of buses. >> jimmy: yeah. the bus doesn't take you to your spot. you have to figure things out. i'm not joking when i say this.

i would be smart enough to figure out, i feel like i would be standing on a corner crying. >> that's what i did. i didn't have friends. i would just spend my evenings figuring out my bus routes. >> jimmy: would you tell anyone you took the bus? >> yes. it was my thing. i was always late. the bus makes you late. so i was always walking in. i'm so sorry. i was on the bus. the bus went here. i got off on the wrong place. that was my intro. >> jimmy: and how did they react? >> they love it. they love the bus. they love british accent. i get more british, that works as well. >> jimmy: do you drive now? >> no. >> jimmy: you do not drive. >> no. >> jimmy: do you have any desire to drive? >> no. i have failed, i have failed. i failed my driving test five times. it's way harder in england. >> jimmy: oh, over there you failed. >> over there i failed.

>> jimmy: have you taken it here? >> yes. it was a piece of cake. >> you got it? >> yes. you literally drive around the block and they give it to you. >> jimmy: that's true. you have to get a separate one? >> i can only drive here for like six months. and then i went back to england and i had to stop driving. >> jimmy: that's weird. wait, five times. hold on. what are you -- what can't do you? can you get the car started? >> i'm an excellent driver. >> jimmy: no, no. i don't think you are. maybe, maybe average. even then, i don't think so. >> it is a pressure thing. i am an excellent driver. and then i get in a test environment and someone has a clipboard and my mind explodes and i cannot do anything and i make mistakes. >> jimmy: it is unbelievable that you would be on a movie set and trying to remember lines and acting with the greatest actors

in the world. sometimes people that you grew up watching and idolizing or whatever. and you get in a car with a guy with a clip board and you can't do it. >> i fall apart. >> jimmy: is it parallel parking that's your problem? >> yeah, no, i can't do test number one. i'm 23. i'm filming never let me and go the director is adamant that i have to drive a car. and it has to be a manual car. no question. well, that's hard. it has to be a manual car and you have five days to learn. i do my five days, intensive thing. and i get to the end and i take test and i failed within 90 seconds of leaving the test zone. going up a hill and i mess up and i stall and i start rolling back down the hill and there's a range rover behind me and he freaks out and does the emergency brake. okay.

then i get onset. and they have an automatic car. i'm like, buddy! so that was a wash. anyway, a couple years later, i'm pregnant with my first child. and i get quite far into the pregnancy. i must learn to drive now because i'm going to be a mother and this is irresponsible. so i'm nine months later and i booked my test. and i failed. and then i booked another one. just like ten days before i get back. and so then i'm, you know, two years later. pregnant with my second child. and i think, i have two children. i should get a driver's license. so i wait until i'm nine months pregnant. and i take one test and i fail. and then it's my fifth test. and so i get, my husband comes to the test center. he's got the champagne ready. and i, and it's the saddest

thing he's ever seen. and i hoist myself out of the car crying with this huge bump. and my little sheet with the red cross on it. and he is slowly -- >> jimmy: maybe the instructor didn't want you drinking champagne when you were pregnant. maybe that's the thing. maybe you passed on that one. >> maybe. >> jimmy: do they tell you right away? do you know or do you get a slip of paper? >> i knew. all of them i knew. the last one where i really thought i nailed it. and i was like, this is it. >> jimmy: well, your driving may not be good but you're getting fantastic reviews for the movie and the movie is unbelievable. tell us about this movie. >> so it's based on a book. after the second world war. and it is two soldiers. the two families on the same piece of land. and two soldiers coming back from the war.

one black, one white. and it is this really bit of history that i didn't know a lot about, about black soldiers putting their lives on the line for their country and coming home to segregation and what that was like for these families. and it was like, a beautiful examination of loving your neighbor and community, what it means to be a community. >> jimmy: and mary j. blige is acting in the movie. did you know her before hand? >> not personally. >> jimmy: you didn't see her at the dmv? nothing like that? >> no, i didn't. it was amazing. she is just, she's been on the show -- >> jimmy: many times. she is a lovely person. she really is a lovely person. okay. so you like each other. that's good. that's good to know. if we didn't learn anything

coco. when you do it in english and spanish, this is going to sound like a dumb question. do you get paid twice for that? or is it all included? if you didn't speak two languages, they would have to hire another person to do that part. so did you negotiate that? or did you even think of that? >> i never thought of that. >> jimmy: you have to talk before you -- i watch your show, mozart in the jungle. you conducted the orchestra at the hollywood bowl. the symphony orchestra. >> the l.a. philharmonic. >> jimmy: and you did that for real? that was not fake? >> for real. >> jimmy: what was that like, could not an orchestra? >> there's no words that can describe how nervous i was.
