of this airliner in seattle. and masterpiece mystery. what's been found embedded in this van gogh painting? and we do say good morning, everyone, on this wednesday. we're going to start with president trump touching down in beijing overnight. >> he's having tea and touring the forbidden city with the chinese president. the most critical meeting of his asia tour. it comes just hours after he delivered a sharply worded message to north korea slamming kim jong-un's human rights record and nuclear ambitions but refraining from any name-calling or inflammatory language. >> and the press secretary sarah sanders says the president was frustrated after he tried to pay a visit to the demilitarized zone but was forced to turn around because of bad weather. abc's karen travers is traveling with the president. >> reporter: good morning. president trump today here in seoul, south korea, said he will not allow the united states to be threatened by north korea and

america will not be intimidated. the president said he came here to the peninsula to deliver a message directly to kim jong-un and it was the most aggressive n this trip. president trump was speaking before the south korean legislature, but talking directly to kim jong-un telling the north korean dictator, do not underestimate and do not try the united states. >> the weapons you are acquiring are not making you safer, they are putting your regime in grave danger. every step you take down this dark path increases the peril you face. north korea is not the paradise your grandfather envisioned. it is a hell that no person deserves. >> reporter: the president says there is a path to a better future for north korea but kim jong-un must do three things, end the aggression of his regime, stop the development of ballistic missiles and a complete, total and verifiable denuclearization.

the president once again calling on china and russia to do more and join the international community in isolating the north korean regime saying, the longer the world waits to come together, the greater the danger grows and the fewer the options become. president trump is now in china, perhaps the most critical stop on this five-country tour. he's facing a complex range of challenges on diplomatic, security and trade issues. president trump has said he and china's president xi have a great relationship. this stop will be a test of whether he can leverage that. karen travers, abc news, seoul, south korea. >> and one of those tests will be north korea, and we should mention the north is reacting with defiance to president trump's speech. one north korean official was quoted as saying, we don't care about what that mad dog may utter. and back here at home, voters have given democrats the first big win since the president took office. >> in the virginia governor's race, democrat ralph northam beat former rnc chair ed gillespie by 9%, and in new jersey phil murphy easily won

the race to replace governor chris christie. >> abc's janai norman has more on what the election results are really showing. good morning, janai. >> reporter: good morning. earlier this year we had seen democrats hadn't been successful in making special elections referendums on president trump but last night that tactic translated to not one but two big wins. a year after donald trump shocked democrats and won the presidency, the opposition party is claiming its own victories. >> big night for democrats and really it was a repudiation of sorts of the trump nationalist message. >> reporter: democratic candidates managed to win in tight gubernatorial races that at times seemed to become referendums on president trump. that was especially true in the swing state of virginia where the race turned nasty. >> instituted the automatic restoration of rights. >> reporter: ugly political ads focused on hot button topics like confederate monuments, race relations and illegal immigration. current lieutenant governor

ralph northam backed by former president obama beat out former republican national committee chairman ed gillespie who garnered the support of president trump. >> with your help, ed gillespie will help make america great again. >> reporter: but in the state seen as a bellwether for national politics, twice as many people cast votes in opposition to the president than in support of him. trump quick to distance himself following gillespie's loss tweeting, ed gillespie worked hard but did not embrace me or what i stand for. >> reporter: and in new jersey backlash over the deeply unpopular governor chris christie became the driving force behind phil murphy's win. the former ambassador beat out the current lieutenant governor and in his victory speech, murphy pledged the days of division are over. diane and kendis. >> all right, janai norman there reporting for us from d.c., thank you. and two other headlines from election night, danica roem of virginia has became the first openly transgender individual elected to a state legislature in u.s. history. in her victory speech she urged

lgbt people to be, quote, who you are. and a 93-year-old world war ii veteran has been elected mayor of tinton falls, new jersey. vito perillo pulled off the upset. he says he wore out two pairs of shoes going door to door to campaign during that race. >> he earned it. back to washington and the new questions this morning for the cia director after revelations that he met with a man who says the hacking of the democratic national committee during the election was an inside job. former code breaker william binney claims the dnc data was leaked with someone with physical access to it, not hacked by the russians as u.s. intelligence agents concluded. cia director mike pompeo reportedly met with binney for over an hour. the agent is not confirming pompeo took that meeting at the urging of president trump. he's being called the ultimate professional and the ultimate teammate. that's thousand fans are remembering roy halladay. he was killed when his small plane crashed into the gulf of mexico.

the two-time cy young winner had taken up flying after retiring from baseball posting video from his plane and images last month that have plane. now despite being just 40 years old, halladay touched many lives. >> he means a lot to all of us and, you know, this is -- we're really, really going to miss him. >> one of the greatest pitchers in baseball. he would walk in a room as if he was just anybody, didn't matter who he met, he was kind, generous. >> and halladay was flying alone when he crashed off the florida coast. the ntsb is investigating the cause. he leaves behind a wife as well as two sons. time now for a look at your weather on this wednesday morning. millions of people from central pennsylvania to northern new england are seeing their first snow of the season along with the coldest air since last spring. and more snow could be in the forecast for some areas by the

we're back with a bit of a scare at seattle's airport. flames could be seen shooting out the engine of this hawaiian airlines plane. the airbus a330 had just landed and no passengers were on board. the plane's fire extinguishing system did its job and no one was injured. new york law enforcement sources say a sexual assault case against harvey weinstein will be presented to a grand jury as early as next week. actress paz de la huerta claims weinstein assaulted her twice in 2010. though sources say her story is credible. a new report claims weinstein silenced his accusers by paying spies to dig up disparaging information on them. weinstein's accusers are now posting a list of more than 100 claims of harassment, abuse and rape against him. meanwhile, police in los angeles confirm they're investigating sexual assault claims made by actor corey feldman. he says a hollywood pedophile ring was responsible for assaulting him when he was a minor and is promising to name those involved in his upcoming movie. a massive drug bust tied to

the opioid crisis in ohio. authorities have announced drug trafficking charges against 100 people. the attorney general says the suspects brought in enough fentanyl and other opioids to kill every person in the county of columbiana in eastern ohio along with every man, woman and child in 11 surround counties. an unusual crime caught on camera. a group of men storming into this doughnut shop in houston, one thief orders an employee to open the register while another thief handed out free doughnuts to customers before taking off. no arrests have been made. >> oh, all right then. >> you'll now have a little more room to express yourself on twitter. the company is expanding its character limit to 280, double the original 140-character limit. now, that's happening for just about all of its users in hopes that people will use their account more often. but there's some big problems for another social media platform. snapchat's stock price, or the parent company anyway, is plunging because of its

many warning signs slipped through the cracks, and they're now warning there could be several more cases like this. abc's danya bacchus is in texas with more on this. scary stuff, danya. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, diane and kendis. we're also learning that sunday wasn't the gunman's first time at this church. devin kelley attended the church's fall festival just days before the massacre. this morning, new details revealing devin kelley was even more unstable and potentially dangerous than initially thought. police records show kelley escaped from a new mexico mental health facility in june of 2012. the police report notes kelley suffered from mental disorders, was caught sneaking firearms onto holloman air force base attempting to carry out death threats he had made on his military chain of command. the air force admitting it should have shared a domestic violence conviction with the fbi that would have blocked him from buying weapons. >> we've taken responsibility and we're going to find out what

happened and fix it. >> reporter: in this small town -- >> why, why? >> reporter: -- vigils remembering the victims continued. >> she had looked at the gunman and he fired at her and it knocked her glasses off her face. >> reporter: sandy ward lost two of her grandchildren, 7-year-old emily and 5-year-old brooke and her daughter-in-law joann. >> when they found the body she was holding brooke in her arms. >> reporter: her grandson ryland was shot five times. her granddaughter rianna managed to survive unharmed. >> she said her mom covered ryland and brooke and emily with her body, you know, was on top which means a lot of the bullets had to go through joann. >> reporter: investigators now trying to learn more about a motive through kelley's cell phone, which the fbi says they haven't been able to unlock because it is encrypted. vice president mike pence and his wife are traveling to sutherland springs today to meet with victims and their families. diane and kendis. >> it sounds like many questions still left to be answered.

danya bacchus in texas, thanks, danya. in the meantime, a school in miami thinks it's found its answers going way beyond metal detectors and security camera to keep students safe. florida christian school is selling bulletproof panels to students that can be inserted into their backpacks. they weigh less than a book and can stop a bullet from powerful handguns. the school will not comment on how many have been sold so far. three ucla basketball players are under arrest in china accused of shoplifting. the team is overseas to play the first game of the season. but liangelo ball, the brother of lakers star lonzo ball, along with two freshmen were taken into custody after an incident at a louis vuitton store. they could face jail time depending on the value of the stolen items. >> there were 20 police officers around. they were yelling, they were screaming, and a lot of these kids were really intimidated because they didn't know what was going to happen. >> the arrests come just as president trump arrives in china and that could actually help the players. analysts say china may not want the publicity of this case right

now. a bit of health news right now and a new warning about the link between alcohol and cancer. researchers say alcohol is now associated with 5 1/2% of all new cancer cases and more than 30,000 deaths every year. the greatest risk comes from heavy drinking. but even light drinking increases the risk of breast cancer by 4% and can boost the risk for head and neck cancers by 13%. light drinking is defined as one drink per day. heavy drinking is four or more drinks in one sitting. here's a good reminder as cold and flu season gets under way. doctors say sneezing can infect people as far as 25 feet away. >> how big are your sneezes? >> well, apparently sneezes scatter 100,000 germs at up to 100 miles per hour, so cover up, people. >> wow, now we know. >> and you're supposed to use your arm, not your hand. >> is that right? >> yeah, because then if you sneeze in your hand you shake everybody's hands so you're supposed to go like that. >> so dab while you sneeze. >> exactly. dab while you sneeze.

newest cars. >> these were supposed roll out around thanksgiving. matt keller is live in milpitas this morning. >> reporter: the new station here, the milpitas b.a.r.t. station, is scheduled to open up in summer of 2018, but as far as these new train cars, b.a.r.t. officials aren't sure when those are going to roll out. according to our media partner "the mercury news" b.a.r.t.'s new train cars failed a safety inspection friday. the goal was to have passengers riding the fleet of the future by thanksgiving. in a letter from the public safety commission b.a.r.t. will not be able to use the new cars until it corrects the problem. so what is the problem? the ten car train failed to recognize all but three of the cars on the train. the train operator was unable to open the door to the platforms. cpuc is asking b.a.r.t. for a written explanation for the cause of the feel you're and how it can be corrected. once that happens b.a.r.t. will have to run another test for state regulators. they still hope to replace the
