the north bay, lanes are closed in san rafel after a big rig crashed and caught fire. at least one person has been killed. you can see how wet it is out there, where the headlights have stopped. the lanes will be closed for at least a know hour. we will stay on top of it. download the abc 7 news app for breaking updates. good evening to you. >> the wet weather may be causing problems across the bay area. you can see of course, the bay bridge is slow right there. let's look at the rain and the impact. >> dan and kristin, right now, we are tracking wide-spread rain. you will notice it's focused in san francisco, the east bay and the south bay. there are some areas of the north bay still getting wet, line rainfall right now. mill valley, panoramic highway and as we go to street level radar. east bay, san ramon, across dublin, boulevard, we are

looking at wiper weather. also the case around concord and pleasant hill. san francisco, covered in rain there. it's not very intense and down the peninsula, we go in to the santa cruz mountains. mountain view, menlo park, gusty winds to 30. and at sfo, hire wi-- higher wis at the hills. this is a level one on the impact scale. rain will turn to showers tomorrow and gusty wi y wipds. we are tracking the issues in the burn areas. okay, thank you very much. >> let's talk more about it right now. in fact, tonight, marks one month since the devastating north bay fires began and as sandy said, the rain is causing a different worry up in the fire zone. >> we are live in santa rosa with more on the conditions there tonight. katie? >> reporter: we have witnessed a consistent and at times strong rain tonight here, but people knew it was coming and many

prepared here in the coffee park neighborhood, you can see tarps are covering the property. >> clean-up crews persisted in the pounding rain in the fountain grove neighborhood. >> i work in construction, it's nice not having dust everywhere. it's a blessing in disguise. >> reporter: rain slows contractors down, but doesn't stop work unless run-off makes conditions unsafe. >> i know had this morning we were selling a lot of tarp. >> reporter: the hardware customers bought rain supplies ahead of the storm. >> people are making more make-shift things for sheltering, whatever they have left. >> reporter: the destruction is overwhelming at times says the insurance adjuster. >> it has been emotionally very challenging, because the devastation is justin credible. >> reporter: he is in town to help from new orleans. >> what is incredible to me is this community. >> the stories are evolving in to more positive stories. we are getting to work. we are starting to get through

it. >> reporter: city and county crews will work in to the night checking storm drains and watching for flooding. abc 7 news. well, it's going to be a long recovery effort of course, cleaning up from the most destructive fire in california history. let's take a look back at how it began one month ago tonight. >> small fires fueled by extreme winds merged in to six massive fires. burning more than 200,000 acres, destroying 8900 structures and killing 43 people. the three biggest fires were in sonoma and napa counties the state incident reports show they start within 15 minutes of each other. from 9:45-10:00 p.m. on sunday, october 8th. by midnight the fires were burning in other areas and the pocket fire broke out on the 3:30, it would take 23 days before all of the fires were

contained. >> new information about a criminal organization targeting wild fire victims. they are claiming fema benefits belonging to thousands of wild fire victims. this woman realized she was a victim of not just the fire but fraud. her animal hospital burned to the ground she was told when filing for aid that somebody used her social security number to claim her benefits. that put her claim and the hospital at risk. >> the uncertainty and unknowing is difficulty. where is the practice going end up being? and where is the fema money going? >> with thousands of fire victims caught in the same scam, some helped fema get on track for aid, and fema said they have locked thousands of fraudulent claims and promise to contact the real victims to file the legitimate claims hopefully

college republicans in the stanford daily and are opposed to robert spencer's message. abc 7 news. a $25,000 reward is now being offered for the capture of two escaped jail inmates. they ran from court in palo alto on monday, and both face sentences in an armed robbery case. they smuggledin a handcuff key to escape. the driver of a run away dump truck that smashed in to at least nine cars faces citations tonight, they include, negligence and failure to take safety precautions, the police said that the truck was overloaded and the emergency brakes malfunctioned. new tests will look for lead in the drinking water in oakland's public school after lead was found in a series of tests in august.

and i met a man whose property escaped both fires. last month and in 1964. michael is thankful he is a light sleeper. he spotted the flames racing toward his home early this mo-- early that morning. >> it's scary, isn't it? should we evacuate? >> he evacuated his spouse who suffers from alzheimer and return eed three days later to e this. block after block of destruction. he drove up sage hill place, his neighbors' homes gone. but his still standing. ? there's times i cannot believe it. i pinch myself and i walk out at night and just walk around in sort of a daze, i'm thinking, i'm alone here. sgr >> reporter: such a close call, flames burned trees feet from his house. >> why did it do this? tell me, i'm not a scientist. >> reporter: and before the fires, he knew the property escaped burning in the 1964

fire, while again, the property next door burned. >> all of a sudden, the fire takes a v shape, it's like there's a protective zone. >> reporter: the experience points to a bigger issue, take a look at the map produced by the city. that is last month's tubbs fire in black and the 1964 hanley fire in red. a similar burn pattern. nuns and at llas fires lastthat had month mirrors the fires in 1964 with the same dry conditions, high winds and topography. >> fire crews used the knowledge to cut the fire brakes that stopped the flames in several locations. but there's a major difference in the fires from last month compared to 50 years ago, the feedback of homes built trg t--t during that time, the 1964 fires claimed 164 structures and last
