overflowing with compliments. karen travers has the latest from beijing. good morning, karen. >> reporter: good morning, diane and kendis. president trump says he has a great relationship with president xi. he says they have great chemistry. and he is talking about it at every single event here in beijing. as you say, there was a remarkable change of tone from president trump on the issue of trade. the president no longer blaming china for the massive trade deficit but blaming his predecessors. the two presidents started off their day with.an elaborate welcome ceremony at beijing's great hall of the people. then they got down to business. president xi was a favorite boogeyman for the president during his campaign. he said china was raping the united states and getting away with murder. but sitting next to president xi here in beijing, a major change in tone. >> i don't blame china. after all, who can blame a country for being able to take advantage of another country for

>> we now know it was a crime that the assailant was ever able to purchase a firearm in the first place. >> reporter: the shooter, an air force veteran, was convicted in the military court of domestic abuse, a charge that should have prevented him from buying his guns. but the air force has admitted it he made a mistake ask never passed the information along to the fbi. >> there are enormous problems with the background check system. >> reporter: there are concerns other cases may be slipping through the cracks. >> the air force is moving aggressively to review why this error occurred and that review will be completed in days, not weeks. >> reporter: and for the first time we're hearing from investigators who watched a video of the shooting break out, they described a grisly and graphic scene wherefore seven minutes the gunman methodically walked into every single pew, executing his victims. officials say what shocked them most was that anyone inside this tiny church was able to survive. diane and kendis.

>> that was the incredible part, maggie, thank you. the lawmaker responsible for the original assault weapons ban is pushing another one. dianne feinstein has introduced a measure to outlaw the sale and possession of military-style assault weapons. feinstein says she wants americans to know a bill to reduce tragedies like the one in texas is ready for debate. and a bizarre twist in an alleged case of racism involving air force cadets. in september, an investigation was opened into racial slurs written on the dorm room message boards of five black cadets. now one of those cadets has admitted being responsible for writing the messages. that cadet is no longer at the school. and we're tracking a nasty blast of frigid weather this morning carrying heavy snow and cold temperatures. >> a cold front is hitting the upper midwest right now and will move into the northeast. accuweather meteorologist justin povick joins us with the details. >> kendis and diane, thanks and good morning to you.

a new study finds breast cancer can return 20 years after the initial diagnosis. researchers found the risk of return is high, especially among women with the most common type of breast cancer. but they say continuing to take suppression medications significantly reduces that risk. senator rand paul has tweeted an update about the injuries he suffered when his neighbor tackled him from behind. he says he appreciates all the support from everyone, a medical update, final report indicates six broken ribs and new x-ray shows a pleural effusion. by the way, a pleural effusion is excess fluid around the lungs. paul's neighbor is set to be arraigned later today on assault charges. apparently, this was all over trash and leaves. >> leaves and shrubbery. >> political things, fall fight. very bizarre, two republicans were on a roll in a rough race in congress. >> take a look. that's texas representative sam
