sit stjude.org. good morning everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, november 12th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hey, carolyn. hi everyone. lots of cloud cover out there. could even be patchy dense fog. live doppler 7 as we widen the perspective shows there's green to the north. a little piece of energy will continue to sink to the south and bring us rain late tonight towards your monday morning commute. it is still the weekend, though. upper 40s to low 50s. we're talking about cool weather this morning with 3/4 mile visibility in napa. so elsewhere we're in the 50s from mun tan view to fremont to san jose. we're looking at the rain beginning in the north bay later

on tonight and really late by 10:00. temperatures will be cool but that's not our only chance of rain. check it out. we've got a braef break on tuesday. by wednesday or thursday, a breezy, rainy system. next weekend could be wet as well. >> carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. santa rosa officials will host a news conference today on the potential impact of the rain lisa just told you about. this is especially pertinent for the fountain grove area which was nearly burned to the ground last month. the city identified sections of storm drain destroyed by the fires and that, plus the fact that there's little to no groundcover means increased risk for landslides and sinkholes. residents will be asked to call 911 if they see evidence of flooding or mud flows. from bikes to personal documen documents, north bay residents are recovering part of their lives lost last month to the wildfires. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story from santa

and it was open. it flew open. >> music filled old courthouse square. a festival called sonoma strong marked the beginning of rebuilding efforts. it could take years, but patty and michael say look around. the community is pitching in. >> tragedy brings out the best in people and santa rosa came together. which is amazing. >> we're a fallen community. now united. in santa rosa, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. new this morning, we're getting our first look inside an entertainment center where a stairwell collapsed in san diego injuring 21 children and two adults. it happened during pizza time at the center where kids learn tumbling, trampoline skills and rope climbing, among other things. some children were on a wooden platform when the structure gave way. 20 people were taken to the hospital. one child possibly suffered a moderate spinal cord injury due to the way he fell.

today marks one week since the mass shooting at a texas church that killed more than two dozen people. the small town of sutherland springs is still trying to recover. the church will open today not for service but to let people visit a memorial there. the church will be demolished because it's too pain shul to continue using it as a place of worship. linda lopez has the story. >> they're setting up tents for church service near where they used to gather on sunday mornings. the survivors of the tragedy inside the first baptist church of sutherland springs will pray together again one week after devin kelley killed 26 people and wounding 20 others. the gunman's first wife opening up about what she says was a marriage filled with abuse and threats. a promotional clip for inside edition. >> he had a lot of demons or hatred inside of him. >> the victims now being laid to

rest. >> saturday richard and they reese rodriguez were buried, husband and wife in this small town cemetery. neighbors and visitors trickle into the tiny texas town to pay respects. handmade cross, a visual reminder of so many lives lost. a few miles away, neighbors spent two days cooking over 5,000 pounds of food to raise money to assist the victims. >> i mean, like i said, the money is never going to replace the victims but it will them in i guess the recovery process. >> volunteers of the first baptist food pantry showed up this weekend like they always do, to help the needy. >> the woman who organized the effort for years was lost in the attack. >> she's no longer with us except in spirit. >> for lou, they served up bread and love and even a little laughter. >> church leaders said volunteers allowed them to transform the site of the shooting into a beautiful memorial. that celebrates and pays tribute to the lives that were lost.

the public will be able to visit the memorial after sunday. linda lopez, abc news, new york. developing news in oakland where police officers are on high alert this morning for any attempts to start a sideshow. the police department tweeted pictures of several cars they towed last night for suspected sideshow activity. police were tipped off on sideshow activity. they impounded motorcycles after nearly 200 bikers performed sideshows on east bay roads and freeways. happening today, san francisco's annual veterans day parade. this is the 97th year the city by the bay honored veterans that way. this is video from a recent parade. today's will start at north point and the embarked der owe. it will wind down to a

park. to traffic will be allowed between jefferson street and the embarcadero. it starts at 11:00 and is scheduled to end at 1:00. before leading the war used to win on veterans day, steph curry used his star power calling on america to keep its promise to the men and women who served our country. abc 7 news reporter lonni rivera has that story from oracle arena. >> would you like to support our troops? thank you. thank you for your donation. >> patriotism on display outside oracle arena. >> and inside as the warriors battled the 76ers on veterans day. before the game warriors guard steph curry was in the spotlight for an article he wrote in the players tribune discussing serious issues veterans in america face every day. curry wrote, let's respect our veterans by having a conversation about the ways that we as civilians as their fellow americans they fought to protect

can hold up our end of the bargain. >> he talked about holding up our part of the bargain as civilians. moving forward from veterans, how do we do that? >> there are countless ways that we all can contribute and take action. >> curry says there's no set formula. he actively supports thanks usa which raises money for scholarships to help families of active military personnel. >> i was really proud of steph for his words, beautifully written article and captured everything perfectly. i think we get caught in this sort of wave of what patriotism is. >> on this veterans day, the warriors teamed up with operation care and comfort to raise money for care packages for servicemen and service women. army veteran frank keper says the fundraisers make a difference. >> it means everything. it's like christmas getting a letter or package from home. >> it helps me understand how i can get involved. >> the warriors won this game on

the court and off the court the team is committed to helping the warriors who have sacrificed so much to keep our country safe. in oakland, lonni rivera, abc 7 news. three ucla basketball players arrested on shoplifting charges remain in china this morning. they were not with the team on its flight back to l.a. according to our sister network espn. the three players all freshmen were questioned about allegedly stealing sunglasses from a louis vuitton store near the team's hotel. one store says they could remain in china for a week or two. ball, whose son is one of the accused players says it's not that big a deal. happening today, a heads-up to b.a.r.t. riders. crews are doing maintenance inside the b.a.r.t. tunnel resulting in train delays up to 40 minutes. trains will be single tracked through the tunnel. agency officials say this is work that cannot be done outside service hours. some regularly scheduled trains

it can be bought ov over-the-count over-the-counter. the gas tax was raised to help fix our decaying roads but they recognize there's a shortage of construction workers. efforts are under way in san jose to address that. abc 7 news reporter david louis looks at how the pool of trades people will be expanded. >> reporter: early next year, crews are going to be start to go fix these potholes and cracks thanks to the gas tax increase. >> we're going to be able to perform major repairs and minor upkeep and maintenance on about 70 miles of roads across our city every year with this funding. >> reporter: however, who is going to do the work? the construction boom created a shortage of trades people, estimated to be 5,000 to 10,000. a drive is under way to expand pre-apprentice programs with $25 million in the gas tax revenue. san jose resident rhonda harper joined such a program two years ago. today she's a carpenter apprentice working on a seismic

retrofit at stanford hospital. >> it's so rewarding. when i get off work, i literally am in the car dancing. i got my music on and headphones on. i dance before i go to work, too. >> it can be a lifelong career. once you get into construction, that's your life. i had an amazing life in construction. these are careers, not jobs. >> reporter: with this funding. the city of san jose is prepared to start on ten miefls road repairs. one of the conditions is they double the number of companies owned by minorities, women and the disabled. at networking events is bringing together so-called disadvantaged companies to expand the pool. vta is the lead agency building the b.a.r.t. extension and the county is working on housing projects funded by a voter approved bond measure. >> the more you can network, the more people that you know, the more areas you can plug in, the better and more opportunities you have to find other talented

individuals to help team for the next opportunity. >> in san jose, david lieu, abc 7 news. happening today, it's your last chance to check out the harvest festival in san mateo. one of the largest arts and crafts festivals on the west coast at the san mateo county events center. it's open from 10:00 this morning until 5:00 tonight. there will be more than 25,000 things including -- general admission costs $9, kids 12 and under get in for free. one california neighborhood sees bears often. but for one neighborhood, the bears got too close for comfort. reporter chelsea edwards from our sister station in los angeles is monrovia with the story. >> you guys got to get out. >> living in the foothills, the mark family is used to bear sightings. never seen anything quite like this. >> he heard some commotion out in this room.

and woke up and saw the two cubs in the room and as soon as he showed up, one of the cubs left. >> jenny marks' husband captured this cell phone video on thursday as he tried to shoo out a cub. >> how those cubs managed to squeeze in and out, we'll never know. >> hey, come on, out. >> after it snakd, the cub joined mama bear and a sibling out and went on its way. >> i'm glad he was able to get them out. obviously, he's only functioning with one arm right now. >> her husband is a survivor of the las vegas massacre and is still recovering. >> my husband was shot. it's been a pretty trying month. and he's just recuperating right now. this was a bit of excitement that was probably not needed right now, but it all worked out for the best. >> this is the third time the bear family has visited the

marks in the last few weeks. they had a pool party in the backyard and on another occasion came close to coming inside. >> oh, my goodness. oh, my goodness. >> then she jumped up on the glass and probably a good 6 1/2 feet tall. >> the furry family was later seen scampering across the street and on to a neighbor's lawn. many celebrate their local bears though this was a little too close for comfort, the marks are still happy to have them. >> we're animal lovers, it's exciting, it's always fun to see. good morning to you. we have a lot of cloud cover. some of this inhibiting the dense fog development but there could be patches out here. live doppler 7. we widen the perspective. it looks more active to the north. it is. because there's a system here that will drop down and bring us

showers and cloud us up a bit. here's a look from emeryville where temperatures are cooler this morning, anywhere from 4 to 5 degrees cooler from livermore through knnovato. 49 in oakland. 50 mountain view. gilroy and half moon bay. another vantage point, we have more 40s and a couple of 50s out there. 48 santa rosa. 46 in novato with 51 in concord. we're not going to see a whole lot of sunshine today. more sunshine in the east bay and the south bay. we'll call it partly cloudy. few areas of fog this morning and then by the later afternoon hours, we'll see more clouds in the north bay. by about 10:00 tonight, that's when we could see some rain in the extreme north bay around sonoma and pushing southward through marin. that will take us through monday morning commute and at this point, it looks like it will impact both commutes. your morning and your evening commute. it's a 1 on our storm impact scale. late tonight into tomorrow.

looking at light showers, weak winds in the north bay, about a forter of an -- .25 inches of rain. many -- maybe a few one hundredths. nothing along the monterrey coast. your hour-by-hour forecast shows by noontime, in the north bay. by the evening hours, spotty showers possible here in the north bay. but it's going to take until the morning hours when we see more organized rain. this is 6:30 tomorrow morning looking at showers from cloverdale to santa rosa. it's not only raining in the morning hour but it continues to push to the south and gather more energy by 1:00. so the lunch-hour looks wet. still in the north bay through san francisco and that's why the amounts will total highest here. but throughout the afternoon, by the evening commute, 5 kplon :3e got scattered showers. the showers will linger into the

new york. the north bay wildfire victims looking to apply for the federal debris removal program. fema and the u.s. army corps of engineers will be at the santa rosa veterans building to answer questions. you can stop by any time between 11:00 this morning and 3:00 this afternoon. abc 7 news was in santa rosa yesterday where there was another resource fair. tomorrow is the application deadline for wildfire victims in sonoma county. homeowners must fill out a right to entry form to allow the cleanup. >> removing all the ash, we're removing whatever concrete needs to be removed. we're removing the foundations from each home because we have to get down and test that soil underneath the foundation to make sure that there's no co contaminants left. >> they have to have 70 teams out in the county within the next week. removal takes about three days and officials hope to have all of the fire zone cleaned up by early next year.

welcome back everyone. 5:39 on this sunday morning. thank you for joining us for abc 7 mornings. this is a live look from the golden gate bridge. not a whole lot of activity going on today. there's at least -- at least at this hour. the week ahead weatherwise, off and on with the rain. lisa will be along shortly with the full accuweather forecast. the american flag flew high over downtown san jose on veterans day honoring those who have served our country. the annual veterans day parade rolled down santa clara street yesterday morning. the united veterans council of santa clara county hosts the event every year. drone view 7 flew over the crosses of lafayette. volunteers put up thousands of crosses on the hillside. across from the lafayette b.a.r.t. station to remember service members lost to all wars. this tradition began back in

2006 to mark the number of dead in the iraq war. some call it anti-war. a vigil is held every veterans day to honor the fallen. vice president pence paid tribute to veterans in washington. he laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier. pence watched the names etched into the vietnam memorial alongside volunteers. people visiting ocean beach today might catch a glimpse of what's left of some beautiful sandcastle creations. the classic in san francisco drew hundreds of people yesterday. and here is a look at the sandy's bucket brigade that came in first place this year. very elaborate. the theme was castles, castles, castles celebrating the event's 35th year. about 500 bay area students competed for the best trophy. they spent months developing the sandcastles, then brought their designs to life yesterday. >> as professionals have gone

cooler in livermore. forecast highlights calling for some fog out there. cool conditions. the clouds will thin out. we'll see sunshine today in the east bay and the city and the south bay. even in the north bay for the first half of the day. then the clouds increase and that brings the rain late tonight through monday. so it is going to be a soggy, sloppy slow monday with your storm impact scale a 1. looking at this right now, it looks like quarter of an inch to 3/4 of an inch of rain in the north bay. lesser amounts to the south. we'll time it out for you today. you'll notice that with the cloud cover thinning out, you've got sunny afternoon throughout the east bay. 8:00 tonight, you could see a few light showers along the mendocino coast. it's really towards dawn when the rain gets going with temperatures on the mild side with the cloud cover. with the rain coming down from sonoma, through marin county early. by 1:00 it's hung up in the north bay. but sinking to the south. it's going to stay that way
