it develops. after a year of the ghost ship fire in oakland the city released a memo updating the public on the changes its made to ensure this tragedy won't happen again. 30 people died in the warehouse last december. oakland's task force has focused on housing, foort ability and safety. it has doubled the number of inspectors and its improved communication wean the fire department and building inspectors. working with property owners to fix code violations. the fire department has a backlog of a thousand state mandated inspections. there are still 21 open cases involving buildings with known violations. a hit-and-run driver left a woman dead in the san francisco street over the weekend. police are hoping you can help catch him. kaebs 7 news reporter

man was wrongfully convicted. a former reality t.v. contestant is suing john evans, whose testimony was considered instrumental in the steinle trial. nbc reporter lyanne melendez with more on this. >> reporter: john evans was brought in on october 30th as someone with firearm's training. in court evans testified that the defendant intended to shoot kate steinle and this was no accidental shooting. looking of minots from the trial evans testified that garcia serrate pointed the gun in her direction, pulled the trigger and killed kate steinle. the prosecution asked him why. he responded, it's the only reasonable explanations. today evans was meant to be a rebuttal witnesses for the prosecution but his name was scratched off.

in two occasions evans testified at the trial of ja maul rasheed true love. here's the time line, true love was accused of murder in which he was convicted in 2010, then that conviction was overturned in 2014. in 2015 true love was acquitted in a second trial. evans is now being sued by true love for his friendsic statement it was inconsistent with what other experts found. james morris, an expert was one of them. >> there are appropriate people in san francisco who can testify about these thing. >> reporter: shell casings found on the ground show the gunman was running up hill on blithe dale avenue. contradicting the testimony of a witness. evans also lied under oath about reading an important study done by the san francisco police department. because true love is alleging his civil rights were violated the case will be heard in
