good morning, i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis againston. here are some of the top stories we're following on this friday. the republicans' massive tax reform bill heads to the senate after being passed in the house. a tough battle is expected in the next round as one republican has already come out against the senate version. a massive fire spreads through a senior living community in philadelphia overnight. at least 20 people are injured and dozens others are left with nowhere to stay. the university of south carolina women's basketball team will not be attending today's white house event honoring college sports champions. the team's coach says she didn't get their invitation until late yesterday. dawn stalely complained in

september about not being invited to an event with the president. and the museum of the bible opens today in washington, d.c. the private $800 million museum features artifacts collected by the family that controls the hobby lobby retail chain. it's located near the national mall. those are some of our top stories on this friday, november 17. from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this morning this half hour with a win for republicans. the house has passed its version of the massive tax reform measure. >> gop lawmakers cheered once the vote with a announced, but now it's on to the senate where things are expected to get more difficult. some republicans in that chamber have expressed reservations about the plan. president trump is putting on the pressure to win them over. here's abc's cecelia vega. >> reporter: president trump brought his art of the deal to capitol hill making a pitch for a win he so desperately needs. at the end of his closed-door meeting with house republicans he told them, i love you, now go

vote. and they did, giving him that small victory on a bill that would add $1.4 trillion to the deficit over ten years while decreasing the number of tax brackets and deductions. but in the senate, his tax reform plan still hangs in the balance. while it could save more than $300 billion over the next decade, it could also leave 13 million more people uninsured by repealing an obamacare mandate requiring all americans to have insurance. the first republican senator to say he's a no, wisconsin's ron johnson. president trump called trying to ease his concerns. johnson said he's still a no. >> i'm just looking for a fair shake for all businesses. let's not upset that applecart and harm our economy. >> reporter: and now a new report by congress's nonpartisan tax committee raises serious questions about white house claims its tax plan benefits the middle class. it says over the next decade, americans who earn six figures will pay lower taxes but those

earning $75,000 or less will see a tax hike. opponents like oregon senator ron widen call it unfair. >> i don't know how anybody can go home now to the folks they represent and explain why it's a good idea to hike taxes. what is happening now is shameful. >> reporter: president trump is feeling confident. sources tell us on capitol hill, he told republicans he expects this senate bill to pass and that he'll be able to convert any republican nos, including ron johnson. he is already talking about what comes next, welfare reform, but this is far from a done deal. he cannot afford to lose any more votes. cecelia vega, the white house. and alabama senate candidate roy moore is showing no signs of giving up his fight against sexual misconduct accusations. moore still has the backing of his republican party, but a new poll shows his spaurt is

slipping and he's now trailing democrat doug jones by eight points. moore says the allegations by the women are an attack. and he claims the senate's republican leader is behind the effort. >> many of you have recognized that this is an effort by mitch mcconnell and his cronies to steal this election. i got a call asking me to step down from the campaign. i'm going to tell you who needs to step down. that's mitch mcconnell. >> white house press secretary sarah sanders says the president believes the allegation against moore are very troubling. the president himself has not said a word publicly about the situation. minnesota senator al franken is apologizing and saying he is, quote, disgusted with himself. this after radio host leeann tweeden accused him of forcibly kissing her back in 2006. tweeden is sharing a photo from that tour in which she calls humiliating. abc's marci gonzalez with the

that doesn't mean that this is okay. >> ellison joins most party leaders and voters in minnesota who are not calling for franken to step down. new jersey senator bob menendez will likely face an ethics investigation after his corruption trial ended with a deadlocked jury. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell reportedly called for the ethics probe shortly after the mistrial was announced. manendez was accused of accepting bribes and favors from a florida doctor in exchange for favors. he says they were part of a long friendship. and the leader of a drug company pleaded not guilty of having doctors prescribe a drug to patients who did not need it. he requested that a gps monitoring bracelet be removed. prosecutors say kapur is a flight risk, given his wealth. a nasty storm is threatening to disrupt travel pore millions

philadelphia overnight where a massive fire has engulfed a senior living community. >> that fire erupted around midnight and quickly lit up the night sky. the images coming in are just incredible. and that fire spread very quickly throughout the building. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused this fire. but so far, they report at least 20 injuries. victims have been reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation and minor leg injuries. those people have been rushed to local hospitals. >> and dozens of others are left with nowhere to stay. many residents have been wrapped in blankets and brought to safety in the wheelchairs that you see there. overnight temperatures in philadelphia were in the 30s and these folks were brought out into the cold. many of them taken to hospital just for shelter. this is all taking place, if you're familiar with the philadelphia area, in the main line area of the suburbs of philadelphia. we're going to continue to keep an eye on this breaking news. presidential adviser and son-in-law jared kushner now has ten days to turn over e-mails

several workers have been fired from a psychiatric hospital in hawaii after an admitted killer managed to escape. >> not only did randall saito escape the facility, he managed to leave the state by boarding a flight to california. now he's speaking out from behind bars. matt keller of our san francisco station has more. >> reporter: inside the san joaquin county jail, a piece of safety glass separated me from a man the prosecutor in hawaii says fills all the criteria of a classic serial killer, 59-year-old randall saito. the bay area quickly became familiar of saito after details

of his escape became public on the tuesday. he was committed to a psychiatric hospital in a oahu in 1981 after being acquitted by reason of insanity for the murder of a woman he had shot and stabbed multiple times. in 1993, a court denied saito's request for conditional release saying he continued to suffer from sexual sadism and necrophilia, something he says he made up before his trial in an attempt to avoid prison. >> since i have been in the hospital, i have told them that i actually pan indicated that story. to get to the state hospital. >> reporter: saito says he had about $6,000 in fake drivers licenses when he escaped sunday morning. how did you get the ids? >> i can't tell you that, i'm sorry. >> reporter: through the hospital or hospital staff or someone outside? >> i can't tell you that. >> reporter: once outside the hospital, saito took a cab to

the airport in honolulu and chartered a plane to maui. he made it through tsa with a fake id and chose san jose because it was the cheapest ticket into california. saito landed sunday night and took a cab to a hotel. >> i can't believe i actually made it. it was surreal. >> reporter: after spending three nights in stockton with at least one trip to walmart the to buy a phone, he decided it was time to move on. a cabdriver agreed to drive him to reno on wednesday, but when they stopped for gas on the way out, police swooped in and arrested saito. >> police officers converged on me and i said, hey, i'm not going to fight. that's not who i am. >> reporter: the final question, why did he escape? after 37 years in the psychiatric hospital, saito says he had an exemplary record with no violence or drugs. he said this escape was his chance to prove he was not a danger to anyone and deserved a conditional release. >> i wanted more time, but it would seem i would have had all this time to do something bad.
