west valley up to cupertino for an eight-minute drive. you can get an idea where that stretch is. some slowing for a 30-minute drive up and over the altamont pass. a look at your north bay drive. >> back to the news that shocked jessica and so many of us, today expected to be the busiest day after our airports. >> this has been the case at sfo for several years. amy hollyfield is live for us. hi, amy. >> reporter: hi, reggie. it's living up to expectations. it is crowded here. look at all of these people. travelers, some say this surprised them. they were a bit surprised to see this. look at the check-in counter packed with people. this is the busiest travel day of the year and they say it's been that way for a few years now.

the wednesday before thanksgiving has lost its title. travelers advise you to get here early. >> i honestly didn't think it would be this busy. we got here, it's full. i would think people would start traveling next week on monday. it's crazy. >> already on vacation for the holiday. we decided to just travel. >> he's off for school? >> he's off for a week, yeah. >> reporter: and that's the reason sfo says now that the kids are out of school all week people are getting out of town today rather than the week of thanksgiving. they expect next sunday to be busy. the friday after thanksgiving they say is a super slow day and a cheap one. that's a good day to travel if you can plan that way.

today they expect about 15,000 more people here at the airport than on a typical friday. live at sfo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> i am still stumped by this news. thank you so much, amy. we are live at san jose international airport as well. they expect the busiest day for them the monday after thanksgiving. new this hour we have just learned seven hospital workers in hawaii have been relieved of their duties without pay after an extremely dangerous psychiatric patient escaped and flew here to the bay area. randall saito escaped the hawaii state hospital sunday, was just captured wednesday morning. and those hospital employees are now suspended for at least the next 30 days. an internal investigation is under way. the hawaii state department runs the hospital and has said they are evaluating and correcting their hospital protocols and procedures after this incident.

matt keller was the first reporter to talk to saito in a jailhouse interview. a live report coming up in our next half hour. an update on the wildfires, the sheriff has identified three more victims including a person who was 101 years old. the death toll remains the same at 23. the sheriff warned deputies are getting reports of scam artists targeting fire victims. you can go to abc7.com to find tips to avoid being a victim of fraud. al franken is responding after being accused of forcibly kissing a woman during a uso tour. >> reporter: in this morning's "gma first look" the photo sending al franken's senate career into a tailspin. franken pretending to grope radio host leeann tweeden while she was sleeping. the two were on their way home

from this uso tour. now tweeden claeims the then comedian was inappropriate forcing her into a scene. >> he mashed his lips to my face and stuck his tongue in my mouth so fast. >> reporter: franken is apologizing saying in a statement i don't know what was in my head when i took that picture and it doesn't matter. there's no ebbs cues. excuse. it's obvious how leeann would feel violated by that picture. robin roberts speaks live with franken's accuser a milpitas chiropractor has been arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a patient. a 44-year-old woman reported that dr. gregory allen lind touched her inappropriately during an adjustment. it happened at the family cairo practice and natural healing center. she called police a day later.

one of the victims of this week's shooting says multiple people wouldn't help her even though she had just been shot five times. tiffany was driving her three children to school at the time. >> i decided to just keep on driving to the hospital. my body was going numb. i couldn't hear anything. when i heard my kids cry i woke myself up. >> this story is just so upsetting. those cries kept her conscious enough to keep driving. she stopped three people for help. they all declined. in fact, she says one woman even told her she wasn't going to help because she didn't want to be late for work. the fourth person she stopped was a sheriff's deputy, thank goodness. he, of course, did help her. her 10-year-old was shot twice in the calf. her 7-year-old was shot once in the foot. her 2-year-old had scratches frm shattered glass. it turns out the gunman is also

her neighbor. >> i cannot believe that story. >> we wish that family all the healing that we can. >> we have new details on the mass shooting at a texas church. rangers investigating the rampage in sutherland springs served a search warrant on apple according to court records. they show rangers are seeking files stored on the gunman's iphone. a second mobile phone found near his body and for files stored in his i cloud account. authorities say devin kelley killed himself after killing 26 people during sunday's service on november 5th. santa clara county recorded its first flu-related death. health officials are not releases the name, age, just that they were an adult under 65 and passed away earlier in the month. the person had not received the flu shot this year and had other medical conditions that put them at an increased risk of severe complications from the flu. if you're hoping to ride on the new b.a.r.t. cars, prepare to be disappointed. it could be weeks before they're

the 12-hour planner starting off at 60. sunny and 59. low 60s this afternoon. 55 at 6:00. down in san jose and the rest of the south bay a few clouds, sunny and 60 at noon. back down to 56 degrees. i want to show you the temperatures and the sky condition for today, tomorrow, and sunday. through the entire weekend. you can see temperatures in the upper 50s to mid-60s. but notice it's also dry. come monday that all changes. we have several chances of rain coming up next week and i'll have details in the accuweather seven-day forecast. one area that received about an inch and three-quarters rain, the golden gate bridge. the roads are slick but it's not coming down right now. you can see the sheen on the roadway here southbound 101 coming out of the robin williams tunnel moving nicely. yesterday, though, what a nightmare. we had a terrible commute out of

one is not a choice. choose your mattress with tulo. everything you want in a bed, in a box. we're back at 5:14. who could forget these incidents involving passengers being forcibly removed from flights. fewer passengers were actually bumped than ever before. the u.s. department of transportation says airlines removed 2,745 passengers between july and september, so that's one in every 67,000 passengers making it the lowest rate since the department started keeping track in 1995. a lot of the big, high-profile incidents happened early in the year and airlines made changes. state regulators are moving

forward to reduce the liability for self-driving cars. now critics are saying that this puts an unfair burden on car owners adding carmakers would open a loophole and try to distance themselves from injuries or deaths caused by defective technology. consumer groups say they prepared to sue if the regulations are adopted. excuse me, do you have a reservation? if you're planning a trip to muirwoods you'll need one. they will require anyone bringing a vehicle to book a spot first. if you have a car are no reservation you'll be turned away at the gate. the goal is to reduce traffic jams and overcrowding that's been associated with muir woods for years. reservations are $8 per car. muir woods will be the first in the national park system to require year round vehicle registrations. you should really take the bus

provided. >> i never do. i take the car and it's a nightmare to find parking. >> you're that person. >> it is 5:16 now. the oakland alameda coliseum authority is expected to an audit. the team owed as much as $800,000 in parking fees. the raiders only made minimum payments since 2013 and owed $25,000 more per game in the last four years. no word yet on the settlement -- on what the settlement entails. some people just really love this pig. a campaign is under way to save a neon sign in san jose, but not just any sign. it has that dancing pig that historians say is one of the best examples of neon art. david louie has the story you'll only see on abc 7. >> reporter: all eyes are on richard jackson trying to assess what it will take to bring this neglected sign back to life.

it once marked where the stevens meat product sausage factory stood. a decade ago this is the same sign with a signature dancing pig. it was a neon eye catch they're kindles nostalgia and more. >> some would say it's public art. it was hand crafted. most likely over in oakland at the headquarters of electrical products corporation which was at the time the largest manufacturer of electric sign displays. >> reporter: heather david has been cataloging dozens of neon signs in san jose. some are well maintained such as this one that appears to have been inspired by the jetsons that used to promote a bowling alley. >> almost every business had to have a notable sign because roadside advertising was a key component to advertising. >> reporter: many date back to the '60s and '70s, some modified after one business closed and another took over. the giant sign over western

appliance cost the store $5,000 a year in power and maintenance. the dancing pig sign has been determined to be in poor condition. it'll need all new neon tubes and repairs to bullet holes. so the preservation action council of san jose is kicking off an online fund-raising campaign to restore it. >> it's a beautiful sign. each one are an icon to the area that they're in. i think this is definitely one worth saving. >> reporter: as businesses close a few neon signs saved and stored in hopes of creating a museum in san jose. >> there are cities across the nation sort of a renewed push to try to preserve neon signs and it's about time we get on the bandwagon. >> reporter: in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. >> bullet holes? repairs to the dancing pig sign are expected to run in the tens of thousands of dollars. if you'd lick to make a donation, we do have a link to the save the dancing pig

fund-raising campaign. and stop shooting up the pig. >> what? >> what's happening? >> everything's bad. mike nicco, bring us some good stuff today, please. let's talk about a brighter future. that's what we have. hi, everybody. here's a look at the san mateo bridge. it's still pretty damp as we look towards the west. over in hayward about an inch and three-quarters of rain. becoming sunny with bone-dry air outside. that means clear and much cooler tonight and several chances of rain next week. does that give you pause? it probably should. i'll show you more in the seven-day forecast. first, we had some rain roll over 92, and it's heading down 280 to the southeast. so some sprinkles possible there. the same thing on the dumbarton bridge. now it's heading on to 84 and trying to move into the sunol grade. you can see how it will slide down to the southeast and fall apart over the next hour to hour and a half. look at this. by the time we get to lunch, most of them are gone and get

ready for a bright afternoon. what does that do to our temperatures? we did bring a cooler air mass in. so only about 61 to 64 with 59 to 60 along the coast. tonight's temperatures, the heater will be running inland, mid to upper 30s there with low to upper 40s around the bay. let's get to that accuweather seven-day forecast. i want to show you the changes coming starting monday. light showers. these are a one on the storm impact scale. the next wave of rain is tuesday, light. we could have rain on and off all day wednesday and then thursday morning is wet. the rainfall totals may only get up to about half an inch. it's not snow but i hear at 8:00 this evening someone may put us into the holiday spirit. what's going on? >> some christmas music on the radio and it's always fun at 96.5 koit that starts at noon. we'll go to san jose. a couple of problems, 101 headlights heading in the northbound direction over 880 but a little bit further south

they're moving fine there. a couple of lanes are blocked before observing road and you can see it stacking up to the 280/680 interchange northbound on 101 so avoid that if you can. you might want to take 280 until they get the accidents cleared out. highway 87 an accident blocking two lanes of traffic there as well in the northbound direction. so early morning problems for san jose. we'll come back with an update in a couple of minutes. >> thank you, sue. there was a big celebration to mark 30 years of improving young lives. abc 7 was at the bentley reserve in san francisco for the 30th anniversary dinner of the omega boys club. the group started three decades ago at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic. it has since helped hundreds of young men and women graduate from college and stay away from drugs and violence. a los angeles jury ruled in favor of johnson and johnson in a case involving baby powder. a woman claimed she developed cancer after being exposed to

asbestos in johnson and johnson's baby powder. the verdict is the first of thousands of cases causing it can they say asbestos or cause cancer. never do this if you find yourself in this situation. >> a man led police on a 20-mile chase through houston gave officers a little dance before being taken into custody. we have video of it. he was supposed to be lying down on the ground but, as you can see, he was doing -- i'm not even really sure what that is exactly. >> look at the officers looking at each other. does one of them have their gun drawn? >> it's hard to tell. at this point you shouldn't be doing something for the formation video. police were concerned he might try to run into traffic so they unleashed a dog before they arrested him. investigators have not said if he was under the influence.

road with chp and fire on scene. back past the 280/680 also northbound 87 flipped over on its roof and apparently the person inside is responsive but you have a couple of lanes blocked on highway 87. avoid this as well. you can take highway 85. beware. 101 into the san francisco area and highway 1, the coast, up and over 17 into los gatos. there you go, guys. it's 5:32 now and happening today the move to send a man called a violent psychopath back to hawaii. >> abc 7's matt keller was the first reporter to speak with him in jail.

matt? >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. people were terrified here in the bay area that this convicted killer landed here in san jose and was on the loose. but when i talked to him in jail he said he was never going to harm anyone. >> i couldn't believe i actually made it. it was surreal. >> reporter: the safety glass between me and 59-year-old randall saito. inside the san joaquin county jail, he escaped from the psychiatric hospital on sunday. he was committed there in 1981 after being acquitted by reason of insanity for the murder of a woman. in 1993 a court denied saito's request for conditional release saying he continued to suffer from sexual sadism and neck row feel yeah, something he says he made up to avoid prison. saito says he had $6,000 and fake driver's licenses. he chartered a plane

it was the cheapest ticket into california. >> how did you get the ids? >> i can't say, i'm sorry. >> reporter: from the hospital staff, someone from the outside? >> i can't tell you that, who it was. >> reporter: saito stayed one night in san jose and three nights in stockton before he was arrested while trying to take a taxi to reno. he said his purpose was to prove to the hospital administrators he was not a threat to others and deserved to be released after 37 years of exemplary behavior. in a felony for his escape. the hearing is scheduled to start at 1:30. matt keller, abc 7 news. matt, thank you. caltrans is keeping a watch in the santa cruz mountain that is are susceptible to mud slides after rains. >> yesterday crews were along highway 17 during the storm clearing debris and mud from the drains to prevent flooding. they moved from location to location during the downpour. all the rain made for some

treacherous conditions. >> officials discovered more storm related erosion on a hill in santa rosa's fountaingrove neighborhood. it was badly burned in the wildfires last month. a plastic storm drain that once was there melted away in the inferno. overall there weren't any major problems as a result of yesterday's storm. and the storm has cleared just in time for what's expected to be the busiest travel day of the year at sfo. a live picture from the airport, yes, you can see wet tarmacs out there. nearly 400 flights had to be delayed. 33 had to be canceled. aaa predicts more than 50 million americans will be traveling for thanksgiving. new allegations of sexual misconduct making headlines. al franken in the cross hairs. his accuser leeann tweeden shared this photo showing franken groping her as she slept on the flight home from a uso tour in 2006 while he was still in entertain many. tweeden says while rehearsing

them and the first is one of his former assistants who worked for the actor from 2014 to this year and accuses him of, quote, inappropriate behavior. the second is an actor who claims tambor made unwanted sexual advances, and now according to deadline writers on the hit show have contemplated moving forward with the next season without him. tambor, though, denying those allegations this morning. back to you. >> jessica, thank you. this morning nine dogs are all accounted for after a bizarre accident involving a dog walker's pickup truck. three of the dogs ran away after this crash but were later located. the pickup was parked and rolled down a hill and into a house at 26th avenue and santiago street yesterday afternoon. >> double parked and then just started free falling like i guess the parking brake wasn't on or anything. >> the pickup's driver and a child riding in that truck were hurt. they are expected to be okay. police are trying to figure out

exactly what went wrong. on monday closing arguments will begin in the murder trial for the man accused of killing kate steinle. a judge ruled jurors will be allowed to consider a first-degree murder verdict as well as second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter. jose ines garcia zarate is facing second-degree murder charges in the death of steinle. the defense calls her death a freak accident. pg&e plans to chop down as many as 25,000 fire damaged trees to protect power lines in 13 northern and central california counties. according to "the press democrat" they are assessing the condition of trees following last month's wildfires. pg&e officials say the work to cut down or trim trees should be completed by the end of the year. pg&e has been blamed in several lawsuits that allege poorly maintained fire lines sparked the wildfires. pg&e stated that a private power line may have started one of the fires. the cause remains under investigation by the state. a pop-up store in napa that

provides free clothing and household items to fire victims is closing next week. make more of what's yours. welcome back. from our live desk i've been tracking the story making national headlines. there are at least 20 people hurt after a huge fire at a senior living committee in pennsylvania. flames tore through the entire thing. the center is in westchester which is about 35 miles west of philadelphia if you're familiar with the area and the fire spread in no time to several different billings last night. it forced those residents to evacuate in the middle of the cold night about 40 degrees there.

some of them in wheelchairs. but i also want to show you these new images, a little bit newer from this morning as the daylight came up and i think this tells the story. you can see how much damage there is. still a little lit of hot spots there that firefighters are monitoring. still waiting on the condition of those 20 people hurt. we don't know the extent of their injuries but i'll continue to keep my eye on the story for you. reggie, back to you. >> california is finally out with new rules about recreational marijuana that businesses will have to follow. california will begin issuing licenses january 1st for what's expected to be a multibillion dollar industry. the rules call for testing from seed to sale. cannabis stores cannot be within 600 feet of schools, shops must close by 10:00 p.m. and have 24-hour video surveillance. there will be limits how much can go into edible product.

those will not be the only regulations they have to follow. local cities are forming their own rules. happening today muni will begin rolling out its new trains. muni says the new trains will be more comfortable and rider friendly. benches will run along the length of the car to provide wider aisles, new digital signs and the trains are quieter. the car being dedicated today is the first of more than 200 new ones. >> your phone company can now legally block robo calls before they ring on your phone. phone companies have always said they would like to stop the calls but they can't because of laws and regulations. the federal communications commission ended by saying blocking suspected calls is legal. 7 on your side's michael finney says unwanted calls are a major complaint he always gets. consumers are believed to have received more than 2 billion every month. the weather should be fine for you to join michael finney in san francisco today. he's going to be answering your consumer questions and showing you how to check to see if you

have unclaimed cash that could really come in handy over the holidays today from 4:00 to 7:00 at ghirardelli square. tesla is out to electrify the trucking world. the electric carmaker unveiled the tesla semi. it can go 0-60 in five seconds unloaded, twice as fast as a standard diesel truck. 500 miles at maximum weight on a single charge. eloss musk also unveiled this new shiny roadster. he says this can go 0-60 in 1.9 second. there's a top speed of more than 250 miles per hour. you'll have to wait, though, to get your hands on it until at least 2020. no word yet on the price. >> i have a feeling it's going to be out of my budget. a new delivery truck hit the streets in san jose and will make getting aid to families in need easier. >> sacred heart unveiled its brand-new truck. it took a year and a half to

and into wednesday through thursday. thanksgiving morning. look at those temperatures. they're going to be warm. take a look at your rainfall amounts coming up. first, things are getting worse in the south bay, sue. a couple problems san jose, so if you're heading north expect delays. this is 101. those headlights heading past they're fine there but prior to that there's a big problem with an accident blocking lanes northbound 101 right near oakland road. several lanes are blocked there and traffic is stacked up from the capital expressway. then right across the way on highway 87 northbound an overturned vehicle on its roof facing the wrong way in lanes. they issued a sig alert for this particular accident. take 85 or perhaps 280 to avoid your ride out of the blossom valley area in san jose. northbound drivers beware. we'll come back with details and an update in a couple of
