bunches of oats. have you tried it yet? >> announcer: good morning bay area. let's get up and get going. this is "abc 7 mornings." it's saturday, november 18th. thanks so much for being with us. i'm chris nguyen. meteorologist lisa argen is tracking live doppler 7. >> good morning, chris. we're talking about numbers in the 30 highways and patchy frost. here's live doppler 7, it is clear. numbers look like this, anyone from 41 in clover dale, 34 in santa rosa, 40 in mountain view, and oakland, as well as livermore, 39 half moon bay. certainly a cold start with temperatures ranging from the 30s and 40s through 7:00. then we'll look for numbers in

the 30s. afternoon highs will be pleasant for the season, right around 60 degrees at 4:00. that sun setting before 5:00. we're looking at a little bit of rain coming this week with the forecast that's trending drier. i'll explain in a few minutes, chris. >> lisa, thank you. traffic along highway 101 in san francisco is running smoothly this morning. this wasn't the case on one of the busiest travel days of the year. a tragic crash yesterday afternoon blocked driver at the height of rush hour on the southbound side of the freeway near cesar chavez. the response and cleanup took more than four hours as drivers were funneled from just two lanes. abc 7 news reporter lonni rivera has more. >> reporter: from sky 7, traffic barely moved for hours during rush hour along highway 101. the backup began at 4:00 in the afternoon when a dump truck southbound near cesar chavez flipped on its side, striking a muny bus.

>> the collision involved the to a for right lanes. >> reporter: the driver of the truck died on scene despite the frantic attempt by first responders to save him. at least five passengers on the muny bus suffered non-life-threatening injuries. drivers heading home or out of town spent up to two hours in traffic. the gridlock backed up all the way to san francisco and into several east bay cities. >> use 280, possibly to the airport, and expect that also even after the lanes are all open, there's going to be some residual delays. >> reporter: even drivers who left early made it to sfo late. >> it was bumper to bumper pretty much from 580 in castro valley all the way through 'til we got off on the exit here on the 101. >> reporter: the freeway was packed with vehicles. chp investigators talk to some of the drivers who saw the crash. they're hoping they can help with the investigation.

lonni rivera, abc 7 news. in oakland a man and woman are in the hospital recovering from a vicious dog attack. nicole kennedy suffered terrible wounds to her head and in case and a broken leg after two pitbulls attacked her. the dogs also mauled a man who ran to help her. witnesses say the dogs escaped from a neighbor's yard and killed kennedy's shar-pei mix before attacking her. animal control has confiscated those dogs. the chp in santa rosa is scouring streets and parking lots to find a pickup truck that was stolen from a north bay fire victim. they posted these pictures of the blue 2003 ford f-150 that belongs to a man whose home burned down in santa rosa last month. investigators say it was taken from a hotel in windsor where the man is staying and this is the last thing he needs in his life. the truck has a california license plate. the busy holiday shopping season is upon us.

this is a make or break time of year for small businesses, but shoplifters are biting into profits. at abc 7 news reporter katie marzullo explains, business owners aren't going to take it anymore. >> a good 10% of loss every year. >> reporter: she says it's an understatement. she says shoplifting is on the rise. lately she's been encountering professional thieves. >> a lot of them befriend you, are very sweet to you, and you think they wouldn't do that to a small business owner. >> reporter: she's told her employees never to confront a shoplifter. she's worried for their safety. the owner of redemption has taken a different approach. >> i've walked the street a couple of times, i've confronted people a couple of times. they've sa i have said, look, we have you on camera, you can give us back the item now, don't come in again. >> reporter: he says they've had thousands of items stolen.

not only has he gone after people in person, he posts photos of shoplifters on social media. he hopes it sends a message. >> we don't want to be seen as an easy target. >> reporter: owners say people can help by supporting small businesses. and don't forget, the saturday after thanksgiving is small business saturday. in campbell, katie marzullo, abc 7 news. the trump administration has threatened to close the palestinian liberation organization office in washington, d.c. in 90 days until they try to negotiate a peace deal with israel. an obscure law says the office can be closed if the palestinians try to get the international criminal court to prosecute israelis for crimes against palestinians. people in puerto rico still need baseball supplies, nearly two months after hurricane maria hit. this weekend, you can help in san jose. >> the supplies and the relief has been slow going. and they're still recovering. >> abc 7 news visited fire station 6 in willow glen.

>> to me, it was easy. it's the least we can do. >> reporter: she joined the effort right away. now hundreds are participating. they're new and gently used items. organizers want this to look nice, like a retail experience. they're asking people to donate tables and shopping bags. neighborhoods all over santa rosa will have giveaways. junior college, montgomery village, and more. the women realize that people are living in temporary housing or hotels without much storage. >> something to make you feel like you have a home, you know, even art. we have people that have donated art. >> reporter: the plan is to do this again once homes are rebuilt. the event is from 9:00 to 2:00 and will be based on an honor system, that those taking items are actually fire survivors. in santa rosa, katie utehs, abc 7 news. >> to find out what streets are taking part in the sale, head to abc7news.com. happening today, hundreds of volunteers in san jose will sort and pack boxes ahead of sacred

new details in a sexting scandal that dates back to 2014. the brentwood unified school district and its attorney could face court sanctions. abc 7 news first reported on this case three years ago. an adams middle schoolboy blackmailed a girl into sexual acts. the victim's family reached a $2 million settlement. our media partner "the east bay times" has obtained court documents which claim school district employees deleted e-mails and the district's lawyer failed to turn over crucial evidence. the victim is asking for more than $500,000 in sanctions against the school district's

fire. in sonoma county, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. with thanksgiving week approaching, fire victims in napa are taking stock of what they've been through and where they're headed as they navigate a difficult time. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley caught up with one family that lost several homes and their business. >> on a level of what i've been through, i'm somewhat numb to holidays. >> reporter: dan walked me through his sprawling property, what remains of his homes, office, engraving shop, and chapel that are all gone. ten, 20 acres of green cemetery plots untouched by fire at bubbling well memorial park. 15,000 pets are buried here. he feels lucky the records are saved. drone view 7 captured the devastation at this family compound in napa, a before and after picture say it all.

he, his wife and 97-year-old mother were airlifted out on a chopper that couldn't take his dog. drake survived the inferno inside this truck. there are other complications. 100 urns with pet ashes in them were in essence re-cremated and lost. it's hard to notify the pet owners. once fema clears the property, they hope to bring in a temporary trailer and reopen for business. >> i've kind of put the emotional feelings aside, just to try to focus and stay moving forward. >> our survival, our life as a business, we can live or die because of this catastrophe. my sole purpose right now to see that doesn't happen. >> reporter: he says he's stuffing down his fears and not facing his own depression over the losses, choosing instead to embrace his family and his community. >> we've just got to carry on. each day gets better. we're coming together for thanksgiving. >> reporter: in napa, leslie

brinkley, abc 7 news. today is a big day for drivers who use a popular road in one east bay city. crews will be taking down the road closed signs on morgan territory road in clayton at 5:00 tonight. the two-lane road suffered considerable damage from the storms last winter and has been closed for months. in fact for a time the road was slipping up to a foot a day. repair work began in july. oakland city leaders are making sweeping changes as we approach one year since the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire. abc 7 news was in oakland as the mayor and other city leaders announced reforms to prevent the same type of tragedy from happening again. the city is adding more fire and building inspectors, adding outside help to clear inspection backlogs and bringing the fire and building inspection database onto a single system. the effort includes multilingual outreach to tenants. >> we've put together notices that are also getting word to the tenants because a lot of this is really about

communication, not just to the owner. making sure the residents in these buildings and facilities are aware of actions pending and of resources that they have. >> the oakland warehouse association has voiced some concerns about seeing more evictions as a result of the reforms. san francisco's skyline now shines brightly at night, thanks to a familiar holiday sight. fireworks celebrated the lighting of the embarcadero center. 17,000 bulbs now outline the complex's four towers. this is the 31st year for the embarcadero center's light display. christie yamaguchi helped open downtown ice last night, located in the circle of palms plaza. the rink will remain open through mid-january. abc 7 news was in union square for the 31st year of pets capturing the hearts of shoppers in the windows of macy's. over the decades people have adopted 9,000 pets that appeared

at macy's. shoppers donated $100,000 to the spca last year. happening today, one of san francisco's oldest charities is feeding the homeless this thanksgiving. st. anthony's needs your help, they're accepting donations of food and lightly worn clothes. you can donate through thanksgiving day. in the south bay, second harvest food bank is collecting turkeys for families this thinking. they still need to reach their goal of 24,000 turkeys. they must be donated by monday. monetary donations also help. second harvest has three locations where you can drop off goods. two centers are in san jose, one in san carlos. check the hours for each of the centers before going. good saturday morning to you. here's live doppler 7. nice and clear out there. but as a result, temperatures are really cold. we're talking 30s and 40s.

we are looking at temperatures to stay cold through the 7:00, 8:00 hour. then by noontime we're in the 50s, sunny skies with temperatures topping out near 60 degrees. upper 50s on the coast. rain chances are scaling back for the week ahead. in fact we're looking much milder in terms of temperatures. i'll have your full accuweather forecast in a few minutes, chris. >> lisa, thank you. president trump has made a surprise announcement to suspend his decision on importing big game trophies. the president tweeted that he has put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as he can review all conservation facts. he said an update would come soon. the move comes as celebrities, politicians, and even some trump supporters had criticized the administration's decision to allow people to import elephant trophies into the united states. here is abc news reporter david packer. >> reporter: president trump changing course, holding off on a decision to lift a ban that would have allowed big game

zinke, who hunts. dave packer, abc news, new york. the president is weighing in about sexual misconduct, blasting senator al franken after a woman accused him of forcibly kissing her while he was senator. the president has remained silent on senate candidate roy moore. abc news' cecilia vega has more. >> reporter: it didn't take the president long to weigh in on a photo of al franken as he appeared to sexually assault a woman. "and to think just last week he was lecturing anyone who would listen about sexual harassment and respect for women." that searing rebuke came just hours after the accusations against the minnesota democrat became public. but as for the more than week-old allegations accusing alabama republican senate candidate roy moore of sexual

misconduct -- should roy moore assign, mr. president? do you believe his accusers? the president ignored our questions repeatedly. with those nonanswers, and that attack on franken, the allegations of sexual misconduct against president trump himself are back in the spotlight. from that "access hollywood" tape. >> i'm automatically attracted to beautiful -- i just start kissing them, it's like a magnet. when you're a star, they let you do it, you can do anything. grab them by the [ bleep ]. >> reporter: to the more than two dozen women who came forward during the campaign, alleging everything from sexual assault to harassment and inappropriate behavior. >> all of these liars will be sued after the election is over. >> reporter: we put the question to the white house. >> if it's fair to investigate al franken and the allegation made by his accuser, is it also fair to investigate this

president and the allegations of sexual misconduct made against him by more than a dozen women? >> look, i think that this was covered pretty extensively during the campaign. we addressed it then. the american people i think spoke very loud and clear when they elected this president. >> but how is this different? >> i think in one case, specifically senator franken has admitted wrongdoing and the president hasn't. that's a very clear distinction. >> reporter: no sign of franken in the wake of radio host leeann tweeden's bombshell claims about their work together on a uso tour on 2006. in addition to that photo, she says he kissed her forcefully and against her will. >> i was just disgusted, i felt like, you know, he betrayed my trust. >> reporter: tweeden revealed she's now received a letter of apology. >> dear leeann, i want to apologize to you personally, i am so sorry, sincerely, al franken. >> reporter: cecilia vega, abc news, the white house.

alabama's governor says she will vote for roy moore for senate despite the sexual allegations against him, as his wife and a group of women aggressively defended him outside alabama's state capital. moore's supporters accused the media and washington establishment for trying to block trump's agenda. >> even after all the attacks against me, against my family, against the foundation, and now against my husband, he will not step down. >> moore faces accusations of sexual misconduct toward teenaged girls when he was in his 30s. abc 7 news spoke with bay area congresswoman jackie speier. she talked about the believability of roy moore's accusers. >> women don't come forward and lie, because they know what the

downside risk is to come forward to begin with. and even coming forward is a painful experience, because you're reliving it. >> speier, who revealed she was sexually harassed in congress, is pushing anti-sexual-harassment legislation in the house. the sounds and flavors weren't lost in this group for guide tours for the blind, who celebrated the group's 75th anniversary. they strolled through chinatown, stopping to soak up some of the history. >> chinatown was one of the top places that they wanted to come and tour. so one of the things that really i think makes my heart sing is watching how well our dogs work and how well our teams work together in what can be a chaotic environment.

and a half will be week and stay to the north. numbers eight to 13 degrees colder, due to the lower dew points, clear sky and lack of wind and lack of insulation without any cloud cover. closer look outside, you notice how pretty it looks with the buildings lit up there. 39 half moon bay, 40 in mountain view as well as oakland. 42 san jose. as we take a look at this festive picture, the numbers on this panel reflect the north bay cities which are much colder. in fact about 12 degrees colder in santa rosa as it is closer to the water. 34 for you, 37 napa, novato. 36 by the delta with low 40s. concord, livermore checking in at 40 degrees. we'll look for a beautiful afternoon today. some of that patchy frost though this morning will linger into the 7:00, 8:00 hour. otherwise we do have a dry weekend in store, even though there will be more clouds tomorrow. looks like light rain could arrive in the north bay early on monday, but at this point it is

looking really kind of like a far north bay event. i'll show you that in just a moment. a warmer weather pattern arrives into thanksgiving. that will reflect in our overnight lows and the afternoon highs. tomorrow morning once again we'll be in the 30s around santa rosa. the average low temperature is 40 degrees. so we're well below that now. we will be tomorrow. and then into monday, temperatures modify. look at this, waking up in the 50s. we'll have a good deal of sunshine that will put us up into the 70s by the afternoon. your hour by hour forecast throughout the day today, notice nothing on the screen here. so that's a sunny day for your saturday. tomorrow, 11:00, we're dry. but we have high clouds, not only moving across the central bay but throughout the day, we'll have a good deal of the cloud cover. and then as i stop it right here, 5:00 offshore, you'll notice that we have a slug of moisture. and this looks like it wants to push up to the north. so we'll see. it looks like it may not verify

in terms of bringing anyone any rain at all, except the north bay. so at this point, as we go to 9:00 monday night, rainfall looks scant from novato to napa, really nothing into san francisco and points south, only 5/100ths in calistoga. rainfall this time of year in and around where it should be, 100%, that's good news. fremont, 63. look for low 60s in palo alto, san mateo. upper 50s along the shoreline. if you're headed down to stanford down on the farm, 57 degrees, 5:00, with low 50s by 8:00. the accuweather seven-day forecast featuring a lot of sunshine today, less so tomorrow. but the high clouds will insulate us a bit in the days ahead, particularly sunday night when we may see some rain, a 1 on our storm impact scale for the north bay at this point. then looking at temperatures really modifying. tuesday, wednesday, thursday, highs in the low 70s inland near
